URPG Tiers Discussion

This is a thread for the discussion of the current URPG Tiers. As it affects the upcoming tournament directly, but also seems to be a subject that people like to discuss, I've decided to thus make a thread. URPG Tiers List

You can find it in the tourney thread. Discussion and suggestions would be looked at and considered. Don't expect all of your suggestions to get agreed though. But you can discuss. I won't ban you.

 

Why is Togekiss not on any tier, while Galvantula and Omastar are on Tier 3?

 

I think Serperior is too overpowered for tier 4, especially with Contrary. It should be at least 3 if not 2. Durant could also be moved up to Tier 2 (unless you move Serperior to 3, then Durant serves as a good counter, and iirc, tiers are balanced like that sometimes). That thing hits like a truck, has good typing, and it's pretty fast.

Smeargle is also viable for at least Tier 3 simply because we can choose what moves to sketch. Almost everyone has sleep move/set up moves/baton pass on it.

Murkrow is also pretty solid, as it's run in some Gym lineups. Should be Tier 2 with those Prankster shenanigans.

I checked and I see Togekiss in Tier 1. Galvantula and Omastar are kind of obscure. Tier 2 refers to Pokemon that could almost sweep and have lots of potential, but in the case of Omastar, even with a Shell Smash boost, it is still easily stopped. It thus belongs to Tier 3, a tier where Pokemon are still viable with potential to sweep but also kind of not really. Galvantula is easily a Tier 3 Pokemon.

I have mixed opinion on Serperior. While Contrary makes it viable, it only works on Leaf Storm and Serperior gets extremely little coverage. As such, it can be easily stopped.

Durant is viable as physical attacker and possibly a Baton Passer. However, Scizor does what Durant does, and is even better at it. Durant finds itself struggling to compete against the many threats that takes advantage of Durant's low HP and SpDef.

Smeargle used to be still viable. With the advent of moves like Shell Smash, it is thought that Smeargle would even be better. Like Durant, Smeargle also finds itself struggling to compete against the many threats. In Smeargle's case, it is extremely difficult to set up moves like Shell Smash or Spore, and not be a setup fodder, or Taunted, or priority-attacked. This is why it finds itself in Tier 4.

Not so sure about Murkrow. While Prankster is a good ability, Murkrow is niche and finds itself often succumbing to moves like Confuse Ray and Thunder Wave to just barely stay alive. Murkrow can work, but it can also fail. It doesn't really have the game defining factors that the Tier 2 Pokemon pack, but finds itself behaving more like a Tier 3.

 

Considering moving the following Pokemon:

Volcarona from Tier 1 to 2 (taken down easily with Rock-type attacks)
Feraligatr from Tier 5 to 3 or 4 (Sheer Force + Dragon Dance)
Scolipede from Tier 5 to 4
Medicham from Tier 4 to 3 (not so sure about this, note when compared to Azumarill)

Put Medicham in 3, the rest, I agree with Nitro on.

As for Murkrow, if you Thunder Wave it, it can priority Psycho Shift. Murkrow is monstrous, though I'm not sure how good it is in small battles like the tournament's 3v3s because it generally is meant to cripple but not necessarily kill the opponent's team, as well as stopping sweeps.

Why bother updating the old one instead of just changing the link in Judging Encyclopedia? Also, will Tier 5 be worth +10 to match the +50/40/30/20 of Tiers 1/2/3/4 respectively?
