    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

“He's going to use Shadow Claw, I think,” Alaska said, though she had been quiet for several moments. She was probably talking with her Pokémon through their link, and Ivy couldn't get off the thought that the skill was really useful. Making strategy in silence would be super beneficial against other opponents since they would have no clue what was coming.

It was interesting to watch at least. Ivy wondered if Alaska knew she didn't have to call out her attacks if she didn't want to. She was fairly certain the Baltoy couldn't hear them, but one never knew.

Erebos' claws began to shimmer as a dark aura formed around them. He wasted no time in leaping towards the Baltoy, nearing the rock side and the pit the Ground type had made.

The ground doll twisted itself back and forth, like it was digging itself even deeper into the ground. It didn't look worried about the incoming attack at all, perhaps because it had boosted defenses. It paused, waiting for the incoming ghost. Erebos came sailing at it with a vicious swipe, and at that second, Baltoy turned into a rapid spin.

The doll was a half second too late to time it perfectly, so the Sableye managed to scratch it lightly before Baltoy began its assault. Mud slung up in all directions as it spun, sending out sopping dirt wherever it could reach. It slapped Erebos on his face and body, sending him flying backwards as he frantically tried to remove the mud from his sight.

“Gah!” Ivy yelled as she backed up rapidly, just avoiding some of the onslaught. The dirt was gooey, and she was pretty sure she'd have an interesting time trying to explain that one to the guys back at the office. It reminded her of the time Leo had started a water fight in the main work area just so he could see the secretaries in dripping clothes.

Baltoy must've hit a water vein as he dug into the ground, a natural well that surfaced pretty high in many places in the Valley. It was raining goop, making it hard for anything to get near it. Erebos was having a hard time with it too, and if he couldn't see that well, Baltoy would be that much harder to battle.

Ivy hoped Alaska would think of something soon.

Mud was flying in every direction and some had already splattered on me, Ivy, Erebos, and even Glaurung. The big Dragonite just blinked in confusion before attempting to lick it off. He stuck his tongue out and moaned, "Niiiiiiite."

"Glaurung, that's dirt, not chocolate. I'll help you wash off later."

    "Niiite." He agreed.

I turned to Erebos. (Alright, what do you want to do? We've got to think of a way to avoid all the mud....Hmmm....I think I have an idea. Play dead so the Baltoy comes over to you, then use Faint Attack, and before he realizes whats happening, hit him with another Shadow Claw. Does that sound good?)

(It sssseemsss like it sssshould work.)

(Awesome. And be careful not to hurt it too badly. Remember, were trying to capture it.)

    (I will be careful, masssster.)

Just then, Erebos was once again slapped with mud. He fell to the ground dramatically and stayed completely still.

    (Don't overdo it.)

He winked so only I could see. The Baltoy looked at him curiously and seemed like it wanted to check him out.

    ---

Alaska's Dragonite didn't quite move fast enough to not get splattered, and to Ivy's surprise, he attempted to lick it off, moaning when he discovered the taste. The Ranger just blinked, wondering how slow Glaurung really was. Alaska promised to help wash the dirt of later, and the dragon seemed to be satisfied.

The Trainer turned her attention back to Erebos, and they stood looking at each other for another period of silence. Ivy was pretty used to it by now, but it was still weird. They came up with some sort of plan because Erebos returned to the field and headed towards the hole Baltoy had dug.

Mud was still slinging about, and the ghost was hit again. He made a dramatic movement and then fell to the ground in a huff, kicking up a little dust as he went down. Ivy was puzzled, but Erebos looked mostly fine. He couldn't have been knocked out that easily, so it must've been part of whatever Alaska was doing.

The mud rain stopped shortly after, and the doll peeked out from its trench in the ground. It was looking at Erebos curiously, even getting up out of the hole. It wobbled closer, its pieces clacking quietly as it moved. It looked a little concerned, like it hadn't meant to really hurt the ghost. It seemed pretty mellow in temperament, so that was fitting.

Erebos was pretty brave to stay shock still while the Baltoy loomed over him. Though she was pretty sure Haxbat enjoyed playing tricks on people too, this was just a little too helpless for her. She didn't trust any wild Pokémon to be that close. Her brother had a run in like that when he had gotten too close to a seemingly docile Skitty. It had clawed his face, and one of the slashes across his nose didn't fade away over time.

The ghost was perfectly still as the doll leaned close, a curious look on his face. Then, Erebos snapped his eyes open, and he blurred out and back in as he struck the Ground type rapidly.

The Baltoy made a surprised sound as it was knocked backwards. As it tried to get up, Erebos wasted no time slashing out at it, his claws glowing with that ghastly energy again as he performed another Shadow Claw. Baltoy was in the process of righting himself as the ghost's attack knocked him down again.

The doll was certainly not amused, and it kicked up a mini whirlwind of sand as it skidded backwards with another surprised cry. It caught Erebos inside of it, and Ivy could hear his unhappy mutters as the sand bit into his skin as it whipped around him. It faded shortly, and the Ranger took her eyes back to the wild Pokémon.

Baltoy twirled like a top as it rushed backwards, and it only stopped as it hit the rock side with a heavy thump. Small bits of rocks and dirt fell down when it hit, but the Pokémon ignored the pieces that landed on it. It shook for a moment, and Ivy cringed in reflex. It steadied itself soon after, and it seemed to glow with an otherworldly energy as it focused.

Ivy was relieved. She knew one of their moves allowed it to basically explode to damage an opponent while knocking themselves out for a while in the process. She didn't want Alaska to miss her chance to catch this one from an accidental setting it off. It had been known to happen.

The Ranger looked over to Alaska to see what she would do next.

Erebos managed to pull off his attack flawlessly. I sent my approval towards him through our mind link. However, right after that, Baltoy began to stir up trouble. As Erebos was enveloped by thousands of grains of sand, I had time for only one thought: Shiiiiiit. Then I was sucked up into Erebos' mind. I felt my normal body collapse.

    Flashback

Sand, sand, everywhere, in my eyes, in my ears, it burned, everywhere. Where was anyone or anything? I didn't know, don't know now, just sand, choking me, blinding me, making me helpless. Where are you? Nobody is there, just heat and sand. I can't....can't breathe. Light! Above me I can see it.

In the memory, Erebos attempted to claw his way up and out of the sand, but to no avail. He merely sunk farther in.

No, no, no, no. Air! There is nothing but sand, nothing but thousands of tiny grains trying to kill me! THERE! WHAT IS THAT!?

Something shot down through the sand, right next to where Erebos was flailing. It was a human hand. Erebos looked reluctant for about a split second, before grabbing the hand in both of his and clinging on.

    End Flashback

My awareness of my own body came back and as it did, I noticed Erebos was now actually clinging to me.

(Come on, Erebos, you need to get up.)

(Yesssss, massster.) He whispered, but made no move to do what I had asked. Ivy was looking expectantly at us to see what we do.

(We can talk later, Erebos, but right now that Baltoy looks like it's going to pull a Hindenburg preeeetty quickly.)

    (Hindenberg?)

(Never mind. How about using Leer and following it up with another Shadow Claw?) As I said the words, I comforted Erebos mentally. His eyes seemed to glow a little more and he jumped right up.

    (Yessss, massster.)

He turned to stare at the little brown top Pokemon and his eyes glowed brighter and brighter.....

"DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY INTO HIS EYES!" I yelled at Ivy. The last time someone did that I had to go take the Ark of the Covenant into a government warehouse after cleaning up melted Nazis. Wait....

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

When Ivy looked at Alaska, she seemed to be out of it, her eyes blurring as she saw something that nobody else could see. Ivy glanced at Erebos, wondering if something was up with him. He seemed to really hate the sand, and as she watched, he was crawling backwards, trying to get away from it.

The sand stopped whirling, and then Erebos wasted no time in running back to his Trainer. He curled up into a ball at her feet, clutching one of her legs for dear life. He looked a little scared, and Ivy felt a little bad. At least he seemed somewhat comforted by Alaska. Haxbat made a soft sound from behind her shoulder, looking at the ghost too. Even though they had started out rough, there was still compassion there for bad memories.

There was silence for a moment, and then Erebos got up, looking better than he had. Ivy hoped that whatever Alaska told him would chase away that haunted look. His pointed ears stood up as he glanced back at the battle, and she caught a glimpse his crystal cut eyes as they started to glow brightly...

“DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY INTO HIS EYES!” Alaska shouted, and Ivy made sure to look away immediately. Instead, she looked toward the Baltoy and how it was reacting.

The ground doll seemed to be caught up in Erebos' gaze. It started to tremble, like whatever it saw in Erebos' eyes brought up bad memories. Absently, Ivy wondered if the ghost considered it revenge.

Baltoy suddenly jerked backwards, hitting the cliff side with a bang. It did this a few more times as Erebos released the gaze and darted forward, his claws glowing with that same ghastly energy as before. It seemed to be working, and since it was a natural move, it was a good move to call.

Baltoy hit the wall again, still trying to come to its senses, and more dirt fell down, followed by several smaller rocks. As the ghost neared it, Erebos struck, raking its claws along the doll's body. It knocked the Baltoy back again, and this time, larger rocks shook loose from the wall.

Erebos looked surprised as he tried to get out of the way. He dodged to the side, and a larger rock glanced off his shoulder. He tried to back up, but the same stone that hit him suddenly looped behind him, and he hit it with a thunk.

Looking at the Baltoy, it seemed its eyes were glowing, and Ivy flinched as she saw it was using its psychic powers to control the stones. It was trying to trap the ghost with rocks. If she recalled correctly, it could learn several attacks like this. She hoped Alaska could work them out of this one.

Luckily, Ivy looked away before Erebos started his Leer attack. My Sableye's eyes began to glow demonically as he locked eyes with the poor Baltoy. The ground Pokemon shivered and appeared to be having some sort of hallucination. The Baltoy began to jerk backwards, hitting the cliff wall over and over. It was like something out of The Exorcist.

For a moment, the Baltoy sat completely still, obviously dazed. Erebos leaped forward and began to scratch the Clay Doll Pokemon violently. To finish, he slapped his opponent violently, causing it to slam into the wall again. To Erebos' surprise, this caused a small rock slide. He jumped out of the way and only a few small rocks hit him. Unfortunately, the rock slide seemed to give Baltoy an idea.

Baltoy's eyes began glowing a deep purple, similar to how Erebos' had been a few moments previously. The psychic energy in the air was almost palpable and I watched with some apprehension as Baltoy lifted up a few boulders, preparing to hurl them at Erebos.

(Masssssster?) He was waiting for my instructions.

Hmmm....I would have to think quickly to help him avoid the attack. (Quick! Use Detect and then Scratch! Baltoy seems pretty weak already, so be careful not to hurt it. Concentrate on dodging those boulders.)

    (Yessss, massster.)

Erebos seemed to almost collapse into the lotus position. He sat perfectly skill and the red jewel in the center of his chest began to pulse. His diamond-like eyes seemed to go dark. The odd ripples that seemed to pass through the air grew stronger, as the two powerful Pokemon began to have a battle of mental power.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Erebos paused, probably waiting for Alaska to give him an order. They were quiet still, so the Ranger assumed more mental talking was being done. Even so, she hoped they hurried up. Baltoy had launched the rocks at the ghost, and they were speeding towards Erebos with a boost from Baltoy's psychic powers.

The ghost suddenly became more alert as he melted into a meditating-like position. He crossed his legs and seemed to hover slightly above the ground as he focused. He had his eyes sharply fixed on the rocks heading his way as the jewel on his chest began to pulse as he used energy.

The Baltoy saw this too, and it seemed to put more energy into what it was doing. It focused as well, and the air gained that thick quality to it that happened when a lot of psychic stuff was going on. The doll guided his rocks towards the ghost with more fervor, but Erebos didn't seem worried.

Right before the first one was about to it, Erebos suddenly wasn't there, appearing instead above it as it sailed harmlessly past. Two more rocks followed, but the ghost dodged these easily as well. Then, Erebos lunged into action, reaching to swipe at the doll. His claws weren't glowing this time, so Ivy figured that Alaska had told him to power down his moves. It was probably a good call; the battle had been going on for a while and Baltoy might be tiring out.

Erebos went to strike, and then the Baltoy was suddenly not there. The ghost looked around puzzled for a second before looking up, seeing the ground Pokémon hovering in the air, much like he had just done to the rocks. The doll must have watched Erebos closely to mimic what he had done. Ivy made a mental note, impressed on how well wild Pokémon could improvise.

Baltoy spun in the air once before pushing itself backwards, probably with its mental powers. It floated gently backwards and down, putting its back to the cliff wall again. It seemed to go calm after that, like it was clearing its mind. It was probably going to make it more powered up for battle.

“Careful, Alaska, it looks like its boosting its power more.”

OOC: Sorry this took a while.

Erebos leaped toward the Baltoy, but unfortunately, his razor sharp claws went through nothing but air. Baltoy had managed to avoid his attack.

(It must have Mimicked your Detect.) I told Erebos.

Erebos grunted in frustration and fled back to my side. The Baltoy was now spinning in circles. It suddenly stopped and I felt a wave of psychic energy spread out across the field.

(I don't think much more battling will do us any good. We're going to have to try to link with it.)

(Issss that a good idea, massster?)

(I don't see many other options. It's boosted its special attack and special defense now. It would be more dangerous to continue battling. Start forming the link.)

    (Yessss, massster.)

If the psychic energy from Baltoy's Calm Mind had been a wave, this was a tsunami. The air around me seemed to crackle, almost as if there were an approaching thunderstorm, but the skies overhead were clear. The two Pokemon seemed to lock eyes and I felt myself being drawn into Erebos' body. At first I freaked out instinctively, but then I forced myself to be calm and let it happen.

Being sucked into Erebos was always an unsettling experience. First of all, I could see myself, and I looked basically like a zombie. My body had crumpled onto the ground, like a shed snake skin. I noticed all the scratches I had accumulated from my hike through the park. The newer scratches had stopped bleeding, indicating my pulse had stopped. Worst of all though, were my eyes: they had turned bloodshot and only the whites were visible. Aside from seeing my empty husk of a body, I was also forced into the back of Erebos' mind, a disturbing place to be. I tried to focus on helping to create the Bond, rather than Erebos fragmented memories.

The Bond is something that all Psychic, Dark, and Ghost Pokemon share with their trainers. It allows them to share thoughts, memories, feelings, and with practice, to shelter in each other's bodies. The only way I was catching this Baltoy now, was to try to create a Bond with it.

I felt a tingling, almost burning sensation as Erebos forced me from his body, through the river of psychic energy that connected the two Pokemon, and into the Baltoy.

(Hello.) I said as casually as I could given the situation.

(ACK! Human...my mind....how?) I felt it's panic at my presence. Panic and....fear. This was not a Pokemon that had a good relationship with humans.

(Shhh...I won't hurt you. I promise.) I tried to convey warmth and love. Safety. I felt him calm down a little bit.

    (Human? What are you doing?)

(I want to capture you.) I told him.

(That's all? I was afraid of the jewel-eye-dark-shadow-Pokemon. All Dark Pokemon scare me.)

(We won't hurt you. Will you come with me? I can't battle you anymore without risking my own Pokemon being hurt.)

    (Well....alright, I suppose.)

I smiled inwardly and pulled out of its body. There was a scary moment where i was floating in space, but then I was sucked back into my own human form. As I came back to my senses, the Baltoy floated up to me.

"Hey there, Baltoy," I said out loud. "We've come to an agreement," I told Ivy. She looked just a little freaked out. Only a little.

I reached into my pack, pulled out a Pokeball and held it out.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Alaska looked a little worried as she saw Baltoy boost its stats. Erebos was a little scratched up, and Ivy knew she probably didn't want him to get too hurt. There were other ways to catch Pokémon here other than just fighting, but it was tricky. The choice was ultimately up to the Trainer on what she would do.

Alaska was quiet for a moment, and then the Ranger felt it. Baltoy had caused a pulling sensation as it used its psychic powers, but this was like a tidal wave. Erebos was working his power again for something, and she felt like she was drowning. She struggled to keep her eyes from flinching as she heard Haxbat screech at the magic in the air.

Ivy looked over to Alaska and her eyes widened. In the last few seconds, the Trainer's body had crumpled to the ground like a rag doll. Her skin was pale and her eyes bloodshot. The only thing she could think of was that they were doing the possessing thing again, only in reverse. But why...?

Then, she heard something, and it had her looking around wildly. Threat to my Trainer...

The pressure in the air didn't stop, and it was hard to think. At first the Ranger thought she'd just imagined it, but then the voice was there again. Must stop it...

It felt familiar, yet she was sure she had never heart it before. She looked to Erebos, but there was nothing. He was focused on the Baltoy, who had come closer to the ghost. Her eyes drifted to Haxbat then, and something about the idea clicked. She could only stare in shock. The major amounts of psychic energy must've been affecting everyone in the area. It was so intense that she was feeling her Crobat's thoughts.

She had always envied Psychic Pokémon users for their connection to their partners. With just a thought they could communicate and understand each other better than some others who had been together for years. In that moment, she knew what that was like. She could feel the emotion behind the words and understand the commitment behind wanting to protect her. It left her with no words.

Power surged again, only it took the pressure with it as it ebbed. The Ranger almost didn't notice, eyes still stuck on the flying bat, but Alaska spoke.

“Hey there, Baltoy,” she said. She then directed her next comment to Ivy, and the Rangers eyes snapped over to the Trainer. She could only imagine what kind of shocked look was still plastered to her face.

“We've come to an agreement,” she continued, reaching into her pack and pulling out a standard Parkball. She held it out towards the Baltoy in question, and the doll only hesitated briefly before moving forward and gently tapping the ball.

Red light engulfed it as it was sucked inside the device, and it fell to the dirt with a soft plop. It wriggled for a second before going still, and the resounding ping was loud in the new silence.

The sound brought Ivy out of her shocked state, and she shook her head to clear it further. She'd have to think about what had happened later. She had a job to do now.

“Congratulations!” she called, smiling at the Trainer. She was happy to see she looked better than that lifeless husk had been, though she did have a few scratches she must've gotten from their path through the trees. “I'm not exactly sure what you did at the end there, but whatever it was, it worked. I”ll hang onto it for now, and then you can decide what Pokémon you're taking with you when we've finished your run.”

Ivy reached down and pocketed the ball into her vest pocket. By focusing on her job, she could avoid thinking too much, she decided. She turned toward Alaska. “So, would you like a rest or are you ready to move on?”

I breathed a sigh of relief as the Pokeball snapped closed and made a small pinging sound. The Baltoy was mine.

“Congratulations!” Ivy called, smiling at me, "I'm not exactly sure what you did at the end there, but whatever it was, it worked. I'll hang onto it for now, and then you can decide what Pokémon you're taking with you when we've finished your run.”

    "Awesome," I replied.

Ivy reached down and pocketed the ball into her vest pocket. “So, would you like a rest or are you ready to move on?”

I glanced over at Erebos, who seemed tired, but mostly fine, and Glaurung, who was just being himself, trying to start a game of tag with Haxbat. "I think we can start heading towards the caves. Could you help me keep an eye on Erebos though? Erm. Weird...things tend to happen around him and now he's injured. Also, it'll be hard to keep him in sight in the cave, so yeah....I'll try to use Glaurung against whatever we come across." Glaurung perked up at the mention of his name and lazily floated over. He shoved his head in my backpack and came up with a mouthful of saltine crackers. I facepalmed. "Those were for later....Oh well." I stared expectantly at Ivy, waiting for her to lead the way.

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Alaska took in the state of her Pokémon before answering the Ranger's question. Erebos looked a little tired, but he wasn't too scratched up. Glaurung hadn't seen any battle time yet, so he was okay. The dragon was trying to start a game of tag with Haxbat, however, but the bat was just ignoring him.

The Trainer asked Ivy's help in looking after Erebos, saying that strange things happened around him. The Ranger could agree with that. The idea of him being hard to keep track of in the caves was a good point though, so Ivy nodded.

Glaurung floated over to her and started rummaging in her bag, ending up finding some snacks. Alaska facepalmed, saying that they were supposed to be for later. Ivy laughed and turned back towards the rocks.

The entrance to one of the tunnels was close, and the Ranger could almost feel the ghost's excitement as the team traveled. Suddenly, a light clacking of a rock made her still. Haxbat swooped in next to her, peering at the cave entrance. The inky blackness covered up what was lurking, but between her own senses and those of her bat, she knew something was there.

Then the creature stepped out into the light partly, giving off a quiet growl. The hyena-looking Pokémon was a Mightyena. It was mostly gray with a black fur top and legs. It's red eyes stared flatly at them. Ivy let out a puff of air.

“Well, there's a Mightyena. They usually travel in packs, which makes me think there might be more nearby. Would you like to try to catch this one or would you like to see if we can get around it? It's kinda blocking our way into the caves.” She scratched her head, thinking of some way to get around this. “Let's just hope there aren't more.”

As we approached the gaping mouth of the cave, I heard something like rocks clattering. My head snapped up and I noticed Ivy and Haxbat were paying close attention too. Slowly but surely, a dark shape stepped out of the cave. It was a gray and black wolf-like Pokemon with glowing red eyes. It was...Mightyena.

Ivy looked relieved.

"Well...." I said, "I don't want to battle this, since I already have a Mightyena and Erebos is tired, but we need to get in that cave."

    (Precioussss) I heard Erebos moan.

"Hmmm....I've got an idea!" I quickly ran over to a small clump of trees and searched the ground. Finally, I found my weapon. I ran back towards the Mightyena. "Here, boy!" I yelled and whistled. The Mightyena looked up at me and growled, but he stopped when he saw what I held in my hand. "You want the stick, boy? You want it?" I waved it back and forth. I threw it and the Mightyena followed it with his eyes. I could see him struggling not to chase it....

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Alaska said that she already had a Mightyena and didn't really want to battle this one since Erebos was hurt. They still wanted to get to the cave though, so they were going to have to think of some way around this. Ivy had a feeling that Alaska was spurred on by the ghost's excitement.

“Hmm...I've got an idea!” the Trainer suddenly said. She ran back to the tree line and shuffled around the debris on the ground. When she returned, she had a decent sized throwing stick in hand. She whistled, and the Mightyena perked his ears up and growled lowly as he looked at her. His eyes were alert though, and they followed every jostle of the stick.

Alaska threw the branch, and Ivy saw him start but catch himself. He had almost darted off after it. He got a hold of himself though and turned back towards the humans with another growl. It looked like he wasn't going to give up guarding the cave entrance.

Ivy sighed. “Well, what do you want to do now?” She rummaged in her cargos, double checking her dolls again. “Oh, it looks like I have a few more dolls than I thought, if you wanted to use one. Just let me know.”

I sighed as well. "That might be a good idea." I fished in my pocket for some loose change and forked over the money.

Ivy handed me the Pokedoll, shaped like a little Clefairy, and I started shaking it in front of the Mightyena. "WHO'S GOT THE SQUEAKY?" I said, squeaking it. "YOU WANT THE SQUEAKY? WHO'S A GOOD BOY? WHO'S A GOOD BOY?" I threw the Pokedoll off in the distance and he ran after it. "Problem solved," I said with a wink. "Shall we carry on?"

    NBP#11

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Alaska sighed, seeing the dark dog not going anywhere. “That might be a good idea.” Ivy handed her a doll and made a mark on the tab, and the Trainer neared the Mightyena with it. She started shaking at it, and calling to it like one would do to a good house pet.

Mightyena was wild, but it still responded like a tame pet would. Almost against his will, his ears perked up and his sight focused on the doll she waved around. Alaska chucked the doll into the trees, and the dog shot off after it. Hopefully it wouldn't want to play fetch.

“Problem solved,” the Trainer said. “Shall we carry on?”

Ivy nodded, signalling for Haxbat to follow them as the neared the caves entrance. He hovered close above her, so she thought maybe he was still worked up from earlier when he thought she was in danger. He kept sneaking unhappy looks at Glaurung, and she wondered if he might be a little jealous too.

The Ranger waved the Trainer and her Pokémon into the caves while she stood near the entrance, keeping watch for any other wild Pokémon that might try to impede their progress again. The Mightyena didn't come back though, and there were no other visitors. She then turned to head into the caves herself, hoping Erebos wouldn't get too excited and run off alone or something. She couldn't let them get too far ahead. The dark of the cave started to mold around her as she stepped inside.

Then, there was a shaking. Haxbat screeched, and Ivy tried to steady herself as the ground and walls around them vibrated and rocked in place. She quickly searched for Alaska in the chaos, making it over to her and trying to grab a sleeve so she could keep track of the girl.

“Haxbat, Protect us, quickly!” Ivy called, and the Crobat wasted no time in throwing up a shimmering greenish shield above them just as a large chunk of rock fell down from the ceiling. Luckily it just bounced off to the ground instead of seriously injuring someone.

The group huddled under the Crobat's sheild until the shaking stopped, the dust and rocks falling making it hard to see anything. Ivy wasn't sure what the earthquake rate was at the Park yet as she hadn't been here that long, but she didn't remember anything warning her of frequent occurance.

When the terrible shaking finally stopped, there was just a single beam of light shining through the way they had come, lighting a small spot on the ground. Ivy stiffened. “Oh no,” she whispered, digging in one of her pockets to find a flashlight.

She got up to inspect the damage. The ground was littered with some debris, but it wasn't anything too bad. Alaska and her Pokémon all looked fine, and Haxbat chattered a little nervously somewhere above her. She walked back up to the entrance, and what she feared was true. The earthquake had caused the cave to collapse.

She silently panicked a little. It would be different if it was just her trapped in the cave, but she had a Trainer and her Pokémon to worry about. She tried not to let any of her worry show, though it was hard. She realized she had just gotten her and her Trainer into a very dangerous situation. On her first run.

She sighed. The only gap left in the rock was a little bigger than the size of her palm. She was fairly sure that between the two of them, they could've broken the barrier, but doing that in a cave was too dangerous to try. She didn't want it to fall in on them. She wouldn't risk the Trainer or any of their Pokémon.

She pulled out another Pokéball of hers, bringing it up to the gap. The red beam shot out of the rubble and into the valley proper, among the sand and sticks where they had been standing before. A medium sized purple monkey with two tails capped with hand-like appendages emerged. The Ambipom looked around curiously for a moment before seeing Ivy's hand waving from the hole in the rock. He quickly ran over, putting his face to the space, making worried sounds.

Ivy pacified him with what she hoped were soothing shushes. “It's alright, Ambipom. It's just a little cave in. We'll be fine.” She spoke with more confidence than she was feeling, but she was resolved to not show how worried she actually was. She didn't want to upset the Trainer. “I want you to go find Chainy. He's not on a run today and should just be hanging around the outpost. The cave needs to be unblocked. We're going to continue on through it. I can probably navigate alright, and there has to be a way out somewhere down the line. Got it?”

Ambipom nodded fiercely then darted off through the trees. Ivy hoped that he hurried. They coudln't stay here, as they'd eventually run out of air, so onward was the only choice. She turned back toward the inky darkness that was becoming easier to see through the more she sat in here and just stared, taking in the feeling of the cave. Help would come eventually if she couldn't get them out of this cave. At least Alaska would be fine.

Since she was new to becoming a Ranger, her equipment hadn't come in yet. Something had happened with the order, and it was being delayed about a week. Hence the reason why she didn't have a radio to call for help. She had faith in Ambipom though, and she was fairly certain Chainy would come help if he understood what the monkey was saying at all. At least she hoped.

Still, there was nothing else to do. She coudln't fall apart in front of her Trainer. How would she ever make it as a Ranger otherwise? Decided, she nodded to herself and started to walk forward, addressing the Trainer.

“Well, we might as well continue on. We're still on a run. We'll just look at this as a minor detour. No need to just stay-” She cut herself as a scuffling sound came from the darkness. Haxbat swept down next to her, chattering into the open space, wanting to know what was there and ready to intervene if necessary.

A dragging sound, like stone on stone, sounded again. Then again. Then, a gray rock appeared, and Ivy was a little puzzled at the moving rock before she felt the dark energy and saw the swirling colors. Through a crack in the rock a purple mist leaked out, tinted with green that eventually became green orbs that swirled around and around. The fuschia mist formed into a round head-like shape, and then freaky green eyes coupled with a jagged smile showed.

“A Spiritomb,” Ivy said, looking back at Alaska. “Any interest in this one? There's nothing to do but go forward.”

With the Mightyena finally out of the way, the entrance into the cave was clear. Ivy waved us into the cave and stopped for a moment, making sure the Mightyena wasn't coming back instead of eviscerating the stuffed Cleffa I had thrown for him. Luckily, the coast looked clear. As we walked a little deeper into the cave, Haxbat seemed to hover near Winter's head nervously. I vaguely wondered if his fluttering wings matched the heartbeat of my ranger. She was looking awfully nervous.

Suddenly, everything started shaking. "Gah," I said as the the walls around me started to move, "Everytime we're in the park it reminds me of the Tiajuana Incident." Erebos snickered, but Glaurung merely whined anxiously. As the cave shook around us, I gently pet his shoulder. "I know, buddy, no more tequila." I felt Ivy grab onto my sleeve as some rocks started falling.

“Haxbat, Protect us, quickly!” Ivy called, and the Crobat wasted no time in throwing up a shimmering greenish shield above them just as a large chunk of rock fell down from the ceiling. Luckily it just bounced off to the ground instead of seriously injuring someone.

We huddled under Haxbat's shield and watched the rocks fall around us, like rain, but less rainier, since rain was soft and wet and rocks were hard and sharp. I wondered how many earthquakes there were in the park. I suppose wild Pokemon could trigger them a lot. When the shaking stopped, Haxbat let his shield down. I looked around and saw that we had been caved in. A large percentage of the rocks that had been hanging from the ceiling were now piled in front of the door way, the only entrance that I knew of. A single ray of sunlight shone through a small opening near the top. A VERY small opening.

“Oh no,” Ivy whispered, digging in one of her pockets to find a flashlight. As Ivy checked out all the fallen debris and made sure her Pokemon were alright, I decided to check on my own guys.

I turned to Erebos and Glaurung. Erebos was making an odd bird-like sound and nervously grooming his claws. Glaurung was whimpering loudly, panic in his eyes. "Well," I announced, "We're pretty much boned." Erebos chittered somewhat hysterically, but Glaurung started to moan. "Ah crap, don't freak out, broham." Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Ivy release her Ambipom outside and whisper something to it. I couldn't hear what she said over my large Dragonite. "Come on, Dude," I muttered consolingly and started to rub him between the wings. Glaurung was something of a claustrophobic. I could rarely even get him to go in his Pokeball.

Ivy turned from her spot by what remained of the entrance and walked over to us.

Suddenly, I heard an awful sound, like nails on a chalkboard. Then, a dull grey rock appeared by Ivy's feet. Erebos cocked his head to the side and stared at it curiously. Then Erebos and Haxbat simultaneously started to hiss. I felt a sudden wave of dark energy hit me and I could do nothing but blink stupidly for a moment, surprised. "Wha...?" I said brilliantly. Then I noticed the purple and green mist that had formed around the rock and the glowing eyes in its center. A smile that made me recall an unfortunate mixture of Alice in Wonderland and bad acid appeared on its face. Glaurung's horrible moaning made the scene even eerier.

“A Spiritomb,” Ivy said, looking back at me. “Any interest in this one? There's nothing to do but go forward.”

"Dude," I started to say then stopped, trying to capture my thoughts. "That is fucking awesome." I looked at the Spiritomb thoughtfully before locking eyes with it. Its eyes started to pull me in and I caught a glimpse of raging fires and boiling seas before realizing it might take me a place I didn't want to go. I broke eye contact (with some difficulty) and crouched down next to it, looking at a point past its head instead. "Hey there, buddy," I said, "I'm gonna call you scruffy." I tried to pick up the rock, but failed, only managing to tumble backwards into Glaurung whose keening had reached an almost unbearable pitch. The Spiritomb made an odd screeching sound I recognized as laughter. "Coooooool." I turned to Ivy hopefully. "CAN I KEEP HIM?"

She continued to stare at me and I realized she couldn't hear me over Glaurung. Shit. There was only one way to calm down Glaurung when he got like this. "Heeeey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better." Glaurung's moans dropped a few decibels and I paused to take a breath, quickly murmuring to Ivy, "The 'tomb is with me and start singing 'Hey Jude'. If we stop, there's no hope." I turned back to Glaurung, a cheesy grin plastered on my face. "Hey Jude, don't be afraid...."

    NBP#12

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Alaska looked really pleased about the Spiritomb. She said something, but Ivy coudln't make it out because Glaurung had started an awful wailing that made her ears want to curl in on themselves. Training with Haxbat had made them more sensitive than they used to be, and thoughout the cave, every little sound echoed and bounced back into the air loudly.

The Trainer ducked down to the ghost, and it looked pleased to interact with her. She looked dazed for a moment, and Ivy was going to try and warn her about getting sucked into psychic visions, but the Trainer seemed to know what she was doing. She jerked herself out of it and then focused on a spot just behind the ghost.

Then Alaska tried to pick up the rock, only to fail and stumble back into her still crying dragon. The Spiritomb stones were super heavy, which made them all the more impressive for using energy in lugging them around. The ghost warped its face into a happy sort, and it moved its mouth in what Ivy supposed was a cackle, since she couldn't hear it.

The Trainer turned back to Ivy and said something else, but again the Ranger couldn't hear it over the wailing that had picked up his pitch. Now Ivy was a little worried. Glaurung didn't look that well at all, like he was about to panic. A rampaging dragon in such a small, confined space was not good news for them. Luckily, Alaska seemed to notice, and she started saying something to him.

The noice he was making lowered a few decibles, and Ivy could finally hear what Alaska was saying. She was signing softly. It was a song the Ranger had heard a few times from an older band. The Trainer quickly took a deep breath and murmured, “The Tomb is with me and start signing 'Hey Jude'. If we stop, there's no hope.”

Ivy decided not to question it. She didn't want to risk him freaking out in such a small space. It sounded like the Spiritomb was going to hang out with them for a while, and that was perfectly fine too. A Trainer didn't necessarily need to battle a Pokémon from the Park in order to capture it. She had heard of a few other creative ways. It wouldn't hurt to let it tag along for a while. Maybe if it saw Alaska capturing some other Pokémon it would like the idea and want to come with her too.

“Hey, Jude, don't be afraid. You were made to go out and get her...” she sang, and Haxbat got the idea and started chattering in rhythm with her. Even the Spiritomb hummed a bit, trying to help out. That was a good sign. Maybe it could help them navigate through the tunnels if Alaska asked it nicely.

OOC: Sorry this took three weeks. XD And Spiritomb is male.

Ivy and her Crobat had started singing 'Hey Jude' and luckily, it had worked. Glaurung had calmed down and I began to massage the spot on his back between his wings. He made an odd gurgling sound that I thought might indicate happiness. Then he drooled on me, so it may have actually indicated an excess of spit.

"Thank God that's over," I muttered, then turned to the Spiritomb. "Can you show us a way out of this cave?"

The Spiritomb paused for a moment to consider.

"If you do it I'll give you a Scooby Snack." The bribe didn't appear to be working. "Two Scooby Snacks? Three? What if I give you a name?"

    He cackled enthusiastically.

"Ooookay, how about....Commander Scooby. AND GLAURUNG CAN BE A GENERAL. AND Sergeant Pepper- I mean Erebos. Riiight. So how about those directions, Scoob?"

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

Thankfully, Glaurung calmed down from their singing, and Alaska took the time to rub the spot between his wings as he happily slobbered on her. Then, the Trainer tried to convince the ghost to help lead them out of the cave, something Ivy hoped for. The ghost seemed more compliant after Alaska gave him a name, calling him Commander Scooby. It was a little odd, but she supposed she wasn't the greatest namer either. The ghost happily bobbed up and down in agreement to giving them direction, seeming to use no energy as he lifted his stone up in the air as he rose, floating down the tunnel.

Ivy breathed a small, inaudible sigh of relief. She was not adverse to having help if she needed it. Hopefully this would help the ghost bond with Alaska too, since it looked like he was going to be tagging along with them for a while.

The Ranger and Trainer headed off after the ghost as he chanted and sang random things on the way, like campfire songs. Maybe he was inspired by their singing to the Dragonite. He weaved up and down, leading them down one path, then another. Ivy tried to keep track of which direction they were going using her compass, but some of the tunnels twisted and turned so much that she wasn't sure she was doing it right. She wished her equipment had come in before the run.

The tunnels weren't very spacious either, and though she wasn't claustrophobic, Glaurung and Haxbat were not small, so traveling wasn't exactly easy when everyone was bumping into each other. Eventually they came into a larger part of the tunnel where the ceiling arched above them, with stalactites dripping down and stalagmites spiraling up. The walls were widened, and the ground was littered with stones of all shapes and sizes.

They weaved around the rocks until Ivy felt a strange sensation in the air. She paused, thinking she heard a noise. She looked around, and Haxbat made a curious sound from behind her shoulder. A slight flickering drew her eyes to a far part of the cave, and the Crobat hissed. A strange call she couldn't place sounded again, and it moved from one side of the path to the other.

A small Pokémon soon made its appearance, cheekily peeking out behind one of the rocks jutting from the ceiling. A key shaped Pokémon bobbed up and down as it took in the sight of the group, it's one eye curling happily. It's body was a sleek black color, looking somewhat like it had tubes connecting in the shape of a 'q'.

“Hey, Alaska, it's an Unown. A Q, from that looks of it. It seems pretty pleasant. Do you want to try catching it?”

They were still on a run after all.
