    "Ohh, a Gligar..." Shawn muttered underneath his breath, "I sure love me some Gligar."

    I nodded. Gligar was a popular target for Trainers who came to the Deckbi Ranges. Their typing meant they could take any type of attack easily (except Ice) and their ability to Baton Pass the attack-raising effect of Swords Dance and the speed-raising effect of Rock Polish is nothing short of amazing - once, in a Gym battle, I'd managed to have my Gliscor, Himokan, pass these effects to Dual. He had promptly swept the rest of the gym.

    "Hey, uh, let's try to sneak past this little guy. If we can't, let's use one of the Poke-dolls I have. I already have a Gliscor, anyway..." Shawn said quietly to me.

    I nodded. I didn't blame him for moving past the FlyScorpion Pokemon, especially since he already had one. Lots of trainers would have grabbed it for trade bait, but considering Shawn had already captured two Pokemon and his run was not even half-done, moving on was probably the wiser choice. You never know what you'll find here in the National Park.

    As if to emphasise this, as we moved past the Gligar (which didn't seem to take any offense at us doing so) a huge silver-and-pink Pokemon rose majestically out of the chasm. It roared, for no particular reason I could ascertain, and spread its bulky, rectangular-shaped wings before shooting off towards Mt Deckbi. I braced my hand against my brow to fight off the harsh sun rays so I could watch it fly.

    "Hey, it's not every day you run across Palkia," I said to Shawn. "It's a pity you didn't bring a camera; the Archives would have paid you well for a picture. Oh well, let's move on."

    Whew. It was quite the relief that we were able to leave the Gligar unscathed. It sure would have been a hassle to battle it right now.

    All of a sudden, a roared pierced my train of thought, immediately stopping it in its tracks. I look towards the chasm and saw a pink monstrosity slowly rise up.

    Dear God... I thought to myself, awestruck. Please tell me I don't gotta fight that thing...

    I was dumbfounded and almost scared as it flew away. I was standing so still that I didn't have the nerve to make even the slightest twitch. But, I knew that I couldn't let fear get the best of me. After all, I had already been through three tough battles today. There should be no reason to start cowering now.

    "Hey, it's not every day you run across Palkia," James told me. "It's a pity you didn't bring a camera; the Archives would have paid you well for a picture. Oh well, let's move on."

    "Hrm, yeah...I suppose a camera would be a good investment." I looked up towards the sky where Palkia had flown to. "You never do expect these kinds of things to happen, though." I chuckled to James. I had no idea where we were going, but hey, it's always an adventure for me.

    "Oh, yeah. By the way, how do you figure something that big can fly anyhow?" I kicked at the ground. "Especially with that wing-size to body-size ratio. It doesn't make sense; it defies logic."

    "Hrm, yeah...I suppose a camera would be a good investment. You never do expect these kinds of things to happen, though," Shawn replied.

    "Yeah, that's fair enough," I said, "but you should really think about it - it's not uncommon for people to pay able to pay off their entry fees using pictures taken in the Park."

    "Oh, yeah. By the way, how do you figure something that big can fly anyhow?" he asked, kicking at the ground. "Especially with that wing-size to body-size ratio. It doesn't make sense; it defies logic."

    "Yeah, it sure does," I agreed, beginning to lead him on towards the mountain. "That relatively-tiny wingspan and huge heavy body shouldn't be able to achieve lift, but they do. Hell, if you want to talk about logic defiance, go take a look at Dialga. No reason whatsoever that beast should be able to fly, yet it does."

    We continued along the edge of the chasm, which began to taper inwards. We didn't see any Pokemon for a while, but I wasn't surprised - if I was a Sandshrew or Cyndaquil, I'd certainly go running at the sight of a Palkia. I was just about to bring up the option of changing course when I saw a dark gray rock wobbling along. I zoomed in using my visor, but still couldn't tell what it was. Until it turned around. The big red nose made it obvious.

    "There's a Nosepass just up ahead," I said to Shawn, "they're quite rare. Interested in trying to capture it?"

    "Yeah, it sure does," James nodded. He begun our expedition once more towards the mountain. "That relatively-tiny wingspan and huge heavy body shouldn't be able to achieve lift, but they do. Hell, if you want to talk about logic defiance, go take a look at Dialga. No reason whatsoever that beast should be able to fly, yet it does."

    I also nodded in agreement. "Crazy world we live in, eh? Hahaha," I laughed at the thought of the quadruped steel dragon floating in the heavens above.

    We walked for a quite a while along the edge of the chasm. We didn't really notice many Pokemon. I could have sworn I saw a Geodude, but those damn things always look like rocks. Maybe it was the heat getting to me.

    We didn't wait very far after that until James stopped. I looked in the direction he was facing, trying to make out what he noticed. I could barely see the hobbling shape of a blue rock. At first, I assumed it was a differently color Geodude, hell, maybe a Graveler or Gigalith, but as we walked a tad bit closer I could tell otherwise. James held up a Ranger Visor to his eyes, also trying to make out what it was. I sure wanted one of those.

    "There's a Nosepass just up ahead," he remarked, "they're quite rare. Interested in trying to capture it?"

    My eyes gleamed with delight. Nosepass were novelties where I came from, and I'd love to take one home with me.

    "Of course, Ranger guy." I shook my head in anticipation. I looked onward to the Nosepass. It looked like it was just standing there, not being a harm to anything.

    Perfect.

    I licked my finger and held it into the air. The wing current was, fortunately, heading right into the compass Pokemon's direction. I smirked as I knelt down and took another Super Fragrance from my pack. I put my bag onto the ground and sprayed the fragrance into the air.

    "Last one. Gotta make this one count." I could see the Nosepass undoubtedly smelling the nice scent. I'm pretty sure it would have been impossible for it to not smell it, with a nose that large.

    I retrieved Gallade's Poke-ball from my belt and softly released him into the newfound battleground. He came out in a flash of light.

    "Gallade!" it exclaimed, however so softly.

    "Alright, Gallade," I whispered. "Use a Swords Dance to start us off. Then, use Shadow Sneak to get behind that Nosepass over there!" I pointed at the Pokemon, still sniffing the fragrance. "Then, once you're over there, use a good Leaf Blade to knock it off its magnetic feet. Show that magnet who's boss."

    Gallade nodded once and began the familiar maneuver. His arms glowed instantly as he spun around, like how Infernape did previously. Instantly, he sunk into the shadows on the ground. I looked onward and saw the shadow reappear behind the oblivious Nosepass. I could see Gallade tuning up his right arm for a shadowy left hook.

    OOC: Nosepass gender?

    ~~~~~
    "Of course, Ranger guy," Shawn said as I swilled down another bottle. This beer sure was helping fight off the heat, I could say that for sure. Shawn pulled out his last Fragrance and sprayed it in the direction of the Nosepass, saying, "Last one. Gotta make this one count."
    He then pulled out a Poke Ball and released his Gallade in a flash of white light. The Gallade greeted him, and then turned around to survey his opponent.
    "Alright, Gallade, use a Swords Dance to start us off. Then, use Shadow Sneak to get behind that Nosepass over there! Then, once you're over there, use a good Leaf Blade to knock it off its magnetic feet. Show that magnet who's boss," Shawn said quietly to him.
    Gallade nodded, and began stretching out his legs and arms using a ritualistic war dance. I recognised the Swords Dance - Dual used it often, and I sometimes even used it to stretch my own muscles. Dual had shown me how it pulled and teased them, increasing their strength and stamina.
    When the Swords Dance was finished, Gallade began running towards the Nosepass, except as me got closer he sank into the ground, becoming one with his shadow. The black smudge on the ground moved quickly in an arc, being careful to stay out of the Nosepass' sight. When the shadow was behind the unsuspecting Rock-type, Gallade reared out of the darkness, his right arm blade glowing bright green. He smashed the Nosepass with the glowing blade, and the Nosepass suddenly shouted with surprise in its gravelly voice.
    Silver energy flowed up from the ground along the Nosepass' skin, moving to the point of contact of the Leaf Blade. The silver energy fought with the attack for a few seconds, but then Gallade finally followed through, and the Nosepass fell onto the ground. It began using its stubby little arms to get up, but as it did so, a sphere of crackling electricity suddenly expanded from it, engulfing Gallade completely.
    OOC: Whatever you want, lol. Female?
    IC: It seemed like I was watching Gallade in slow motion as it performed its attack. No, it wasn't an attack, it was an art. I watched as Nosepass countered with a somewhat powerful Discharge attack. I was a little surprised that my Pokemon wasn't paralyzed.
    I didn't know why I wanted this Nosepass. I was aware that they were rare, and that they were quite powerful, however for some reason, these weren't the reasons I wanted it. It felt like I had an urge inside my soul to obtain it. Maybe it wasn't meant for me. Maybe, just maybe, I was only the "middle man" in this tale of fate.
    "Wow, okay...Gallade, you're doing great so far." I tried to reassure Gallade, but mainly, I was trying to reassure myself. "Heh...okay, in one fist, use Brick Break right on its head! Make sure you get it stuck into the ground! In the other hand, smack the ground to create a powerful Earthquake!"
    Gallade shook his head fiercely. It quickly shook off the static pain surging through his body and stared down the Nosepass. His right arm glowed a dark brown, the other beaming a somewhat gravel color. It pulled its right fist back as far as he could and rushed at the Nosepass. With the roar of a warrior, he jumped into the air, arms raised, the Nosepass prone to attack.
    "Wow, okay...Gallade, you're doing great so far." Shawn called. "Okay, in one fist, use Brick Break right on its head! Make sure you get it stuck into the ground! In the other hand, smack the ground to create a powerful Earthquake!"
    I shot Shawn a quick look - he was ordering an awful lot of powerful attacks, and I wasn't sure the Nosepass would be able to take them. However, I decided to say nothing, preferring instead to take another drink out of my bottle - Shawn had captured two Pokemon so far, he obviously knew what he was doing.
    Gallade pulled both his arms above his head, and then started to bring them crashing towards the ground. His right fist crashed into the Nosepass' forehead, and his right slipped past it, heading for the ground, intending to set off a localised Earthquake. Unfortunately, the Nosepass had other plans - it levitated off the ground and into the air, flying above Gallade and out of reach. It then gestured with its stubby little hands, and seven large rocks that had been laying silently on the battlefield nearby hovered off the ground as well, before suddenly flying towards Gallade.
    OOC: Male it is, then.
    IC: Gallade performed the Brick Break attack to perfection. I was amused by the satisfying slam of rock against earth. However, the Nosepass didn't seem to enjoy our advancing attacks, and shot itself into the air. The earth trembled with Gallade's Earthquake, which was unfortunately the only thing that did.
    I turned to James. He silently drank from his bottle, but I could tell that he was a little concerned. Maybe I was using too many powerful attacks. Gotta remember that I want to capture this Nosepass, not knock it out...
    I had decided that I did indeed want to catch this rocky Pokemon. I wasn't very sure if I wanted to keep it, though, yet the idea still seemed appealing to me.
    I looked at the floating Nosepass. It was well above Gallade, and I was sure that if a passerby saw, they would be amazed at the floating rock. In a matter of moments, however, the Nosepass waved its puny arms in a hypnotic fashion, and thus summoned the rocks around the improvised battlefield. About six or seven of them shot towards the green warrior.
    I knew Gallade, and he wouldn't succumb to this ancient power.
    "Gallade, shield yourself from the attack with Protect!" I called out to him. "After that, use an Aerial Ace to boost yourself up to that Nosepass and knock it back to the ground!"
    I was trying my best to make sure Gallade didn't knock the Nosepass out. Knowing Gallade, though, this could be an impossibility. I was a tad bit worried.
    I watched as Gallade brought up his shield, a pink bubble surrounding him as he braced for the rocks to make contact. His short wings glowed as he readied up his next attack.
    "Gallade, shield yourself from the attack with Protect! After that, use an Aerial Ace to boost yourself up to that Nosepass and knock it back to the ground!" Shawn called out the Blade Pokemon.
    Gallade nodded and dropped to one knee, bracing one hand on the ground. A pink energy bubble surrounded the green and white warrior, preparing to fend off the incoming rocks. I noted with slight surprise the light-red colour of the Protect - Dual's Protect was pure white in colour, and was much more form-fitting than this simple bubble.
    The rocks all crashed into the shield at the same time and deflected to the side, spinning into the ground with a thud. Seven small explosions of dust blasted up into the air, and Gallade shot up with them, his left fist and blade glowing a pale blue. Unfortunately, the Nosepass saw this coming. It held in front of it a bright blue orb. The Aerial Ace made contact with the base of its body when it threw the orb down towards Gallade. It expanded as it traveled down, smashing into Gallade, pulling him down to earth, staining the air a dark blue as it went. He hit the ground with a heavy thud, and struggled to his feet as the Nosepass hovered over the blue dome. I knew what this move was - Gravity. Both Specialle and Dual were trained in its use, Specialle much more so. This would be a problem for Shawn - Gallade were physical fighters, and there was no way he'd be able to get close and personal with the Nosepass now.
    I watched as my trusty Gallade hold its own against the Ancientpower attack. I was a little tense, almost expecting, fearing, that the Protect would break and hit my Pokemon head on. But no, it successfully held. Thankfully.
    I kept my eyes peeled on the Nosepass, making sure that its stats weren't raised by its attack. I knew far too well what Ancientpower could do. Not only could it do some decent damage to the opponent, but there was also a chance that the Pokemon's stats would rise. Translation: I could have been in a lot of trouble.
    Good things were happening one after the other, it seemed. After the Ancientpower, Gallade disabled his shield and shot up at the floating Nosepass. Schwing! I heard the air being cut as it sailed across the sky. It looked like Nosepass didn't know what to think of it as Gallade's Aerial Ace hit its stone body. Bam!
    However, it looked like it WAS expecting something like this to happen. I didn't see it initially, but the Nosepass readied a slowly increasing blue orb. I didn't think much of it until it fired the ball at my Gallade. Woosh! Both Pokemon went sailing down into the ground, not just Nosepass like I had initially hoped.
    "What? What's going on?" I was startled. It took a moment before my brain realized that the Nosepass used Gravity. "Damn, I forgot these Pokemon could learn Gravity..."
    I looked over at my struggling partner. Gallade was having troubles getting up under the intense force pushing it down. Nosepass didn't seem to have a problem. This was going to be a problem for Gallade. He was a physical fighter, but underneath this intense gravity shift, he would be lucky to even stand up. I reached for Gallade's ball in my belt, ready to recall him.
    I then thought about the possible routes we could go down from here. Maybe we should try a special move? I grabbed my iPhone from my pocket and quickly turned on the "Dex" app (who carries around real Pokedexes these days?). I swiftly scrolled through until I found Gallade's entry. I looked at its special attack stat. I was not very pleased.
    "Damn it!" I exclaimed as I put the device back into my pocket. "Alright Gallade, we can't have you battling like this! Return!" I held out his ball and watched as the red laser engulfed and consumed my Pokemon. "You did great so far, but right now you can't do much. I hope you understand, buddy." I put his ball back onto my belt. I once again reached for Politoed's ball and sent her out. She looked at me, a little confused as to why her rest was so short.
    "Sorry, Politoed, but we need you right now." I pointed at the smug Nosepass in the orb. "Now, I'm gonna try to make this quick. Use Hypnosis to make him take a snooze, and then follow up with a Mud Shot like last time." Politoed nodded in agreement, always ready to fight.
    Blooogh! The familiar hypnotic wave shot out at Nosepass. I was hoping it would hit. Oh, how I was hoping.
    OOC: So, turns out you didn't say you wanted to attempt a capture last post. Oh well, what's an extra BP between friends?
    "What? What's going on?" Shawn asked rhetorically before swearing. "Damn, I forgot these Pokemon could learn Gravity..."
    He pulled out an iPhone and flicked his thumb across the screen quickly, and then frowned and swore again. He slipped the thin device into his pocket and pulled out a Poke Ball to return Gallade, apologising as he did so. He then summoned his Politoed back out, which looked around confusedly.
    "Sorry, Politoed, but we need you right now," Shawn explained, pointing to the hovering Nosepass. "Now, I'm gonna try to make this quick. Use Hypnosis to make him take a snooze, and then follow up with a Mud Shot like last time."
    Politoed yapped agreement and bounded closer to the Nosepass, being careful to stay out of the Gravity sphere. Blue rings shot out from her eyes towards the Nosepass, surrounding him, but I didn't think he was affected. This theory was further strengthened by the fact that it continued to float around and not fall asleep. Politoed followed up on the second part of the attack, launching a huge arc of dirt towards the Nosepass, but it easily evaded the slow-moving attack thanks to its levitation powers.
    Once the attack had been completely dodged, the Rock-type flew towards Politoed like a bullet, shedding electrical sparks as it did so. It thudded into the ground like a cannonball, throwing a mushroom-shaped dust cloud into the air, which was quickly dispelled by a thousand blue sparks expanding outwards. They passed through Politoed, who groaned in discomfort.
    I watched the remnants of the dustcloud as it drifted away, waiting for the Nosepass to continue the attack, but it didn't. I realised it must have finally fallen asleep!
    I patiently looked on as Politoed performed her attacks. I was worried, like always. What if Hypnosis missed? I'd be in for some trouble.
    But, alas, I should have worried not. The Hypnosis hit! I peered at the wild rock, checking, analyzing to see if it was truly sleeping. I could hear robotic snores coming from its definitive nose. Yes, it was asleep.
    However, in my haste, I had forgotten that the Nosepass was still capable of floating, and thus Politoed's Mud Shot missed completely. Nosepass used this to its advantage and fired off a swift Shock Wave. Politoed winced heavily, but still seemed able to fight.
    "Politoed, don't try to attack anymore for now! I'm gonna catch this thing so we can go home!" I beemed cheerily at my Pokemon.
    I reached down for an empty Super Ball on my belt and enlarged it. I looked over at the still sleeping Nosepass as I readied my throw.
    "Hyah!" I tossed the ball with all my might. Might have strained something. I don't know. But, I did know that I wanted to leave this hot place.
    "Politoed, don't try to attack anymore for now! I'm gonna catch this thing so we can go home!" Shawn said to his Pokemon. Politoed yapped affirmation as Shawn pulled out a Super Ball and threw it hard at the Nosepass. It struck the Pokemon's hard back and absorbed it in a flash of red light. The ball wiggled twice and then stilled as the capture mechanism locked down.
    "Congratulations, you just captured a Nosepass," I said to Shawn, stumbling slightly on my way to pick it up. The beer was starting to get to me, but I didn't want to let Shawn see that. I stowed the ball safely in my pack, and took a quick look around. I didn't particularly want to walk the whole way back, so I decided to cheat a little. I summoned Broadblade, my Staraptor, and scratched his beak by way of greeting.
    "Up to giving us a lift back to base?" I asked him.
    He shot me a look as if to say You lazy bastard, but lowered himself to the ground, silently consenting. Shawn returned his Politoed and climbed up onto the Staraptor's back behind me with my help.
    "Hold with your knees, not your hands," I instructed, slightly slurring my words. "He doesn't like it when people yank his feathers out."
    Broadlade stood up straight and ruffled his wings before launching into the sky. It'd only be a twenty minute flight all the way back to the Docks, and hopefully by then I will be starting to sober up. The last thing I wanted was to cop an earful from either Ivy or Elisa from drinking on the job.
