    Prologue

Once Maya dreamt she was a Beautifly, a Beautifly flitting and fluttering around, happy with herself and doing as she pleased. Maya didn’t know she was Human. Suddenly she woke up, and there she was, solid and unmistakable Maya.

Maya spent many nights trying to enter her dream of a being a Beautifly, but to no avail. She wept as she enjoyed flying free through the wind and grew weary of being limited to the ground. In her dream, she didn’t have to worry about her chores or her family; she didn’t even know they existed as she slept. She despised her life for she knew it wasn’t a dream.

The Old Ones saw her sadness and granted her wish: to wake up from her dream as a Human.

Maya awoke as a Beautifly once again, happy that being a Human was the dream. She once again flitted and fluttered through the currents. Things were good, until one day a storm passed. She was flung carelessly throughout the sky, but this wasn’t enough to quell her spirits.

The winds threw her towards an island. There Maya took rest on a branch as her beautiful wings were soaked. She soon found a male Human napping beneath nearby tree. She watched as two female Human walking hand in hand skipped towards the sleeping Human. The smaller of the female Human rushed in front of the taller Human and hugged the male, who awoke with a smile on his face.

Maya drew even closer and saw that she knew these Human: they were the family she dreamt about. They looked happy, hugging and laughing together. She began to cry, missing the life she once had.

The Old Ones descended from their perch above the Sky Dome. “We thought you wanted to wake up from your dream?” the Old Ones asked the small Beautifly. The girl regretted her choice and asked to sleep again.

Maya awoke in her bed, the sunlight rushing through the window, and she remembered everything that had happened in her dream. She ran into her little sister’s room and hugged her tight. Her parents walked in, hearing the ruckus. She hugged them too and said that she loved them. Confused, the family started laughing at the serene moment.

Together, they were happy. Maya was happy once again. Then, a breeze entered the room. Maya looked over and saw a Beautifly perched on the tree outside her house looking in at them, crying.
