"Well back to work today. I hate work," I said to myself, as I made a cup of coffee. I returned back to my ranger home not long ago, because I knew the National Park needed more rangers around to help it run a little smoother for the trainers. Since I always liked the park I saw no reason to not start rangering again, and trying to help out. And in doing so I picked up a run that I was going to begin today. Shortly after making my cup of coffee actually.

"Hmm lets see, I have my coffee, my phone, my bag of supplies, my other bag full of food, and pants. Can't forget those. Guess all that's left is decide which Pokemon walks with me, and which other ones I'll bring along. Think I'll bring; Ambipom, Infernape, Chandelure, Litwick, Scizor, and Gardevoir. That should be a good enough spread of my Pokemon, in case something were to happen. Speaking of which I guess she can accompany me," I said as I threw her Pokeball in the air.

Ah, guess it's time to go guide someone through the park again? Gardevoir asked.

"Yep, let's get going before we're late, and someone hits me with something. Probably a clock." And with that we were off.

It wasn't that far to the front gate, but walking was for suckers who didn't have a Pokemon with Teleport, so Gardevoir just teleported us there to save the all of three minutes it would have taken to walk.

So, what do you know of today's run, and visitor?

"No idea. Don't even know the person at all, and it's his first time here. Also he's visiting the Enigma Ruins, so anything can appear, and happen. Hopefully whatever happens is interesting though," I said to Gardevoir, as I drank my coffee, and waited.

"Here we are guys," I said, addressing the two Pokemon I kept sealed in their Pokeballs, "Let's do our best out there and make some new friends."

Standing before me was the entrance to the National Park, a grand stretch of land where trainers could go on guided tours and many exotic areas and catch rare Pokemon. However, I put off my visit due to the high price, and with so many different locations, choosing a favorite from the different possible Pokemon encounters was difficult. Recently my friends told me of a special place in the park where the rooms magically transformed into different locations. Visiting a place as random as these Enigma Ruins made dressing appropriately for the weather difficult, so I chose to wear a red sweater and jeans and hope that I wasn't dropped in the middle of a volcano or in a frozen lake. Taking one last moment to prepare myself, I pushed through the front gate and took my first steps into the park. At first the inside was empty, but something flickered and a ranger standing next to a white humanoid Pokemon with green hair appeared before me. I jumped back in fear, slightly startled by their sudden appearance.

"Sorry, I didn't see you there," I apologized before pulling out my ID, "my name's Dan, and I'm supposed to be taking my first trip through the National Park today."

I stood around for maybe ten minutes or so waiting. In that time I just continued to drink my coffee, exchange words with Gardevoir, and continued to read up on Dan, and the Enigma Ruins. I saw Dan was only bringing along two Pokemon, but could capture four during this run. I didn't know if that was because he just felt like bringing along two only, or if he only had two, but it didn't really matter, because two could be enough as long as they were spaced out enough between battles.

Huh, what's that? Gardevoir said to me, looking to her right.

I took a glance over, and noticed someone standing there. "Well, I guess it's time to get to work," I'd said to myself.

"Sorry, I didn't see you there, my name's Dan, and I'm supposed to be taking my first trip through the National Park today."

"Good to meet you, Dan. I'm Eric, and this is my Gardevoir. She doesn't have a nickname because I'm very unoriginal," I said, laughing a bit as I handed back his ID.

"Well everything seems to be in order, so lets get going."

With that I opened up the gate, and we were off.

"The Ruins are an interesting choice for your first run. It's an unusual place that can take on the appearance of another location, and can sometimes change randomly. No one is really sure why, but everyone has their own theory," I'd said to Dan.

Isn't your theory that it's just made up by a bunch of Ditto? Gardvoir said to my telepathically.

    Quiet you.

We kept walking, and as we made our way a bit into the ruins, I noticed a faint smell of ash, and as we kept walking I noticed a bunch of rocks, and gravel.

"Well looks like we're dealing with the appearance of Mount Deckbi. That's always somewhere that's interesting to be, with its cave system, and volcano. I wonder what," I started saying, before stopping at hearing a Pokemon.

It let out a faint little cry, much like a baby. It was essentially all blue color, and resembled a mouse to the eyes. It had a thin tail, and on the end of its tail was a ball that was almost as big as the rest of its body. This was one of those unusual Pokemon that started out as one type, and then changed upon evolving.

"Well, looks like an Azurill is up first for you. Just proves how odd the Ruins can be, because you'd never see this anywhere near Deckbi normally. Well, do you have any interest in it? After all Azumarill is an occasionally used Fairy-type Pokemon."

Standing in the middle of rocky terrain with the faint smell of a fire and ash is the last place I expected to be during my National Park run. I had been told that the Enigma Ruins could be unpredictable, but the realism of this place was beyond belief.

"Well looks like we're dealing with the appearance of Mount Deckbi. That's always somewhere that's interesting to be, with its cave system, and volcano. I wonder what," the ranger explained, before stopping at a small sound.

The ranger pointed out the source of the cry, a small blue Pokemon with a large tail that was basically as big as its body. While I had never seen one up close, I recognized the Azurill as a member of the Marill evolutionary line. Seeing a baby Pokemon in the middle of a volcanic area was quite a surprise. The ranger asked if I had any interest in catching it, but I only had 4 park balls with me and an entire tour ahead of me.

"I think I'll let this little guy go," I told the ranger.

"I think I'll let this little guy go," Dan responded.

"Ah, understandable. Nothing wrong with not wanting to go for the first thing that comes your way," I replied.

Everyone had their own preferences, as to what types they liked, and what they wanted to use to battle with, or found interesting to own, and when you could only leave with a limited amount of Pokemon you had to choose what you would go for, and what you would pass up on. It was the nature of the park, and it made a lot of sense.

"Well then, I suppose we should get going and see what we might find next." With that we started to head off.

"So, is there anything you're looking for in particular, or are you just looking for anything that seems interesting?" I'd asked as we continued walking.

After walking for a few minutes, I felt a quick gust of freezing cold wind blow in our direction.

"Brrr, what was that," I said as I shivered a bit, and looked back to see the Azurill, having used an Icy Wind to get our attention, and much to my surprise now looking much tougher, and reassured of itself then only moments ago.

"Well, Dan, it looks like this little fella hasn't given up on us just yet. Do you still have no desire to battle it? If not you can try to flee again and see how it goes, or for 500 monies you can buy a Pokedoll if you're in a pinch. I mean they are only suppose to be last ditch efforts for trainers who don't bring any themselves, but I always carry just enough to match the amount of Pokemon a trainer would encounter. Just as an insurance policy."

We quickly left the Azurill behind to its own devices, continuing our hike through the ruins.

"So, is there anything you're looking for in particular, or are you just looking for anything that seems interesting?" I'd asked as we continued walking.

"I'm mostly looking for fast Pokemon," I answered honestly, "none of the Pokemon I have are particularly fast, so something that can move quickly would be nice."

As some more time passed, we began to feel a chill in the air. Even with my sweater, I could fill the air getting colder despite us being in a pretty dry place. The ranger pointed behind us, where the Azurill we encountered earlier was hot on our trail. Judging by the look on its face, I began to suspect that Azurill was feeling confident because we had tried to run away from it. Still, it was a young Pokemon, and neither Vanguard or I would be happy with having to hurt it to get away. Another issue was Rathian, her typing made her very susceptible to Fairy-type attacks, and even if Azurill didn't know any, it at least had an Ice-type attack that would give us trouble. The ranger offered to sell me a Pokedoll to help our escape, but it was still too early for me to consider buying extra supplies. I turned to speak with Azurill directly, taking care not to make any sudden approach in case it decided to attack.

"Listen buddy," I explained in a calm manner, "we're sorry we bothered you, but we didn't mean to cause any trouble," I turned back to the ranger, hoping that my apology had satisfied Azurill, "let's keep going."

"Listen buddy, we're sorry we bothered you, but we didn't mean to cause any trouble. Let's keep going," Dan said, after talking to the Azurill.

"You heard him, sorry to get in your way, but don't have the time to play right now. Well, I do, but that's cause I don't get paid by the hour," I said, starting to ramble. In doing this the Azurill walked away, probably going to do something else.

"Well then, let's go." With that we continued along, this time knowing Azurill wasn't going to keep following.

We walked along the stretch of land for about five or so minutes, as we headed toward one of the caves. The cave system was usually a place where various Pokemon hid, or at least in their natural habit of their regular respective locations. But going this way would also lead us toward the volcano, and while that could spell trouble, it could also mean adventure, and more action.

As we continued to walk, I noticed a medium sized rock, no bigger than maybe three feet, and maybe a bit wider than myself. I thought I heard a faint noise coming from its area, so I thought maybe I'd do some investigating.

"Come on out for a minute, Infernape," I said to its Pokeball, as I let the Pokemon out.

"Hey, Infernape, break that rock for me," I'd asked it, who seemed willing to do so.

But, Eric, Infernape doesn't know Rock Smash. Gardevoir let out after hearing this.

"Bull crap, this isn't some game telling me what I need to do what. Infernape can just as easily do a Mach Punch to get the job done."

Infernape quickly put its arm back, and in an instant threw a quick punch, smashing the rock to bits. After doing so my suspicions of a Pokemon being there proved to be correct as it peaked its head out.

It looked like a little turtle, another thing that would be unusual to see at Mount Deckbi. Its body was blue in color, while its shell was black in color. It was very unusual seeing this Pokemon, as you could normally only find them by reviving one of their fossil.

"Well it's not quite speedy, but do you want this Tirtouga? Being a Pokemon you can usually only get from a fossil it is a bit of a rare find."

It was one surprise after the next in the Enigma Ruins. The ranger broke open a rock and revealed a prehistoric Pokemon I had only seen in history books.

"Well it's not quite speedy, but do you want this Tirtouga? Being a Pokemon you can usually only get from a fossil it is a bit of a rare find."

I thought about it carefully for a moment, taking the ranger's words into consideration. While an aquatic turtle was pretty much the opposite of a fast Pokemon, something about the creature's dopey black face cried out to me.

"I think I can spare a Park Ball or two for this little guy," I told the ranger, reaching for one of my two Pokeballs, "Vanguard, take the lead with Shadow Sneak."

My Pokeball opened wide, revealing my Aegislash that I had nicknamed Vanguard. Hailing from the Unova region, Aegislash was a bronze sword Pokemon bearing a round shield using its tassels as hands. The haunted sword quickly unsheathed himself, casting a shadow on the ground that crept up behind the startled Tirtouga. The shadow rose up from the ground, taking a life of its own as it readied its ghostly sword to attack. I took a deep breath, as my first battle in National Park would begin with this move.

IC: Dan stood there, deciding whether or not he would go for this thing. Couldn't really blame him, seeing as how he said he wanted something fast, and Tirtouga and its evolution, Carracosta were far from that.

"I think I can spare a Park Ball or two for this little guy," Dan told me, having made his decision as he went to grab one of his Pokeballs.

"Vanguard, take the lead with Shadow Sneak."

Dan wasted absolutely no time in ordering what move to be used. I mean he said it before his Aegislash was even out of its ball.

Aegislash appeared, and it was a sight to behold. A very powerful Pokemon that could change from offensive to defensive based in an instant depending on the choice of certain moves. At this current time, since it was using Shadow Sneak it would be in its attack based form.

Shadow Sneak wasn't anything fancy. It was just like Quick Attack, or even the Mach Punch Infernape did earlier, only it was a Ghost-type variation. The user would rely on its shadow to do the attacking. By sending energy into it, it would go over behind the foe, and strike them before they could move usually. Or something like that. I wasn't entirely sure how it worked at times, given that attacking with a shadow seemed odd, but hey I knew better than to question these things.

Aegislash's shadow got behind the Tirtouga, and knocked it into the air, as we all looked on. After doing this though Dan's Pokemon was left wide open, and once Tirtouga regained its composer and landed on the ground, it got a look at the broken pieces of rock around that it was hiding under, and slapped a few of them over at Aegislash. Although it didn't do much damage, given it was a Steel-type it was still something that felt.

Huh, wonder why it would use a move like Smack Down, and not a Water-type move. Very odd, I thought to myself as I continued to watch the battle.

Vanguard shook off the Rock-type attack with relative ease. Despite being in a form that forgoes defense for raw power, his steel typing was enough to protect him from any major damage. Still, I was impressed by how quickly Tirtouga was able to react and counter-attack with Smack Down. Sure a sea turtle wasn't the fastest creature, but maybe being slow gave it more time to plan ahead. I began to reconsider my pursuit of fast Pokemon, but there were other priorities at the moment. My Aegislash was a gentle Pokemon that needed encouraging, but was also against bullying weaker Pokemon. If I wanted to keep Vanguard’s obedience, I would have to make sure that he understood why I had picked a fight with Tirtouga in the first place.

"Nice job in catching it by surprise Vanguard," I said, "this Tirtouga seems pretty strong, so let's do our best not to scare it off or injure it."

Vanguard nodded in approval, realizing that I would rather capture a Pokemon than defeat it.

"So let's start by testing just how good this Pokemon is," I continued, "I want you to use Shadow Ball, then immediately follow up with Iron Head."

My Aegislash let our a cry to acknowledge my commands before turning his focus on attacking. By using his ghostly presence, Vanguard was able to draw in shadows around him, giving them a solid form. An inky ball materialized in front of the shield that he was holding in his left tassel, and a sharp bump sent the inky ball flying towards the wild Pokemon. The second part of my instructions was fairly simple, he charged forward with the hilt of his sword glowing with a silver sheen, intent on bumping Tirtouga with a strong Steel-type attack.

"So, Gardevoir, what do you think will happen next?"

Don't know, your guess is just as good as mine. Anything can happen really.

Gardevoir was right, when it came to something like the Enigma Ruins, and an ancient Pokemon like Tirtouga going up against a trainer anything could indeed happen. I think the first round of this battle proved that when Tirtouga took advantage of its surrounding to do an attack. I mean of course give the unintentional assist to Infernape but still.

"Nice job in catching it by surprise Vanguard, this Tirtouga seems pretty strong, so let's do our best not to scare it off or injure it," Dan said to his Aegislash.

I was definitely curious to see what would happen next, because based on strength alone, Aegislash no doubt had a clear advantage, but a lot of Pokemon that roamed freely in the park were incredibly clever, like they were being commanded as well, and had a superb battle sense.

"So let's start by testing just how good this Pokemon is, I want you to use Shadow Ball, then immediately follow up with Iron Head."

Ahh, so he's going all out with some powerful STAB moves huh? I thought to myself.

Shadow Ball, and Iron Head were two of the strongest moves that an Aegislash could know, and more so when you factored in the boost they got from its STAB.

Aegislash got into position and formed a dark purple colored ball in front of itself. Shadow Ball, much like the Shadow Sneak earlier was a Ghost-type variation of other moves, like Energy Ball. The ball itself was visibly full of energy, and based on how much strength the user had, or how much energy was put into it was visibly noticeable in the ball.

Aegislash fired the attack, and Tirtouga stayed right in position and just attempted to block it. Although it was no doubt hit by the attack, it certainly didn't show signs of being hurt too much. In retaliation rather than attack it continued staying in position, and hardened its body like Aegislash's. It was no doubt using Iron Defense to raise its defense, and be able to take anything thrown at it.

Despite boosting itself up, Aegislash still flew over, and putting all of its energy into its head went to slam it against Tirtouga. Though as a counter measure for the attack, Tirtouga stuck its strengthen shell up to rebound Aegislash and give itself an opening.

Right after this Tirtouga's left front flipper glowed almost black in color, and it slapped Aegislash right in its forehead.

Hm, it must have just used Knock Off. Or I think so anyway, I'd thought.

Knock Off was a relatively common move used lately. The using Pokemon would slap the opposing one, and knock off whatever item it may have been holding. Fortunately for Dan Pokemon didn't hold items in the park so there was no worry of losing some trump item during the battle. Still though this Tirtouga was putting up an interesting fight, and trying to hold its ground even though it was no doubt outmatched. Personally I felt it was good to see though, because it was a good way to test someones battle skills, and how they would handle themself in a situation like this.

    Current Battle Stats

Mild/Male/Aegislash 88% Used Shadow Ball and Iron Head

Having taken Vanguard's Shadow Ball head-on, Tirtouga steeled its defenses and flipped my Aegislash over. Even though he was clearly stronger, I began to worry about Vanguard's health. If Tirtouga was improving its own defenses, then this battle would take longer than I had originally expected. I wasn't worried that Vanguard would lose here, but the more damage we took, the riskier future battles in the ruins would be. Feeling myself start to panic, I quickly tried to comfort both myself and Vanguard with some words of confidence.

"Nice work with that combination," I said, taking deep breaths to calm myself, "I underestimated Tirtouga. It's not just strong, but brave too."

After seeing it take two of Vanguard's strongest attacks without hesitating, I began to understand how an ancient Pokemon like Tirtouga managed to survive this long in such a chaotic area of the park. In fact, I wasn't sure what could possibly cause a species like it to go extinct. If I was going to get the upper hand in this battle, I would have to use more than just offense to fight.

"Vanguard, use King's Shield," I called out.

The large sword Pokemon grabbed his shield with both tassels, crossing them tightly around its tassels. Vanguard then slid its sword body in between the shield and tassels, taking its defensive stance for the first time this battle. In addition, the shield created a wide barrier to further protect my Pokemon from harm. King's Shield was capable of preventing any damage it would receive, but it wasn't perfect. In this state Vanguard was helpless to status moves, and if something was fast enough to get behind the shield, it could still do damage if we weren't careful.

"Good job buddy," I said, "now prepare Sacred Sword and watch Tirtouga carefully. If it makes any careless moves, attack it."

From behind the cover of its shield, Vanguard began focusing energy into the blade of its sword body. A sharp purple aura formed around the edge of the blade, increasing its length. Sacred Sword was a powerful move that only the Aegislash line and several mythical Pokemon knew. By focusing its energy into a single point, the user was able to cut through any form of defense. Vanguard and I watched carefully, Tirtouga would have to make a move eventually, and when it did we would strike.

The battle continued to go on with neither side showing any sign of giving in. Gardevoir, Infernape, and myself all watched in anticipation as to what Dan would tell his Aegislash to do next, and what Tirtouga would do to counteract that.

"Vanguard, use King's Shield," Dan commanded.

It was a smart move, I believed. King's Shield would change Aegislash back into its Shield Forme, and protect it from all damage from attacks until it used another move. However it wasn't an ultimate coverage move, like Protect or Detect, Aegislash could still be hit by a status move such as Thunder Wave. Though as I pulled out my Pokedex and checked, I saw Tirtouga couldn't really learn any status moves that would be worth using right now, short of maybe Swagger, but the attack boost that came along with it would always make it risky no matter what.

Tirtouga seeing what Aegislash was doing prepared itself, and used a protection move of its own. It made a little body double, or like a doll and used it as a shield over itself. It was using Substitute, a move that took a fourth of the users maximum health to use, and would create a dummy to take hits until it broke.

Not bad, Tirtouga seems to try to be mimicking some moves that Aegislash is using, only in its own way, I thought to myself.

"Good job buddy, now prepare Sacred Sword and watch Tirtouga carefully. If it makes any careless moves, attack it," Dan commanded.

Aegislash changed right back into its Attack Forme and prepared its move. Sacred Sword was a rare move to see, as short of Aegislash the only other Pokemon to know it where the group known as "Swords of Justice". They would all always use their horns to attack, but Aegislash being a blade used that itself for the attack.

It rushed over, and using its body split the substitute clean in half down the center revealing Tirtouga once more. Though the turtle wasn't without its own tricks as it was prepared a blast of ice in its mouth the whole time. The attack was no doubt Ice Beam.

Tirtouga fired out the beam directly at Aegislash, and due to how close it was it was hit head on. Now fortunately it resisted Ice-type moves, so the damage would be minimal, but there was always the chance of a freeze.

After a moment I took a look and noticed that Aegislash didn't freeze over, which was good for Dan, but at the same time it made me wonder just what kind of stunt Tirtouga was trying to pull with all of these move choices it was making.

If I tried to launch an all-out offensive, I was met with equal resistance. But on the other hand, if I tried to play defensively, I was giving Tirtouga a chance to prepare its own schemes. It seemed like any success I was having in the battle so far was thanks to Vanguard's typing and obedience. If I was going to amount to anything in this world, I needed to start thinking on my own two feet instead of depending on others to carry my share of the work. Likewise, if I was going to capture this wild Pokemon, I had to play to Vanguard's strength. While it seemed natural for Pokemon shaped like a large sword to have high attack, Aegislash was also gifted with high Special Attack. My next big idea was to emphasize that trait and start weakening Tirtouga's ability to deal with multiple Shadow Balls.

"Vanguard, soften it up with Metal Sound," I said.

Using his shield as a board, Vanguard slowly scraped his blade across the metal surface. The friction caused by the two metal objects rubbing together created an incredibly sharp sound, grating enough to give myself a headache. Metal Sound's intended purpose was to lower the special defense of opposing Pokemon, making them more vulnerable to attacks like Shadow Ball. If Tirtouga was going to meet any move I made, then I would have to make moves that were difficult for it to imitate. By increasing the damage Vanguard's attacks did, Tirtouga would have a much harder time keeping up with us, which eventually give me an opportunity to capture it.

This battle had been going on for some time now, yet it didn't really show any signs of being closed to finished. Whatever Dan was doing, Tirtouga had an answer for it. It must have been all the years of knowledge one of these things had, being an ancient Pokemon and all. I was curious as to what Dan would do next. His Pokemon weren't really EM'ed at all, so he didn't have many options. It still made for an interesting battle though.

"Vanguard, soften it up with Metal Sound," Dan ordered.

Ahh, Metal Sound, not bad. Tirtouga boosted its Defense, but by doing this it would become far more open to Special Attacks, still though, just in case I better say something, I'd thought.

"Hey, Dan, just be careful you don't knock that thing out, because if you do you can't catch it. Although I'm sure you already knew that," I warned Dan, just in case.

Metal Sound was a Special Defense version of Screech. The user would let out a horrible noise that would drop the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense by two stages. Of course there were ways around that such as using something like Protect, or just covering your ears.

Aegislash looked at its foe, who was starting to show signs of being a little winded, and let out the Metal Sound noise.

"That doesn't sound like anything metal, it sounds more like loud screeching," I'd said to myself as I saw both, Gardevoir, and Infernape holding their ears from this noise.

"Eh, guess it only works on Pokemon."

Tirtouga was visibly annoyed by this, and rather than try to attack from a distance to get Aegislash to stop, it pushed itself against the ground, and bounced up. While in the air its tail took on the appearance of water, and was used to slap Aegislash to get it to stop making that noise. Although it did only hit it slightly it got the job done, as Aegislash stopped to get out of the way. Though it was a bit late, as it definitely took its toll against the little turtle.

I smiled as I watched Tirtouga visibly struggle to counter Vanguard's Metal Sound. It was beginning to look like we'd be able to take the lead in this battle.

"Hey, Dan, just be careful you don't knock that thing out, because if you do you can't catch it. Although I'm sure you already knew that," the ranger warned me.

"Don't worry, Vanguard and I will be careful," I replied.

Now that Tirtouga will be more vulnerable to special attacks, I could add more complexity to my commands. I could feel a warmth swelling up in my stomach, this battle was starting to get fun. Now that I had seen Tirtouga's reactions, I was beginning to get an idea of how to play around it.

"Alright Vanguard, pop it up into the air with Shadow Sneak," I said, "then use Shadow Ball followed by King's Shield!"

Just like when the battle started, Vanguard raised his blade into the air, casting a long shadow that crept towards Tirtouga. While the shadow was already rearing out, Vanguard began drawing in energy to form another black ball of Ghost-type power. The plan was for Shadow Sneak to knock Tirtouga off balance, letting Shadow Ball score a direct hit on it. Then afterwards Vanguard would enter Shield Stance again and block any attempted counterattack. This combination relied on the initial Shadow Sneak to hit, but as long as Tirtouga wasn't able to knock him off balance, Vanguard would be relatively safe behind King's Shield in case the combination did fail.

"Don't worry, Vanguard and I will be careful," Dan said in response to my warning.

I figured Dan would know that anyway, but it never hurt to warn anyone in the park, just in case.

"Alright Vanguard, pop it up into the air with Shadow Sneak, then use Shadow Ball followed by King's Shield!"

That's being careful? I thought to myself. Seemed like a powerful combo, but I wasn't entirely sure.

Dan had already used all three of these moves, but I wasn't too surprised to see any of them again because without extra moves Aegislash didn't have too many options. Generally no Pokemon did, unless it was a Ditto because then it would just copy its opponent. Ditto wasn't here though, so it was back to the matter at hand, and that was Aegislash's combo. I had to wonder what Tirtouga would do in response to this.

Aegislash, just like before, sent its shadow directly behind Tirtouga, and used it to fling the little turtle into the air. It once again prepared a Shadow Ball, and fired it off, though this time Tirtouga prepared itself. It regained its composure in midair, and formed a barrier that Shadow Ball hit, having the attack break apart and scatter bits of energy all over. Tirtouga used Protect, a power move that shields the user from generally all moves the turn its used, though it was tough to use multiple turns in a row.

Before Aegislash could finish up, as it was still in a stance from its last move, Tirtouga blew out a powerful blast of water, which you could see was wavelike in the center. It was using Water Pulse, a Water-type move that wasn't all that power, but could confuse the target.

The attack hit head on, and knocked Aegislash back a few feet back though in all the commotion Aegislash had gotten in its King's Shield. If nothing else it would work as a barrier under it got its next move out.

"If I had to guess, I'd say Tirtouga is starting to run low on tricks itself," I'd said to Dan as I waited to see what would come next.

Having your confidence broken is a terrible feeling. Everybody needs to be humble, but those moments come where you feel like you’re at an all-time high, only to be sent back to start. I had finally begun to get a grip on this battle, but Tirtouga continued to resist even my most complex combinations. I could tell that the fatigue of battle was beginning to take its toll on Vanguard as well, he shook around behind his King’s Shield. Things were getting difficult, and this was a situation that neither of us were really good in.

"If I had to guess, I'd say Tirtouga is starting to run low on tricks itself," the ranger said.

“That’s right,” I replied, trying to make myself seem confident.

That was when it dawned on me, if we were both out of tricks, then I could win handily. None of Tirtouga’s attacks had done any significant damage to Vanguard on their own, meanwhile it had been forced to use a lot of its energy just to defend itself from our attacks. While it was far from optimal, I resolved to continue fighting by taking advantage of the difference in power between the two Pokemon. As long as I avoided taking any outrageous risks, I could slowly weaken Tirtouga to the point of capture without putting Vanguard in danger of being knocked out. I had been so focused on the entire trip through the park that I was ignoring the battle right before me.

“Ok Vanguard, we’re done playing around,” I said, “we’re going to draw this battle out so that I can capture Tirtouga.”

Vanguard nodded from behind his shield, he rarely liked to overwhelm opponents, so this style of battle is more comfortable for him. I thought carefully about what moves to use, Tirtouga’s defenses were strong, but every Pokemon has a limit when it comes to super-effective attacks. After removing Vanguard’s Steel and Fighting-type attacks, I was left with a small selection of Ghost-type moves, and a few stray moves. Now that I was thinking of Aegislash’s entire movepool, I remembered a move that had come in handy in a Pokemon battle long ago, when Vanguard was still a Honedge. Our opponent was using a Dark-type Pokemon, which had a clear advantage over my Ghost-type. Vanguard’s Ghost attacks weren’t effective, and he hadn’t learned any good Steel moves either. We did however, have a Bug-type attack at our disposal. While it wasn’t very strong, the damage it dealt could build up quickly. It was the perfect move to weaken a slower Pokemon to prepare it for capture.

“Alright, use Fury Cutter!” I called out.

Vanguard lowered his shield and charged forward, sword body in hand. The edge of the blade began glowing in an odd pale green light that left of thin trail behind it. The Aegislash began swinging wildly in the air, creating green light with every swing. Fury Cutter was a tricky move, somewhat similar to Rollout, the very beginning of the move did minimal damage. But as the user kept moving and swinging, the green energy would grow larger and larger, dealing more damage with every swing. Faced with a fast-moving wall of slashes, it was up to Tirtouga to decide how it would combat such a swift-moving technique.

“Ok Vanguard, we’re done playing around, we’re going to draw this battle out so that I can capture Tirtouga," Dan said to his Aegislash.

Good move, I thought to myself. Ensuring you could secure a capture was one of the most important things to do in the park.

“Alright, use Fury Cutter!” Dan yelled out.

Fury Cutter was a mildly weak Bug-type move, but if it was used repeatedly it grow stronger each time until it reached its maximum power. The user generally used a scythe, such as in the case of Scyther, or claws, like in the case of Sandslash to deliver the attack.

The bottom of Aegislash's body/blade started to grow a dark green as it headed over to Tirtouga. It went at a good time as the turtle was still trying to catch its breath from before, and was directly sliced at. As I saw it move back from the hit it didn't look like something that boosted its defense. I thought about it for a second, and as I saw Tirtouga try to regroup it dawned on me what must have occurred.

"Well, looks like you got a critical hit. That was some good fortune," I'd said to Dan. It was good because it sped up the battle a bit, and hit on a move that wasn't all that power so there was no worry of it doing too much damage. It was the perfect moment for it.

I stood by and watched as Tirtouga got itself together. I saw the look in its eyes, and I knew that now it meant business after that last attack.

Tirtouga got into position and used Shell Smash, a powerful self status move that wasn't known by too many Pokemon. It was decrease the users Defense, and Special Defense by one stage each, but in return it would raise its Attack, Special Attack, and Speed by two stages making it something deadly to deal with. Sacrificing defense for speed and power was risky, but sometimes that was the route you had to go down if you wanted to try to win.

Using a Shell Smash at this point in the battle must have meant Tirtouga was going to try to wrap things up soon itself if at all possible. I wasn't too worried for Dan, or his Aegislash but this definitely might make things more interesting. Or maybe this was just going to cost Tirtouga the battle. I don't know.

"Way to go Vanguard!" I celebrated, proud that Fury Cutter was more than successful.

I watched in awe as Tirtouga smashed its own shell, increasing its strength and speed in exchange for its defensive prowess. It reminded me of fighting with Vanguard in a way, switching between Sword and Shield stances meant constantly adapting to our new strengths and weaknesses. It helped me come to an even greater realization, if we were too weak, we boost our attack. If we are too fragile, we boost our defenses. There was nothing stopping my team from using moves to improve their own speed. Watching Tirtouga battle had enlightened me to the importance of raising stats, and with an effective move like Shell Smash, I had to catch it. But with its lowered defenses, Tirtouga was also more likely to be knocked out if I went overboard with another attack. This time I was going to use a more consistent move. One that was stronger than Fury Cutter, but only hit once, limiting the chance of dealing unnecessary critical damage to the wild Pokemon.

"Vanguard, go with Aerial Ace!" I commanded, "hit it nice and clean, then I'll get ready to catch it when you do."

Hearing my command, Vanguard raised itself upward, reflecting the light off the tip of his blade. Then with a mighty slashing motion, he threw the blade forward, slicing through the air as he rocketed towards the wild turtle. Aerial Ace was a fast-moving Flying-type attack that was so good at catching an opponent off-guard that it rarely missed. It was also less effective against Rock-type opponents, and with Vanguard’s own aversion to knocking out opponents, I felt confident in our chances of safely lowering Tirtouga’s health so that I could capture it.
