Beginner RP: Dictator (Luck Gandor)

The Sylveon’s aim was true, her speed more than sufficient. Perhaps, if Budew were a different Pokémon, or the day were not quite so languorously pleasant, or if Lyra were less determined, the Tackle might not have hit home.

But all of these things were so, and Budew found itself unable to struggle to its feet quickly enough to get out of the way as Lyra, already looming above it, pounced down to pin the little rosebud Pokémon to the soft and loamy soil.

Reflexively falling back on its species’s natural defence mechanism, Budew let out a little plume of pink pollen with a sweet scent to it, which puffed directly into Lyra’s face; but the Sylveon was already inured to such things by having spent so many minutes in this meadow already, and the lethargy-inducing effect of the Sweet Scent was mostly wasted.

Lyra held the little rosebud Pokémon down under one paw, glancing back at Dictator as if to say, And now?

The immortal child gave a happy little jump when they realized Lyra had succeeded. Either they did not realize the narrow factor of the success, or they simply did not care. Either way, Dictator was excited, and drew a park ball from their belt, the same one they had drawn earlier in preparation for the Sentret. Only, this time, they hoped they would actually be able to catch the Pokemon they were after.

"Alright Lyra, step back!" They ordered. Lyra followed their order, removing her paw from the little bud Pokemon before stepping aside obediently. Her tail waved in the air, as did her feelers. She was obviously quite proud of herself, holding her head up high and half-closing her eyes.

Dictator threw the park ball in the direction of the Budew, hoping it would connect and they could add a new Pokemon to their team.

 

The Park Ball soared away from Dictator's fingers, to cross the intervening space and strike Budew— a direct hit!

Then, the moment of truth: the ball sucked the rosebud Pokémon up in a swirl of red light, and fell to the soft earth of the meadow. Stuck there, its twitches could barely be seen; but the ball was definitely shaking, as the Budew within sought to break free. It vibrated once... Twice...

CRACK-pshhhhhhh...

With a cracking noise, a pneumatic hiss and a burst of red light, Budew burst from the opening Park Ball and reappeared a short distance away! Unsure what just happened to it, but willing to continue the battle, Budew opened its tiny mouth and spat a stinging rain of projectiles the size and shape of watermelon seeds at Lyra, who weathered them with a slight wince.

And so, the battle continued; Budew wasn't finished quite yet.

Drat! A part of Dictator knew they should have waited a bit longer, but their excitement had gotten the better of them. They looked at Tella, afraid that the ranger was judging them -- if there was one thing they feared, it was being judged. They forced themselves to look back at Lyra, however, worry tugging at their heart when they realized she had been hit with the tiny seeds.

"Lyra! Are you alright?" Dictator called out across the meadow to their Pokemon.

Lyra squeaked out a soft "Sylveon!" In reply, apparently doing alright. She was a bit heavier on her feet than before, but would hopefully be able to carry out the next attack. Perhaps an attack of this caliber would work. Dictator needed to weaken the Pokemon a bit more, but not so much that it fainted.

"Alright, Lyra. Let's do Iron tail, one more time!" Dictator said, energy returning to their voice. Lyra nodded, focusing on the Budew once more. Her tail shone silver as she raced forward, aiming her shimmering tail at the Budew as she turned to hopefully give it a hearty whack.

 

Tella’s gaze snapped up to meet Dictator’s eyes as the nervous Trainer glanced at her; the look of apprehension on her face at being watched quickly schooled itself into a businesslike attitude. She gave a wordless nod, as if to assure Dictator that all was still well within acceptable parameters.

Lyra responded to Dictator’s instruction with difficulty, focusing hard on delivering exactly the right amount of power. The little Sylveon’s all-or-nothing nature didn’t lend itself to holding back, and as she pounced forward to strike, the soporific effect of the sweet scents wafting through the air of the meadow started to take hold a little more.

The fortunate part of this was that Lyra’s attack, which might otherwise have been too powerful even with her efforts to hold back, was just a little slower than it might have otherwise been, buffeting the Budew but not knocking it out cold.

Less fortunately, Lyra’s languor-deadened feet caused her to stumble as she collided with Budew, and she reacted too slowly to get out of the way when the blow sent a puff of paralyzing toxin whooshing out from her opponent’s body. Yellowish powder rose in a cloud, to settle in Lyra’s coat and collect in her eyes and nose.

Coughing and almost tripping over, Lyra caught herself before she fell, then slowly and torturously straightened to face her opponent— she was far too tough to be deterred by a little discomfort! The Sylveon was still plenty able to fight.

Budew, for its part, looked much the worse for wear. Reeling from the strikes and exhausted from launching so many different defence mechanisms in a short time, the little rosebud was on its last legs.

Dictator strained forward, holding their hands nervously in front of them, watching as Lyra fell. Perhaps they had been too hard on her? Was the attack too much for both Pokemon? Dictator only relaxed when it looked like both Pokemon were okay, though they did notice that Lyra took a little longer to get back up. Worry seized their chest again when they thought about what Lyra had already been through.

An unfortunate encounter with a bad client a few months ago had led to Lyra getting shot in the chest. The bullet had only narrowly missed her heart, and the Sylveon was lucky to have survived. She seemed to be fully healed from the incident, but Dictator still worried about their first and favorite Pokemon. The last thing they wanted was for some unknown complication to spring up at the last moment.

Still, Lyra seemed to be doing alright for the moment, and Dictator looked at the little Budew. It, on the other hand, was not doing so well. It did not look like it could fight back for much longer, which meant that Dictator's chance was now. Taking the park ball from their belt, they aimed it at the little rosebud, expanded it, and then tossed it in Budew's direction.

Come on... make a clean capture, please...

They bit their lip as they waited.

 

The Park Ball took Budew completely by surprise, focused as the wild Pokémon was on its opponent. For the second time, Budew disappeared in a swirl of reddish light; and this time, its struggles were weak.

The ball fell to embed itself in the soft earth next to the other one. It twitched once, then the button on its front pulsed red and emitted a click noise.

Lyra yapped out a noise that was equal parts victory cry and sigh of relief; and just like that, the fight was over. Dictator and their team had captured a new potential ally!

Dictator jumped into the air excitedly, giving a little twirl as they did. They had successfully captured a Pokemon on their first park expedition! They were so excited, they felt as though their chest was going to burst. After giving another little wiggle, they dashed over to where the last park ball had been dropped, before running over to the ball containing the Budew. They had, hopefully, just gotten themselves a new partner! They picked up the ball and put it back on their belt, then turned to Lyra.

"Lyra! Are you alright?" They asked, rushing over to her side. By now, Dictator was getting a bit winded from all the running around. Lyra cooed softly, trying to reassure her trainer that she was alright. However, when she went to move her paws, she found them heavy, uncooperative, and painful. Lyra winced in pain, and Dictator's eyes softened. "Oh, no! You're hurt -- that powder must've paralyzed you a bit."

Dictator looked over their shoulder at Tella. "What should I do?" They called out.

 

For the first time since Dictator and Lyra had made Tella's acquaintance, the Ranger's businesslike expression relaxed by more than a slight gentling of her ice-blue eyes, shifting all the way into a neutral look that was almost a smile. Moving at a pace that best approximated a speed-walk, she crossed the distance between herself and Dictator in a matter of just a few seconds, and knelt down next to Lyra where the Sylveon was standing resolute, refusing to admit defeat to a little pain.

"You brought some restorative medicine with you, if I recall correctly," Tella murmured. "The Lava Cookie is a traditional recipe whose medicinal ingredients affect Pokémon more strongly than humans."

As she spoke, the Ranger reached down to place both hands gently on either side of Lyra's face, pausing for a moment before making contact as though asking the Sylveon's permission. When hardy Lyra didn't so much as flinch away from being touched, Tella began massaging slightly at the corners of the Fairy-type's cheekbones. In response to the young woman's careful coaxing, Lyra's mouth opened without the Sylveon needing to undergo the excruciating pain of making her toxin-seized jaw muscles work.

It seemed that, for all her unyielding attitude towards Trainers, and her acceptance of the necessity behind battling and capturing wild Pokémon, Tella wasn't the type to let a Pokémon suffer needlessly if it was within her power to do something.

"Feed her carefully; I'll help her take care of getting the medicine down her throat."
