    @mlouden03; sorry for the delay, had a project to work on plus a couple of tests this week ^_^;;

Gaius decided that the best course of action was to just keep using Outrage. There were probably better options, but I could't blame the trainer - the thing with a technique like Outrage was that most of its users became so engrossed with what they were doing that it was difficult to make them stop, snap out of the so-called "battling frenzy" they were trapped in. I wondered, would the Dragon Pokemon be fast enough to keep up with the Abra's teleportation - enough to damage it more than damage himself? Or would he be too blinded by rage to actually do anything significant? He could possibly channel his current fury into energy, into power, to make his blows stronger against even the toughened defenses of the opponent, but even then, this could backfire on him, if he wasn't careful - emotions were a hard and unstable thing to control, anger especially, I'd think so.

The Dragon-Flying-type zoomed in on his target, his arms thrown out as if to catch it before it could attempt to flee. He kept flying around the area, willing himself to go faster, trying to keep up with the Psychic-type's teleportation speed. Every now and then, he'd swing one of his arms, sometimes managing to make a tiny bit of contact and damage, other times missing entirely. The chase continued around the whole battlefield that was the ledge of this mountain - one moment the wild entity would be on one of the rocks jutting out around the place, the next it'd be near the cave or the edge of the cliff, forcing its enemy to zip around in relentless pursuit, trying to wear it down, drain it of energy.

It was only when the Psi Pokemon slowed down - when it had gotten rather exhausted from all the pressure it was putting on its mental powers - that the Dragonite actually managed to do a decent amount of damage and tire it out further. One hand clutched the target that was so desperately trying to escape from its tight hold, and the other delivered angry blows, smacking the opponent as much as he could while it was still within his grasp. A few quick strikes and punches, and you could already see the creature's exterior covering start to bruise - slowly but surely, its defenses were starting to thin, starting to break down, from the attacks.

When the Abra regained some of its energy - it just needed a little breather from all that teleporting about - it flashed away from its enemy's clutches once more. This time, though, the Dragonite backed off, apparently satisfied for the moment. He had calmed down already, it seemed, his eyes no longer dancing crazily with pure, barely-controlled rage, and his movements were no longer frantic or desperate. He pulled a straight face now, almost dead serious, but I figured that was just his nature, the way he was. That was probably why he didn't seem that dazed even after his battling frenzy; he was much too focused, much too serious about things - he wasn't as confused as most would expect him to be after a technique like that.

The wild creature, upon noticing its foe's return to what looked to be his normal state, decided that perhaps it was its turn to attack, stir up some more trouble, while it could - while it wasn't being targeted just yet. It began to glow a pink-ish color, a thin bubble of Psychic energy surrounding it, radiating outwards. The Psi Pokemon then began to produce powerful waves of mental energy that took the form of multi-colored rings. The first few ones were quite large, easily passing through the dragon's head, coming to a stop somewhere around his med-section. The rings began to stack up on one another, going upwards, becoming progressively smaller as they neared his head; the same thing happened for his bottom half until he was completely surrounded by the flashy circles forming some sort of prison.

The gleam that these rings were emitting was dazzling, to say the least; the colors swirled harshly, almost blindingly, and the Dragonite was surrounded by these confusing lights. The odd energy waves tinkered with his mind as well, causing mental disorientation and pain - splitting headaches, jumbled-up thoughts... I didn't know to what extent Gaius's partner had been affected, but I was pretty sure the Pokemon wasn't thinking clearly right about now. The trainer would have to proceed rather cautiously now - confusion was always a frustrating challenge in battle. Still, the Abra was pretty exhausted now - and keeping that vortex-like cage stable for a couple of moments was sure to drain it of quite a bit of energy as well - it wouldn't be long before the trainer could attempt to capture it.

OOC: Would I possibly have been able to call him out of being stuck in outrage? I assumed it was three turns like normal.

    IC:

Gaius watched as the battle raged on. Dragonite quickly tried to attack Abra before he could Teleport, and was able to get several attacks in on the Psi Pokemon. The Psychic type Pokemon then retaliated, as multicolored rings appeared and surrounded the Dragon type Pokemon. Dragonite looked disoriented and confused, as if it couldn't tell what was going on.

'I hope I can take control of the battle again. My Dragonite looks like it's starting to tire out and was slightly injured by Abra's attack. I need to figure out a way to quickly damage the Pokemon enough for me to capture. That way, I can use Roost after the battle to try and recover some of Dragonite's vitality. Perhaps a combination attack would be best, so I can hit it twice in succession. However, Dragonite currently is confused. So no matter what attack I try, it may end up hitting itself. My best bet would be to try and call to Dragonite so I can shake it free of confusion. That way I'd be guaranteed to actually hit the wild Abra. Hm..so it only comes down to move choice. Extremespeed could be my best bet, like how I was thinking before. Thunder Wave as well would be a good option too. I'll just go with the plan I thought of a few moments ago.'

The trainer called out to his Pokemon. "Dragonite, try to break free of the confusion. I know you're suffering from the effects of Outrage, and Abra's attack on you, but don't give up hope. Just keep your focus on this battle and you should be able to attack normally. Once you're back to normal, use Thunder Wave to paralyze Abra. The electricity should drastically slow him down, allowing you to hit him a lot easier. After he's paralyzed, use Extremespeed so you can hit him before he has a chance to make a move at all. The combined force of the attacks should heavily damage him."

@mlouden03; Well, technically, Outrage can last between 2-3 turns, but that's kind of beside the point. I think that, with a high quality/creative post, I would've allowed the Outrage to end immediately after that one turn had you tried to call out another attack. A lot of non-canon or non-in-game things can be possible in the Park with a sufficient amount of creativity and quality as well as some decent reasoning/explanation to back it up with. :)

    BP#3

My earlier assumption was correct: the Abra would eventually tire from controlling those multi-colored energy rings, or would be distracted by something else, and would stop empowering them with its mental strength.

The trainer hadn't decided to try and help speed up the process, though; he'd instead called for a Thunder Wave and ExtremeSpeed combo, even though his Pokemon was effectively trapped and dazed by the gleaming lights. Still, his assaults had worked. I wouldn't quite call it a successful plan, as not everything turned out to be in his favor, but it wasn't a complete failure, either.

The Dragonite had begun with a status-inducing technique, releasing multiple tendrils of electricity in the opponent's general direction - they were rather spread out, though, as if he didn't know where exactly his target was; the swirling mass of blinding energy hindered his vision, kept him from spotting his opponent. The yellow streaks shot through the air, clashing with the Psychic waves surrounding the dragon as well as with the Psi Pokemon that was sustaining them. It fueled more of its energy into the rings, trying to block off the electrical bolts, as though it could sense the danger they posed if they would be able to latch onto it, but the circles were no barrier - they weren't solid or resistant or particularly strong, no matter how defined the Abra's mental prowess was; they weren't some sort of shield, or protection, and the wild entity realized that soon enough, but not without wasting a decent amount of its strength trying to fortify something that didn't really stand a chance.

Despite being in a state of confusion, the Dragon Pokemon was still a pretty darn strong creature, controlling those erratic little beams of electricity steadier towards his foe. The Psychic-type, perhaps too tired from controlling the Psywave technique to teleport away, seemed to have decided that the best course of action was to counter-attack with some sparks of its own. It unleashed a wave of charges, little crackles of electricity that intercepted the tendrils of the foe halfway through the air.

The volts latched onto each other, painting the atmosphere a bright, dangerous golden yellow. The Abra dropped control of the Psywave attack immediately, the glimmering rings dissipating into thin air one by one, and instead focused all its power into this Shock Wave in an effort to redirect the paralyzing technique's path. The Dragon-Flying-type didn't seem to make any attempts at opposing the wild being's force, at strengthening his Thunder Wave assault - perhaps his confusion was getting the better of him. He was soon overpowered, the Psi Pokemon pulling through as he flung, using sheer willpower, the electrical bolts right back at the one who'd wielded them in the first place.

The tendrils clung to the dragon's skin, slowly seeping their way into his system, and shocking him out of his dazed state - for now, anyway. As the jolting energy conquered his bloodstream, he began to feel numb all over, unable to really feel or move his limbs in the most efficient way possible. He did remember this, though: Gaius's command to use ExtremeSpeed.

And so, despite his motion-hindering condition, he gathered all of the swiftness he had left in him and pushed himself forwards, heading straight for the Psychic-type. His bulky body rocketed towards the foe, and when he slammed into his target, his weight and the force of the impact seemed to overwhelm the little Abra, knocking the wind right out of it as it collapsed, or was shoved downwards perhaps, to the hard rocky ground. The Dragonite took to the sky immediately afterward - or, at least, as fast as he could with all the numbing electricity in his veins - leaving the foe on the ground, breathing heavily. Pretty soon, I assumed, Gaius would be able to try and go in for the catch, though personally I thought his partner's paralysis was [going to be] a bigger concern than the actual capture attempt.

Gaius watched as his Pokemon blindly shot electricity all around as it tried to find its target. As the attack seemed to miss when it connected with Abra's electricity, Gaius began to worry, but kept his eyes on the battle. As Dragonite was struck by the electricity, Gaius slightly cringed seeing his Pokemon's attack fail. The trainer was disheartened by the sight of his Pokemon's injuries, but knew that he had to somehow prevail in the battle if he was to capture Abra.

'I hope that my Pokemon isn't too debilitated to continue fighting. I would hate to have to switch out in the middle of combat. Doing so would undoubtedly give Abra an advantage in being able to recoup and regain its composure. Although my Pokemon isn't doing the best right now, I need to find a way to keep the pressure on so I could move in and catch it. Dragonite does have access to a healing move, which may allow it to rid itself of both confusion and paralysis if it succeeds. Then I could have the Pokemon follow up with another Extremespeed attack. The strength of another powerful attack like that should weaken Abra enough for me to move in and catch him. I just hope that all of this goes according to plan.' The trainer smiled playfully as he began to speak.

"Dragonite, use Heal Bell to quickly recover from your status conditions. As soon as you're feeling better, use another Extremespeed attack. Being cured of Paralysis and confusion should make sure you hit your mark, then I'm sure I can try to capture it after your attacks are finished." The young man waited to watch as the round unfolded, hoping that Dragonite would be able to follow his commands.

The Abra was down for the moment it seemed, the last ExtremeSpeed attack having knocked it to the ground. And so, Gaius decided to take advantage of the situation, using it as an opportunity to relieve his Dragonite of his current status ailments with a Heal Bell technique.

Taking deep breaths in and out, the dragon gathered quite a bit of his energy, concentrating in producing a sort of humming chime-like sound from his body. His striated belly vibrated, the rhythmic melody soothing all that heard it, calming their nerves and relaxing their tensed mind and muscles. I definitely felt much better after hearing the lulling sound, and no doubt the Dragon-Flying-type did too - he didn't seem to be as dazed as he was earlier, and his movements weren't as sluggish either, his condition gradually getting better and better the longer the curing song kept playing.

What the trainer might not have expected, though, was that the healing technique had affected the wild creature as well - after all, it was a sound-based move, and the Psychic-type had most certainly heard it. It suddenly bolted upright into a sitting position, its features relaxed and refreshed, reinvigorated. The Psi Pokemon was undoubtedly in a much better state now, both physically and mentally, than it'd been just moments before.

Alert and feeling much more energized, more mentally-prepared, the Abra had little trouble escaping from the brunt of the opponent's attack, even though he'd executed it with such agility. Immediately after the bells had stopped ringing, the Dragon Pokemon had charged once again with a new burst of energy and power surging through him. The wild entity had been ready for this, though, and had managed to teleport away, evading most of the force and damage of the assault.

The trainer's Pokemon, however, suffered a bit of health loss on his part as well when the Psychic-type appeared behind him and decided to attack. It rammed its head into the orange back of its much large foe, using its weight to strengthen the collision's impact, leaving somewhat of a dent or mark on the dragon's exterior with its pointed ears. It bounced back as the Dragonite shifted and yelped, more in shock than in pain.

The Abra teleported itself once more to a much safer location, farther away from the edge of the ledge and from us. It seemed content with what it had done for now, as if planning something much larger for later, as if reserving what mental energy it had left for a much more complicated assault. That is, if the trainer gave it the chance to do that at all - the wild being was exhausted, running out of vigor, and Gaius could probably try his hand at capturing the guy right now if he wanted to.

OOC: I just wanted to try and make sure I have highest rate possible lol

    IC:

Gaius smiled as he watched his Dragonite quickly heal and speed towards the wild Pokemon. Although he had not intended for the wild Abra to be healed as well, the fact that is his own Pokemon was rid of its debilitating conditions certainly made up for the wild Pokemon being slightly healed as well. The trainer continued to watch his Dragonite in action and grimaced slightly when he saw that the Extremespeed attack only did minimal damage. 'I know that my Dragontie is starting to get a bit tired, but I'm surprised he didn't ensure that the move connected. Hopefully Abra doesn't prove too difficult to capture considering all of the work that I've put into trying to attain one. I guess the only thing I can do is make sure I keep my guard up to ensure it doesn't retaliate too much.'

Gaius paused in thought as he saw the wild Pokemon Teleport behind his Dragon-type Pokemon and ram, head-first, into Dragonite. "Come on Dragonite, I know he's fast with his teleportation but you should have been able to see that coming." The trainer frowned and thought for a moment. 'I guess I need to train him more on avoiding attacks, even from those he cannot see. Perhaps that can be part of the new training regimen when I actually succeed in capturing this wild Pokemon. If Dragonite takes too many more hits, it won't be able to recover its strength all at once with Roost. I better find a way to end it quickly.' Gaius then paused and looked at the wild Pokemon's condition.

'I know that the Abra is pretty weak now, I could probably manage to capture it right now if I want to. With the way it's acting, I don't want to give it any opportunity to turn the tide of battle around by healing and then coming back with a counter strike. I guess the time to act is right now!' The young man reached into his pocket and pulled out an empty Park Ball. 'I should probably stick to my lower-tier balls at first, in case I actually come across a stage one or two Pokemon that I actually want. However, if this ball fails, I'll try a ball that has a greater chance of succeeding. There's no way that I'm going to miss out on finally catching an Abra. I've been after this specific Pokemon for quite a while, and I know that its immense power would make my team incredibly strong.'

Gaius then looked to where the wild Pokemon had teleported to, and ready his throw. 'It's a bit further away then I'd like it to be, but I'm sure I can manage to hit it if I aim correctly.' The trainer steadied his arm for a moment and then threw the Park Ball at the weakened Abra. He then watched as it was sucked inside and waited to see if the capture was successful.

    OOC: Gender of Abra? ^_^

    NBP#10

The trainer seemed to realize that if the battle went on for much longer, his Dragonite might have to suffer even more damage than what was necessary. Both Pokemon were exhausted, breathing heavily with a few battle wounds to show for. It was time to end this bout, and that was exactly what Gaius decided to do.

His hand quickly found itself grasping an unused Parkball, gripping it tightly as his arm swung back to prepare for the throw. The teen drew in a deep breath as he took aim, his body tensed and alert as he eyed his prize with determination. He wasn't going to let this opportunity just slip away - he wasn't going to let the Abra teleport and flee, nor was he going to miss his mark, not when there was simply too much at stake.

Thrusting his arm forward in one fluid motion, his wrist flicked as the orb left his fingertips. It soared through the air at a rapid pace; within seconds, it had bopped the Psychic-type on the head, sucking it into the compartment with a gleaming red beam.

The sphere dropped to the ground with a loud thunk as it collided with the hard, rocky surface - I was surprised it didn't end up with a dent or two - and proceeded to roll about. It wriggled and squirmed, in a sense, shaking feverishly as if the Psi Pokemon was putting up quite a struggle from inside. The seconds ticked by, but they seemed so much longer than that... Until finally, the trembling came to a stop, and we could all breathe again.

I grinned and congratulated the trainer before walking over to pick up the Parkball; Gaius finally got the Pokemon he really wanted! Or, one of them, at least - still something to be grateful for, right? As I walked back to him and his dragon, I tucked the orb into another pocket of my bag, for safe-keeping.

Nodding at his tired-looking Dragonite, I told the trainer, "He looks pretty bruised from the battle; Abra certainly put up quite a fight - so would you like to take a rest first before we move on? And where would you like to go next - caves or back to wandering around the valley?"

Gaius looked at the Pokeball as it shook several times and then finally stopped moving. "Yes, I actually got an Abra. This makes today actually worth the trip. I can't wait til I can actually evolve it!" The trainer quickly went over and picked up the Pokeball, and glanced at it before walking back towards his ranger and giving it to her. "One Pokemon down, one more to go. The only other Pokemon I really want on this run is Zorua, and I still have a lot of chances to find one." The trainer smiled and looked towards his ranger.

"Anyway, what were we talking about before all of this happened? It was about how you had different options to be a ranger and how your parents gave you your first Pokemon, right? Well, I was just wondering, what other things have you done besides been a ranger? Has this been the only job you've ever had? What exact kind of qualifications do you need for the job?" The trainer paused for a moment and began to speak once more.

"Anyway, I've heard that the park will be getting a new shipment of Pokemon soon. Part of me wishes that I could encounter them right now, but I know they're probably not ready for public catching yet. I also read that you guys are going to be splitting up the great lakes into two separate areas, just wondering, what made you decide to do that?" He thought for a moment and then continued to speak. "Also, is there going to be a haunted manor or something for new ghost-type Pokemon? That sure sounds like a fun area to explore. How long did it take you guys to build the house?" Gaius stopped speaking for a moment and then turned to his Dragonite.

"You could use some rest, Dragonite. I don't want you to be too fatigued to battle in our next encounter, and I don't want to use one of my healing items yet. Can you try to use Roost so you can recover your strength? After you're done healing up, we can keep going on trying to look for a Pokemon. By the way, Dragonite, you did quite a good job in the battle with Abra. I'm quite happy that you were able to assist in that Pokemon's capture."

Gaius waited for his Pokemon to use Roost and then planned to walk with his ranger, his finger ready to press play on the Zorua disc that he had just loaded.

Gaius certainly seemed a lot happier now that he had successfully captured an Abra. The battle was finally over, and now he was back to his curious, questioning ways.

He prodded me for answers to his questions from before the fight had started, and even asked me new ones, too; he began talking about the new zones of the Park that weren't open to the general public just yet as well as the rumored new Pokemon about to be shipped in. Somewhere along those lines, he had also told his Dragonite to take a rest and heal himself up with a move called Roost.

The said technique took a while to perform - especially since the dragon had quite a bit of energy and health to regain - so I decided to take this time and ramble a bit, myself, in response to the trainer's inquiries. The creature relaxed his wings as he landed on the ledge, becoming something of a sitting duck of sorts, resting serenely on the ground as I began to speak.

"I'm a bit of a trainer, myself, actually; I've pretty much been alongside Pokemon my whole life, whether having hem as partners in combat or just companions on any regular, ol' day. Ever since I got my first Pokemon, I've always been looking to improve myself in every aspect possible, whether in relation to Pokemon and battling or just as a person in general. I've gone off on journeys and adventures of my own, though sadly, I hadn't been able to accomplish things that were exceptionally note-worthy - really the most, I think, that I've done is dedicating myself to the Park and its development.

"Qualifications? Well, first and foremost, you have to be dedicated, I'd say; someone who really loves what he or she's doing, looking at ranger-ing as not so much a job as it is a hobby or pastime of sorts, or as an opportunity to be doing something significant in one's own little ways. We also went through quite a bit of training and tests before being accepted into the position - learning how to tend to the various plants and wildlife in the Park, learning first aid for both people and Pokemon, going through some physical strengthening exercises to keep in shape as well as learning some form of self-defense in case something terrible happened... Stuff like that, y'know?

"Yeah, the Park staff decided to "split up the Lakes," if you want to put it that way. There are just way too many Water-types already, wouldn't you agree? And the influx of new species of Pokemon will bring even more of them. We came to the decision that maybe it would be better off having two separate areas, for convenience and health reasons as well; it would be easier for both rangers and park-goers to narrow down the exact zone they would want to explore, searching for a specific Pokemon, as well as give the entities more room to breathe, to live - it was for the sake of their well-being as well as the balance between living creatures.

"As for the Ruined Manor, it was just recently discovered not too far from here - from Meteor Valley, I mean. It's pretty much an old house, in just as bad a condition as the Abandoned Power Plant is in; full of cobwebs and debris and cracks in the ceilings and walls. The Ghost-types that inhabit this area have recently been found to have taken a much better liking to the manor, spending most of their time wandering down the corridors of that place. The Park's staff is still working on making sure that the area is safe enough to explore - the last thing we want is for the structure to collapse during a run through there."

By the time I had finished speaking, the Dragon Pokemon had completed his healing technique as well, definitely appearing much more refreshed and energetic than he was just moments before. He moved about with renewed strength and vigor, as if the battle hadn't even scratched him at all!

While I had been talking, though, I had noticed a glint of yellow near one of the boulders the Abra had teleported to during the fight. The object's smooth, round-looking surface reflected back the rays of sunlight as it lay serenely in the tangle of plants sprouting about the area. I quickly went over to pick it up then handed it to the trainer. "Here, a yellow apricorn," I said quite frankly.

Gaius, ready to move on, inserted the Zorua voice disc into the PokePlayer and hit play, eager to find the little fox. But no Tricky Fox Pokemon responded to the recorded cries - instead came a blue-furred bat from inside the cave. The first thing I noticed about the creature was its pink, heart-shaped nose as its black wings flapped to keep it airborne.

"Any interest in a Swoobat?" I asked the trainer.

Gaius watched as his Dragonite slowly began to heal itself. The trainer could see his Pokemon's injuries slowly fade away as his dragon-type Pokemon looked stronger and stronger as time passed. He then turned his head to his ranger, who had begun to speak.

"So, you haven't got any badges or anything? What kind of Pokemon do you seem to favor the most? How many Pokemon do you have in your collection? Do you only catch Pokemon that you plan on using or do you catch them because you like to have a wide variety to call upon in battle?" He paused for a moment, and then responded to her next statement.

"The tests and such I understand. You have to make sure only those who are actually qualified to be here help others as rangers. Although I'm surprised you had to learn about plants and first aid and such, those things I would usually associate with being a botanist or a medic, not a Pokemon ranger. Honestly I'm even more surprised that you have to learn physical self-defense. Are you trained to use it on Pokemon in case an angry Machoke or something comes and tries to hurt you or your customer and you can't get to your Pokeball? Doesn't that go against the general rules of people hurting Pokemon and such, I thought only Pokemon were supposed to battle other Pokemon, or does your park allow for other such contingencies in case something comes up? Furthermore, how actually effective would you be against a Pokemon anyway? I couldn't see you, or anyone even, being able to go hand-to-hand with a Scyther and still having your appendages when you're done." The trainer chuckled for a moment as a picture of his ranger arm-less popped into his head.

"Yeah, there are a lot of water types, although I do see the idea of having them all be in one place. If someone wants a water type, they knew exactly where to go. Now, if they want two water Pokemon that are in different zones, they'll have to pay double the price, as well as the cost of any voice discs and such. I'd say it's a good deal for you guys, that's for sure. Although if the Pokemon were running into problems or health issues I would understand them having to move them into separate regions. I was planning on going there anyway at some point but now I will have to decide which place I want to go to. Overall I guess it's dependent on the person whether the change will be a good one or a bad one." He smiled and continued to speak.

“The Ruined Manor does seem pretty nice, although I hope it doesn’t run into any problems like people getting stuck in there, or something. It would be unfortunate if something were to happen to the house, considering it is a pretty old building. You wouldn’t want the whole thing to collapse or for the floor to give way. That could prove to be a major issue. It would be even worse if there were actually people in there when such a thing happened. I know that most trainers would simply freak out if they fell into some dark and musty old basement that’s full of ghosts, but I know that I’d be alright no matter what happened. I usually have a knack for getting myself out of bad situations, no matter how dire they may seem to be. Ghost-type Pokemon themselves would be quite a treat to try and go after, although, ironically enough, that’s not one of the reasons that I came to Meteor Valley. My first Pokemon was a Gengar so I kind of figured that I didn’t really need any other Ghost-types at this point. Sprititomb would be a nice addition, though, so I might check that place out later at some point. Honestly there’s a lot of different Pokemon that I want for different reasons, and very few of them are in the same area of the park. I only hope that I can find and catch them elsewhere, otherwise I’m going to be coming here a lot, and therefore spending a lot of money here as well.” As Gaius finished speaking, he noticed that his Dragonite looked fully recovered. The trainer then walked over to his Dragon-type Pokemon and rubbed its back, trying to congratulate it for its earlier performance.

Gaius then turned to his ranger, and saw that she had found a yellow Apricorn. He then quickly put the Apricorn into his Apricorn box for safe-keeping, and then hit play on his Poke-player. The Zorua disc that was inside repeated on and on numerous times, however what responded to the sound was not the Pokemon that he had hoped for.

His ranger quickly pointed out the presence of a large, blue-furred bat that she had seen exit from the mouth of the caves. The Pokemon had two large, connected ears, two black, oval-shaped eyes, and a large pink, heart-shaped nose. There was also a light-blue tuft of fur that encircled its neck, similar to that of Mandibuzz’s tuft. The Pokemon had two small feet with three toes on each foot, and an odd looking tail that had two prongs on the end. Instead of arms, the Pokemon had two large, bat-like wings that it used to fly.

Gaius looked at the newly-arrived Pokemon and tilted his head. “I don’t know if I want one or not, I have never seen one before.” He paused, contemplating his ranger’s question. “Let’s see what my Pokedex has to say about this. The trainer pulled out his Pokedex and held it in the direction of the Swoobat.

The black Pokedex beeped for a moment, and then began to speak. “Swoobat, the Courting Pokémon and the evolved form of Woobat. Swoobat can fire a variety of sound waves from the holes of their noses, some powerful enough to break rocks. Woobat and Swoobat originate from the Unova region and can be found in caves or mountains. Its most powerful attacks are Psychic and Future Sight. Woobat can be bought at any Pokemart in Unova, as well as at marts in other regions.”

Gaius paused as the Pokedex entry finished. ‘Do I really need another Psychic-type Pokemon? I just caught an Abra, and Woobat/Swoobat don’t seem too hard to get anyway. I’m probably better off just running away from this Pokemon.’ The trainer then turned to his ranger and began to speak. “No, sorry. I don’t think I have a use for a Swoobat currently.” The trainer then began to turn away from the Pokemon and played his Zorua disc again. ‘I hope I actually find a Zorua on this run. It would be a shame if they all ran to the Haunted Manor already.’

Swoobat was another one of those Pokemon that were rather strong but extremely common. And by common, I mean - or at least, the trainer means - purchasable in a local PokeMart. Considering what Gaius had told me so far about him and his heredity and whatever else, he seemed exactly the type of rich kid who wouldn't mind spending a couple extra thousand PokeDollars on a worthy 'mon; he'd probably just brush off the amount like it was nothing.

Naturally, he was not interested in battling this Courting Pokemon. And naturally, it was very much interested in us. Naturally.

We had just begun our descent from the rocky ledge when I addressed more of his remarks. All the while I'd been answering the trainer's questions as patiently as I could while he, on the other hand, had been firing them at me relentlessly - he just was not stopping, and I did not know how much more I could take. "I have a few badges, but no complete set from any region; I'm not a professional battler so I don't strive as hard to earn them, I guess you could say."

I was starting to get real tired of his curiosity, to the point where I was answering him in fragments:
What kind of Pokemon do you seem to favor the most?

"Water-types. Mostly. Fighting-types, too. Ranged or physical attackers, doesn't really matter."

How many Pokemon do you have in your collection?

    "I dunno. Twenty-ish maybe."

Do you only catch Pokemon that you plan on using or do you catch them because you like to have a wide variety to call upon in battle?

"Uh. Both? I use a rather wide variety of Pokemon in battle, and I like using what I catch, so."

"...Although I'm surprised you had to learn about plants and first aid and such, those things I would usually associate with being a botanist or a medic, not a Pokemon ranger." He launches onto another subject and another set of comments and questions altogether.

"We have to care for the wildlife in the Park, too. Gotta make sure the Pokemon are living in a prospering or suitable environment; can't have their homes and resources just wither to death, unless that's the kind they agree with. Besides, we get our herbs and healing items from plants as well."

"I'm even more surprised that you have to learn physical self-defense. Furthermore, how actually effective would you be against a Pokemon anyway?"

"Safety precautions in case of poachers and other criminals," was all I could say. Did he really think we trained to go hand-to-hand with Pokemon? Especially the large, powerful ones?

However, before I could respond to his thoughts on the Ruined Manor and the splitting of the Lakes, the Flying-Psychic-type swooped in front of us, startling us mid-conversation and forcing us to stop in our tracks. Balancing myself cautiously on the rather narrow mountain trail, I turned to Gaius and sighed. "Another one who doesn't seem to want to leave us alone," I muttered in a weary tone; I didn't like failed escape attempts any more than he or any other trainer did. As before, I proceeded to present him with the same two options: "Wanna buy a doll or shall we try to run again?"

OOC: So sorry for not posting already :(

IC: Gaius was surpised that he had to use a doll yet again. The trainer rolled his eyes and began to speak. "Seriously, I was hoping that my good luck would hold for a bit. I mean, I just actually caught a Pokemon that I really wanted, but I guess that it was too much to ask for me to get lucky twice in a row. Now I'm encountering this Swoobat who apparently is quite common in Unova, which means that it would be a waste for me to catch it here. At this point, I wouldn't really mind what I caught as long as was something slightly hard to get." Gaius sighed, and then continued to speak. "I might as well just use a Pokemon doll. I don't want to waste more time here then need be, there are probably other wild Pokemon waiting just around the proverbial corner back in Kanto." He then reached into his pocket and pulled out five hundred dollars and handed it to the ranger. He turned to his ranger and continued to speak, hoping that she would answer more of his questions.

"Do you like water types because you started with a Mudkip? That would seem to make sense if that was the reason why. What fighting types do you have? I have a Hitmonlee and Poliwrath, myself. You only have twenty Pokemon, that's surprising. I would expect someone who was a ranger would have a large collection, or do you never actually use the park as a guest? Oh, yeah, I never really thought that you had to actually focus on maintaining the habitat as well as using the various plants and medicines for healing your own Pokemon in the park. Is that were most of the items in your Park mart come from, the plants? I only ask because I haven't seen some of the items that were listed in normal Pokemarts, so I suppose they must be different or hard to come by compared to your traditional Revive or Potion." The trainer paused and she mentioned poachers.

"Are poachers really that big of a deal here? I mean, I know you guys are park security and everything, but I would think that you guys had security cameras or something so you guys could track Pokemon movements and check up on them. Wouldn't a system like that also be able to catch poachers in the act? Why don't you guys use some form of human tranquilizer dart or something to subdue criminals. I'm sure that would be easier than trying to beat them in hand-to-hand combat, especially when they may be armed. I know that Team Rocket is a pretty nefarious group of Pokemon thieves, and I guess I wouldn't be too surprised if they actually tried to rob this place sooner or later. Even though it is kind of far out from their operations, I'm sure a place that's teeming with so many Pokemon would make a tempting target. Perhaps you guys should install electrical fences at the perimeter of the park, so that you can keep unwanted visitors out."

As he finished talking, the trainer turned away from his ranger, hoping to continue on with his expedition. He then pressed play his Zorua disc once again, hoping to encounter the rare Pokemon.

@mlouden03; Really sorry for the delay; had my exams this week so didn't have much time to work on the post. ^_^

    NBP#13

After the trainer pulled out another 500 dollars for the Pokedoll, he proceeded to prod me with more questions. As was expected, anyways.

I tossed the Swoobat the pink stuffed toy, which it caught with its wings then went swooping on its merry way back into the cave from which it had emerged from. That, at least, had been taken care of quickly enough. Answering a couple more questions from Gaius would take much longer, for sure, and my patience was already running thin. The trainer was such a talkative and curious type that I was almost - almost - starting to get used to expecting another question thrown my way right after answering the previous on. I'd probably get so accustomed to his rather nosy or questioning ways that I'd think my next trainer as an extremely shy or quiet person just because he or she wouldn't be asking me one question after the other.

We made our way down the hill as I began to speak. "Yeah, I guess I grew to like Water-types because of my starter. I have a couple of Fighting-types actually; Machamp, Heracross, Gallade, and Breloom. And no, I guess I've never actually been the type to go on runs myself, though I have gone on a few--" I shrug, thinking about all those times I spent doing ranger duties but never really entering the Park much as a trainer looking to catch Pokemon, "--and I usually don't buy from the local PokeMarts. I kindof prefer spending my time training up the Pokemon I already have over getting new ones.

"Yes, we get a lot of our Park Shop items from the plants growing all around the Park. All of our healing items, like Energy Roots and Revival Herbs, were made from various plants around the area. We used to have stocks of chemical-based healing items like Potions and Revives you would normally find in the PokeMart, but they were, as you presumed, pretty hard to come by, at least when you compare them to stuff you can make from the plants growing right in the National Park. We replaced those bottles with the herbs and plants that you can purchase in the Shop now; they're more nature- or eco-friendly anyway, and they at least don't sting unlike when you spray squirts of medicine onto the wounds - I will say, however, that some Pokemon don't particularly like their taste."

When the trainer began talking about poachers and security systems and things of that sort, I immediately regretted even bringing up the subject of Pokemon thieves. He did bring up a somewhat valid point, though, making me stop in my tracks and actually pause and think about it for a moment. "I wouldn't exactly say that it's that 'big of a deal' but there have been a couple of incidents in the past, so we want to or have to be prepared in case something similar happens again. Even with safety measures like security cameras or electrical fences, I'm pretty sure we'd still have to be prepared and trained, just in case. That being said, the gates to each of the zones have been installed with fingerprint- and eye- recognition/scanning systems so they can only be unlocked by park staff. Electrical fences are a no-no, I would think, because that could potentially harm the Pokemon if they happen to try and touch the wires. Even with tranquilizer darts I still think us rangers would still have to be trained in some form of combat or be physically fit, just in case things go horribly wrong. I'll pitch that and the security camera idea to one of the higher-ups, though, could be of use."

All the while we had been talking, we had also been walking around the valley again, and I'd kept my eyes peeled for any signs of movement, looking for our next encounter. The PokePlayer continued to whirr beside me with the cries of a Zorua. I shifted my gaze to the right and nearly jumped when I spotted what seemed to be a young child leaning against one of the trees bordering the sides of the valley.

Curious yet somewhat anxious and worried - maybe even afraid - at the same time, I slowly and rather cautiously approached the kid, Gaius following behind me. When we had neared him, I opened my mouth to ask him what he was doing here, if he was lost, standard things like that, when he suddenly smirked slyly.

The child stood up then, and that was when I noticed the tuft of black fur sticking out of his backside - a tail. Suddenly everything made sense to me as he began to change back to his original form, the illusion fading. The little trickster shifted from child to small fox in a matter of moments, the mischievous expression never leaving its face.

I turned and grinned at the trainer. "Well it looks like this Zorua's looking to play some games. You up for it?"

    IC:

Gaius slowly watched as the Swoobat flew back into its cave. "Terrific, the sooner that thing is away from me, the sooner I can go back to actually finding Pokemon that are worth my time. I don't know if you like Swoobat, but seriously it's of no use to me at all. Although I've already caught one of the Pokemon on my must have list this run, I hope I can encounter the other before my run is complete." The trainer looked longingly out into the valley and then turned towards his ranger.

"I was after Abra as I have yet to obtain a powerful Psychic-type Pokemon, and Alakazam, its evolution, is one of the strongest and fastest Psychic types available. I also heard of that Alakazam has another, more powerful evolution that has been achieved somewhere far away. I bought a stone from a seafaring merchant who said that it would allow me to unlock such power on an Alakazam. However, since I did not have one at the time, I immediately registered to come here and bought the appropriate supplies so I could try to catch one myself." Gaius smiled as he thought of the Abra that was waiting for him at the end of the run.

"I'm looking for Zorua for pretty much the same reason. I don't have any powerful Dark types Pokemon besides Tyranitar and Krookodile. I know how rare Zorua is, as it’s only found in Unova, so I thought my best bet would be to find one here. Have you ever had a Zoroark, or have you ever battled one? How strong do you think they are? I know their special illusion abilities are quite useful considering they can blend in and become other Pokemon at will if the Pokemon is nearby. I can just imagine the fun kind of mind games I can play if I get my hands on one of those powerful Pokemon. Honestly if I'm able to find and catch one of those, I may just leave the park at that point. I know that you guys are holding some special sort of promotion since you're getting new Pokemon, and I wouldn't mind signing up again so I could access the special deal that you have going on." The trainer paused at the thought of encountering a Zorua. Then, he heard his ranger speak up. He waited until she finished speaking and then responded.

"That makes sense, your starter Pokemon influencing the kind of Pokemon that you normally catch. Although, I'm surprised that you have a lot of Fighting type Pokemon. You don't look like the kind of battle-crazed workout girl that most Fighting type experts seem to be, although I know that could be considered a stereotype. I actually picked up a Machamp and Heracross myself in Veridian City, although I have yet to own or even see Breloom and Gallade. Why haven't you went on runs a lot? Did you just not have the time to do so? I know being a ranger must be busy but I'm sure they give you days off as well. I can kind of understand you only wanting to have a small group of Pokemon, instead of a large collection. I have over 70 Pokemon, and honestly I barely only use a handful of them. I usually rotate fully-evolved Pokemon out of my team to make room for the smaller Pokemon that need experience to reach their full potential. I'm sure I have my own section at Professor Oak's by now considering how many I've managed to acquire. Since I only use a small number of guys that I own, I know most of them don't have a wide variety of attacks. I've only bought additional moves for, like, 10 percent of them." He then paused and continued to speak.

"That's so fascinating, do you know if it's possible for people to grow them at home in gardens or such as well? I wouldn't mind buying a cutting or plant here in the park, assuming they would root at my home. I'd be able to save myself a lot of money in herbs if I could grow my own. Heck, I could probably sell some of them too. I would definitely make my money back, then. It's unfortunate that some Pokemon don't like the use of healing items like Energy Roots, but I was sure to bring two Pokemon in that can heal themselves, so my Pokemon's strength shouldn't be much of an issue this expedition." Gaius laughed and thought back on his last trip through the park. "I really wish I would have done that last time. I brought in my Gengar and Crobat, although my Crobat didn't know Roost at the time. I almost ended up having my Pokemon wiped out by the end of my run. I also didn't bring any healing items that time, so I was really in a bind." The trainer then paused for a moment and thought for a moment.

'I wonder what else is there to talk about. I could keep asking about her Pokemon and her life, but this is kind of getting boring. I've already found out a lot about the park, but until I get out of here I might as well try to find out as much as possible about this place. Makina wasn't too helpful last expedition, she just kept getting in the way of everything and leading me on one horrid encounter after another. I'm so glad that my new ranger has actually led me to one of my Pokemon that I'm interested in. Not only that, but I've snagged some rare and valuable pictures that I can sell for money when I get done. This expedition is five-hundred times better than my last one.' Gaius smiled and then spoke up again.

"Were people able to escape with anything before? I never heard about any security incidents before coming here, I guess you guys keep that pretty well under-wraps. Although, I'm surprised if you didn't keep the information hidden, such a news story could be devastating to your parks credibility, and would undoubtedly invite more thievery. Ah, I forgot about the special scanners that were installed as you led me into the zone. I guess I was too excited by the prospect of actually catching one of the Pokemon I was looking for. Yeah, you're right, I didn't think that Pokemon would possibly be injured if they ran into or touched an electrified fence. Perhaps there could be a double layer of fencing, one that Pokemon should be unable to break, and then outside of that there could be an electrified fence to ensure people don't break in. Even with some of the greatest fingerprint technology and fences, you guys would be kind of screwed if someone came in from the air. Granted, you'd probably notice them right away, but I guess in lieu of installing a dome over the top of the whole park, that would just be a risk that you have to take. Besides, a dome would kind of screw up the entire ecosystem if flying Pokemon could only fly so high. You could possibly have some sort of radar or air defense to keep track of any flying Pokemon or objects that are around your airspace. That way if anything unusual or foreign comes too close without permission you could dispatch rangers to check it out.” He suddenly stopped talking and looked towards the ground. A question burned in him from the moment his ranger had begun to tell him about her life and duties as a Pokemon ranger. He slowly looked back up towards the ranger and opened his mouth.

“Do you think I would make a good ranger? I know you probably don’t make a lot of money doing the job, but you certainly seem to have a lot of fun doing it. I could go take all of the tests and learn all about the various Pokemon in the park, I could even research all about plants and habitats and everything else that you probably had to know when you signed up. Honestly it would be nice to be a temporary ranger or something, possibly be a stand-in or substitute in case someone calls in sick. That way I wouldn’t have to take too much time off from my adventure, as I’m pretty sure I could make it here pretty fast from anywhere in the Kanto region. Especially with my newly caught Abra, I could just Teleport here from wherever I happened to be at the time. I could even try to schedule work days in conjunction with my own expeditions, so that I could go explore with someone else the same day as I earn money from guiding someone else through here. Also, you know what they say, the best way to learn about something is to experience it yourself. I would be able to experience all of the various sections that are featured here in the park without having to pay for entry into all of them. That would allow me to have a better idea of where I want to go next, depending upon which Pokemon are found there. Plus I’m sure you guys get some form of bonus for being a ranger. Ten percent off park purchases or something like that, right? I know that’s how most retail stores handle employee discounts. I wouldn’t mind saving money either.” The trainer stopped speaking, out of breath from his long and rushed speech. “I hope that actually makes some sense to you,” Gaius laughed casually, gently smiling at his ranger. “So, what do you think, does that sound like a good idea?”

As Gaius finished speaking, he could see what looked like a young child leaning against a tree near the edge of the valley. ‘I wonder what he’s doing here. I know most people are in pairs if that kid is some Pokemon trainer out on an expedition, but he’s all by himself. He doesn’t seem to be wearing any sort of ranger outfit either, so I doubt he’s with the park. Perhaps my ideas were right and this kid is some kind of Pokemon thief. It would be really ironic if I had to see my ranger put her skills to the test right after I just gave like five different suggestions on how they could make this place safe. Although the kid doesn’t look like much, he could have some strong Pokemon or even a weapon for all we know. I hope my ranger is smart and stays on her ground, who knows who this boy is or what he might be up to.’

Gaius watched his ranger near the young boy. As she moved closer, a large smirk crept across the boy’s face. ‘What is this kid’s deal? Is he some kind of problem child or punk or something? I wonder what he’s up to.’ As the trainer continued to muse, the shape of the young boy slowly changed to that of a small, black Pokemon. Confused, and somewhat surprised, the young man looked at the situation unfolding in front of him.

The Pokemon was covered in grey fur, with red and black patches found along its body. It had triangle ears with a black interior, and a large patch of red fur on its forhead. The Pokemon had red-colored eyebrows, red eyelids, and pale blue eyes. The Pokemon had a small mouth which looked similar to that of a fox. Four short, thin legs were under the Pokemon’s body, and each leg had a paw that was covered in red fur. Behind the Pokemon, Gaius noticed a large bushy tail that was covered in grey fur that was similarly covered to the rest of his body.

“That must be a Zorua. I know they had powerful illusion abilities, but I never expected to find one while it was actually using its special ability. This is probably a rare sight, indeed. I need to pull out my Pokedex to be sure. I would hate to capture something that just seems like a Zorua when it’s actually something else.” The young man quickly pulled out his black-colored Pokedex from his pants pocket and pointed it towards the small, black Pokemon. The mechanical device quickly beeped and soon read the data aloud.

“Zorua, the Tricky Fox Pokémon. Zorua hides its true form by changing its shape into people and Pokémon, and loves to surprise people. Zorua is a Dark-type Pokemon, and is native to the Unova region. Zorua are quite rare, and are almost impossible to find in the wild due to their illusion ability.” A smile crept across Gaius’ face as the Pokedex entry finished.

“Yes, I was right,” Gaius exclaimed. “That is a Zorua, I can’t believe I’ve gotten this lucky in one expedition. I even have two uses left on my Zorua disc so I can try to find more after I catch this one. Well, assuming I catch this one. I don’t think that should be too much trouble, though. I know exactly what strategy to use to take him down. Also, if things start to go sideways, all of my Pokemon are at full health, so I doubt I’ll fail to capture this guy.” The new trainer paused and evaluated his options. “Gengar has Focus Blast, which is strong against Dark-type Pokemon, however all of Zorua’s attacks would be strong against Gengar since he’s a Ghost-type. I probably should have brought a fighting type Pokemon along like my Poliwrath, but I guess I’ll have to go with what I have. Bug-type or Fairy-type Pokemon or moves would also definitely help me here, but I don’t have any of those either. I guess I only have one option right now, and I don’t want to use Dragonite as he’s already battled today.” He then reached down onto his belt and pulled off a black-colored Pokeball.

“You’re the first Pokemon I acquired, so I put my faith in you. Come forth, Pestilence!” Gaius then threw the Pokeball into the air, and watched as white light shone out from the ball. He watched as his purple-colored ghost Pokemon emerged from the Pokeball. “I know you’re at a type-disadvantage here, but when have we ever let something like that stop us! Move in close and use Focus Blast on the wild Zorua. If the attack hits, it should do a lot of damage.” Gaius then waited for his Pokemon to follow his instructions, hoping that all would go according to plan.

    @mlouden03; Gender of Zorua?

    BP#1

For a moment, the trainer was in disbelief.

In fact, just to be absolutely sure that what we had just encountered was indeed a Zorua, he pulled out his Pokedex to do a quick scan of the creature. Once he was certain and satisfied, he began to mumble to himself as he considered his options. I didn't bother interrupting the guy as he spoke mostly to himself, deciding I'd answer his other questions later - besides, I needed a bit of time to think about my answers, too, especially for his last question about potentially becoming a ranger; I had never been particularly exceptional at judging people and their capabilities, especially if I hadn't known them long enough.

I was honestly rather surprised when Gaius called forth his Gengar to battle the Dark-type, but he seemed pretty confident and sure of his choice so I kept my thoughts to myself - perhaps he had a plan; after all, the Gas Pokemon were able to learn quite a number of different moves, so the trainer and his partner must have a couple of tricks up their sleeve for this match.

And so the bout began with a simple command: Focus Blast. Pestilence brought his hands in front of him, palms facing each other, and there a shaky sphere of red began to form. As Fighting-type energy pulsed into the orb, it grew larger and larger, stronger and stronger, but the aura was hard to control - that's what made this attack so inaccurate that even some of the more skilled Pokemon out there still had problems aiming it. The Ghost-Poison-type finally released the ball, swinging it towards the foe to spiral around the Zorua in a rather eccentric manner. Its path was a winding, twisting one as it soared through the air, showing just how shaky the technique was, and the wild entity decided to take advantage of this drawback to increase its chances at dodging the assault completely.

The Dark-type began to dash back and forth as swiftly as he could, bounding to one side and then to the other, as if playing tag with the brownish-red orb that continued to circle it, attempting to draw closer and actually find its mark, the Gengar controlling it with all the mental prowess he had. The fox seemed to be playing with the shadows in a way, but really, I figured it was just trying to distract Pestilence - it was nothing more than being an annoying, sly little thing, trying to get its opponent's guard down or waste his energy and patience. Gaius's Pokemon seemed to be more than happy to play along, though, probably due to its naturally jolly nature, so it appeared the Zorua's little scheme wasn't affecting him as much as it would have liked.

By the time the Tricky Fox Pokemon had gotten tired of zipping back and forth, it made one giant leap towards the ghost, ramming into it with a force of dark energy just as the sphere had finally managed to catch up with it. As a pulse of ominous blackness slammed into the Gas Pokemon, the shaky ball collided with its target as well, sliding right past its side and exploding in a burst of energy. Both creatures were thrown back from the force of the impact, flung to the ground with the wind knocked right out of them.

Simply bursting with vigor and full of sly little schemes, the fox jumped to its feet and initiated another assault, not bothering to waste a second of its time. He quickly gathered dark energy into his forepaws before stomping them against the ground with as much force as he could muster. From the collision came an outbreak of churning maroon energy in the form of flared shockwaves, a desolate mix of black and red, rushing towards the Gengar at an alarming rate. The trainer would have to think fast if he wanted to save his partner from this surge of stormy, dreary darkness.

Gaius looked tentatively as the battle unfolded. He had just commanded his Gengar to use Focus Blast, and he hoped that the move hit the wild Zorua with as much force as possible. 'With an attack that strong, and considering Zorua's weakness, it was definately the best choice for me to make. Even though it doesn't always hit, I have no doubt that even a partial blast would severely cripple the wild Pokemon. If the attack doesn't hit at all, I do always have other moves at my disposal with better hit ratios.'

The trainer continued to watch as his Pokemon formed a small, shaking red orb appeared between his hands. The Pokemon fired the red ball at Zorua, but the wild Pokemon seemed intent on trying to dodge the attack. 'Come on, just hit Zorua already,' the trainer thought, as he began to feel anxious. 'I don't like how this attack is getting drawn out. The longer Pestilence has to manipulate the Focus Blast, the harder it will be to control it.' Gaius then looked in shock as he saw the wild Pokemon lunge towards the trainer's Gengar. The Pokemon seemed to be imbued with dark energy, and it hit Gengar directly. "Oh, no," Gaius yelled aloud, "I hope whatever that attack was didn't damage my Gengar too heavily." Gengar's focus blast then collided with Zorua, causing both of them to fly back damaged by the close proximity of the attack. 'Wow, I guess Gengar wasn't a good idea, after all.'

'What should I do,' Gaius thought. 'I may have made a major erorr in judgement when I chose to sent out my Ghost-type Gengar to face off against a Dark-type. I know that Dark is strong against Ghost, but I figured that with Pestilence's varied movepool he should be an even match. I didn't expect the first attack from a wild, basic level Pokemon to be that strong.' The trainer sighed and quickly tried to come up with a new strategy. 'Damn it, if only I had thought of teaching my Gengar a Fairy-type move before I came here. Since Fairy-type was only recently discovered, there's not much people know about it. But, I do know that Fairy-type Pokemon, and Fairy-type moves, are strong against Dark-type Pokemon. Gengar can't learn any Bug-type moves, but I'm sure that he could learn a Fairy-type attack.' The trainer looked down at the ground, feeling frustrated. 'There's no need to dwell on that now. I just have to come up with a quick strategy to turn this all around. Since Ghost-type moves are not very effective against Dark-type Pokemon, I'm not sure what other basic strengths Gengar really has. All moves except Focus Blast deal neutral damage at best, so I don't think there's an easy way to victory.' Gaius paused, and then his eyes lit up as something dawned on him. 'Gengar's also a Poison-type Pokemon. I can use Poison-type attacks to deal neutral damage, but I'll also get an attack boost since Gengar is a Poison-type Pokemon as well. That's probably the best option I have.'

As the trainer looked up, he could see that Zorua was charging towards his Gengar. 'Oh, no, I spent too long thinking up a strategy. I need to act now.' Gaius quickly yelled commands to his Pokemon. "Pestilence, use Protect to shield yourself from whatever that Zorua is planning. Then, follow up with a Sludge Wave attack." He then paused, trying to think of another counter-attack. "After you've covered him in sludge, attack him with Icy Wind. The attack should lower his speed, making him much easier to deal with." Gaius smiled at looked at his Gengar. "Don't worry, you've got this in the bag. Just stay focused and try to make sure your attacks hit. Think of it like a game of Whack-a-Diglett, but this time, Zorua is the target!" The trainer then looked on as his Pokemon responded to his commands.

OOC: Just wondering, how did Focus Blast hurt Gengar? He's a ghost-type, so wouldn't it not have affected him?

@mlouden03; Focus Blast didn't hurt Gengar; Feint Attack did. Probably should've made it more clear that both of them were thrown back from the impact of the other's attacks - sorry, my bad. ^_^

    BP#2

Of course, when facing any tough and panic-inducing situation, the first solution that would come to most trainers' minds would be Protect or Detect, if their Pokemon knew how to use that technique. This time was no exception with Gaius impulsively calling to his Gengar to use Protect, not even really bothering to figure out just what move the foe was using. I shrugged; well, if it worked, then it worked - no need for more fancy shenanigans, right?

A semi-transparent glass wall materialized in front of Pestilence right at the last fraction of a second before the Night Daze assault would have hit, effectively shielding the ghost from what would have been a very devastating and damaging attack. The surge of dark energy smacked against the barrier and dispersed upon contact, parting like a wave, splashes scattering in every direction and gradually weakening in power. Pretty soon, the blackness had dissipated into thin air completely, and with that, the protective screen began to fade away as well.

With the threat eliminated for the time being, the Gengar was then enveloped in a purple bubble of energy as he began executing the next part of the plan. The flowing orb that surrounded him was a dark murky shade, waves of toxin rippling across the surface, which he launched at the wild entity like a tsunami, a gigantic surge of liquid that was difficult to evade. It crashed down on the fox almost slowly, torturously, as if there was some sort of heaviness to the mixture, like goo, as it cascaded downwards. The dense liquid dowsed him in poison as the wave smacked against him before receding, the ooze filling the battlefield, rolling across the valley's barren land like some kind of river separating the two fighters.

The Zorua took a few steps back as the mixture lapped teasingly at his feet, moving like the tide, rushing forwards only to fall back again. The intoxicated river would probably have little-to-no effect on Pestilence, though; after all, he was part Poison-type, and the toxin wasn't going to do anything to him. Plus, he was a levitating ghost, so the slow-moving currents weren't going to impend his speed or motion.

As if the dense sludge wasn't enough to slow the opponent down, the Gas Pokemon exhaled sharply to release a powerful blast of cold air. He blew an icy gust of wind from his mouth, and I could feel the drop in temperature immediately; the breezes were chilling, and I was sure the Dark-type's muscles were starting to become rather numb from the sudden cold.

The Tricky Fox Pokemon had a technique to counter the iciness running rampant in the atmosphere. What better way than by fire? He breathed deeply, multiple wisps of flame sizzling out of his mouth, traveling in a wide, conic shape. I felt the temperature begin to rise back to normal once again, the warmth from the inferno melting the snow and ice in the frosty air. The barrage of blazes latched onto the Gengar once they had dealt with the bitter cold, the embers running across his ghostly exterior with a scorching touch.

The flames did not stay on the Pokemon for long, though; the fox soon redirected their path downwards, targeting the purple pool of poison instead. The fiery, wide-spread attack had no trouble covering pretty much the whole of the "sludge river" with its heat, burning through the toxic muck and only growing stronger. Soon, the battlefield was not just covered in dangerous poison but deadly heat as well; it had quickly become a sinister combustion ground, numerous embers dancing along the surface of the murky and flammable liquid.

I shot a glance at my Gallade; if things got out of hand - and it certainly seemed like they were close to crossing the line to uncontrolled - we would have to step in, and I needed to make sure he was up for the job. Of course, if Gaius could solve the problem by himself, that was much better - I didn't want to have to issue a warning or get the trainer kicked out or something similar.

With this burning pool between the two Pokemon, neither would have an easy time landing an assault - all the more if it would be a physical attack, but even the long-ranged techniques would be much more challenging to aim and direct in this situation.

OOC: Didn't see that coming xD I hope this clean up idea is good enough lol

    IC:

Gaius smiled as he saw his Pokemon protect against the wild Zorua's attack. "Yes, good job Gengar. You were able to defend yourself against Zorua's attack. The more we protect ourselves, the more we can focus on attacking the opponent.!" He then continued to smile as Gengar performed the next part of his plan, delivering a strong Sludge Wave attack on the wild Pokemon. However, his smiled soon turned into a grimace. 'I never intended for the attack to spread that far, I have to make sure the attacks are contained so I don't mess up the habitat. I know I don't have to worry about it as much in the wild, but I don't want to get thrown out of the park on a technicality or rules violation.' The trainer then looked at his Gengar and yelled. "Pestilence, try to make sure that your attacks stay as confined as possible. The less you spread your attacks out, the less affect it will have on the surroundings, and the more damage it would do to the Zorua since it's condensed. We don't want to have to leave because we messed up the park, ok? I paid alot of money to be able to come here and buy equipment, and I don't want anything to get in my way of catching the best Pokemon that I can find.' Gaius lowered his head at towards the ground and shook his head in disgust. 'I wish I had known that the attack could go so wrong.''

When the trainer looked up, he could see his Gengar delivering the final move of Gaius' strategy, a chilling Icy Wind. 'Good, good. The Icy Wind will slow Zorua down, making it alot easier for us to attack him head on. I wonder what move we should use next...' The trainer's thought process was interrupted when he saw flames begin to flow from the wild Pokemon's mouth. 'Wow, whatever that is, it can't be good.' The Pokemon then aimed the flames at Gengar, causing the Ghost-type to take moderate damage from the attack. 'At least the attack didn't seem to do much damage, I can always be grateful for that.' What the wild Pokemon did next made Gaius shudder.

Zorua then aimed the flames directly towards the sludge river that Gengar had made with his sludge wave attack. As the temperature began to increase, Gaius' heart began to beat faster and faster. 'Oh god, that is probably the worst possible scenario that could have happened. With the flames interacting with the toxic sludge, the fire could so some serious damage to the environment, and could even pose a danger to myself and my ranger if we breathe in the fumes. I need to think of a way to contain the situation quickly. Come on, Gaius, think. What attacks does Gengar have that can put out a fire.' His mind quickly raced through Gengar's repertoire and could not think of a single attack. 'Ok, if Gengar can't fix the situation, I have two other Pokemon that may be able to help solve this problem. Unfortunately Crobat is a Poison-type and Flying-type Pokemon, so I think he could only make the situation worse. That only leaves me with Dragonite. Most of Dragonite's moves are pure offense, but I think I know a move that will help me put out the fire.'

Gaius reached down and pulled off Dragonite's Pokeball. He then also held Genar's in his left hand and called to the Pokemon. "Gengar, you've done enough for right now, time to return to your Pokeball. I need to send someone else out to try and help fix the mess that you and Zorua made together. I know it wasn't all your fault, but try to condense your attacks better next time like I warned you about, ok?" The trainer then pressed the button on Gengar's Pokeball and watched as the ghost-type Pokemon got sucked inside. He then attacked Gengar's Pokeball to his belt and thew Dragonite's Pokeball into the air.

"Dragonite, come forth. You are needed in battle!" Gaius shouted, and then watched as the large orange Pokemon appeared in a flash of white, and noticed its bright scales glistening against the light of the fire. The Pokemon looked slightly perplexed by the sights in front of him, so the trainer quickly stepped in to explain. "Gengar used Sludge Wave, and then that Zorua over there decided to light it on fire. I need you to use Aqua Tail to try and put the fire out. As soon as that's done, use Extremespeed to hit that wild Pokemon hard. If you need to use more than one Aqua Tail, worry about attacking Zorua later. Try to use soft wing beats to blow away some of the Toxic fumes away from us as well. The air could become dangerous to breathe if we let it go on for too long."

'I really hope this plan works,' Gaius thought as he watched his Dragonite ready his trainer's commands. 'I don't know what other options I had, and I would hate to have all of this time ruined because of a silly mistake that I made when choosing my attacks. If I do get thrown out of here, I'll never be able to live the experience down. I'll probably be the laughing stock of my hometown of Pendragon for the rest of my Pokemon trainer career.' The trainer then looked towards his ranger, hoping that she could provide some sense of support for his plan. "I didn't think that Zorua could learn a Fire-type move like that. I hope that my efforts to clean up the area are to your satisfaction." He tried to smile at her, but his smile only came off as half-hearted due to the pressure he felt. Gaius then looked back towards his Pokemon, and waited to see how the situation played out.

As the flames danced in front of his eyes, Gaius soon realized that Pestilence was not the Pokemon for the job. There seemed to be nothing the Gengar could do to get rid of the burning poison pool coating the battlefield, and so the trainer returned the ghost to his Pokeball, calling upon his Dragonite to assist him in the Gas Pokemon's stead.

The dragon emerged and was quickly informed of the situation, though I don't think it would've taken a genius to assess that the fiery river had to be taken out of the picture immediately. The trainer's tactic was simple but effective - it wasn't exactly the quickest or easiest method, but it got the job done, and at the end of the day, that was the important part.

He wrapped his tail in water energy. Glowing a brilliant light blue shade, it was as if a slick sheen had enveloped it, trapping the liquid in its place around the tail, if only for a moment. The Dragonite swung at the raging fire, batting at the blazes and dowsing them in splashes of water with every strike. Even though the Dragon Pokemon was an incredibly strong physical attacker, and water was any spark of ember's most feared adversary, it still took quite a while for the Aqua Tail technique to extinguish the fire completely - probably because the inferno had been given the chance to fan their flames higher and stronger, like a wildfire setting a whole forest ablaze, and it was a gruelling task to try to pacify something so full of fiery spirit, so full of blazing glory, so tall and proud and regal and defiant.

I was glad the trainer had told his partner to focus on the embers and not the fox; it was good to know he had prioritized saving te valley over weakening the Pokemon - after all, destroyed Park property had some pretty large consequences, for both the trainer and the creatures inhabiting the area. It saved us all the trouble of having to deal with some dire catastrophe later on.

Unfortunately, this also meant the Zorua was given the opportunity to simply attack without having to worry about an immediate retaliation or counter to his assault. He didn't waste another moment, leaping into action and releasing waves of Dark-type energy from within him. An aura of darkness emanated from him, giving him an eerie, shadowy hue; a stygian river pulsed through the already-smoky atmosphere, turning it into a murky sea of black, then crashed right into the unassuming Dragonite, startling him and knocking him back a couple spaces.

The Dragon responded with an indignant growl, anticipating his next move as he struck down the last few flames in the sludge-filled pool, ridding the battleground of the fiery threat once and for all. Satisfied with his work (not even a single spark of ember had lived an what was left of the purple river were just tinier pools, little blobs, of no-longer-very-harmful-or-threatening muck that could easily be taken care of after the battle) and ready to finish what Pestilence had started, the Dragon-Flying-type charged forwards at a high velocity, pulling his whole body mass with him as he rocketed towards the Tricky Fox Pokemon.

The Zorua raised his forepaws just moments before his larger opponent crashed into him. As they collided with each other and he tumbled backwards, he began hacking away furiously at whatever he could reach, lashing out rather blindly at the dragon's tough exterior in front of him. His assault barely left a dent in his foe, but it had dealt some damage at the very least, and had forced the Dragon Pokemon off of him.

Gaius's partner retreated quickly to avoid the rest of the Dark-type's pesky swipes, his skin dotted with little red scratch marks all over. The tiny wounds weren't anything to be overly worried about, as long as they stayed small and uninfected. The Dragonite was probably feeling a bit of discomfort from all the open slits, the same way paper cuts irritatingly stung for the first few moments, but he was still bursting with energy and good to fight for now.

    ROLEPLAY COMPLETED.

Run ended due to mlouden's restart. It's pretty much also void anyway; no claims or whatever else.
