    A Very Buneary Morning [Complete]

I did some more experimenting with this and I was pretty happy with how it came out xD
Hope to experiment more with later pieces and learn new things.
For now though, another picture I've finished that I didnt think would get finished so quickly.

    Pokemon I'm catching: Buneary
    Rank: Medium

    @Sou Cleife;

Edit: Okay, so if I was smart I would pay attention to the title and know it's a sunrise, but my points still stand.

    Form

The forms here look great. Nothing sticks out too awkwardly or seems like it doesn't fit. I'm a fan of the colored outlines around the Buneary parts instead of the black ones. The colored ones don't stick out as much as the darker ones and help smooth everything out.

The Pokemon do stick out a lot from the background, though. I can't tell for sure if it's not a good thing or not. On one hand, it ensures that the Pokemon are emphasized and eye-drawing, but on the other, it sort of breaks the unity with the piece, as if they're not actually a part of the setting. I like both styles, but I'm not sure if they mesh or not.

The only other thing is maybe taking a look at the fluff on the Buneary's ears. The idea from the official art is that the fur is on the top of the ear—showing why it's still perfectly visible when the rabbit scrunches up its ears to punch things. However, here it seems that in the foreground, the fur is attached on the back of the ear. And the Buneary in the middle ground has the fur attached to the front of the ear. I'm not fussed so much that it's slightly different from the official art, but it's sort of strange to see them different on two Pokemon.

Also, it is just me, or does the Buneary in the foreground... have no arms? I dunno, either its holding them sort of awkward in front of itself or they're gone. Weird.

    Technique

No complaints here. Shadows and highlights look good, giving shape to the Buneary. I also see it in the ground, giving those hills some dimension. Awesome. I do wonder about the angle of light though. Usually in the early morning or evenings, shadows are stretched longer because of the lower sun angle than when they're high above at noon and more straight down. You could've maybe taken a little more advantage of that.

Some of the highlights might also be a little too defined for such low light. I do like the slight glow effect, since sun does do that, but I think it's maybe curved around the body of the Buneary a little much instead of hovering on the edge like a burst of light would when eclipsed behind something. This applies particularly to the closest Buneary. The light wraps around the back of the head, but the sun isn't really striking there if it's rising/setting on the other side of the field.

On that same Buneary and the one in mid ground, the line between highlight/shadow is a little harsh as well. It's pretty visible, and that could maybe be smoothed out a little more to match the rest of the design. Everything else looks really smooth, but the lines between highlights and normal fur are a little too defined.

    Background

I love that your art is just so nice to look at. I especially love the background in this one. It's semi-realistic which is not something we get to see very often with Pokeart. I think I'd enjoy a comic in this style. It's a little reminiscent of a greeting card. Take from that what you will.

Like I mentioned before, the background realistic style is in complete contrast with the more simple cartoon-like appearance of the Buneary, but some people like that drastic difference. Just keep it in mind for future pieces; only you can decide if the effect is something you want.

I'm also curious about the sky. I mentioned the shadows from the light, but I'm also wondering about the sky. Is it a little too blue for a sunrise/sunset? I know when the sun comes up, it's often very orange/reddish close to the horizon and the darker purples/blues occur a little higher up.

Overall, it looks really great. I definitely want to see more art in this style from you!

    Result
    Spoiler:

Great work. There are a few minor technical things and a little bit of a clash between the cartoon style of the Buneary and the realistic background, but it still looks good. I'm scoring this 50/45, meaning Buneary is captured!
