    ---

“No thanks, let's try to get around it,” Tony said, adding that he'd be ready to add another doll to his tab, like usual.

She nodded, but before they could really move, the Cleffa moved off down the path, skipping in a diagonal from one rock to another. It went ahead about twenty feet, just where the light was starting to dim and blend into the blackness, and turned back to them, looking like it wanted them to follow. Ivy shrugged, silently deciding they might as well.

The small, pink Pokémon bobbed in and out of their sight, and they followed it down several twists and turns in the tunnels. Eventually they came to a wide open room with a sloping floor, making a sort of bowl in the floor. Columns of rock connected floor to ceiling, decorating the space with pillars. There was a faint light in the ceiling too, and when she looked up, she could see sky. They must've traveled down in elevation a bit for the room to be so big. Still, the tiny spot brightened up the room quite a bit. She turned her flashlight off so they could let their eyes adjust better, and immediately she could feel a difference.

Ivy slid carefully down the slope of the bowl and into the cave deeper, and she heard Tony do the same behind her. A little dust kicked up, and she felt a small draft to offset the clammy feeling of the room. She was about to ask Tony where he wanted to go from here, but a noise jerked her head back around.

A beam of dark energy flashed out, and a rock to her right exploded. A Night Slash. She ducked down and covered her head as the blast knocked some smaller rocks loose from the ceiling. When the dust settled and the stones were done falling, she stood up carefully, peering through the dusty room for the source. A sharpening sound drew her eyes back to the left, across the bowl. She caught sparks coming off of a large boulder as a form came into view.

It was a red, black, and silver bipedal Pokémon with steel ribbings in its center and a protective helmet with a gold-plated axe on top. It dragged one of its gloved hands down the rock ominously, shifting its feet like it was ready to spring. She recognized it as a Bisharp, a Pokémon Chainy had been really excited to catch once it had been discovered. It was cool, but she knew it was dangerous. They were known to be carnivorous, and they usually hunted in packs. It's eyes were barely visible under its helmet, but she knew it was looking at her closely. She tried not to move.

“Okay, Tony, this one's probably a bit more your skill level. They can be dangerous though, so if you decide to fight, be careful.”

We made our way around the tiny pink wad, and continued down the ever-darkening cavern. It was incredibly humid in the cave, and every drop of sweat I emitted stuck to me, sitting atop my skin. I had come prepared to weather the elements, and it seems that I was prepared to endure everything but uncomfortable heat. The temperature couldn’t have been very high, but the amount of moisture in the air was making it miserable. The path we were taking was taking turns here and there now and I couldn’t tell, but we seemed to be going slightly downhill. In addition to the already annoying condition of the cave, it was also pitch black anywhere there wasn’t a faint beam of light from Ivy’s flashlight. I knew that Juan, my Breloom, was capable of learning Flash, but I had neglected to teach it to him. We didn’t go on a lot of nighttime hunts, so I didn’t think I would ever use it. Now I was regretting it.

After several minutes of following the path, we came around a turn that revealed a faint light at the end. We walked toward it until we reached a large, open room with a hole at the top that we could see blue sky through. The room was shaped somewhat like a bowl, and the floor sloped all the way around it, all the way to the floor. Huge rocks were piled up from floor to ceiling. The huge rock structures around the cave almost seemed man made, and I wondered how big a role people played in making the paths in the national park. Upon further inspection, it seemed that the giant columns were hand crafted by nature, with clear signs of erosion that I noticed when we passed by one. The room was huge, and I figured that it was the perfect place for a pokemon, or several pokemon to be hiding. The hole near the top of the cave provided more than enough light in the large room, and I saw Ivy click her flashlight off. The edges and walls of the room were still murky and mostly hidden by darkness, but the vast majority of the giant chamber was bright enough to see.

I was about to ask Ivy if she had been in this huge space before, but when I looked over at her she was sliding down the slope toward the center of the room. She maintained her balance as she rode an invisible snowboard down the floor, and hopped nimbly onto the flat ground when she reached the bottom. She seemed to know what she was doing, but I was incredibly uneasy. She and I would soon be in the middle of a huge room, and we couldn’t quite see the entire thing. If I learned anything from my numerous hunting trips, it was to be sure and not get caught out in the open. You instantly become a giant target for stealthy targets who creep in the shadows. I looked around, and over both shoulders before I followed her down. Everything looked quiet and still in the cave, so I figured we were just taking the short way through the middle and onto the next tunnel. I imitated her sliding technique, though with less gracefulness, and eventually tumbled onto the ground. I stood up and wiped the dust off of myself, and then checked to make sure nothing was broken in my bag.

As I zipped my bag back up, I heard Ivy begin to speak. She had just turned around and opened her mouth when suddenly one of the small boulders next to her exploded with a bolt of blackish energy coming off of it with the dust. I couldn’t quite see what had caused it, but it was clearly a dark type attack. Some kind of crafty pokemon, with bad intentions, was on top of us. As I looked around the room, my eyes still not fully adjusted to the natural light flooding in from above, I saw Ivy duck down and cover her head. Small shards of the busted rock were still falling, and the area around us was full of dust. Once it settled, she stood back up and joined me in our search for whatever had caused the damage. Out of nowhere, a metallic, raking noise came from behind us. It was comparable to nails scraping on a chalkboard, but it had much more intensity. Both of us turned around to see something raking its claws up and down on a boulder, using it as a whet stone. Orange sparks were flashing up from the rock, lowering our visibility even more.

As we looked at it longer, the pokemon’s silhouette slowly began to form. It was standing on two feet, and was somewhat tall, at least for a pokemon. Its head was round, and it had smooth metallic skin everywhere else. Its claw sharpening slowed down a bit, and the sparks ceased, allowing us to see just what we were dealing with. The pokemon was black, red, and silver, with a huge axe coming from its helmet-like face. Two eyes were glaring at us from underneath the helmet, and I could see it smirking at us. It looked like it was ready to pounce, as its feet were moving back and forth in anticipation.

It was a Bisharp. These pokemon were not only territorial, but they were also feared predators. In the wild, they are revered as great hunters, and are at the top of their food chain in most places that they’re found. Judging by what the pokemon was doing, it was getting ready to catch its next meal. It worried me that there was only one Bisharp in front of us. I knew that they normally hunted and lived in groups, so there was sure to be more lurking on the outskirts of the room. This particular specimen had claw marks and dings in its natural armor, showing that it had been a part of several scuffles and fights with other Bisharp.

“Okay, Tony, this one's probably a bit more your skill level. They can be dangerous though, so if you decide to fight, be careful,” said Ivy, sounding a bit unnerved. I could understand why she might be on edge though; she had almost been sliced in two by Bisharp’s Night Slash. We had seen what it could do to solid rock; human flesh would not slow its blade-like hands down one bit.

I judged my opponent some more. Even if I wasn’t going to catch the beast, it would still have to be fought off. The pokemon was hunting us. Who knew how long it was following us down the cave? It had spotted its next meal, and it wouldn’t rest until it was caught and killed. I understood how the pokemon operated, being a hunter myself. We both had honed primal instincts, and I figured that Bisharp would be quite a formidable opponent.

“Alright,” I said, staring intently at the battle-hardened pokemon “let’s do this.”

I pondered the three pokemon I had brought along with me and smiled. Bisharp was a Dark and Steel type pokemon. Houndoom had a type advantage over it with its fire attacks, and Breloom and Gallade had a huge type advantage with their fighting moves. I knew that having advantageous types was helpful, but I would have to rely on my strategic skills if I wanted to win this battle.

“Breloom, why don’t you come out,” I said, tossing Breloom’s pokeball onto the cavern floor. My green and white mushroom on legs sprung onto the floor, rearing to go. Out of all my pokemon, none of them had as much fighting spirit as Breloom. Being a Fighting type it was natural for it to constantly want to battle, but even among my other fighters it showed supreme bravery. It was “wagging” its club-like tail back and forth, knocking a few rocks that were sticking up behind him onto the floor. Sometimes he didn’t quite know his own strength. You wouldn’t think that Breloom was that great at fighting just by looking at it. It seemed to have no arms at all, despite specializing in fighting moves. Its strategy, however, was to get in as close as possible with light footwork, and use its extendable arms to deal massive damage to the foe. Another one of my favorite tactics for catching pokemon was to put them into a deep sleep with Spore. I’m sure I would try that out against the Bisharp.

The two pokemon looked each other over for a long time. Bisharp was, at first, startled that I had chosen to bring out my own pokemon, and Breloom was staring him down with a smirk, stamping its large foot on the ground. Though Bisharp was fast, I knew that Breloom could handle it. One of Breloom’s strong suits was being able to hit his opponent, no matter where they may be.

I now thought of what I should be expecting from the Bisharp as far as moves. Though Bisharp had a glaring weakness to fighting, Breloom also had a major disadvantage to flying type moves. Since it specialized in blade-like attacks, I assumed the pokemon knew how to execute Aerial Ace, which could prove to be deadly to Breloom if it managed to hit.

I assessed the situation, and I decided that I didn’t want to try and rush in, guns blazing. I was going to use a more gradual style of battling instead of my normal strategy, which was to hit hard and fast. Although Breloom was built primarily for hand to hand combat, I knew that he could also be a terror in the “hax” department. It could inflict almost any status ailment on an opponent, and could modify stats as well. In a competitive battle, Bisharp would never stand a chance against a Breloom, but I knew that this wasn’t a normal battle setting. There were no rules here, and Bisharp would use any tactics, including underhanded ones, to win.

I was hoping that not using straight up fighting tactics, and instead playing more defensively would throw Bisharp off-guard a bit. I examined the surroundings to see what I might be able to pull off. There were a few small to medium sized boulders littering the flat area around us, and other than that it was fairly wide open. Breloom and Bisharp were facing off in a mostly cleared off area with rocks around the outside, resembling a wrestling or boxing ring. There wasn’t too much to work with unfortunately, so I would have to be careful about how I did things here. I didn’t want to have Breloom faint half way through the park run, so winning this battle was important.

To slowly wear down Bisharp, there were two key things that needed to happen. One; I needed a way to wear his health down, and two; I needed a way to keep my health up. Luckily, Breloom had a move designed to do just that: Leech Seed. Tiny seeds would cover the opponent, slowly transferring their energy to my Breloom. The only downside was that Leech Seeds didn’t travel that quickly through the air, and weren’t very accurate. Given the wide open space and swiftness of my opponent, I figured that the attack wouldn’t be that successful. I wondered what else I could do when I remembered the rocks and boulders scattered around. I had taken the time to teach Breloom several rock based attacks (mostly to defend against Flying types), and now would be a perfect time to make full use of them. An idea began to slowly form in my head, and I started shouting orders at Breloom before everything had fallen into place.

“Breloom, start out by smashing up some of the boulders around here. Use Strength on them!” I shouted across the cave. Ivy and I had relocated ourselves a bit further away from the predatorial Bisharp.

Breloom nodded and quickly rushed over to the nearest boulder. His short arms extended, and he took a firm grasp of the giant rock. He tugged upwards on it for a bit, and with one last jerk it came out of the ground. Breloom turned around to face me now, looking funny as it held the giant rock in front of it.

“Okay, now slam it onto the ground with full force,” I said, backing up a few paces incase rock fragments shot our way.

Breloom’s grin disappeared and was replaced by a look of pure determination. He lifted the boulder a bit further into the air, hopped up a little bit, and then plummeted back toward the earth, slamming the rock onto the cavern floor with every bit of his strength. We heard an echoing crash resonate throughout the cave, and dust filled the air instantly, causing me to cough. When I looked up again, the cave’s floor was covered in fist-sized rock pieces, just as I had planned.

“Great job, Breloom. Now for phase two. Get a few Leech Seeds ready and scatter them onto those rocks!”

This command was a bit unorthodox, and Breloom looked up at me, somewhat puzzled. He quickly turned back toward the carpet of stone though. Breloom reached up into his mushroom-like head, which hung just like an umbrella, and pulled out a handful of little, brown seeds. I looked at the seeds closely, and could see that they were moving and wriggling in my pokemon’s hand. I remembered the first time we had tried to execute Leech Seed after Juan had evolved from Shroomish to Breloom. Before, he had used the hole on top of his head to fire the seeds rapidly at his opponent, but when he evolved he lost the hole. The seeds were still there, but they had to be harvested a different way. It took us awhile, but we finally managed to figure the attack out.

“Kay, now throw them onto the rocks!” I shouted, watching Breloom perform the task. The seeds were flung from his hand and they quickly landed on the stones covering the ground. I watched them instantly latch onto the individual stones, and leaves began popping out occasionally.

“Great, this should work well. Now launch those stones at Bisharp! When they hit, they should inflict a little damage while also transferring the seeds to it! Use Stone Edge!” I shouted. Breloom obeyed, and quickly began to focus his energy. One of his hands was raised in a fist, and it started to glow a bit. Once he was done storing energy, he slammed his fist onto the ground, sending all the seed-covered stones into the air. Almost simultaneously, he turned around and used his massive tail to hit the rocks midair, sending them all toward Bisharp. Breloom let out a grunt with this final tail slap, reminding me of a tennis player.

I watched in suspense as the now vine and grass covered rocks flew through the air at Bisharp. I knew the Rock type attack wouldn’t be that powerful, but the slow and gradual draining of its health would be the key to winning the battle.

Tony stared long and hard at the Bisharp, probably deciding whether he wanted to fight or not. While the Steel type was certainly a valuable prize, it was also dangerous. The small scratches and other marks on its plates suggested it had done its fair share of fighting in the past.

“Alright,” he finally said. “Let's do this.”

The Trainer evaluated the entire scene carefully, and Ivy approved. It was important to think about surroundings and what you could use to your advantage in nature. Tony also glanced down at his belt for a bit, thinking of what Pokémon to use. She couldn't remember what partners he had brought from the roster.

After a few minutes he said, “Breloom, why don't you come out.” Then, he tossed a red and white Pokéball onto the cave floor, and in a flash of light, a middle-height, bipedal mushroom Pokémon appeared. It was green and cream-colored with red accents on its claws and head. It had a long club-like tail with spore like bulbs on the end that it was waving back and forth, eager to battle. Ivy knew Breloom could be very handy in a battle with their various status-inflicting moves and hard hits.

Ivy thought it a good match up. They were probably around equal in speed and strength, and they both were used to battling. The Bisharp seemed surprised that Tony was not going to be its opponent, but it remained calm and widened its stance a little as it took in its new foe.

“Breloom, start out by smashing up some of the boulders around here. Use Strength on them!” the Trainer shouted, and the Grass type nodded and complied quickly, following Tony's instructions to pick up a large boulder and slam it against the ground, shattering it into more manageable pieces. He then was instructed to use leech seed on the pieces, and Ivy figured out what they were doing.

Since the cave was a little murky and Bisharp was pretty agile, there wasn't a good chance of a regular leech seed hitting its target by itself. Since both were pretty evenly matched, Breloom needed another way to start wearing the Bisharp down without taking too much damage himself. If it hit, the Leech Seed would also heal the Grass type. If he launched the rocks, they could damage Bisharp too.

While Breloom was preparing his attack, Ivy looked closer at the wild Pokémon. It seemed to be analyzing what they were doing closely, but she couldn't tell what if it was worried or not. It just looked calm and prepared for anything. Then, it started stepping side to side, like it was preparing to move. As she looked, she thought she saw a faint white ring around it, and at first she was puzzled at what was going on. With a little help from Haji, their bond let her see with more than just her eyes, and when she looked at the Bisharp again, she saw a ring of pointed swords twirling about him. A fire seemed to sharpen its eyes as it focused. Ivy had seen the Swords Dance move a few times before, but never had she been this worried about it. Bisharp were already aggressive, and extra power to strike with wasn't good.

Ivy backed up from the bowl, nearing the edge of the slope that they had come down and staying away from rock pillars or any boulders that could fall on them and be jostled by attacks. It put her out in the open a little, which she didn't like, but she didn't want to get pelted by debris either. “Ready your screens, Haji, just in case,” she said to the Espeon at her feet, and the purple cat nodded, tensing as he focused, watching the battle start.

“Great, this should work well. Now launch those stones at Bisharp!” Tony called, and Ivy watched as the Breloom punched the ground, causing the stones to fly up into the air. He then proceeded to bat them with his tail, sending them flying across the bowl toward the Bisharp.

The Steel type came out of its trance as the rocks came flying, and it raised its arms up to protect its face. Some of the rocks it managed to knock away, sending them flying into other rocks and pillars. One of them sailed over to where she had been standing before, taking out a basketball-sized chunk of the rock, and she tensed a bit, knowing that could've been her.

It couldn't block all of though, and it staggered back as a few larger stones hit it hard. The green seeds sprinkled on the rocks leeched onto the Steel type on contact, and they suddenly grew stringy green threads that wrapped around Bisharp's appendages. Because of she and Haji's bond, she could feel the energy in them, and she felt a pulsing as they drained a little energy from the Fighting Pokémon.

With a defiant call, the Bisharp tried to brush off the grass stuck to it, but the vines stubbornly stayed in place. The Pokémon glared at the Breloom from across the bowl. Then, it slapped its arms together and swung them sideways, using its entire body to gain momentum. It slammed them into a boulder next to it, and the thing shattered, throwing up tiny bits of rock and a blanket of dust. With another sweep of its arms, a breeze started up in the small cavern, and the dust started to swirl. It picked up in speed, spreading in area until it covered the entire bowl.

Ivy could barely see as she threw up an arm to shield her eyes from the Sandstorm. She flinched a little as a small rock bit her cheek as it flew by. The Bisharp could be faintly seen from random glints of its metal plating shifting, but other than that, she couldn't tell much, even after training with her ninja-like Crobat. She could feel it more than anything, and the shift in energy told her it was planning something. Tony would have to be very careful now, especially if the Sandstorm hurt his Breloom too much.

OOC: Boy please. And I held off as long as I could on the sleep moves, but I had to use one this time lol. I think I was creative with it at least.

Just before Breloom launched the newly formed carpet of rocks at Bisharp, I noticed something odd about our opponent. He was doing what looked like a kind of dance, and a white ring was surrounding him. I looked closer, squinting in the cave’s dim light, and saw that he was completely surrounded by what seemed to be swords or daggers. They twirled around him as he danced, and as he continued, I could tell he was getting stronger. I recognized the move as Swords Dance.

My Breloom also knew the move, but he performed it differently. My pokemon would take a firm and sturdy stance and close his eyes, absorbing energy from all around him. First his claws would begin to glow, and then his feet would follow suit. Once the glowing was over, his feet and hands would look much larger and more dangerous. It was almost like a more intense version of Bulk Up that focused all energy on the Attack stat.

I turned back to Bisharp to see his claws glowing brightly. All of his natural weapons were becoming more and more deadly, and I knew that that could spell a ton of trouble for Breloom. I knew that I still had two pokemon waiting behind Breloom, but if they came in against a Bisharp who had been given time to set up, they were in for a lot of trouble. Finally, his dance ended. He returned to his normal fighting stance just before I commanded Breloom to send the rocks at him.

Breloom smacked the ground heavily, and quickly turned around. His huge, club-like tail hit the mass of stones like a thousand rock hard baseballs. The group of rocks sailed through the air towards Bisharp who crossed his armor-like arms over his head. Most of the rocks deflected off, hitting the walls of the cave, and even knocking giant chunks out of some of the huge stone columns. Bisharp was at his limit though. His arms couldn’t stand to take much more of the seemingly never ending barrage of rocky artillery. His arms gave way, and a heavy stream of jagged, dagger-like stones piled onto him, each one holding a deadly leech seed.

Bisharp was sent flying, and fell hard on the cavern floor. As he was lying on his back, the leech seeds began to take effect. They hopped off of the stones and latched onto Bisharp, happy to find a living host. Their parasitic little teeth were able to drill through the Bisharp’s metal skin and suck plenty of energy out. Each individual seed now shot out small vines that connected to each other like an extremely intricate spider web. Bisharp raked himself all over with his blade-like hands, but it was no use. The seeds wouldn’t be removed now; they were latched on too tight. As Bisharp tried to get to his feet, the true leeching began. His body glowed green as he let out a howl of pain. The energy slowly came out of his body and formed a large ball in the air. As Bisharp stopped glowing, the energy mass floated toward Breloom. Breloom seemed to soak it up, glowing green just as Bisharp had before, only this time it had the opposite effect. My pokemon let out a little sigh, glad to be filled with energy.

Bisharp now stood up, accepting that the seeds were there to stay. His red armor was now almost completely masked by interlocking green vines with tiny leaves protruding occasionally. Without much warning, the Bisharp slapped both of its palms together. It swung its mace-like hands full force at a large rock that was standing next to it, shattering it into a million tiny pieces. It almost seemed as if the pokemon was copying Breloom’s technique. As the rock exploded, the cave instantly filled up with dust and debris. I could barely see Breloom’s silhouette in the cave. Now the Bisharp began to rake up dust from the ground, adding it to the sandy air. Dust and sand began to swirl around the two pokemon, making visibility in the cave almost nonexistent. The bits of sand and rock that were circling through the air would occasionally slice across my skin showing no mercy whatsoever. I quickly reacted and unrolled my long sleeves. I buttoned the cuffs to ensure no more sand could cut my arms. I pulled a cloth out of my bag and rapped it around my neck and the lower half of my face. My hat came down just far enough to shield my forehead. Luckily I always kept a pair of Go-Goggles in my bag for just this kind of situation. I pulled them out of my bag and put them on, and the cave instantly became more visible. I had bought the goggles for use in Hoenn’s desert area, but I had used them several times since then. Though the glasses didn’t make everything one hundred percent clear, I could see the two pokemon much better. I couldn’t quite see my ranger, but I figured she was okay. She was surely used to this kind of thing, and well prepared. I knew that there were areas like Mt. Deckbi that had awful conditions like this almost all the time. The park amazed me in this way. It was so diverse, and had so many different environments, yet it was all confined on an island.

The Sandstorm was a cyclone now. It revolved around the two pokemon, and scattered dust and tiny rocks everywhere else in the cave. I imagined what it must look like from outside. Dust was surely spouting out of the hole in the top of the room. I was thankful that Bisharp’s skin was so metallic. Occasionally light would hit it perfectly and I would catch the glare. I was close enough to Breloom to see him pretty well, but I was relying solely on these glints of light to see the opponent.

Now it was time to start planning my next move. Bisharp now had a huge Attack advantage over Breloom, meaning if it got an attack off, it might be the end. To add to that, Breloom had relatively low defense, meaning a one hit knockout was easily within the realm of possibility. I remembered that Breloom and Bisharp had incredibly similar Speeds. Both were evenly matched in that department. I didn’t want to rely on chance though, so I decided I would ensure that Breloom struck first.

“Breloom, I want you to get in close with Mach Punch!” I shouted through the howling winds. Breloom nodded and began to prep for the lightning fast attack “Before you go, I want you to build up a Spore attack on your head!”

Breloom paused his Mach Punch and started to produce his signature spores. They came from underneath his mushroom cap, like most of his status moves, and fell down in a sort of powder. It reminded me a lot of the time I captured my Breloom as a Shroomish. I was on a hunt in Petalburg Woods, and I hadn’t come up with anything all day. Finally, when it was nearly dark, we spotted the little green mushroom walking around by the base of a tree. I had Houndoom run in close for an attack, but Shroomish blasted him with a Spore attack from out of the top of his head. Houndoom was the only pokemon I had brought along, so I had to stop the hunt and wake it up. The Spore, however, had left a distinct odor in Houndoom’s nose, making it very easy to track down. We finally found it and attacked from afar instead of going in close. Knowing that Bisharp had to attack up close, and probably would anyway due to Swords Dance, I assumed the Spore would be really effectful.

“Great, now use Absorb to get the Spores all over your hand,” I said. I had used the strategy before to much success. A powder covered hand would make the target drowsy and deal a lot of damage at the same time.

Breloom put his claw in the air. It glowed green as little whitish-green orbs came out of it. They floated in the air, mingling with the airborne powder, as it sucked up his spore attack. Once it had eradicated the powder from the air around Breloom, the green orbs gently floated back toward Breloom’s fist. When the light died down, his fist was coated in the greenish yellow dust that had come out of his mushroom-like head. I needed to give him another order quickly so the Spore wouldn’t have any effect on him.

“Great, now dart over and hit him hard with it!” I shouted at Breloom. The green pokemon shot like a bullet through the Sandstorm, his fist glowing and raised. What looked like lightning bolts were coming out of the air and striking his fist. They were silvery-blue, and four were extending behind him as he rushed his opponent. The sandy air didn’t seem to slow him down any, but I could tell he was annoyed by it. He wasn’t Rock, Steel, or Ground type, so the Sandstorm would slowly drain a little health each turn. Luckily, Leech Seed would be stealing a little bit of Bisharp’s health throughout the battle, so the storm wasn’t too much trouble, definitely enough to be worked around.

Bisharp didn’t look prepared for the swift attack. Breloom was on top of him before he even knew it. With his unaffected hand, he grasped the Bisharp around the collar, making sure he couldn’t dodge the attack. I hoped to add a few more dents in Bisharp’s armor. Then he raised his mighty fist above the pokemon. I watched anxiously to see what effect the devastating move might have on Bisharp.

(OOC: Careful with that attack landing stuff.)

    BP#5

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Tony faired fairly well in the storm, coming prepared with a type of goggles Ivy had seen used in the desert. She pulled her hood up, and since the sides extended a few inches beyond her head, it served as a wind breaker. She was fairly used to elements throughout the Park, and she didn't like to carry a ton of equipment with her.

The Trainer called for Breloom to get in close with a Mach Punch next. That was a good idea since Bisharp, though sturdy, were weak to fighting moves. Too many would leave more than just dents and scratches in his armor. The Grass type probably knew not to hit too hard though, especially because of his next direction. “Before you go, I want you to build up a Spore attack!” Tony called.

The Breloom then proceeded to coat his fists with the sleeping powder, intent on hitting the wild Pokémon with it. That was a great idea, since it was easier to make contact with it and the Bisharp might not be able to dodge. Sleep was a dangerous ailment to fall under. If the Bisharp went unconscious, Breloom had an opportunity to set up.

Then Breloom shot off, following the faint glints of Bisharp's steel plates that shined every once in a while. The Grass type blurred as it overcame the Steel type, getting up close as he pulled his spore-covered fist back to strike. The Bisharp couldn't dodge at that range, and the fist slammed into him, sending him flying and skidding across the floor on his back.

He flailed a bit, but slower, so Ivy thought the sleep was overtaking him quickly. Before it did completely, there was a harsh pink light that formed an edge in the air while Bisharp was still moving. It snapped off, slicing through the sandy air at the Breloom. A Psycho Cut.

It flew toward Breloom even as he tried to slide back and out of the way. He stayed mostly ahead of it, but one of the light blades knocked his shoudler as it angled up toward the ceiling. Ivy traced it with her eyes as it sliced through several jutting rocks, sending them crashing to the floor in a random pattern. The fell behind Breloom, cutting off his backward retreat and encasing him in a sort of cage closer to the Bisharp. The Psycho blade then slammed into the far wall and shook even more dirt loose into the cavern.

With looming rocks behind him, Breloom could do nothing but keep confronting the Bisharp. She thought this would be okay though, as the Bisharp seemed to droop as he was trying to get up. He ended being partway propped up on a rock, and one of his arms twitched periodically as the other one was sort of bracing him. Even as she looked, he was sliding a bit to the side. He was probably going to fall over if he didn't wake up.

Then the vines on his limbs curled tighter around him as they glowed for a second, draining life from Bisharp. It then transferred to a spore-like orb and floated back toward Breloom, absorbing into his skin to return health to him.

Things were looking good for Tony. Ivy hoped they stayed that way.

OOC: Yeah, I'm really sorry this was so late. I was too busy at first, but then when I went to write it I just couldn't think of anything to do. After a lot of thinking, this is what I came up with, and it isn't much. I realize that the attack choice is pretty strong, but I tried not to KO it. That would suck. Anyway, I'm just under the MCR with this post, so one more afterwards should do it (considering Bisharp doesn't get ded).

I watched as Breloom took hold of the surprised Bisharp. The Steel type didn't even get to think before Breloom was on top of him. Bisharp watched in horror as Breloom raised his yellow, Spore coated fist in the air and slammed it into his chest. The devastating blow sent the Pokemon rocketing across the cavern and into the far wall. Even through the sandstorm, I could hear the crash, followed by a groan of agony from the battered pokemon. I knew Bisharp was an experienced battler just by looking at his armor-like skin; I hoped we were giving him a run for his money.

As our opponent flailed around on the floor, scrambling and trying to get back to his feet, he made an awful screeching noise. His metallic armor was scratching the stone floor, which made me cover my ears. He finally got up, but I noticed that he was looking more and more tired as the battle raged. He swayed back and forth, almost too tired to keep his sword-like arms raised. The once shiny armor was now looking dingy, and had mud and yellow Spore residue smeared all over it. A huge yellow circle was plastered on his chest where Breloom's fist had nailed him.

As Bisharp stood swaying in the distance, I noticed him doing something funny. He was rapidly blinking his eyes like something was in them. Occasionally he even raised a hand to his face, wiping them furiously. I looked intently at him through the tinted lenses of my goggles, trying to figure out what he was doing. Then, his next action revealed what it was. He placed a hand on the ground in front of him. His head was drooping now, and I could see that the Spore was taking effect. Breloom looked back at me, smiling, and I returned the gesture. As we shared the small celebration, I noticed Bisharp moving. He shook his head and looked up at Breloom, who wasn't paying much attention. He raised the arm that wasn't propping him up and pointed it upwards. Suddenly a pink beam of energy extended from it toward the roof, much like a samurai drawing his sword. The blade had to have been as tall as Bisharp was. Bisharp stood up and took a few steps towards Breloom, who barely had time to turn around, and swiped at him. I recognized the attack as Psycho Cut, a move that my Gallade loved to use. It was one of only a few physical Psychic moves, so it really complemented Gallade's fighting style and type.

Breloom noticed just in time to make a sluggish dodge to the right, but the blade still managed to clip him. As Breloom fled from it, the huge sword sliced rocks and stalagmites behind him, toppling them and adding even more things to evade in the obstacle course the cave had become. Finally, the Psycho Cut caught up with Breloom. It caught him in the shoulder, bringing him to his knees. My pokemon seemed to shake off the blow, though, quickly hopping back up to his feet. Since he was closer to full health, he was able to take a few blows without getting exhausted, but Bisharp was pushing his limits. One more huge attack could do him in for good.

I looked at the trail of strewn rocks behind Breloom. They had made a sort of barrier between my pokemon and I. I peered over them, and could just see Breloom’s mushroom-like head poking up. I saw him hop up a few times, making sure I was still back there. I realized that I couldn’t command my pokemon without seeing the battle, so I bolted for the wall of rubble. I chose my steps carefully, not wanting to make the rocks tumble with me on top of them, and slowly scaled the pile. Once I was at the top, I surveyed the scene beneath me. Breloom was locked in against Bisharp, and it looked just like a cage match. The only differing factor was that the opponent was out cold. Spore had completely taken effect, and Bisharp was snoozing against the wall. If the pokemon hadn’t tried to attack Ivy and I only moments before, I might have thought it was cute. He was sitting up against the wall, legs sprawled before him, with his head drooping to the side. He looked like he might tip completely over if he didn’t wake up soon.

I judged the scenario carefully. Bisharp was weak, there was no doubting that, and one more good hit could bring him to low health. If I was careful enough, I could even land the final blow while keeping him in his slumber. I reached for my rifle and bag, placing them on the ground in front of me. I pulled my last Hyperball out of my bag and cracked open my rifle. I inserted it and flicked off the safety; I knew the battle would be coming to an end soon.

When I looked back up, I saw the tiny green vines that covered Bisharp tighten. Even while asleep, he winced in pain as the plants absorbed energy from their host. Green particles floated through the air until they formed a large, translucent orb in the air, which slowly floated over to Breloom, healing him slightly. As the ball of energy melted onto Breloom’s skin, he closed his eyes, refreshed by it.

In the pit that the rock slide had caused, the sandstorm that was raging in the other part of the cave was less intense. The stone divider made a sort of barrier against it, and it blocked out most of the whipping winds. I knew Breloom more or less had an open shot at Bisharp, but I also realized that we needed to act quickly so it didn’t wake up. Being asleep would help me catch the Pokemon by quite a bit. I was about to tell Breloom to rush over for one more powerful punch, but then I remembered Bisharp’s health. Judging by its previous actions, it was getting weak. If I knocked him out, I wouldn’t be able to catch it, and all my previous battling would have been a waste. I needed to come up with something good that would leave Bisharp asleep, while also weakening him enough to bring his health down low. While I contemplated my options, I noticed Breloom hopping from side to side below me. He was excited and ready to finish off his opponent.

I looked my Pokemon over while he hopped around. Breloom were generally renowned for their punching skills and arm strength, but they also had massively powerful legs. Breloom could easily jump over me if he wanted. I looked around the cave to see how I could possibly exploit this. The section the two Pokemon were locked into was small and round, and the ceiling extended above them for at least a hundred feet. At the very top there was the small opening that the only light in the cavern filtered in through. As you looked up the wall to the opening, the walls got narrower, looking like an inverted funnel. All the way to the top, random rocks were jutting out precariously. I planned on combining Breloom’s punching skills and sheer leg strength for our next, and hopefully final attack.

“Breloom, do you see the rocks shooting out from the walls around the cave?” I asked. Breloom looked above him, surveying the outcroppings. While he looked upwards, I looked over at Bisharp to make sure he was still asleep. Our next attack could be lengthy, and if he woke up before it was executed, we could be in trouble. After Breloom had seen everything he needed to, he turned back to me, awaiting more orders.

“I want you to spring up and jump from rock to rock, eventually making your way up high near the ceiling. Do you think you can manage that, Breloom?” I asked. His face went from confident and happy to a bit nervous. He looked back up toward the sky, judging the rocks he would be climbing. I wanted this attack to work, but if he didn’t think he could make it, I wouldn’t force him to attempt it. After a second, he looked back at me with a new sense of determination. He nodded, trusting that I wouldn’t command him to do anything too dangerous.

“Fantastic. Scale the cavern walls, and when you’re at the top, I want you to drop a brutal Sky Uppercut down on Bisharp. Make sure you hit him though, because if you hit the ground you could be in for some serious recoil. Do you think you can pull it off, buddy?” I asked. I hated making my Pokemon do things they didn’t want to do.

Once more, Breloom judged the rocks above. This time he only looked at them for an instant. He looked back at me and smiled, then quickly jumped onto the nearest one, about ten feet above us. He continued up the wall, clearing gaps that were several feet. As he gained elevation, I got more and more nervous. If he fell he could be seriously injured, and then my park run might end. I ran through the endless scenarios in my head, but quickly put them aside. Now wasn’t the time for pessimistic thinking. I looked back up at Breloom and saw that he was far enough up that the attack would be effective.

“Breloom!” I yelled up at him. He heard me and aborted his next jump, instead perching on the rock above “That’s far enough!”

I looked back at Bisharp who was still snoozing. He was moving occasionally, though, so I knew we didn’t have a ton of time. I readied everything on my rifle in case I needed to pull off a quick shot.

“Okay, Breloom, it’s time to do what you’re best at! Drop a fist on him!” I shouted.

Breloom nodded and performed a leap of faith that made my heart jump into my throat. He was merely a silhouette against the sunlight that was pouring in above him. While he was in the air he reared his fist back. He was gaining momentum at a breathtaking pace, reminding me of a meteor plummeting towards Earth. The fall only took about five seconds total, but I felt like it was an eternity. If he missed, Breloom might not make it. If Bisharp awoke and even rolled over, Breloom could hit nothing but ground. The chances of success weren’t exactly on our side, but every time I looked over at Bisharp, he was still asleep and unsuspecting.

Finally, Breloom smashed onto the Pokemon, as far as I could tell. As soon as the blow struck, the cave was filled with dust. Everything around us shook, and the rock wall that I was standing on, which had only just been formed, came toppling down. I fell over backwards, but quickly recovered, readying my rifle again. I shook off the fall and ran back to where the battle was, choking on the dusty air I was being forced to breath. With the wall down, the Sandstorm that was raging could once more flow freely through the cave. I was relieved to see that it had lost a bit of its power, though.

I aimed my rifle into the center of the dirty fog. As soon as I could see Bisharp, I was going to fire my last Hyperball at him, hopefully capturing it for good. I waited for the dust to settle, shaking. I had no idea what I would see once things were clear. Hopefully I would see a weakened, but not quite knocked out Bisharp sitting there with Breloom on top of him. The worst thing that could happen was that Breloom had missed his mark and been injured instead. I suppose only time would tell.

    BP#6

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Bisharp's attack had left the two Pokémon in a bit of a cage made of rocks, and combined with the sandstorm, it was a little hard to see what was going on. The rocks were a little lower on the wall on her side, but she was still too far away to really make much sense out of it. In response, she turned to Haji through their mind link, and then she could see.

Instead of how things really were, she saw energy signatures. The funny thing was, the earth had energy in it too. The rocks were slightly transparent, as if they didn't have much substance. She could clearly see the form of Bisharp and Breloom though. They teemed with life. She could even see Tony from across the cavern.

He wasted no time getting closer to the battle, probably so he could give Breloom direction. He scaled the rock wall carefully, trying not to make anything fall. Then he took out his ball-firing rifle and loaded up what she assumed was a Hyperball, wanting to be ready for the capture attempt.

They looked around, and finally Tony came up with an idea. Bisharp was still sleeping.

“Breloom, do you see the rocks shooting out from the walls around the cave?”

Then, he revealed his plan. Tony wanted Breloom to scale the cavern walls by the rocks that were sticking out. Then, he wanted the Fighting type to sail down and hit Bisharp hard. Ivy was a little worried, and Haji shared the same sentiment. While Bisharp was tough, she wasn't sure how many more hits it could take, considering it was defenseless while asleep and having its health sapped away from it constantly.

Still, Breloom climbed. Ivy wasn't to interfere unless absolutely necessary, so she wouldn't. At the worst, Bisharp would be knocked out, so after some rest he'd be okay. There was always the chance that Breloom could miss or Bisharp could move too.

Then, a pulsing light coming from Bisharp drew her attention there. It formed like orbs within him, and they swirled and twisted like the wild winds. This was interesting, as to her knowledge, this particular Pokémon couldn't use a move called Sleep Talk in order to preform moves while sleeping. A lot of others could learn it, but that's not what he was doing. Haji then reminded her that some Pokémon could do amazing things even while sleeping, like Abra, who stayed asleep many hours a day.

Eventually, Tony called his Pokémon to stop climbing and announced the attack. “Okay, Breloom, it's time to do what you're best at! Drop a fist on him!” he called.

The Grass type nodded and launched off, streaking down to his target. Ivy watched his energy mold and sharpen as he did so. She also saw the swirling energy manifest around Bisharp. Now she figured that since it came from inside him, it must be his Hidden Power. She saw the wind energy swirl like a coat around Bisharp just as Breloom swooped in to strike.

She saw his fight connect with the Dark type, and she flinched. A dust cloud bloomed upon impact, aided by the sandstorm that reached over the top of the rock wall. His fist didn't say there long though, because then the wind reacted, and with a powerful gust she saw in the form of the flare of light, Breloom went flying back toward the rocks, the wind slicing him.

The impact with the wall made it rumble, and then rocks started falling out of place out the back. Unfortunately, Tony was standing up there, and he began to fall. Immediately, she snapped to action.

“Haji, quickly,” she said, and in a blur of energy they were gone from their spot, reappearing on top of the wall. She grabbed onto Tony as Haji teleported them again, and the world came back several yards from where the wall had been. She shook herself off as she evened out her breathing. She was getting better with this 'seconds to act' stuff.

The part of the wall that Tony had been perched on was now collapsed in, showing them a vein into the rock cage. Breloom was laying on the ground in front of the rubble, closest to the Bisharp. He was struggling to get up, but he'd make it. The Bisharp was still breathing too, asleep, she saw. His was energy dimmer, but it was there. Again, his health was sapped by the Leech Seed, making him just that much weaker.

“Ouch,” she said, pretty much summing up everything. “That could've been worse.” Beside her, Haji agreed. That Hidden Power had lessened a blow that could've knocked the Steel type out. Now she wondered what the Trainer was going to do.

OOC: Derp. Sorry, Winter, it's been awhile :/

As Breloom plummeted to the cavern floor, I turned my attention toward Bisharp. Expecting to see him lying asleep on the cold ground like always, I was surprised to see him glowing. His entire body was becoming a rich golden color that illuminated the cave. Though the light he emitted was pretty bright, he remained asleep somehow. Just before Breloom smashed into him like a wrecking ball, he dispelled all of the pent up energy, causing the impact from the Sky Uppercut to be significantly less. Even though Bisharp took a little bit less damage, the blow still managed to shake the cavern. Since I happened to be perched on a pile or rocks myself, it was no surprise when they gave way beneath me. I tried to maintain my balance, but my feet flew out from under me as the rocks slid away. Just before I fell, I heard my ranger’s voice through the chaos.

“Haji, quickly,” she said. I looked in the direction of her voice just in time to see Ivy and her Espeon completely vanish. I hoped she wasn’t leaving me stranded in the cave, but I knew that wasn’t the ranger way.

Suddenly, I felt hands on me. I looked up and saw that Ivy was right next to me, putting her arms around me. I wanted to say something, but suddenly I felt a strange sensation. For a split second I wasn’t sure what was going on, and my entire body seemed to be weightless, but when I opened my eyes, I was lying fifteen feet away from where the wall had crumbled, completely unharmed. Once again, I wanted to ask Ivy something and thank her for saving me, but I quickly remembered that there was a battle going on.

I raced through the whipping winds that were cutting my arms, trying to find my Pokemon. I climbed the much shorter and less structurally sound wall to see Breloom slowly getting up, shaking off damage from the Hidden Power blast. I looked all over the cave, waiting to see an angered Bisharp ready to pounce, but instead I saw him lying asleep in the same spot as before.

Breloom finally got all the way up from the ground. I looked him over and was surprised to see how much damage he had taken. The impact from the fall clearly took a lot out of him, but the sandstorm had also done some work, slicing his plant-like skin. He was a brownish color now, no doubt due to the dust clinging to his sweaty body.

I knew that now was my chance. I rushed to where I had dropped my rifle and quickly retrieved it. I opened it, made sure my final Hyperball was in place, and quickly shouldered it. I found my target, clicked the safety off, and took aim. I almost felt like the shot was too easy, but then I remembered how intense the battle had been. I remembered how Bisharp had attacked Ivy and I with almost no warning. These thoughts made me put my feelings of pity for the sleeping Pokemon aside. I fired, sending the Hyperball sailing the through the cave toward Bisharp. I knew the Pokemon was resilient, and I hoped the ball would contain him.

(OOC: It's alright, it's just that's one of the only major rules. Just keep it in mind for next time. Also, if you did want to end your run soon, now would be a good opportunity. Your call.)

Tony seemed to realize that this was his best shot at catching the Bisharp. He probably wouldn't stay asleep for long, and Breloom looked a bit tired from all the battling he had done. The fall, combined with the slicing winds, had taken a lot out of him, and she could see him panting from here. He was standing tall though, willing to fight on if his Trainer asked it of him.

The Trainer went to retrieve his rifle, already loaded and ready to go. He double checked to make sure it was okay, and then took a few seconds to shoulder his tool and aim up the shot. Bisharp didn't move except the gentle rise and fall of his chest, though she did see his arm twitch every now and then.

He fired, and the Hyperball went sailing through the air. Breloom got out of the way as the object arched toward the Steel type, and it hit the wild Pokémon with a metally ding. He was snatched up in a beam of red light, and the ball fell to the ground, rocking violently. Even while unconscious, Bisharp were fierce fighters. This one in particular was very dominant and strong, and it showed by how he fought the device.

Eventually it stopped, and a ping rang out through the cave as the sandstorm died down.

Ivy threw back her hood and shook her hair out as the sand stopped swirling around, brushing off her vest a little, even though it wasn't going to help that much. She carefully made it over the rock debris to the ball, nodding at Breloom as she passed. She inspected the ball she picked up before sliding it into her pocket next to the Haunter.

She made her way back to the Trainer with his Pokémon following. “Well, that was some match,” she said with a smile. “Haven't had an interesting one like that in a long time. Great work.” She then scanned the cave, locating just one other exit besides the way they had come. “Well, where to now?”

The ball rocked back and forth a few times, building suspense each time. Finally, a ringing noise signaled that Bisharp was mine and that the battle was over. I breathed a sigh of relief, and I have a feeling that Ivy and Breloom did as well. I couldn't remember the last time Breloom was part of such an intense battle, but I was happy to see he could handle himself pretty well. I saw Ivy walk over and pick the ball up, placing it in her pocket, so i decided to walk over to where she stood.

“Well, that was some match,” she said. I couldn't agree more, it had taken a lot out of me "Well, where to now?”

I thought about the two Pokemon I had caught. Haunter was the Pokemon I had come to the park for, and Bisharp was an added bonus. I smiled, knowing I had captured two great Pokemon. I looked Breloom over, seeing that he was exhausted, and zapped him into my Pokeball. I remembered that my other Pokemon were also pretty weak too. There were no other Pokemon I really wanted from the Valley, so I decided that now would be a nice place to end my run.

"Ivy, I think I'm ready to get out of here. I've got a pretty good collection now."

Tony returned Breloom to his ball after a few moments of deliberation. Then he said, “Ivy, I think I'm ready to get out of here. I've got a pretty good collection now.”

She nodded, agreeing. Haunter was a much sought-after Pokémon, being able to learn many techniques, and Bisharp was a strong battler. They were pretty good catches.

She motioned for Haji, and he nodded. The air then shimmered around them as they seemed to dissolve from the cave. When the world came to again, they were in front of the Meteor Valley Outpost. She led him in to finish up a little bit of paperwork, the release forms needed for his two new Pokémon. While he did that, she put the two through the machine that healed their wounds and registered Tony's Trainer Code into their ball so they were no longer wild.

After saying goodbye, she warped back to the Main Outpost to get started on her own paperwork, something she wasn't much looking forward to. She sunk into her rolling chair with a sigh when she reached her office, reaching for the forms she left on the corner of her desk. At least the run hadn't taken too long. It helped that the Trainer had known what he wanted and didn't hesitate about avoiding and distracting things he wasn't interested in.

She would make sure to leave good notes on Tony Heath. She approved.
