As we've discussed, it's time to put all our discussion and ideas to the test. Yes, welcome to the Art Capture Challenge - 1st Trial!

Please note that the system we're testing is not set and we may change certain aspects as we proceed forward. By participating in this event, you can have a little competitive fun, earn a little money, and help the URPG at the same time. And perhaps, you might even win the prize.

For this Challenge, we're going to go with a specific theme. Since I'm an optimistic person, the theme shall be: New Horizons

    Rewards
    • $5,000 for Participating.
    • If there are enough participants, potentially a pokemon for the winner. If there are a ton of participants, I might award more prizes.
    • Depending on how the Art Capture Challenge ultimately turns out, participants might receive an Art Emblem.

    Rules
    • This is a open art contest. Entries edited by art programs are acceptable. If you simply want to scan a drawing and submit it, you are allowed to. This is not necessarily a Sprite Contest, so such submissions are discouraged.
    • You are given two weeks to submit your entry. You may only submit one entry.
    • Once the deadline is reached, the entries will be displayed in a thread to be judged by interested members. Note that it is possible to both participate in the event and judge it.
    • The entry can be any size within a reasonable limit, but you must follow the theme given, or the entry will not be entered into the contest (You can explain in your description how the theme applies if it's not obvious).
    • Please follow all forum and URPG rules, or you will be disqualified and/or warned.
    • You are not allowed to use stock images.
    • Do not use pre-made entries.

    Submission Form

    [Displayed Entry]
    Artist: Your name here
    Entry Title: The piece's name
Description: You may write one or two sentences regarding your piece.

To submit your piece, PM it to me with the above form.

Anyway, good luck and have fun! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here! I'll try and keep this thread updated with the number of entries so far!

    Current Number of Entries: 5

    Lol that was me :3.

Also will PE2k's AND BMG'S contest be together? Or separate?

It would probably be hard to keep them together but, it would add more participants as a whole.

How would you explain 'New Horizons'? What exactly would that be... a new Pokemon? I'm confused.

They will be together. It won't be too hard, especially since all entries are PMed to me and all Judge scorings will be PMed to me.

Whatever you can imagine. It doesn't have to be a new pokemon, though related to a pokemon theme. New Horizons generally evoke a feeling of adventure and exploration; of new beginnings and new days. You can take it literally or figuratively. You can draw a sun, rising in a new day above the horizon or a moment in which something new has been bestowed upon this world. Art has, is, and always shall be and interpretation based on the artist's creativity.

I've started my entry, but does it have to be Pokémon related? That last post you made confused me, but it says nothing about it in the rules.

That's a really good question. But since we're a Pokemon RPG, it should be pokemon related. Of course, considering that the pokemon world is huge, it can almost be anything.

    Another question...

In regards to the 'You are not allowed to use stock images' rule, is it allowed to take artwork such as Ken Sugimori art and maybe alter it, or put it into something like Paint and draw a background? I'm not sure how far that rule goes.

You're not allowed to take anything another person has created and alter it to fit it into your entry. Your entry must be 100% your own work.

Re: Art Capture Challenge - 1st Trial: Graphic Art

Most Graphic artists, use Other people created images...... I know That I did....

My Image that I used was from a TCG card that I cropped out off. I think it is Unfair if you cant use images you didn't create because most graphic artists use Images that they Render from something like I did or an image from Google or Planter renders and what not...

Just saying because my Entry doesn't work than T_T.

Guess my Entry is out, and I guess I wont be participating in this further if thats how the the rules are gonna be for graphic arts.

Re: Art Capture Challenge - 1st Trial: Graphic Art

Like I said, I am not an artist. I don't know what goes into creating these pieces. In fact, the entire point of this competition is to figure out who knows what they're doing.

The rules were partially based off of other forum art competitions and partially based off of what people told me were generally good rules.

I think discussion is important for developing this section. And an open dialogue will help us all figure out what we want.

OK well, TBH Stocks I understand But without people using renders ( The image things that dont have backgrounds)

My Gallery on pe2k All of my tags are using people created images/stocks.

SO I think we want Renders, But not stocks honestly most tags/banners/graphics use them so i think we nshould include them xD.

Graphics art is the art of drawing, painting, or printmaking. Most people think of it as making banners etc, which makes this name rather misleading.

Banners, tags, signatures, etc. are low-end graphics art. Real artists can create real pieces that are greater than 400x150 dimensions.

I think it's fair to say that a large percentage of URPG members would have some form of IT background, and this is mostly likely where this interpretation of the term 'graphic' comes from.

I know I myself, as a Computer Science undergrad at first made this mistake.

Re: Art Capture Challenge - 1st Trial: Graphic Art

Often a 'tag' is composed of a stock image as the focal point while the artist creates the background and adds effects to make the background and stock image work together. The focal point is the main part of the picture, and if it is created by someone else, is it worth a URPG Pokemon? Really, I'm not entirely sure myself. This is why I had doubts about this type of capture method, because we may not have as many skilled artists to create completely original composition that are high in quality. It's also why I suggested all forms of visual art to be entered in one competition. Meaning traditional pieces that are drawn/painted/etc. and scanned compete with those created entirely on the computer. Doing so would mean more entries overall, upping the competition a bit. Besides, (I may of mentioned this before) it isn't uncommon for someone to draw something, scan it, and then color it on the computer, as well as use a variety of other methods that mesh together traditional and digital art.

Re: Art Capture Challenge - 1st Trial: Graphic Art

Forgive me, I'm going to be a little slow trying to gather together all of this.

The competition, in and of itself, is open to any sort of piece, like Pidge said. The "Graphic Art" description doesn't just mean banners, but anything at all, really. It simply allows for computer-based tools to be used to enhance the image if the artist wants. There is no restriction in terms of that aspect.

Banners may use stock or extractions, but this isn't just a banner competition. You can create grand masterpieces because that's what is allowed.

The truth is that this is the type of capture method Pidge envisioned. It really is open to anything. I simply may have gone about describing it poorly or using terms that have different connotations in the art community.

Well, all I have is MS Paint and a mouse. So I guess I won't be entering this time around.
