"Hey, John, you have a new run."

Jenny, the receptionist at the Registration Office, buzzed in though my wireless.

"Alright, stream me the info as usual," I responded, taking out my PokeDex. I watched as the Trainer Card of a Mike Hawkburns was streamed into my PokeDex.

"The run will be at Mount Deckbi. I'll see you later, then." Jenny said before I heard the click of her microphone disconnecting from mine.

I looked to my Scizor. "We're going to Mount Deckbi." He winced as I expected he would - he was not fond of Fire-type Pokemon. I smiled gently and bumped him on the shoulder. "If it's any consolation, it looks like our Trainer had a Scizor of his own. She's female, too. Maybe you two will hit it off or something!"

My Scizor immediately averted his eyes awkwardly, and I laughed. "The Ranger Outpost isn't far from here, let's get going."

Within minutes, we were sitting at the Ranger Outpost. It was just a small wooden shack without much more than a few chairs and an emergency first aid kit. This was a common meeting place for Rangers and Trainers. I watched with a bored look as my Scizor inspected his claws, seemingly looking for any dirt or grime. My Trainer should be here very soon...

“Ugh.. Where the hell is it..?” I pull up my map and stare at it.

“It should be right… Oh.. Wow. It’s right there.” I looked around to find a small little shack of some sort. As I walked towards the shack, I went through my bag pack, pulling out my Poke player. “I better do this now before I forget,” as I pull out a disc and load it into the player.

“Man I really hope this stupid thing comes in handy; can’t believe I had to pay $11000 for this thing.” I place the player back in my bag and pull out one of my Poke balls.

“Go Weavile.” The Pokémon pops out of the little red and white ball and begins looking around at the large open field and the far away mountains, and then stares at me with a confused expression.
“Don’t worry, Weavile, we’re going to catch some fire Pokémon!” I told him as he stared back at me with a smirk.

“You like the challenge, don’t you?” I smiled at him. He began to jump around, punching and kicking the air. Weavile was ready for a fight.

As I edged towards the small shack, I grew nervous. “What if I didn’t get the Pokémon I wanted? What if my ranger doesn’t help me! Oh well, let’s see how this goes…,” I opened the door to the outpost and there was a man standing there. I walked towards him and shook his hand.

A man walked through the door. I instantly recognized him as my trainer, Mike Hawkburns. I immediately got up and shook his hand.

"Hey, Mike. My name's John Shay, and I'm going to be your Ranger for this run. This here is my Scizor." As I mentioned his name, my Scizor fluttered his wings in pride. I noticed a Weavile by the man's side. Judging from self-confident appearance, I figured this Pokemon was both experienced and strong.

"Well, let's not hang around too long," I began. Then, I heard a faint noised. I paused for a moment, listening in. It was coming from Mike's backpack! I recognized it as a Litwick call, being replayed over and over again. I figured he must've already activated his Litwick Voice Disk, then. I wondered if it would work for him.

"A Litwick Voice Disk... Well, I do hope you find one." I smiled at him. "Anyways, we'll be heading straight for the volcano. It's dormant, so there isn't much to worry about. We'll probably just go straight up and make as much progress as possible. I'm sure someone with Pokemon as powerful as yours is probably interested in finding more powerful Pokemon, and the higher up we travel, the more of those Pokemon we'll find."

I motioned for him to follow me, and I led him out of the Outpost. We began walking down the path towards the volcano, and I kept an eye out for Pokemon hiding in the bushes along the path. The Litwick call was played repetitively, and I made sure to look for any blemish of ghostly purple that could be the rare candle Pokemon.

I heard the bushes to my right shake, and I immediately halted. I looked at Mike, and pointed at the bush that had shaken. Was it a Litwick?

A chubby orange pig jumped out and growled excitedly.

    "Pignite!" he roared loudly.

This Pokemon... wasn't a Litwick. If I recalled correctly, it was the second evolution of a common Fire-type Pokemon, Tepig. I doubted Mike would be interested in this Pokemon, but I had to ask anyways.

"Do you want to try capturing this Pokemon, or do you just want to try and run?" I asked.

OOC: Also, if you do run and it is successful (or whenever this encounter ends), you have to activate the player again.

I stared at the red pig Pokémon and then glanced over at Weavile. He stared back at me and we both began to laugh loudly.

“Remember when you had to fight one of these things, Weavile? Oh good times,” I said to the Weavile and he began to laugh even harder.

I went back to staring at the Pignite, this time seriously contemplating whether I should fight it, or just leave it be.

“Hey John, as much as I would love to fight this thing, I’m here for a reason. So let’s keep on moving,” I told the ranger.

Mike looked at his Weavile and shared a laugh with him.

"Remember when you had to fight one of these things, Weavile? Oh good times," Mike said, before turning more serious. He seemed to think about it for a moment, and then turned to me. "Hey John, as much as I would love to fight this thing, I’m here for a reason, so let’s keep on moving."

I nodded, and led Mike away from the Pignite. We skirted to the side of the road, and I watched Pignite to see if it would attack. It seemed disappointed to see us leave, but was respectful enough to allow us to pass. It turned on us, and leaped back into the bushes.

I relaxed, and we continued walking along the path. I noticed Mike turn on the Pokeplayer again, and the Litwick cries began playing again.

Our next encounter appeared very quickly. I heard a faint vacuum-like noise behind us, and I turned to see a Heatmor crossing the path behind us. From the looks of things, the Heatmor was sniffing the ground with its snout, probably looking for food. The Heatmor caught me looking, and returned my gaze with an angry look.

"Want to battle this Heatmor?" I asked my Trainer.

I pulled out my pokedex and looked up the information on this "Heatmor" Pokémon. It wasn't anything special and had no real use for me. I was annoyed.

"Another useless Pokémon? Really?" I told the ranger. It was obviously not my day. Again, I stared at the Weavile, who was also looking somewhat annoyed.

"Don't worry, buddy. You'll get a chance to battle soon," I said while patting him on the shoulder.

"Hey, John, I know this is going to be a bit silly, but I think I'd rather avoid battling this Pokémon too. I kind of just want to find the Litwick and get out of here. Plus, I don't like the way that Heatmor is looking at us. I don't want to risk getting my Pokémon injured too early," I said.

"Another useless Pokémon? Really?" Mike said, half to himself. He was clearly disappointed, and from the looks of things, so was his Weavile. Patting his Pokemon on the shoulder, Mike said, "Don't worry, buddy. You'll get a chance to battle soon."

Turning to me, Mike said, "Hey, John, I know this is going to be a bit silly, but I think I'd rather avoid battling this Pokémon too. I kind of just want to find the Litwick and get out of here. Plus, I don't like the way that Heatmor is looking at us. I don't want to risk getting my Pokémon injured too early."

I nodded. It was fully logical, and I understood. I told Mike to follow me, and we began cautiously backing up. I watched to see if Heatmor, like Pignite, would let us leave.

"Heatmor!" the Pokemon bellowed, spewing embers from its snout. It turned its body to face us and began advancing as we backpedaled, matching us step for step.

I stopped. It was clear to me that Hatmor wasn't just going to let us go. I turned to Mike.

"You're going to have to battle this Heatmor, from the looks of things... Unless you want to purchase a Pokedoll from me for $500."

“Really? More money? Damn, this shit’s expensive isn’t it?” Mike sighed.

“Well, seeing as there’s not much else I can do. I guess I’ll pitch in,” He said while pulling out his wallet.

“So, it’s 500 dollars? Here you go,” Mike said handing the ranger the money for the exchange of a pokedoll.

“Now let’s please get out of here. This Pokémon is starting to scare Weavile,” Mike continued as he stared at Weavile’s frightened expression

“It’s going to be okay, I know it’s taking longer than expected.. But you’ll get your chance,” the trainer reassured his Pokémon.

"Really? More money? Damn, this shit’s expensive isn’t it?" Mike sighed. I smiled, finding his exasperation amusing. "Well, seeing as there’s not much else I can do. I guess I’ll pitch in."

Mike pulled out his wallet and counted the bills. "So, it’s 500 dollars? Here you go. Now, let's please get out of here. This Pokemon is starting to scare Weavile."

I looked at Weavile, and indeed, he did seem a little perturbed by Heatmor. It was only natural, though, as Weavile was an Ice-type while Heatmor was a Fire-type.

I rummaged through my bag and pulled out a Pokedoll. I lightly tossed it at Heatmor, and the Pokemon immediately rushed towards the toy. I smiled. That was the magnetic power of the Pokedoll, then - no Pokemon could resist it.

"Let's go," I said to Mike.

We continued down the path. Once again, I saw Mike fiddle with the Pokeplayer. Litwick cries began playing again, and I looked around. I really hoped he would find one. The Voice Disks were expensive, and had a low chance of working. It would heartbreaking if it didn't work.

As I cast my eyes around the trees near us, I noticed something near one. It was... a faint purple glow. I gasped - was the what Mike was seeking?

Yes, it was! The rare Litwick poked its head out from behind the tree and glided toward us cautiously. It was heading for Mike, the source of the Litwick cries that this one must be tracking down.

"Well, lucky you," I remarked to Mike with a smile on my face. "I'll presume you'll want to battle?"

"Well, lucky you," I remarked to Mike with a smile on my face. "I'll presume you'll want to battle?"

“Hell yeah, I want to battle!” Mike replied excitedly as he stared at the candle Pokémon. His patience had finally paid off. He was going to get a chance at capturing the Pokémon. He bent down and whispered to Weavile.

“You ready for this, Weavile? You think you can take it?” he asked his Pokémon. “He has the type advantage on you, but we have the training! But if you think you can’t handle it, I can always send Scizor in,”

Weavile became fierce; he flew up in the air and landed right between the Litwick and Mike. He was ready to go.

“I like the enthusiasm, Weavile! Let’s see what it’s got! You remember the strategies we learned?” Mike asked his Pokémon. Weavile nodded and began performing a sort of routined dance. He was using Swords Dance!

    BP-1: Weavile VS Litwick

    Ranger John Webster Shay

OOC: @LS the Door Mat Litwick's gender?

    Unsurprisingly, Mike was ecstatic.

"Hell yeah, I want to battle!" he said excitedly. He bent down and whispered something quickly to his Weavile - probably words of motivation. Whatever was said, it seemed to give Weavile newfound confidence. Weavile hopped into the battlefield, facing Litwick with an edge in his eyes.

This should be an interesting battle, I remarked silently to myself. Weavile was at a type disadvantage being an Ice-type weak against a Fire-type like Litwick. However, at the same time, Weavile was a Dark-type strong to Litwick's Ghost. This battle could very possibly be a back and forth one.

Weavile kicked things off, immediately launching into a dance. I recognized this as Swords Dance, an attack that boosted the user's attack by two stages. It was a good attack to lead off the battle with, especially if Mike planned to make this a physical battle.

"Litwick," the Ghost-type murmured in a ghostly whisper, not showing any worry despite its opponent's boosting move. Litwick opened its mouth, and a ball of ghosty purple energy grew in front of Litwick's mouth. This was Shadow Ball!

Litwick fired the Shadow Ball at Weavile. I watched it fly at Mike's Pokemon, and wondered how the first-time Park-goer would react.

OOC: Make dat candle a male

My adrenaline was pumping. The thrill of being in a Pokémon battle was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I thought I was in a pretty good position, even though Litwick has the fire type advantage on the Weavile. Weavile was faster, stronger, and smarter than the Litwick. And it helps that he has already evolved and Litwick is just a basic Pokémon.

After Mike commanded Weavile to use swords dance, the dark Pokémon began performing his little dance, he was jumping and moving his arms and you could see the Weavile getting stronger. Even the Litwick was looking at the Weavile in fear. The Weavile was very powerful at this point, there is very little that poor little candle Pokémon can use to counter Weavile.

The Litwick gave a scream, and began charging a dark ball of energy. I looked at John who had a look of excitement and anticipation at the wild pokemons next attack and then finally, as soon as Weavile completed his dance, the Litwick fired off the Shadowball.

I had a split second to react, the ball was hurdling towards the Weavile quickly and I had to give my Pokémon a command. I wanted to avoid his Weavile getting injured this early in the battle, and at the same time wanted to show that candle whose boss.
I had to decide on my next move.

“Weavile, try to dodge that attack and use Ice punch!” I roared at the Weavile, who obliged.

    BP-2: Weavile VS Litwick

    Ranger John Webster Shay

OOC: @LS the Door Mat Sorry for shortish post, jet lag is killing me....

"Weavile, try to dodge that attack and used Ice Punch!" Mike commanded.

Weavile nodded, and with the Shadow Ball flying at him, he rolled to his right to avoid the attack. Mike's Pokemon was able to avoid this Shadow Ball this time around, and I figured his Speed must've come in handy here. At such an early stage in the battle, though, it was hardly surprising that Weavile was able to dodge an attack.

Weavile snarled at Litwick, and shards of ice sprouted from his right fist. He leaped towards Litwick with his claw outstretched and flying right towards the candlestick's panicked face.

"Litwick!" he cried, but failed to dodge in time. Weavile's punch hit the Pokemon square in the face, and he fell back. The weasel flashed a wicked smile. Landing the first blow was always a good feeling in any battle. Ice Punch was an Ice-type attack that was not very effective against Litwick, but the Attack boosts from Swords Dance helped balance things out a little.

Litwick quickly recovered, showing his grit. This Pokemon seemed like a tough fighter. Realizing Weavile was still very close to him after landing the Ice Punch earlier, he saw an opportunity to strike. A blue film of energy covered Litwick's body, and quickly exploded in all directions. The energy blast struck Weavile, and he winced before backing away from Litwick.

I recognized this attack. It was the popular Hidden Power attack, and judging from the hue of the energy, it was Water-type. It was a little ironic that a Fire-type like Litwick would have a Water-type Hidden Power, but it made little difference to Weavile. I doubt he had taken too much damage from an attack like that.

    Battle Statistics

Weavile’s Ice punch had made contact. The Litwick got struck and moved back, but then it began emitting some strange energy and it struck Weavile. Weavile took the hit and simply shrugged it off. He was a tough fighter.

“What was that move?” I asked John, and he replied by saying that it was a Hidden Power move.
I stared at the Litwick with an impressed look but decided to go back to the battle.

“Alright Weavile, we know his tricks now. Every time you land an attack, be sure to back away as fast as possible. Don’t give it a reason to attack you,” I said. Weavile nodded showing that he understood and awaited his next move.
“Now Weavile, Let’s provoke this little candle, use taunt on it! But don’t forget what I just reminded you!” I yelled.
I noticed that John was giving me a stare so I looked towards him and smiled.

“Yeah, that’s how we play,” I said as the Weavile began provoking and teasing the little candle Pokémon.

The Litwick had a deep look of anger, as cute of a Pokémon as it was. It seemed furious.

Mike seemed more impressed by Litwick's attack than anyting else.

"What attack was that?" he asked me. I responded by telling him it was Hidden Power, and he nodded.

"Alright Weavile, we know his tricks now. Every time you land an attack, be sure to back away as fast as possible. Don’t give it a reason to attack you," Mike said, taking a positive view of being attacked (which probably wasn't too difficult, given how weak the attack was).

Weavile nodded, but I wondered how this would work in reality. It may be tiring to have to back off from Litwick after every hit, and Litwick was in a position to capitalize if Weavile ever slipped up. Still, it could work most of the time, and that was surely a good thing. It wasn't realistic for Weavile to dodge every single attack, anyways.

"Now Weavile, let’s provoke this little candle, use Taunt on it! But don’t forget what I just reminded you!" Mike called. Weavile nodded, and his mouth curled upwards into a nasty grin. It looked like he was going to enjoy this type of an attack.

Weavile began hopping around Litwick, hopping in and out of his range rapidly. He had his eyes locked on Litwick, and there was a cruel sense of humor in them. Litwick quickly became fed up; he was now Taunted.

Mike caught my eye. "Yeah, that’s how we play," he said, laughing a little.

However, Litwick wasn't going to just let Weavile make a fool of him. Already Taunted and furious, Litwick quickly made to act on the dancing Weavile. Weavile noticed this, and began to back away as Mike said. However, Litwick noticed him backing away, and tried something different.

A cloak of fire surrounded Litwick, and he rocketed into Weavile. Weavile tried to sidestep the attack, but Litwick still nicked him in the side. I could tell it wasn't nearly as bad as taking an attack right into the chest, but Litwick's Flame Charge still looked like it had done some damage, which was better than none. Also, judging from the flame on Litwick's head, which was flickering around at a much quicker rate, the Speed boost from Flame Charge had taken effect.

By Taunting Litwick, Mike may have made his opponent a more dangerous one. Litwick was certainly handicapped from using moves like Substitute or Confuse Ray, which would definitely help, but that meant he would be using more damaging attacks. Mike may have to be a little careful in this situation.

As Weavile continued to taunt the opponent, I looked at the Litwick and it looked PISSED.
“Maybe now, this battle can get more interested,” I said to myself.

Litwick looked like it was about to explode, I’ve never seen a Pokémon look so angry before. The Litwick seemed to be charging some other kind of move, and before I could mumble anything out, Weavile began backing away. The Litwick seemed like it was expecting it and began using a different move.
Fire surrounded Litwicks body and he began dashing towards Weavile, it happened so fast, I thought Weavile could not react in time but as the smoke cleared out I could see that the Weavile took a hit to the side and with that, the candle Pokémon simply looked faster.

“Wow that was a close one. You alright Weavile?” I asked, he nodded in response and I noticed a small burn mark on his side. This battle needs to end soon.

“Weavile, we’re done being nice! Go for a Night Slash and make it count!” I yelled at my Weavile. The Weavile jumped up and began sprinting towards the Litwick. Even though it had a speed boost, Weavile was still faster.

"Wow, that was a close one," Mike remarked. "You alright, Weavile?"

Weavile nodded, but he was still clearly a little shaken up. Mike took on a more serious expression, and from the looks of things, he was ready to get on the offensive.

"Weavile, we’re done being nice! Go for a Night Slash and make it count!" Mike called. Weavile nodded, and his claw was immediately enveloped by dark energy. He began dashing at Litwick with his claw outstretched and ready to strike. I recalled he had two Attack boosts, meaning this blow could deal quite a bit of damage.

Litwick tried avoiding the attack - from the look on his face, he must've known he couldn't afford to take this hit. However, even with his Speed boost, the Pokemon couldn't outspeed Weavile. Weavile landed a solid hit on Litwick's side, and the feisty Ghost-type fell backwards.

    "Litwick!" he cried.

Weavile backed off, keeping his Trainer's warning in mind. However, it looked like Litwick was too hurt to retaliate this time around. We waited a few moments, and Litwick slowly returned to a base. He looked very shaken up, though he should be very grateful that he was only struck on the side and not somewhere where the hit may even have knocked him out. I suppose Mike should've been grateful for that too, but then again, it was Weavile's decision where to strike and he would know much better than to knock Litwick out.

Litwick exhaled, then made his move. At first, I didn't notice what he was doing. However, I realized he was shrinking! Litwick was using Minimize! It was smart, as this move increased his Evasion and made him much harder to hit. Against a hard hitter like Weavile, this was an intelligent move to make.

I looked at John in confusion. The Litwick began minimizing itself. It became so small that you can barely see it.

“Isn’t Taunt supposed to stop those kinds of moves from happening?” I asked John.

“It doesn’t matter,” I said to myself. This was just a minor setback. Weavile has the eyes of a hawk, he can hit a Pokémon, no matter the size.

“Weavile, you can basically just stomp on it now! And we have a move that is guaranteed to hit every time!” I told the Weavile. He nodded in return and knew what I was about to say.

“This Litwick is pretty smart, but so am I… Weavile use feint attack!” I yelled. This was a great move simply for the fact that it cannot miss. The Weavile began to focus his mind, and then he disappeared. He was nowhere to be seen on the battlefield. The Litwick was looking around for the Weavile. He had a look of anger and anxiety. There were a few silent seconds until the Weavile reappeared right infront of the Litwick and struck it.

OOC: @LS the Door Mat Oh fuck sorry I totally forgot about Taunt. q_q

Mike laughed. "Weavile, you can basically just stomp on it now! And we have a move that is guaranteed to hit every time!"

I raised an eyebrow inquisitively. In spite of this new hurdle, Mike didn't seem to be bothered. I wondered which attack he had in mind. I figured that this should be plenty interesting.

"This Litwick is pretty smart, but so am I… Weavile use Faint Attack!" Mike shouted. Weavile instantly disappeared.

Ah, I understood now. I didn't own a Weavile, so my knowledge of their moveset was limited. However, it made sense that they learned Faint Attack. Faint Attack was, like Mike said, an attack that never missed. It could certainly be blocked, but I found it hard to believe that a Minimized Litwick would be capable of doing that. This was an intelligent move by Mike.

Weavile reappeared behind Litwick. The Pokemon heard Weavile scratch the ground behind it and began to turn, but he had no chance of doing anything before Weavile struck. Weavile swiped Litwick, and he was knocked backwards. A nasty grin poked at Weavile's lips - another successful attack.

Litwick shook it off, and locked eyes with Weavile. He seemed to be upset, as though this battle wasn't going quite the way he had hoped. Well, that seemed pretty obvious in my mind. He was not in a very friendly situation, all things considered.

A large ball of purple energy gathered in front of Litwick's mouth. This was Shadow Ball, a very popular Ghost-type move. I was surprised to see Litwick use it on Weavile, a Dark-type Pokemon who could take Ghost-type attacks without taking too much damage. However, untrained wild Pokemon did sometimes make questionable decisions in battle.

Shadow Ball flew towards Weavile. Weavile had a brief window to do something about it, but it would have to be the right decision, otherwise it could backfire.

The Weavile struck Litwick and knocked the Pokémon backwards, Weavile smirked at the Pokémon, awaiting his move.

The Litwick regained stance and starred at the Weavile with a deep look of hatred.

The Litwick began charging a large dark ball. I knew exactly what was coming; I can guarantee it’s a shadow ball

“It shouldn’t do that much damage,” I said to myself “Let’s just hope Weavile can at least try to dodge it,”
Shadow ball was a ghost type move, those moves are not very effective on dark type Pokémon..

“Weavile, try to get past that Shadow ball using Ice Shard! You can do it!” I yelled at the Pokémon.

“Ice shard had a higher priority, Weavile should be able to dodge it since he’s moving at such a fast speed,” Mike thought to himself.
