    Azurill Curation

    Form

Nnngh this Azurill is so cute. I hate those sprites that make it look sad. I'm glad this one was made to look adorable. The wide eyes and open mouth add to that feeling for sure. Everything anatomy-wise looks okay. The tail ball is roughly the same size as the head. It does sort of look that maybe the right side cheek and ear are a titch bigger than their counterparts, which is a tiny bit odd since it seems like a frontal pose, but it's not really that big of a deal.

Nothing much really to say here as the Azurill isn't really doing much but looking at the camera. In the future, it might be cool to have it interact with something in the background (or have something in the background to set it apart) or perhaps doing some sort of action to give the piece a little more dynamic, like if it was bouncing on its tail or running, etc. For this rank, that's not really too big of an issue, but it could be a fun experiment (and I know you can do so, since I've seen your other work).

    Technique

I think here is where the piece could use a little work. I love that you put in shadows in the grooves of its ears and inside its mouth. That is exactly what its body needs too! You've determined the light source is from above, so help us viewers see how round the Azurill is. Shadows along the bottom, probably starting lightly at about the cheeks and then darker as you go down is how my art teacher told us to do rounded objects.

This will also help show that the spatial distance between the foot and the body. We'll probably also be able to see some shadow on the orb on its tail too, since the body is above it. Even just a little hint of shading will really make this Pokemon pop. Right now it looks a little bit flat.

Color isn't a necessary thing in any art, so that makes things like shadows even more important to show off your skill.

    Background

Even in a simple picture, background can be important and used for a lot of things. I think one of the biggest is spatial relationships. It's hard to tell where Azurill is in relation to anything because there isn't anything else here, so it sort of seems like it's floating! Some object or ground will help viewers determine size of the Pokemon as well, since they'll have something to compare it too (I mean, a really huge Azurill would make a funny story, too).

I'm also of the persuasion that a background doesn't necessarily need to be realistic, even if the Pokemon you're drawing is. It can be abstract or just interesting to look at as long as it compliments the piece. I personally like pieces that tell a story, give the mon some purpose or theme. Where is this Azurill? Is it on the beach? Is it sitting at home in the pillows? Sometimes it's easier to do with color, but some contrast can also really make the Pokemon stick out. If you don't want a realistic scene, Azurill seems happy, so what are some objects or designs that illustrate that theme? Hearts? Stars? Swirls?

    Result
The form of the Pokemon is pretty legit barring some shading to add depth, but the lack of background too makes this a hard call. I'm going to score this 25/35 for now.

I think that with some shadows added to make the Azurill not so flat, I'd bump this up to passing. Some background would also net you some other points, but not strictly necessary. Let me know if something I said didn't make sense!

    Fletchling Curation

    Form

Now we have a cute little bird. I see you used one of the official art poses, but that's okay, especially at this rank. The general shape seems fine, and I don't see any details missing—you even remembered to put in the tiny little eyebrow.

The head does seem a tiny bit too big on top, as if there's too much dome or that the eye and beak should be a little closer to the head. The reverse is true of the tail feather; the bottom black portion could be slightingly longer, while the top portion could be slightly shorter. These are both minor things, however.

Again, since it's a standard pose, we don't get to see the Fletchling interacting with anything. Maybe something like picking at a worm, or sitting with its brothers and sisters might've been interesting.

    Technique

This piece has a few more shadows than your last, which is great! The shadows on the bird's stomach definitely gives it a rounded shape and helps it from being flat. You remembered the wing too—just don't forget that the white part on the tip of the wing could use a shadow as well, since that's also rounded. Again, some sort of shadow on the ground might also be helpful to put the bird in space for viewers, but it's hard to do that without some sort of ground.

Here's something else you could also do with your shading. I know you're using the simple shading like the anime does (which makes sense since you're using an official reference), since you're also just using pencil, it might be fun to see if you can smooth out that shade and make it gradually disappear into the bird's body. It does take quite a while, but it might give your piece a slightly realistic edge to offset lack of color and whatnot. People will just be awed by your rad drawing skills!

    Background

A ground for your Fletchling might've came in handy especially since the bird does appear to be standing on something, we just can't tell what it is. That would give a clue to what the bird is doing too, as well as where it is. Is it in the woods? Did it wander into a cave by accident? At a Trainer's camp? This is all stuff I've said before but still no less true. These are only Simple ranked Pokemon, but the story the picture tells is just as important. As much care should be put into it. You have some beautiful backgrounds in your other work. Show it off!

    Result
Some of this stuff I've said already, so not much to add to it. However, I see improvement here, even when it was posted only a day after Azurill. You know what they say about practice and all.

I'm going to score this one 35/35 just barely, so that means Fletchling is caught! Work on those backgrounds.

    Poliwag Curation

    Form

Everything looks in the clear here. Again, it's one of the official art poses, but for this rank, that's okay. I don't see anything out of place, and all the appropriate limbs details are there. The only thing that really looks slightly off is slightly more white on the right side of the swirl than needed, since it leaves a minor hole on the bottom of the stomach, but that's really minor and doesn't impact much.

The water is a cool dynamic that could've opened you up to a few different poses, particularly like swimming or splashing around or something. The expression I think is one thing you could've changed from the official art to make it your own. The blankish stare is almost creepy but sort of looks sad. What is the reason for this sadness? That's one way to still use official poses and such but still alter it to make it your own.

    Technique

This piece really showed off attention to detail since you had to color in a lot more than normal. The swirl on the stomach and the left side of the Poliwag's body is great with nice, smooth pencil strokes. Overall, it looks really good, but I can see some slight areas on the right side and in the left eye that perhaps weren't quite blended enough and need to be gone over a little more. I do see that you kept with the “grain” as it were and curved your lines most of the time which does make a difference (and perhaps why I can see a little bit of line in that eye).

The shine in the eyes are also cool, and it also looks like you did some highlight on top of the Poliwag's head, although that might be an effect of the camera taking the picture too—it's hard to tell for sure but it does look part of the image. It's harder to see shadows since the mon is so dark, but it could've been possible to perhaps lighten up the entire body and then do a gradient getting darker the closer to the water it was (provided light is on the top, like the highlight sort of implies).

I really like the lower half of the Pokemon being submerged and having to be drawn differently. A lot of people forget that water murks things up and not everything is clear. This water must be very, very clear indeed. I've had different art teachers tell me that water also bends light so that the appearance of an object underwater is not necessarily in-line with whatever it is on top, too, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. It probably depends a lot on water quality and light score, but I guess in this case, if applicable, it would mean that the lower part of the body might be angled and moved over to one side a little. For this rank, that's not something I'm going to look at too closely.

    Background

We get closer to a background here than in your other simple work, which is great! I really enjoy the lines on the water since it definitely helps define the Pokemon in space. I think that maybe the one that cuts across the Poliwag is a little too dark, since water is nearly invisible most of the time. It would also be an interesting experiment to make this a more realistic style as well by dropping those outline lines.

As far as more things you could add to this piece, there's lots of life underwater! Weeds, rocks, other Pokemon, even debris and such can all be options. Lilly pads, pieces of food, a fishing lure!

    Result
The Pokemon is very solid here, and we get closer to having a more-defined background. The water effect is very nice. I'm scoring this 40/35 which means Poliwag is caught!

    Bunnelby Curation

    Form

Woo, Bunnelby. I like the pose you chose for this. It's sort of a blend between official art for both Bunnelby and Diggersby with the curled ear. Sort of a preview of things to come, plus it gets to show the Pokemon doing something interesting. I especially like the expression. The shape of its eyes paired with the open mouth give it this look of concentration, like all it sees is this berry.

The anatony looks pretty okay. The left side ear does look like it's attached a little strangely, though. From the position of the right one, we should be able to see where the left ear attaches too. And since it's curling over in front of it, not behind it, we should also be able to see the bend/inner ear a little. The collar also looks just a titch too wide (or else this rabbit has a huge neck). The top part should maybe be angled in a little more, since it seems to connect right under the head in most of the artwork.

The Bunnelby may also be just slightly long in body, and I think that adds to the look of it being unbalanced on its feet. Most pictures I see have the body angled slightly forward or have the feet a little further back and straight underneath the body to keep that center of balance on the flat toes. Something about this one, perhaps the backwards tilt of the head, makes it seem like the mon isn't sitting quite right.

    Technique

The shadows are pretty cool here. Definitely an improvement from the other simple mons in your thread. My only gripe is that there's that solid line of outline around them. Something like that would probably work if it was a solid block of color (and in some places, maybe not so dark), but here, with only pencil, it's sort of awkward, like it's drawing too much attention to it while not being finished (particularly the one on the side of the head. The ones on the ears aren't so bad since they give the ear a little bit of definition, even though it's still harsh, but the one on the head is kinda odd). The strike style probably adds to that slight unfinished feeling too, since it's not just one solid part of shadow. I think that the strikes would work without the outline and that the outline would maybe work if the shadow was blended smooth, but they don't quite work together.

Since you added some shadow on the mon, what about under the collar and under the arms? You added the shadow on the stomach where it hit the leg, so the same thing applies to these other areas. The collar isn't flat against the mon's front since it can still move its arms, and the same applies to those arms too. In addition, what about the shadow on the ground below where the mon is standing?

    Background

It's minimal, but the grass is a good start. Showing that much at least gives viewers a semi-spatial location and places the mon in space. What else is on the ground? Where did the mon get the berry from? Does that mean there's a tree nearby, or did it steal the food from someone? Is it near a burrow or another place it lives?

    Result
Improvement on some aspects—we get closer and closer to more backgrounds for these simple mons haha. More shadow work was developing too. Overall, good job. I'm scoring this one 35/35, which means Bunnelby is captured!

For starters, if you wish to draw Pokemon in order to capture them for URPG purposes, you would first have to join URPG (which you can do here) and make your stats.

To answer your question, you can submit either pencil drawings or digital art in order to capture a Pokemon if you would like. The style is up to you.

Finally, for future reference, this thread is not meant for asking questions pertaining to the art section. The thread for that is this one. If you have any more questions about the Art Section, post them there. If you have any questions about URPG, you can leave a visitor message on my profile.

This is not the place to submit your own artwork. This thread is meant as a Gallery for Elrond 2.0's art and its curations only. You also have not joined URPG, to my knowledge (unless you joined under a different name on PWN/PXR or a very long time ago), and therefore you have no reason to post Art in this section yet. Finally, Eevee is Hard-Rank. Please read the rules of the art section and refrain from posting in this thread anymore unless the posts are relevant to Elrond's artwork. Thank you!
