URPG YouTube Page Design Contest!

So as many of you probably already know, URPG has recently decided to get a YouTube account. Right now, though, it's looking pretty...well...bland. See for yourself. This is where URPG needs your help! What we need to get started are two things: A nice banner for the top of the page, and a profile picture. As a way to get people motivated, I'm turning this into a mini-contest! People can submit banners and profile pictures they create, put them to a vote, and then earn prizes!

Here are the rules:

• You do not need to be a URPG member to contribute, but note that the prizes are only valuable to a URPGer.
• Each member may submit up to 2 banners and 2 profile pictures to be chosen from.
• The banner ideally should be 2560 x 1440. If it's slightly bigger or smaller, that's ok.
• The profile picture doesn't have size constraints from what I can tell, but obviously don't make it too big or small. It should also be square or rectangular.
• It goes without saying that submissions should be serious and appropriate. Joke submissions are fine but please don't defeat the purpose of the thread.

And that's it! The contest will run for about just over a month. I'll try to close it on March 20th at 10:00pm EST. Anything submitted after will not be counted in the vote.

As for prizes, the winner of each category may claim 1 Hard-Rank (or below) Pokemon of choice! Hype!!!!

Also, to encourage participation (cause apparently I need to!) a consolation prize of 5K will be given to anyone who enters. Please don't submit garbage just for the 5K, cause I'll know!!

Have there been any other submissions than the ones in this thread (maybe entries on the other forums)?

So after wondering about the specifications for the huge banner size, I went to google-- I assume you're getting your dimensions from here?

But reading on at the link above, it recommends this size to account for Youtube viewing on a flatscreen television-- and then, only in certain formats (for example, youtube on Xbox doesn't display channel art that size. Or at all, if I remember correctly). Different devices are going to display different versions of the art, as seen in this graphic:


If we can assume that most of the time, the Youtube page will be displayed on a computer monitor, then the banner we need to design is going to need to be a size closer to 961x166. But if we really need to design a banner that takes into account the changing sizes between formats, that makes it a whole new challenge.

tl;dr, I guess...
Please confirm whether or not we need to design a banner that will function as three-in-one and look good across all iterations of youtube, or whether a simple header for the regular version will do.

 

Uhh just make it look good lol idk what to tell you. I got the dimensions from clicking "Add Channel Art" on the YouTube page itself. It takes you to a window that says "Recommended channel art size 2560 x 1440", so that's what I put here. Ideally it should be able to stretch that large but idrc as long as it looks good.

 

I actually tend to watch YouTube on my tablet far more often than on my desktop computer. I would definitely suggest we aim to cater for all three sizes

 

That's fine. The thing is that it's not just a resized version of the same banner-- they take the large banner, for TV formats, and crop it. It's cropped a lot for computer YT and a little bit more for mobile YT. So if we post a large banner, it will technically work on all three, it will just be cropped to all hell... but I guess I'll be experimenting by putting mockups on my own youtube page until I find one that works.

Their example that you included is actually pretty good. No matter which part it displays, it's just a background of baseballs. The cropping is irrelevant to the effect.

Otherwise, you need to keep your focal point inside the area that won't be cropped on any device, and let the rest be expendable background.

Fits within all parameters and is pretty simple, but a little too much pastel and kind of dweebish. Have the PSD and might mess around with it a bit more when I get the chance to create some different skins and themes.

Whoa, here I was thinking nobody had submitted to this and I was going to have to do my best just to cover URPG's bases, despite being ill! And then PC comes in here with bold designs, and I've been fretting for nothing!

I suppose I'll still whip something up, if I can make it presentable. It's a shame I won't be able to win a new pokemon, though.

Of the ones presented, I like PC's Fairy Channel Art the best, and I don't think there's a way I can really top that. However, I'm not really a fan of her Starters one, or the avatar that goes with it. With that in mind, I'll attempt to create something for the avatar, though it may not necessarily be intended to "go with".

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!


This is closer to my first idea, using the fire, water, and grass -type colours, in long, draping banners. I ended up at a bit of a loss, not sure what to make mascot or logo for the whole of URPG. Chose Voltorb over a plain Pokeball for it's edgy look, and it's recognizability. (I should note that it uses transparency so might not look good as-is against certain colours/backgrounds... if Youtube even supports transparency.)


This is using Fairy-Type colours, to fit more-closely with PC's channel art design. Viewing the two together, they don't quite fit-- it might make more sense to forgo the official colour here and use a colour scheme that matches the channel art instead. The brown is just the black colour used in pokemon sprites.

As for the slogan, I just want to put it out there that I kind of like "Create, Collect, Compete" better than "Capture", mostly because they're all said with the same mouth, where "capture" makes you open your mouth more-- basically, it's slightly more catchy. They both have the same number of letters and syllables, so there's not much difference and I just went for consistency here.

Let me know what you think. Like the others, I've got all the work files saved and can change it as desired.
