    A Word From Your Editor(s)

Hey there, everyone! You may have noticed that it's been three weeks since the previous URPG Times instead of the usual two. Don't worry, it's not a lack of activity- it's because this week there is a special double issue in honor of the opening of our TPW branch! This means that all of you who submitted work get paid 1.5X as much. Congratulations to all our great staff members here at the Times! For the rest of you, there's going to be more content than normal, which makes for an exciting read. Get excited everybody, we're going to TPW!

If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Gman, please let me know. He was last spotted near a Hasselhoff concert.

    Expansion Complete!
Hello TPW! Let me be one of the first to welcome you to our large URPG family. My name's SLC, and so long as you remain active, you'll be seeing me around a lot. The transition was smooth, and you'll all be settling in quite well over the next few weeks – there are a lot of events lined up for you lot, including the Dojo League, auctions, competitions and a whole lot more! Just be sure to bare with us for a while while we have time to make sure everything is perfect and ready for you as soon as possible. I hope to see you soon, and if you need any help don't hesitate to ask me or any other member :)

    Promotions!
Since our last issue, we've had seven members take the step up to a higher power, and here's a thanks from everybody for the good work you've already put in. Alaska, Roulette, Fierce Deity and EmBreon have all been promoted to officials (the second time, for Emma), while Monbrey and AmericanTreeFrog have become new moderators. Finally, Webmaster has taken up the vacant position of senior ref, meaning he can now take your ref tests and quizzes. Once again, we voice our congratulations to these people.

    Budget Tournament Over!
It's been four months since it's started, but the Budget Tournament finally ended this week, culminating in Fierce Deity being crowned the winner after defeating Ash K in the finals. He claimed a Volbeat as his prize, while Ash took home a Litwick. In the third-place match, ATF took victory over WTP, and earned himself the bronze medal (an imaginary one, of course).

    Gym Vacancies!
At the time of writing, there are several gyms open. Here's an easy list, so you can see what to apply for. For the TPW members, I suggest checking out the Dojo League, created exclusively for you.

    The URPG Quiz

    By WebMaster

Welcome TPW people to my treacherous quiz. Each question is worth a certain amount of points. Though the average is usually 3 points a question, some are worth more and some are worth less. Each point pays $250. Another little thing I wanted to throw in was an additional section of questions worth 25 points that only TPW members can answer. Find these additional questions at the bottom. One last thing, nobody has ever gotten 100% on my quiz. Will you be the first? Good luck! (you're gonna need it)

    Battle Scenario

    Noctowl/M/Keen Eye @ 58% BRN; Dusclops/M/Pressure holding Eviolite @ 6% Def+3 SpDef+3 [IMPRISON]

That Dusclops is gonna stall you till your Burn KOs. Since you're imprisoned, you can't Night Shade him and get this over with. It's not like Quick Attack works either considering it's ghost type (and you don't learn it iirc). Not to mention it has Def+3. There are a couple ways to solve this one but one in particular will ensure the victory in one turn. Dusclops will keep using Endure to stall. What is the solution to win this battle?

    Ref this

    Gliscor/M/Poison Heal w/ Iron Ball @ 100%; Metagross/NG/Clear Body w/ Lefties @ 100%

    Gliscor uses Fling
    Metagross uses Earthquake

    Interview with KantoMasta

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I think I've been signed up for like 2 years, because I joined BMGF and URPG at relatively the same time.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

Well, I'm hoping to become a Ranger in the Park here pretty soon, and possibly a Gym Leader. I really like the Park, battles, and just getting to meet all the people on here.

What are some of your favorite features included in the game?

O hai, I think I already answered that. The Park and battling are my favorite, along with being on the Times.

How do you feel about the community?

I really like the people here and think they are very friendly. Although some of our AIM conversations might be a little whacked,
they are some great people. :)

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

Dont make your starter a Pokemon you can buy in the Mart. They are easy to buy, and there is a great selection of non-Marts.

What are some of your favorite memories in the time you've spent playing the URPG?

Hmm..... Probably my first ever time through the Park, and just the fun battles I've had with a lot of people here.

    -----

    Interview with WebMaster;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I've been involved for 13 months as of May 3.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

I was promoted to approver on October 4 which was the day after my six month mark. I've also run a tournament in my URPG career, and I'm a Senior Ref now. I'm currently the Sunnyshore Gym Leader and former Hearthome Gym Leader.

What are some of your favorite features included in the game?

Definitely how you can customize your Pokemon. You aren't just restricted to four moves here.

How do you feel about the community?

I love the Rangers. I've been one since August, and we're a close knit family. I've had some conflicts with people but nothing has stood up to this point.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

ASK ME TO REF!!! jk Just make sure you get AIM and practice all the time. It's the only way to get better (or you can study for the Ref test for three months like I did and pass it on the first attempt).

I can second joining AIM as a recommendation. I've found that I enjoy logging into the URPG chat on a daily basis. It's a great way to meet and chat with the other players. (AND YES, GO REFBOT, GO!!)

How long have you been a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader for?

I've been a Ref since July 14 which is about 9 months. I've been a Senior Ref for six days now. I became a Judge even before I was a ref (May 30th; about 11 months now). I passed my Ranger test on August 7 so I've been one for about 8 months. Grader was my most recent job if Senior Ref doesn't count having it for about 3 months (February 12).

What attracted you to that (those) position(s)?

Ref was the highest paying job in the URPG so that's what hooked me. Judging seemed easier than reffing, and then I realized how dead the Contests section is. I enjoyed my first Park run with Chainy, and I talked with some of the elites and got tested and passed within 24 hours of taking the quiz. Grader was just to complete my collection lol (and make a little more excessive cash).

What are some of the challenges of being a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader?

I always miss Lefties on the first turn of reffing. XD Judging has almost no activity. It's hard to keep focus while rangering as real life can get in the way. For grading, my wages suck and one of my grades was overturned so I don't have any motivation.

What do you like most about the position(s)?

Reffing has brought in tons of cash; my lifetime wages are about 1.1 million. Judging pays instant wages. With rangering, you can basically do whatever you want in the battles. Grading, I guess looking at people's stories is interesting.

Having been a Gym Leader in two different Gyms, you must have fought quite a few battles as leader. Are there any particular battles you recall as having been particularly intense?

My battle with Monbrey in Sunnyshore Gym went down to very last Pokemon for each of us. I never though I'd hold my own against the legendary Lavaridge leader.

That sounds like a truly epic battle. Who came out on top?

Monbrey won that. He had more damage on me and I needed luck for the last turn. Didn't work.

Luck can be a fickle mistress, indeed. What would you say the most important strategy is for balancing all of the options each Pokemon has available to them?

I don't think you really need a balance per se. It's just all about unlocking a Pokemon's true strength.

So, it's best to look at a Pokemon's strengths and play to their potential?

Yes. Look at where the high stats lie and find ways to tinker with your strategies accordingly.

Have there been any difficulties for you balancing so many positions? I could imagine that being daunting.

Some positions I'm just more active in than others. I haven't rangered in a while due to schoolwork but I'll probably take a run or two after I get done with school.

I'm sure that the other Rangers will be glad to see you back. I'm looking forward to taking a run with you, at some point.

Yes, we're overloaded with runs currently. I'm still in the [Park Lords] chat so I'm still part of that family.

What excites you the most about the coming expansion?

Probably that for once I won't be the "new crowd". I might actually get my own apprentice this time.

I think I'll still be considered a part of the "new crowd" for a while after the expansion. Haha. Finally, any closing words?

Ummm ask me to ref? lol I guess just stay active and every member can go far if they do so.

    -----

    Interview with Soulmaster;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

Since the end of February but only really active as of a few weeks ago.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

I don't have any positions but I am working on becoming a Judge and a Ref right now. My main interest here is battling. Since I don't really do the others. I am always open for a battle.

What are some of your favorite features included in the game?

Oh this is a hard one. I don't think I can pick any one or two things as my favorite they are all good.

How do you feel about the community?

It is a great community that can handle just about anything. The leaks about the expansion, for example - I came in here right when they were happening. When it was leaked that there would be an expansion, which was the biggest news in like forever, the way the staff handled it was excellent.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

Keep at it and just try to be active wherever you can and try your hardest. Oh and learn types, that has gotten me many times recently.

What about judging and reffing is it that interested you?

Um to be honest when the committees came out and I saw they were looking for people to be variuos professions judging looked like it was the easiest so I chose that one and reffing.

What do you like most about judging and reffing?

Hmm, well since I haven't actually done either it is kinda a moot point, but reffing first - it is one of the most important professions here (and a good way to make money ;) ) and judging even if it doesn't have that many it is still an important part in the URPG.

Yes, both are very vital to ensuring the URPG runs smoothly. What excites you most about the choices in professions you've made? Are there any battlers or contestants you're looking forward to serving as a Ref or Judge for?

Just helping people out. No, not any one person. I just want to do it for as many people as I can.

Some of the records for reffing and judging are fairly lofty. Are there any you're looking to break over the course of time?

Hopefully I can break any if not all of them.

What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming expansion?

All the new members coming. Hopefully we will get a lot of new members.

I'm looking forward to that, myself. It'll be fun watching them all join such a great community. :) Finally, what is it about the URPG that first hooked you?

Well I was first on BMG and I saw it, looked at it and just all of the different things you can do here is what hooked me I think.

The multitude of features in this game are truly astounding. I feel as though there's something here for everybody. :) Any parting words of wisdom (or lulz)?

Live long and prosper. *Vulcan salute*

/Vulcan salute. Thank you for your time!! :D

    Glad to do it. :)

    -----

    Interview with SLC04;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I joined PE2K in August 2007, and began playing URPG not too long after that.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

I'm a Judge, and leader of Mikan gym. Two or three months ago I had my temporary Ref license.

What are some of your favorite features included in the game?

Of course, I love battling but I still have a soft spot for Contests, being a Judge and all.

How do you feel about the community?

It's awesome! I've made a lot of great friends over the years, and I've laughed loads in [URPG Chat]. If it wasn't so good, I wouldn't stay here.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

Take your time settling in, and make some friends with some of the older members. Get them to help you with anything you need, and you'll slowly learn. If you have any questions, ask me. :>

How long have you been a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader for?

I've been a Judge for just over a year and a half.

What attracted you to that (those) position(s)?

To be honest, I just wanted some kind of position. I didn't have the patience to be a Grader or Ranger, and I had failed the Ref test several times. I passed the Judge quiz within one or two tries, and since there wasn't a test back then I got the job pretty quickly.

What are some of the challenges of being a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader?

I'm still quite a slow Judge, so some Contests take a long time. Some are quite boring, too. Oh, and not that many people do Contests so it's hard to find people.

What do you like most about the position(s)?

The pay is a lot better than Referee pay, but it's just that no one does them :p

    -----

    Interview with Buoy;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I joined back on the 17th of April in '10, but I sort of disappeared for eight months. When I returned, I'd changed my username so no-one knew me and basically got another start at URPG. So yeah, I've been around for quite a while now, though it's nothing compared to some of the 'vets'.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

Hi! My username is Buoy (or Buoysel), and I am a Grader, Ranger, Judge (R/S/E and D/P/Pt only ;_;). I'm also here to help anyone who wants help. ;> I'm interested in collecting Normal-type Pokémon at the moment, since that's my favourite type, and I'm very into the National Park and writing. I'm not a good battler. OR REFEREE. In fact, I've failed my ref test seven times to date, but with eight attempts (I got a temporary license on my seventh go), making me one of the most fail-y referees ever. Maybe. I like grading a lot as well as taking people on National Park runs, but I don't get the opportunity so much any more. I'm told that I am a 'vibrant' person (pfft, yeah right). I enjoy poking people with my non-opposable thumbs and I am generally friendly, although a little sarcastic from time to time. I think it's because of my terrible sense of humour. UM, YEAH.

What are some of your favourite features included in the game?

I adore FFAs. It's the only form of battling that I can do any good at, usually, so that's what I like doing if there's one on. I also enjoy the variety of scenarios within the National Park, and inventing stories is pretty cool, too. Grading, my main source of URPG income, is a useful way of keeping myself in the know of writing while helping others and even getting to read, something that I enjoy. BEING A RANGER IS AWESOME. I get to randomly roll Pokémon for trainers to encounter and throw said Pokémon at trainers in unexpected ways -- usually insane ways, because that's how I roll. I do pretty much what I want as a Ranger, and that's awesomesauce.

How do you feel about the community?

They're all nice enough people once you learn how their malicious comments are their disguises for love. THEY'RE LOVING PEOPLE. Some cause problems more often than not, but, at the end of the day, we're like a criminally mad family. If I was related to all these people. Which, thank Allah, I am not.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

    EAT YOUR GREENS. Um, no. Try to have fun, I guess. Don't feel pressured to follow what other people do or have done because it seems like everyone should do it. If you find you're not good at something, don't worry. There's bound to be at least one thing in URPG you'll excel at -- one day, you might even be awesome like me. Also, don't start with a Pokémon or capture Pokémon you don't like simply for the fact that they might be competitively better or for the fact that everyone uses them. If you like a Pokémon, you should capture it or use it -- it doesn't matter if other people call them 'crap' or some other sorts of names (you know the ones). The point of Pokémon is training the Pokémon you love to their best and using them to their full potential -- all 'mons can achieve something if you do just that. I'm a prime example of using generally unused Pokémon, like Chimecho. ;}

How long have you been a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader for?

I was a Referee for a week sometime back in March. I've been a Judge since early last July, a Ranger for a year (A YEAR TODAY AS I WRITE THIS YAY) and a Grader since late last July.

What attracted you to that (those) position(s)?

Being a Ranger attracted me first, since I'm a big RP geek x]. I loved the idea of being able to make fun things happen for other people in an RP -- like being the GM of a major roleplay or something. I liked the idea of being this cool, adventurous guy who led trainers through wild areas to see what creatures they could find. I LIKE ADVENTURES, MKAY? A friend of mine, SLC, started doing a lot of Contests last June/July time, and I liked doing them at the time, so I decided that I wanted to become a Judge (well, that's what he'll have you believe -- I wanted to become a Judge shortly after I became a Ranger, since I'd been doing Contests at that point, too). I'd wanted to become a Grader, though, since returning from my eight-month hiatus (and even before that, methinks, as I'd already written two stories before disappearing and I remember vaguely attempting the Grader test at the time). However, until I met Bumblebee, I didn't know how to word my advice, but he taught me the basics of grading and I took it from there myself. I wasn't sure why I was attracted to grading, really. It was probably since I liked writing so much.

What are some of the challenges of being a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader?

Um. A lot if you want to be a ref. There's a lot of things to take in mind when reffing, and the reason I fail so much is because I still haven't got into the habit of using them all. More people are better at that sort of thing than I am. With Judging, there are quite a few gimmicks in it, so you have to be careful to get the smaller details right. It's a little intricate, but it's easy if you know what you're doing.

Being a Ranger requires a lot of patience with your Trainers -- they don't always post as regularly as they ought to, and sometimes you yourself may have problems starting a post to reply to your Trainers. You may need to rebuff your trainers from time to time, as they might not always get how things work, or they might be a little demanding of you, but you hold your breath and stay patient with them -- you need to be a bit of a people person in rangering, from what I've experienced. You also need to have good judgement -- was that combo realistic enough for a Pokémon of that nature to perform? Is that move really wise in the current environment, or can it even be used there? Is that trainer being a little too rude or disruptive? Was that post good quality?

Being a Grader requires even more patience, and more judgement than being a Ranger requires. You need to be patient enough to read through a story, ones that might not actually interest you, even ones laden with grammar problems (which can be off-putting, believe me). You have to be able to know what to say to the reader that will tackle their most major problems and tell them how to make it better in a way that suits their style of writing, not calling them out on every error or giving them advice to make their style a style you prefer. You need to know the subtle boundaries that writing involves, and judge whether the story is really good enough to capture the Pokémon aimed for. Introductions, plots, characters, dialogue, grammar, description, length (in some cases) and Pokémon difficulty are only some of the factors that play a part in grading, more particularly in the decision to pass or fail. In any profession, though, you just need to have common sense -- that's the most important quality.

What do you like most about the position(s)?

The ability to help others, frankly. I'm always looking for an opportunity to help, even if I might not always have the time to. That's what being in any position means to me -- just the capability to help people in the URPG through my professions.

    -----

    Interview with Alaskapigeon;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I have been in URPG for a little over two years now. I joined the second day the BMG branch was open.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

I'm a ref and grader, I like pina coladas, long walks in the rain, and ushering condemned spirits into the afterlife.

How many condemned spirits have you ushered, would you estimate, over the last two years?

Oh, I'd say it's somewhere in the thousands range now. All dem fornicators and fiends.

What are some of your favorite features included in the game?

Dat story section has always been a soft spot of mine. It's really helped me to grow as a writer and the other graders (DAT SCOURGE) have gotten me to read some pretty epic stuff. 8)

How do you feel about the community?

The community here is excellent. I have made the best friends of my life here and they help me get through every day. The URPG is an amazing place filled with amazing people and if I could go back and do everything again, I would still come here.

I'd say that the best part of the community here is how everybody seems to genuinely like and care about each other. Not much of a question, but I definitely agree with the people we're surrounded by being excellent. :)

Indeed. We're all a family here. It makes me happy.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

Don't drink anything anyone gives you and a good first Pokemon to write for (other than Magikarp) is either Poliwag or Machop. Machamp and Politoed are both great Pokemon and they only take 5k to write for.

Those are all very solid suggestions!! However, what if you offer them a pina colada? Would that be safe to drink, or is that how you usher spirits?

No. Don't ever accept drinks from me. Ever.

SO THAT'S WHY I CAN'T REMEMBER THE OTHER NIGHT. What happened after I passed out from that drink?

    All the things happened.

How long have you been a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader for?

I've been a grader for a pretty long time. Not sure exactly, but I think I was one before I used AIM a lot so it's been like a year and a half. I've been a ref since last summer.

What attracted you to that (those) position(s)?

I like reading everything and so I figured it'd be a good way to make money. As for reffing, I just thought it'd make me more useful.

Of the pieces that you've read, are there any particular favorites you'd suggest others read? (YES, I PUT YOU ON DA SPOT. XD)

Well, I didn't grade it, but I love Scourge's Looking for Hell and Running Through Daisies (not biased at all). Another favorite of mine is Jess' Bad Egg. Scourge's style is in all seriousness incredible. She's at the quality of a published writer and her prose is unique and she's got it developed to the point where I could tell her apart from someone else based on her writing. In Jess' case, I think she's a master of suspense and is an amazing horror writer. There's lots of other people's stuff that's great too, but those guys just came to mind.

I'm sure that both of them appreciate the praise. From what I've read of their work, both are indeed truly phenomenal writers.

What are some of the challenges of being a Ref/Judge/Ranger/Grader?

Being a grader is tough because sometimes you have to read and review things that are not... good. In any way, shape, or form. But you grade because you love it, so even when it's difficult, it's a labor of love. As for reffing, whenever I have to do something that requires remembering things really fast, my brain panics and I end up doing something stupid. 'S the same reason I suck at driving. I'm doing everything great, 'cept I'm in the wrong lane... Yeah.

Hopefully you avoid any mishaps in both driving and reffing, then. DON'T DRINK AND REF/DRIVE. It sounds as though you truly enjoy grading stories. What do you believe are the best qualities for an aspiring Grader to have?

Graders should be patient and have good people skills and judgement. Even when you grade a terrible story you need to be able to pick out good things so that the author doesn't get discouraged. You also need to have a lot of integrity n' stuff like that. Grading is like anything else, where you get better the longer you do it, but if you're already good at writing you'll probably make a good grader. If not, it's not too difficult to pick up.

It sounds like a good attitude is the most important thing for those looking to become a Grader. I could see it being a challenging balancing act, what with walking the fine line between criticism and appearing rude or insensitive. Have there ever been any instances where you've felt bad having to fail a Story capture?

Oh, yeah. There've been times when I could tell someone put in a lot of effort but still came up short of what they needed. It just happens and the best thing you can do is to help the person improve. Chances are the kind of people who exhibit that much effort are likely to take your advice and work at it.

What I like so much about the Stories are that, in addition to the reward of earning a Pokemon (or several), it offers the writer a chance at personal growth. I hope that everyone reading this writes at least one Story, as I feel there's a lot to be gained by doing so.

What do you like most about the position(s)?

I like reffing because it allows me to help newbies and I make a metric buttload of cash. Grading is rewarding for me because I can help people become better writers and hone my own abilities.

Reffing sounds to be a viable way for anyone to add some extra money to their pocket. Who should consider applying?

Pretty much everyone. It's not a difficult thing to do and it's easy to find someone who will help you practice for your Ref Quiz/Test.

I'd say everyone reading this should feel comfortable applying for being a Ref. I know from experience that Refs are always in-demand, so hopefully a few more people will enlist.

What are you looking forward to most about the coming expansion?

I'm really excited for all the new members. I love the members we get on BMG, but to get so many will be incredible. I'd like to add more members to our family here because it'll make everything even more fun. :D

I'm excited about that, myself. It'll be great to see so many new faces, and to get to know a (hopefully large) portion of them. We're already a dysfunctional fun crowd, and I really hope the new members become a part of our family here. Lastly, any closing words? Be they of wisdom or the lulz (or both)? :D

I'll repeat what Scourge has always told me:

"Follow your heart (if you still have one), eat lots of cheese, keep your ears clean, and watch out for ducks."

    Thanks for the interview, broham.

    That is sage advice, indeed.

Thank you for your time, Alaska!! Stay sexy glorious. :)

    -----

    Interview with WinterVines;

How long have you been involved with the URPG?

I've been with URPG since September of 2010. I am Driftveil City's Gym Leader, which is Ground-typed. I'm also Sandalstraw Division leader, which is the contest branch. It's tough-attribute, so I have Ground, Rock, and Steel Pokemon. I am a Ranger, Grader, and Referee. I like the URPG style of battling because it's a little different than the games. It needs a different mind set, and I like that most battles are like a puzzle. The community here is great. They've been like a second family to me.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (Positions held, interests, etc)?

I became a Ranger first, on the 13 of January. I loved the roleplaying and the chance to make multiple characters to take on expeditions. My Ranger character is my favorite one. The biggest challenge here is when voice disks don't work, because you want your Trainers to get a good mon list and have a good time.

I was a Grader next, on the first of Feb, so a year and three months about. I'm going into writing for a career, and grading is very much like editing, which I love to do. The biggest challenge in this job is other people's grammar. XD

I was a Ref last, because I'm a great procrastinator XD I did the test on August 7, so nine months on that one. I like math too, and reffing is nice and simple. It's also fun to watch your dice screw people over and hax XD You actually learn a lot about battling by reffing. The biggest challenge here is figuring out the small random facts that don't come up very often. Sometimes people have to hop on the game and test them, especially with some of the B/W changes.

Is there any advice you'd have for newer players?

What I'd tell newer players: Battle a lot. If you really want to learn how, do it often. You learn more from losing than you do winning. Most importantly, just have
    fun. ^^

    Story of the Week
    By Buoysel

This issue's Story of the Week goes to a rather special member, whom we have all come to love and adore. He's German, fuzzy and a little illiterate, but this co-editor of the URPG Times has wrote a story which I thought deserving of Story of the Week. Having personally graded it, I can assure you that, although not the most readable of things, a lot of effort has been put into the story by GMANDIDDY. We catch up with Michael in the next few chapters of Revelations, as well as meeting Martin and some evil-sounding Pokémon. In a world where not many know of the existence of these otherworldly creatures, how will Michael stop them in their tracks? Will Martin ever find his lost family? Of course, those questions aren't answered in the story, but I think they will be sometime soon. It's a super exciting thing, okay?

    CONGRATULATIONS. Eat this 1,000, Gmandiddy.

    Pokemon Of The Bi-Week
    By SLC

Hello there! It's time for Pokémon of the week, and this week the Pokémon isn't rolled by me - I've been given permission to do it on a somewhat popular starter choice for newer players. What is it, you ask?

That's right, it's Lucario! If you have one of the steel/fighting types, feel free to claim $1,000 and add them to your stats (after posting here, of course.

    How to obtain

Lucario is quite a difficult PokémonNot including winning one as a prize in a tournament or writing contest, via auction, through a trade etc., there are only two ways to obtain a Lucario. One of these methods is by writing for one. As a Complex ranked Pokémon, even Riolu is very difficult to capture, requiring your story to have around 30,000-40,000 character in addition to a strong plot and good grammar. However, if you're interested in writing directly for Lucario, it will be 40,000 to 55,000 as it is Demanding ranked.

The other way is through the National Park, although you cannot choose what you're going to find there, without the use of a voice disc item. This will only work on a Riolu, though, as Lucario is too high a rank for it. If you come across Riolu, the MCR (minimum character requirement) is 25,000 characters, and if you find Lucario you'll need to write 35,000 characters for it.

    Battle Strategy

On paper, Lucario should be pretty good in the URPG. It has a pretty good Attack and Special Attack, and an alright speed. However, it has a few problems. It's quite weak, and can only take a hit or two - you'd expect something like this to be quite a bit faster, though. Another flaw is that it's not quite strong enough to become a feared sweeper without taking a turn to set up Swords Dance or Nasty Plot which, due to being relatively frail, might not be a possibility. However, it can be quite good if you know how to use it. For example, switching in on a Pokémon which can't do a lot of damage or is holding a choice item will give you the turn (or more, if they don't switch out) you need to start inflicting some major damage. The basic strategy is to either Swords Dance, Nasty Plot or Agility (to stop revenge killers - but be warned, this will leave you significantly weaker) and then make use of it's somewhat diverse moveset to deal a lot of damage. Priority is a small problem, but Extremespeed will let you have the final laugh, particularly with the Attack boost.

    History of the Times
    By Gmandiddy

Hello, I am one of the Editor-in-Chief of the URPG Times and I’m going to explain what happens here and how you sign up.

Ok, let’s start from the beginning, right back to when the URPG Times was first published. Back then, FAIR was in charge of the URPG Times and it provided to be a big success with lots of positive feedback. Then the URPG Times went through its first dark patch. FAIR became inactive and the Times overall was ignored and no-one offered to carry it on. However, once we moved over to BMG, there was a lot of interest from some members, Kanga, Trainer17 namely, decided to bring it back. The published the issue on November 30[SUP]th[/SUP] 2010. However due to Kanga’s disappearance the Times, yet again, fell under the radar. After a couple of months Ataro, a former moderator, decided to bring back the URPG Times to its full glory. He succeeded and The URPG Times was back and in full swing. Soon later, Ataro suddenly became busy in full life and suddenly stopped producing the URPG Times. I decided to bring back the Times to its full glory and with the help of Alaska, we have resurrected the Times.

The URPG Times is split up into small articles all put together. You could write an article based on a certain section of URPG, for example an article explaining the National Park, or an article about the Story section and how you improve your stories. If that isn’t your cup of tea, you can always interview a fellow member or be in charge of the Story of the Week section. The URPG Times has a lot to offer and is also flexible around your own schedule.

Now the question on your mind surely is: How do I join sign up to the URPG Times? Firstly, you need to sign up at the URPG Times HQ Thread, which is located on the main page. There you fill out a form and post it on the thread and wait for a confirmation post by either Alaska or myself. That’s basically it and you are now a member of the URPG Times family. You will be expected to send in your piece of work for every issue, unless there are any problems. Issue’s will be posted once every two weeks, allowing a lot of time to send in your articles.

That’s about it. Oh, before I leave. Watch out for Alaska, sometimes she can be crazy, jokeIloveyoupleasedon’thurtme

    FFA Report
    By Fossil Fusion

Well this URPG Times there was not many Free For Alls. This week only Pokemaster and Mubz reffed one each. Pokemaster has recently came back to the URPG and got stuck right into reffing! So welcome back govner. Now let’s take a look at the Free For all he had reffed.

It consisted of nine contestants who battled it out for victory. The special rule was that all the Pokemon had their normal abilities but had illusion ability as a secondary. This would be very interesting because it could shroud your Pokemon in mystery, and make the Battlers think twice before attacking! Now let’s take a look at some of the the illusionary names some Pokemon got.

ChainReaction01’s Jolteon got Togetic now that would be funny to Thunderbolt and Volt Absorb for health.
Derian’s Glalie got Remoraid… hmm that’s different indeed!

According to the log Remoraid (Glalie) sat on the side with Moody and then won it basically with stat ups. The normal Free For All Strategy by Derian! ;)

    1st Place: Derian & Glalie receiving $4000
2nd Place: Sexy Zolar & Roserade receiving $3500
3rd Place: Alaska with Salamence receiving $3000

TIP of this Week for Free For Alls, don’t trust Moody Pokemon!

    Intro to the National Park
    By Kantomasta

    The National Park

    What is it?

The National Park is almost like the Safari Zone in the games. The only difference is that because it's on the forums, you RP(roleplay) as you go.

Ok, but how do I go?

Getting into the Park is simple! All you need to do is sign up a character in the sign up thread, and once it's approved, your good to enter! Then go to your front gate, and post your stats, which only costs 2,500. Then, once a ranger says they'll take you, let the RP'ng begin!

    Wait, a Ranger?

Yes, a Ranger is like a guide. They will meet you at the start of your Park run, and lead you until the end! A Ranger has many jobs. Before the run, they have to roll for your encounters list. During the run, they will add comments during battle to help you, hold onto the pokemon you captured, or, in more severe cases, have to escort you out! Now don't worry, they won't escort you over nothing, just if you do something severe twice in one run.

That makes sense. Do I need to bring items on the run?

Yes! Items are important for a lot of reasons. Park/super/hyperballs are what you catch pokemon in! You can also buy special kinds of pokeballs in the shop. Just remember, certain balls will only catch certain kinds of pokemon, so make sure to have the right kind. You can also buy healing items, repels, all kinds of stuff!

How many pokemon should i bring to the park?

Well, your 2,500 you paid to get in covered for two pokemon. For any extra pokemon, it's 500 a piece. Most people stick to two pokemon, but you can bring more/less. There is no required amount though.

How many pokemon can I catch?

Well, you can catch up to fifteen pokemon. This is because you can only run into fifteen pokemon throughout your run. At the end of the run though, you have to choose only three or less to take with you. Lastly, each pokemon has a MCR. That's where your RP'ng comes into effect. You need to RP your characters thoughts, battle and all that. Well, each post has a number of characters. Each pokemon has their own number of minimum Characters you have to type before you can catch them. Don’t worry though, you don't have to do it all in one post, it can take a few.

    Anything else I should know?

Yes! Like with all new things, you need to read the rules before doing anything. Well, that's about it, so good luck, have fun, and I'll see you around!!

    Target of the Week
    By Fossil Fusion

Well guys I hope the people who battled for this Target Week for the URPG Times. I must admit each battle I had to overcome was very interesting. I will detail below the Winners, Losers, and the Details of each battle. Also, you will be paid your Money for Reffing here too.

Firstly, there was only 1 person who beat me. That was Pman. He did very well to choose the Pokemon he did! I did not expect any Alakazams here! I was against Alakazam, Lapras, and a Metagross. My Pokemon had 2 Pokemon weak to Alakazam, therefore putting me at a disadvantage with Infernape, Gengar, and Dragonite. Nonetheless, congratulations! You receive a free TM Substitute for your troubles this week! ;) Enjoy! Post here to claim!

Reffing Wages make sure to claim them guys before this URPG Times Issue is closed.

    Ebail: $6000
    Synthesis: $2000

NOW FOR THIS TARGET WEEK. IT WAS RANDOMLY ROLLED BY GMANDIDDY. Yes my sexy babe! <3

    This week’s Target it…

    Ebail
    Aim: y2beric

    Rules: Tag Force rules

Basically, whoever challenges the Target this week must bring a Partner! Then, Ebail must pick a random trainer online and Partner with them. But whoever defeats this target Week it counts as the only person to win Target Week. For example:

Ebail is challenged by Trainer A. Trainer A chooses Trainer B as a partner. Ebail must choose Trainer C as a partner. Since, Trainer A challenged, of Trainer A wins they earn Target Week win, whilst Trainer B does not.

    Then the battle rules are:

    4 on 4 (2 Pokemon per Trainer)
    Holds Yes/No
    Revolution/B/W Revolution
    Sleep/Freeze/OHKO/Evasion Clauses

    Winners: $3000 each
    Losers: $1500 each
    Referees: $3000

First 3 people to defeat Target Week this week with these rules will receive a very special prize. No joke, get on it! WHOEVER LOSES TO TARGET WEEK CANNOT CHALLENGE UNTIL THE NEXT TIMES.

    Remember to log here refs!

    Enjoy and get dat target!

    Interview #2
    By Kantomasta

    Color Code:
    Kantomasta(me)
    Zolar
    Pokemaster
    BakuraBoy13
    LS
    Monbrey
    Pman
    FF

I walked into the room and looked at the large table. Looking around at the people, I knew this was going to be a looong day. I sat down at the head of the table, pulled out my notebook and pen and got to work.

"Ok, first off I thank you all for coming and participating in this interview. Let's get started right off the bat shall we? What are your current opinion/s about the expansion to the TPW forums?" I asked the people. Zolar was first to speak.

I feel like it is good to get the URPG name out there and expand in every direction as long as we stay what we are and hopefully always will be.

Seems like a good idea. IDK I wasn't here when the ideas came around and stuff.

    Whats TPW?

The table burst out into chatter, everyone trying to explain TPW. After the noise settled down, we continued.

    Oh, well IDK.

Not a Fan but ill live. Could go good. Or could go bad like the BMG expansion.

    The sooner the better

Pman, we have a planned release date. Mostly, the biggest advantage is the number of new members we'll get, Hopefully, it's Good for the community

I think the expansion will be great for the URPG. It will be nice to see newer ranks raise up to us PE2K members and overpower us. Just like the BMG members did. At least I will be around for this expansion

I smiled, glad all my interviewee's were participating in the interview. Well, everybody but BakuraBoy anyway.

"Ok, what are your personal opinions about TPW? Do you think that joining them will add or decrease activity to the URPG?" I asked, eager to hear answers for the next part.

Judging by how many people I've seen online on my first visit to TPW, I think that it will help the URPG greatly. If people just realize who and what we are, we can gain a lot of new members.

Haven't seen a lot of TPW but while it doesn't have the acitivity of BMG, it seems like a nice forum that the URPG could fit into. And i reckon a lot of them would get involved 'cause a lot of them seem pretty stoked about it.

    Add obviously

Add thats not opinion thats fact.

Definately add. The only concern is if it pulls people away from BMG. We need to keep both sectors running at full capacity

Personally, I think the expansion will increase activity a little bit. However, it is difficult to know, until it happens

I smiled knowing that everybody liked the move and thought it would increase activity.

I continued, only having one more question. "How fast do you think that the TPW members will take to the URPG? Things such as get better, adapt the new idea, etc" I asked, looking around the room.

I've only been on TPW a few times, but judging by what I've seen they will probably poke around and hopefully join.

I couldn't really say since I don't really know anyone on TPW and I wasn't here for the BMG expansion, but I think the amount of dedication that BMGers are putting in will help them to adapt quite quickly.

The URPG isn't a hard concept to get a grips with once you're settled in and used to it.

Probably take a few weeks, however it depends. Most members who play POL, or competitive Gameboy might stand a better chance at first

A few months probably. 2-3 max

I nooded to them all and motioned towards the door. "Well, thank you for answering, and I cant wait for the expansion!"

    JURK Pkmn
    By Xali

Welcome to the first ever installment of WHO’S THAT JURK PKMN?!? Basically we’re going to find some of most annoying Pokémon that you can confront in battle here in the URPG and breakdown the reasons that make them annoying…. Oh, but we won’t stop there. What you really want to know are some tips that’ll help you beat the little fiends we are talking about right? Well we’re going to get them for you! Also if you have one of these guys take away $1000 from your money (just kidding, although some people may want you to do it for real.)
For our first JURK, we introduce you to Whimsicott!

Notice the demonic look in its eyes and the malicious smile it has. Clearly the traits of a “JURK PKMN”

WHY U SO ANNOYING?: What makes Whimsicott such a nuisance is the fact that it has a high base speed of 331. That makes it one of the faster Pokémon you’ll encounter, but on top of that, the geniuses at Nintendo decided to give it the Prankster ability! If you’re not familiar with this ability then you’ve probably been living under a rock since Gen 5 came out. Anyways, this ability pretty much lets it use moves like Leech Seed, Encore, Grasswhistle, because it gives them priority +1. So it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a Speed Deoxy’s Speed+6 and you use sub on the same turn they leech seed you, because you’re going to get hit first!

Some of the more common uses of Whimsicott are sub/seed or to use it as a crippler that paralyzes your team or puts them to sleep. It also learns Switcheroo, giving it has the potential to leave you with a choice item at the end of the first turn and what’s worse is when it has Encore. If you used a non-damage move and Whimsicott switched in on you, chances are pretty good that your opponent is going to go for the Encore. One more thing, this little nub PKMN also learns Cotton Guard which raises its defenses. Don’t let it do that!

Items that Whimsicott may carry are either Leftovers or a choice item.

OMG, How do I beat it?: There’s a few Pokémon that can exchange moves with Whimsi.
The most notable are mons with Magic Bounce such as Xatu or Espeon because their ability reflects stuff like Grasswhistle back at the original user. Xatu also has a flying type advantage over this little pest.

Next, and my personal favorite, is Trace Gardevoir. Not only does it copy Whimsicott’s ability, but it also learns the move Magic Coat which is the move equivalent of Magic Bounce. Additionaly, Gardevoir learns Icy Wind and this move will lower Whimsicott’s speed thereby letting Gardevoir counter-utilize the Prankster ability.

Other ok counters are Sap Sipper mons, they’ll pretty much negate Whimsicott’s grass type attacks and if they get hit by one, then they’ll get a nice ATK+1 boost. Mons like these are Miltank (which is usually targeted for Leech Seed) or Zebstrika.

Of course, you can always go for the heavy hitters that have type advantage, but unless you arm these guys with Lum Berries, you’re going to have a hard time. Bugs, Fire, Flying, and Ice-types with strong Special Attack are your best bet to inflict serious damage on a Whimsicott.

Also remember that you can get out of sticky situations with a U-Turn attack.

That’s our little segment on WHO’S THAT JURK PKMN?!? If you want me to analyze another Pokémon for the next article, drop me a PM. The more people that choose a certain mon, the better the chances are that I’ll do it.

    Marketplace Guide
    By SLC

Hello guys, it's me for the second time this issue, and I'm going to be writing a quick guide for the URPG Marketplace, which is the area you can buy Pokémon, TM's, Daycare Moves and Dream World Abilities. I'll be telling you what you can do in each of the places, and suggesting things to buy early on so you can get an early advantage. Here's a quick synopsis of all of the different stores which you can utilise:

    The Pokémart
The Pokémart is a great place to spend your cash as there are so many things which you can buy here – held items, TM's, trade items and Pokémon. There is a huge range of prices, from $500 for mail to $9000 for the bigger TM's and HM's such as Surf, Strength and Protect. If you want your moves as soon as possible, then I'd recommend coming here as the daycare has a small wait time.

    The Daycare Center
The Daycare Center is another place to get theoretically better moves for a cheaper price. While here, you can buy any Breeding Moves, Move Tutor Moves or Special Moves (such as any moves learnt via the Dream World). The cost is quite low, at $5000 a move, but the Pokémon learning the move must be left in the Daycare for 24 hours, in which time you can't use it in battles. The most you can put in at once is one Pokémon in for two moves, or two Pokémon in for one move each.

UPDATE: 30/04/12 – This is now merged with the Pokémart, and there is no wait time.

    The Dream World Center
The Dream World Center is where you can pick up Dream World abilities for your Pokémon. It works in the same way as the Daycare Center, where you can leave one or two Pokémon in for 24 hours at the cost of $5000 per ability.
    The Underground
The Underground is the place to go if you're feeling lucky! Once per month, you can pay the low cost of $2500 to venture down and potentially dig up some great items! While sometimes you can lose money, there are other times when you can find rare items such as fossils! If you have any leftover cash, I'd recommend going here to see what you can find.

    The Auction Room
Occasionally, Pokémon are put under the hammer in the Auction Room. These Pokémon, usually of medium or so story rank, can be bid on in increments of $500, where the final bidder gets the Pokémon. While for a lot of you it'll be a while before you start to earn as much cash as the older members, in the future it's worth checking out every so often.

    WHAT TO BUY

Okay, so now you know what you can buy here, I'm going to offer my opinion on what I think you should buy early on. Of course, you don't need to listen to my advice, but I would recommend checking out a couple of these powerful Pokémon.

    Dragonite
All of the pseudo-legends are equally as powerful in the URPG as they are in-game, and Dragonite is no exception. Graced with the fantastic Multiscale Dream World ability and somewhat bulky defences, it is reasonably hard to kill, giving it time to stat up and do some serious damage to your opponent. Be sure to buy Multiscale and some good coverage moves.

    Togekiss
While Togekiss is a great support Pokémon, it's just as able to take out an opponent or two with a mix of good moves and stats. It's ability, Serene Grace, is great in conjunction with moves such as Air Slash, which now is boosted to a 60% chance of a flinch. One of the only problems is the cost – it requires quite a few TM's to be useful, and the evolution items bring the total cost to 10000 even before buying extra moves. Super Luck isn't needed, but buy as many moves as possible – special moves are recommended due to it's huge Sp. Atk stat.

    Electivire
One of the best features of Electivire is its diverse moveset. As well as having a rather high attack stat, it can inflict super-effective damage on almost every single type. Invest on some physical moves early on, and you'll reap the rewards. In battle, an expert belt will help you a lot, and I recommend bringing it with you.

    Tyranitar
The second of the psuedos on my list, Tyranitar's only hindrance is it's relatively poor speed. Luckily, it has access to Dragon Dance which, while boosting it to a more reasonable speed, can add to it's monstrous attack stat for big hits on the opponent. However, be careful of any Pokémon with a fighting-type move, or you might not be able to get the boost up. A nice little bonus is the Sp. Def increase due to Sand Stream.

    Sceptile
Sceptile is a pretty effective mixed attacker, making use of a great speed, above average special attack and an alright attack stat (however, this can be boosted via Swords Dance). This is another Pokémon with quite a high coverage, and can easily get a few kills before being taken down itself.

    Closing Notes

Although I've given you a little guide on what to buy, you should only choose them if they suit your style of play. There are other great Pokémon in the Pokémart, but I'll be writing about them next week – if you're interested in Blaziken, Swampert, Salamence, Metagross, Infernape or Hydreigon I'd recommend checking it out. Until next time (ie. later in the issue), see you later.

Battle Analysis- Returning Dinosaur Pwns Vet
    By Xali

I’d like to welcome back a URPG Member as old as the URPG itself. AKDude!!
This guy is cool and apparently a better battler than me….. A few days ago he came back after a two year hiatus. He was in the URPG Chat and casually asked to battle anybody, so I took up his offer not knowing what I was about to get myself into. This URPG Dinosaur gave me a run for my money in an awesome 6v6 battle that a few people had fun watching. Being the nub I am, I randomly rolled out my mons while AK systematically wore them down and rightfully obtained victory.

At first I led with Celebi which was pretty much the only high point of the battle for me since it weakened about half his team. Celebi managed to get an Ancient Power boost on his lead Umbreon and prevented it from recovering by using Heal Block. Jynx then came in and replaced Umbreon only to be wiped out by Ancient Power. AK sent Salamence and finally KO’d Celebi, and with Celebi’s demise my momentum also fell. My Heracross put up a good fight and even managed to send Salamence scurrying away in fear after having Endured a Fly attack and going for the Feint. Butterfree came in for Mence and this little bug managed to KO mine. Then my Scizor came in, A BATTLE OF BUGS! Butterfree’s Sleep Powder missed giving Scizor a free Swords Dance and the following turn it avenged Heracross with a Quick Attack KO. AK sent Charizard which missed a Heatwave allowing Scizor to score a hit. Ak Then realized he had Flamethower and used that instead as I sent Quick Attack to do one last turn of damage. My Scizor was cooked instantly. Blissey came in and Charizard also took it out. I then sent Gallade which missed a Stone Edge and Charizard once again capitalized. I only hit it once and it KO’d my mon. I was down 5-2 and my last mon was Mismagius which managed to claw its way back up by outspeed Zard, Umbreon and Mence. At 5-5 the game was close, but Mismagius had taken some damage and AKDude’s Gengar seized the opportunity to make me look like the noob I’ve been since joining in 2006. GG AKDude, and again, welcome back to the URPG! :p

    Staff Report
    By ChainReaction

Hello to everyone, and welcome to all of our new TPW friends! The URPG Times is published every two weeks, and in each week I post a few snippets of information about the Staff and what we get up to in our private boards and hidden chats and secret ninja lairs.

No secrets this week, though – on behalf of the Staff, I just want to say hello to everyone and welcome to the URPG! Us Staffers are responsible for the continuation and balance of the URPG as a whole, and if you ever have any questions are comments any one of us would be more than happy to listen.
I think I’ll end this Staff Section short and sweet. I encourage all of you to come along to the Meet the Staff Event that’s on in a few days – we don’t bite! Enjoy your time in the URPG, everyone. It’s great to be here.

    -Chainy

    Closing Comments

I'd like to say welcome one more time to our new friends at TPW and once again thank all of the members of the URPG for this awesome issue of the URPG Times and the work they've put into preparing for the expansion. YAY FOR EVERYONE!
