A brand new run has just run across the system and I quickly snagged it. I wanted it because I hadn’t been on any runs in a few days, and because it was going to the Botanical Gardens, a place I had never been before. The Gardens and Woods were two of the areas I was anxious to see both as a ranger and trainer.

This run was for a trainer named Ed Fitch, a young and up-coming trainer. I didn’t know too much about him, but I did hear good things from peers. His battling style was pretty good and I wanted to see it.

The Botanical Gardens was an area that contained a lot of Grass Pokemon, with some Normal and Flying types scattered with them. I wasn’t personally tempted by those Normal and Flying Pokemon, but I was looking forward to some of the Grass Pokemon.

Some really good Pokemon like Cottonee lived in the area. I already had a Whimsicott, but they were excellent Pokemon to use as trade bait. Many people wanted one.

I hooked on the last of my gear and Pokemon as I pulled up Fitch’s profile. I could see that he was bringing along some nicely trained Pokemon, and he was a repeating client of the Park, having made multiple trips, his last being to the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes trip had been pretty productive, hopefully this run would be for him as well.

With everything ready I had my Alakazam teleport me to the gate of the Gardens. I settled down to wait for the approach of Fitch.

"Later man, have a good one." I said as I said my farewell to Chainy, who had just rangered my expedition through the Great Lakes.

Chainy wandered back to his office as I worked my way up to the front desk. Awkwardly enough, the woman was the secretary that I just had a quicky with before leaving for the Lakes.

"Back for more?" The average-looking secretary asked seductively, raising her left eyebrow.

"Nah dude, I'm too beat, maybe another time. I was actually hoping to go out on another run." I responded with a bored tone.

"Oh..." The secretary said, disappointed. "Two in one day? That's odd. But, sure, where would you like to go?"

    "Gardens, please. Three Pokemon."

The woman nodded and began to type stuff out on the computer. I leaned on the counter and began to think of the Pokemon I should bring with me. I'd certainly be bringing Buzz; he was on a hot streak having caught all three of my Pokemon in the Lakes earlier.

After a few moments the woman wheeled her chair over to the printer, retrieved a freshly printed paper, and rolled back over to me. She scribbled something on the top before handing it to me. "Here you go." She said with a wink.

I read the paper. My ranger was a fella named Gaius Tyrannius. I'd yet to be taken on an expedition by this man, so I was looking forward to getting to meet some new rangers. I briefly scanned the directions before glancing at the top at what the secretary scribbled. It was a phone numbers, her's I assume. I chuckled and walked out, wanting to get to the garden gate quickly, as it was already about two o'clock.

    ...

I saw the gates coming into view, as well as a young man waiting there. I assumed it was my ranger, so I gave him a big wave so he would see me.

"How's it going?" I called out when I got within ear shot of the man.

I extended my hand out as I got closer. "I'm Ed Fitch, you must be my ranger?"

I didn’t have to wait long before I spotted a young man come walking up the trail leading to the Gardens. I knew it was him because his picture matched the profile I had on him, and because he waved to get my attention.

“How’s it going?” he called once he realized I had spotted him. I returned the wave and waited for him to get closer. “I’m Ed Fitch, you must be my ranger!” he said, once he got close enough for a proper introduction.

I shook his extended hand. “Welcome to the Gardens, I’m Gaius Tyrannius and I’ll be escorting you around today. It’s already well past midday, so let’s not linger for long, otherwise we’ll be out here while it’s dark.”

I entered our information into the gate controls and it swung open, admitting us to the spacious Gardens. In my opinion, the Gardens were the man-made equivalent of the Garden of Eden, closest thing to the real deal. As such, many Pokemon called this place there home and loved it.

I had just locked the gate back up when I heard a rustling from a nearby tree. I turned to the direction of the sound and saw a brown Nuzleaf come bounding down from its canopy. It sized us both up and tilted its head in a challenge.

“That was quick,” I muttered to Ed. “You want a Nuzleaf?”

The man reached out and shook my hand. “Welcome to the Gardens, I’m Gaius Tyrannius and I’ll be escorting you around today. It’s already well past midday, so let’s not linger for long, otherwise we’ll be out here while it’s dark.”

I nodded in agreement as Gaius entered some information into some electronic device on the gate and it swung open. He led the way as we walked into the park. It was quite a beautiful place. Although the Great Lakes were more beautiful, in my opinion, it was still nice. I also imagined the Woods being quite an impressive place, but I haven't been there.

As we made our way into the Gardens, there was a rustling in a tree nearby. Gaius and I whipped our heads around to spot the noise, and right on queue, a small brown elf-looking Pokemon with a leaf on it's head leaped down from a tree and cocked it's head at us, seemingly looking for a fight.

“That was quick,” Gaius muttered. “You want a Nuzleaf?”

I pondered it for a second. Nuzleaf evolved into Shiftry, which was a nifty Pokemon and could certainly fill a niche on my team, but they also evolved from Seedot, which were much easier to obtain than Nuzleaf. Although I did want this Nuzleaf, I figured I'd do the smart thing and turn it down.

"Nah, let's try to escape, but if it follows then let's throw it a Pokedoll." I responded.

I slipped the Pokeplayer out of my pocket and pressed play, already having the Cottonee Voice Disk in and ready to go.

Ed considered the Pokemon for a few seconds before responding. “Nah, let’s try to escape, but if it follows then let’s throw it a Pokedoll.”

I nodded in understanding. Unless it was a really rare or powerful Pokemon, most people tended to want to catch the basic Pokemon instead of the fully evolved ones. This was for a couple of reasons, but I usually did it myself.

I looked at the Nuzleaf. “Mind moving along? He’s not interested.”

The Nuzleaf stared Ed down, but snorted in disgust when the trainer made no move to battle it. It gave us both one last glare before darting off into the bushes, no doubt to go pick a fight elsewhere.

“Come on, let’s see what else we can find,” I said to Ed as he plugged in his player and began to play a disk.

Since this place was a diverse environment for Pokemon I decided we should head to the fruit gardens, a place that abounded with wild fruits and vegetables. It was in the afternoon so I was hoping to find a couple of Pokemon lounging around. We hadn’t gone that far from the gate when I spotted a small Buneary bouncing among a flower bed, making sure to sniff each in time.

I pointed out the Pokemon to Ed, it was my experience that people liked it because of its Klutz ability, making it a handy Pokemon to use Switcheroo with.

"Mind moving along? He’s not interested.” Gaius said to the Nuzleaf.

The Pokemon continued to stare at me, seemingly in an attempt to provoke me. But when it got no reaction, it gave a snobby snort and one final glare before darting off into the bushes.

“Come on, let’s see what else we can find,” The ranger said to me.

I followed my ranger, and I began to see several fruit trees and bushes. This must be the fruit gardens, I had read about these in a brochure.

I was enjoying the scenery when Gaius nudged me and pointed to a small brown Pokemon, Buneary.

I sighed and began to think deeply. Lopunny was capable of the tricky Klutz/Switcheroo technique, and could utilize one of my favorite moves, Encore. But aside from that, there wasn't much else that it could do. I've battled a few Lopunny in my time, and none had been that much of a threat to me. Not only that, but I just didn't have the desire to battle this thing. I came here for team members, and while this was most likely a bad decision, I was going to have to turn down the Buneary.

"Let's just try to walk past it. If it follows, toss it a doll." I said to Gaius as I pressed play on my Pokeplayer once again.

Ed sighed and stared at the Pokemon intently, no doubt thinking whether it would be worth it to add to his team. After a moment of thought he spoke up. “Let’s just try to walk past it. If it follows, toss it a doll,” Ed said, returning his attention to the Pokeplayer.

I nodded at his request and began to walk down the path towards the frolicking rabbit-like Pokemon. As we got closer I noticed its ears started to twitch in our direction, never a good side. Once it thought we had approached enough it bounced over. It started to spin in place, showing us all the flowers it was collecting. I tried to lead us past it, but the small Pokemon kept blocking out path until finally I took a doll from Ed and gave it to the Pokemon. All thoughts of the flowers gone, the Buneary seized the doll and bounced off.

“Come on,” I said to Ed once the Pokemon was gone.

As we started to walk through the fruit garden I noticed that we couldn’t fine any Pokemon. I thought we were for sure being followed, but every time I looked back I saw nothing. That was until I saw a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. I turned in the direction, but didn’t see anything at a first glance. But when I glanced over the area again I spotted a Pokemon.

“There’s a Cacturne over there. Want that?”

We attempted to walk around the small Normal-type, but it kept frolicking around in our way. More so for attention then to battle. But naturally, Gaius had to use a Pokedoll to get it away from us. I didn't mind spending Pokedolls, the 500 dollars was well worth saving time in the park.

We walked through the fruit garden for a while, not seeing any Pokemon. Gaius was acting a bit weird, looking behind him a lot, until he snapped his neck to some trees and did a double take.

“There’s a Cacturne over there. Want that?” Gaius asked.

I followed where he was pointing to and looked at the odd cactus-like Pokemon hiding in the trees. This one required much less thought then the last two, and I shook my head no, preparing to pay up the 500 dollars if we weren't able to get around it. With my free hand, I pressed play on the Cottonee Voice Disk once again.

Ed shook his head at the Dark and Grass type before pulling a fistfull of cash just incase he needed to buy a Pokedoll. I reached into my bag and pulled out a Pokedoll as the wild Pokemon edged closer to us. Once I could clearly see its yellow eyes I swapped the money for the doll.

Once Ed had the doll he tossed it at Cacturne and we continued forward. With the Cacturne distracted I decided we should leave this section of the gardens, as we hadn’t found anything the trainer was looking for.

A few minutes later we were almost out when I heard a soft snoring sound from behind a tree. I placed a fingers to my lips in a quiet motion and sneaked over. What I saw surprised me, it was a full grown Kangaskhan taking a nap.

They were pretty rare. I pointed it out to Ed.

I tossed a doll to the cactus like Pokemon and we continued on our way.

We began to head out of the fruit garden, but just before we exited we heard a faint snoring noise. Gaius stopped me and made a shushing motion with his finger and lips. We sneaked over to see, shockingly, the very rare Kangaskhan.

I adored Kangaskhan, but I already was in possession of one, and didn't find a need for another.

I shook my head no and pressed play on the voice player, also taking out $500 for a doll in case we woke the sleeping beast.

Ed didn’t want this guy either, he simply shook his head and pressed the button on his player to make it place once again. Sadly this sound woke up the sleeping giant, who grumbled his displeasure and strolled over, not at all happy to see us.

I made a placating gesture, but the Pokemon didn’t seem to care and narrowed the distance between. I felt something in my hand and saw that it was a small bundle of cash. I jammed the dough in a pocket and gave Ed another Pokedoll. He quickly passed the doll off to the Kangaskhan, whose eyes focused on the doll.

The giant Normal Pokemon snatched the doll away and retreated back to its spot. I sighed with relief and pointed at the direction I wanted to take. Ed nodded and trailed after me as I followed a path through the underbush.

After a few minutes we came across a purplish Pokemon that looked like a plant with a bulb and two legs. It was an Oddish, a common Pokemon in this section of the Park.

I forked over a few hundred bucks to Gaius in return for a Pokedoll. I nervously tossed the doll to the Normal-type, wanting to avoid confrontation.. Fortunately for us, it took the doll and retreated. We continued to travel through the underbush, when we nearly tripped over a tiny purple Pokemon with no arms. It was an Oddish, a Pokemon native to my home region of Kanto. Gaius looked at me and I shook my head no.

"Same deal, see if we can get away, if not; doll." I said to Gaius as I pressed play on my Pokeplayer disk.

Ed shook his head no and pressed play on his player, sending the Cottonee voice out once more. “Same deal, see if we can get away, if not; doll.”

I pulled Ed into the underbrush and tried to follow a different path away from the Oddish, but the Grass Pokemon wasn’t having it and followed. I checked back a couple of times, but it was always there. After a few minutes of playing tag with the Pokemon I grabbed some money from Ed and placed a doll behind us. This time the Oddish left us alone as it scrambled after the plush toy.

I pointed out a thick grove of trees I wanted to explore and had Ed follow me over there. Soon as we entered the wooded area I spotted a Pokemon swinging from a tree. It was an Ivysaur using its vines to swing from tree to tree. It was a game I had never seen before.

I pointed the Pokemon out to Ed and waited for his response. I was guessing he would say no to capturing the Pokemon, but one could never know, I thought he would try ot catch the Buneary and Kangaskhan, but he hadn’t so I didn’t know what his next move would be.

We tried to navigate our way around the Oddish, but with no luck. I forked over five hundred bucks and we tossed a doll at the small purple Pokemon.

This being my final use of the Cottonee Voice Disk, I was hoping I'd get a shot of good luck. Unfortunately, that hope vanished when we spotted an Ivysaur using its vines to playfully swing from the trees.

I sighed. "You know the drill." I said with a defeated voice and my head, getting my money prepared while also inserting the Shroomish Voice Disk and pressing play.

Just like before, Ed wasn’t happy with the Ivysaur. “You know the drill.” He pulled the disc of Cottonee from his player and plugged in a new one. This time the sound of a Shroomish filled the area.

I was waiting to see what the Ivysaur would do when it continued to swing along the branches. In only a few seconds the Pokemon disappeared from view. Ed was lucky this time around, he didn’t need to spend more money on another doll. The Ivysaur wasn’t interested in us.

I heard a rustling in a tree next to us and turned to it, expecting a Shroomish from the voice disc that Ed was playing. Unfortunately it only turned out to be a small Sentret, curious about the noise is climbed down the tree and scurried over to us, its nose and ears twitching.

“A long shot, what about him?” This was turning out to be a bad run as Ed hadn’t caught anything yet, and I was hoping he would at least try catching something so this run wouldn’t be a total waste of time for him.

    @AmericanTreeFrog;

Luckily, we were able to escape from the Ivysaur.

As soon as the Ivysaur left the scene, we heard a rustling in a nearby tree. Hoping it'd be a Shroomish, I crossed my fingers. Sure enough, it wasn't. It was a Sentret.

“A long shot, what about him?” Gaius asked me.

I just lowered my head and shook it no, pressing play on my Pokeplayer once again.

Ed barely gave the Pokemon a glance before turning his attention back to his player and pressing the play button, sending a clear voice of a Shroomish once more back out into the woods.

The Sentret cocked its ears at us and scurried closer, wanting to get a look at the player. I knew that as the Pokemon got closer that it wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. Ed and I reached for our packs simultaneously, me to get a doll and him to get some cash from his wallet.

We exchanged the items and he gave the doll to Sentret, who clutched it in its small paws and ran up a tree away from us. I pointed down a path I wanted to explore and headed down it, my destination a ranger cabin a short distance from here. This area of the park hadn’t been good for us, but hopefully a new area would be.

We walked on for seventeen minutes when I finally spotted the cabin. What caught my attention though was a Vileplume exploring some flowers nearby. I doubted that Ed would want to capture a Vileplume, but it was my job to make sure of everything.

I dutifully pointed the Pokemon out to Ed and waited for his response.

The Sentret scurried closer to us as I turned my Pokeplayer back on, obviously curious. Clearly not wanting to leave, I already knew what was coming. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a pre-rolled wad of cash containing $500, as Gaius grabbed a Pokedoll from his bag and handed it to me. I tossed the doll off into the trees and the Sentret raced after it.

We hadn't had any luck in this area, so I was glad that we got a solid 20 minutes of walking in before arriving at a cabin. Gaius stopped and was focusing on something. I followed his eyes to see a Vileplume poking around in some flowers.

I sighed, and at this point wish I had captured that Oddish. And that Buneary. But, hindsight is 20/20.

Gaius pointed out the Vileplume, but I simply shook my head no and reached for my Pokeplayer once again, playing the Shroomish Disk.

Ed was looking more dejected by the moment. He hadn’t found any Pokemon that he wanted, plus, his disks weren’t attracting the Pokemon he wanted. Disks didn’t work that often, I had only seen one work once during my tenure as a ranger. I knew a few others had only seen it a few times also, so I wasn’t that surprised. I personally didn’t use them because I didn’t believe it to be cost-effective, and I was all about saving money.

I usually hoarded my money until I had enough to go on a spending spree for one of my Pokemon. I knew a few other trainers did that as well so they had the extra cash if they needed it. I couldn’t remember if Ed was like that, we didn’t really run in the same circles.

Luckily for Ed though, the Vileplume was more interested in the flowers than us and left us alone. When we reached the cabin I unlocked it and ushered Ed inside. I had just placed my pack on the table when I heard a scratching sound coming from a cabinet. I went over to it and opened it to see a Sentret digging around the food stores trying to find something to eat.

It was startled by me and jumped down. It landed on the table and started to look for an escape, clearly concerned about being trapped in a room with two humans. “Since I’m pretty sure you don’t want a Sentret still, try opening the window behind you. Maybe it will leave,” I said to Ed softly, not wanting to goad the Pokemon into a battle.

Luckily, I didn't need the Pokedoll. The Vileplume didn't pay us any mind as it continued to poke around the flowers. When we made our way to the cabin, Gaius opened the door and ushered me inside. I was glad I would get to rest for a second. This was my second Park Run today, so I was feeling pretty beat.

I plopped down on the couch right before we heard a scratching noise coming from one of the cabinets. Gaius went over to the Cabinet and opened it, revealing a Sentret. The Sentret freaked and leaped out of the cabinet.

“Since I’m pretty sure you don’t want a Sentret still, try opening the window behind you. Maybe it will leave." Gaius said to me. I sprung up from the couch and popped open a window, hoping the damn thing would leave. I prepared to fork up $500, as well as press the play button on the Pokeplayer.
