    Winter Writing Competition 2015

Out of the depths of a barren, snowy wasteland... there came light.

It came like a badly-formatted meme from a TV show that a lot of people only pretend to read because you really can't watch it in public without a lot of forewarning because of all the blood and naked people.

    /|*| winter writing competition 2015|*|\

That's right. Winter (Writing Competition 2015) is Coming. Featuring 666% more illuminati reasons why I don't do art.

Well, actually, it's already here, and it's in this very thread. Button up your overcoat, grab your hot cocoa, procrastinate on studying for your finals, because it's your time to shine! Fame, eternal glory, virtual cash, are all on the line! These sentences are all starting to rhyme! It's the Winter Writing Competition, and now's your time!

this is why we can't let me do poems

    /|*| submission guidelines |*|\

    • You may submit a story from December 10, 12:01 am (CST) to January 10, 12:01 am (CST); any story posted before or after this time frame will be deemed ineligible for this competition.
    • Submission is as easy as posting a story across any of the three forums and then linking to it in this thread.
    • You may write as many stories during this time period as you wish! However, you may only submit one story into the WWC. Please put WWC somewhere in your thread title for grader convenience.
    • Your entry can be no longer than 150,000 characters.
    • You must be a member of the URPG to participate in the WWC. If you're not a URPGer yet, go sign up! We'd love for you to participate!
    • Our warning for graphic content still applies

    /|*| voting guidelines |*|\

    • Stories will be voted on in rounds after submissions close. In addition to getting the thrill of awesome literature, you can also get mad cash, so give it a whirl!
    • You must be a member of the URPG to vote. Sign up here to become a URPGer!
    • When voting, vote for your favorite story within the round, not necessarily your favorite person. Winners of this competition should be selected by the depth of creativity and talent featured in the story, not by personality popularity ratings.
    • If your story is featured in a round, you can still vote without harming your standing! In fact, you'll get an extra three points for voting in the round your story is featured in! What's not allowed is voting for yourself. That'd be too awkward.
    • Voters will receive 3k for voting, claimable at the end of that round. There's something special for those who vote in every single round!
    • Voting time frame and total rounds will be announced once the submission window closes. There will be preliminary rounds, and then a final round!
    • When voting, send me a private message with the stories you liked the best in that round, with 1 being your favorite story and 3 being your least favorite story in that round. The story that has the highest combined tally in that round will win that round!
    • Include a two-sentence summary of the story in your private message. For instance:

A young Mewtwo must make it on her own in a mysterious underground city full of espionage and secrets and the mysterious Breloominati order. Although, as she uncovers the dark past about her hometown, she learns even more about herself...

    2. The Catcher in the Raichu: A stunning exploration of a young Raichu who wants to defy everything--his parents, his friends, and even society itsef--to fulfill his dream of becoming a Pokemon trainer. I was a little put-back by how the author didn't deal with the fact that Sparky the Raichu was kidnapping his own friends, but it made for a fascinating psychological thriller. Also, the ninja pirates were a great touch!

    3. Flygon With the Wind: This story was interesting, but given that 95% of the dialogue consisted of variations on "Flaahhh-gonnn" in an astonishing variety of southern accents, I had some issues following the plot. The charcters were large dragons, but they were also pretty one-dimensional, and it was hard to get invested in their story--in fact, frankly, my dear, I didn't give a darn.

In light of the, uh, small amount of entries thus far, there will be a one week extension. The new closing deadline is 11:59 PM (CST/GMT-6) on Monday, January 17.

    Enjoy responsibly, friends.

YEAH SO THIS DATE... DOESN'T EXIST.

Um. In the interest of the massive outcry of sadness I started on AIM, you guys will have until Monday, not until the 17th. This means that the final deadline is in approximately twenty-four hours.

    ...my bad.

    this is totally on time

    IT HAPPENED.

OUT OF THE DEPTHS OF A BARREN WASTELAND, THERE WAS IMMENSE LIGHT AS ALL OF YOU GUYS WROTE BEAUTIFUL STORIES AND I BROKE MY CAPS LOCK WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CONVEY MY EXTREME HAPPINESS THAT THIS WAS A THING.

You've done the communal crying/support on AIM. You've done the mailing of the sacrifices for the one week extension. You've done the last minute writing period. And now you will have the ultimate chance to see which story is best. The random number generator has been set, the rounds have been determined, and it's time to d-d-d-d-d-duel!

    ROUND ONE

    while we wait for wifi
    Timmy
    Bat Fowling

Aaaaand that's the first round! Voting guidelines are in the original post of this thread. Please send your love, votes, social security number, etc. by PM to me no later than 11:59 PM (CST) on Monday, January 25th

this is important: submissions are now locked. Please, for the fairness of all our competitors, do not edit your story until 1) WWC is over or 2) your story is no longer in the competition.

This was a tight round, with a children's fairytale squaring off against a post-apocalypse story of epic proportions facing avian tragedy-turned-cheerful. Who will reign victorious in the end? Only time will tell. But for this round, the people have spoken!

    Spoiler:
In third place, with a total of eighteen points comes Big Daddy V's Timmy. Whimsically written in the form of a children's story, this work is sure to delight!

In second place, with a total of twenty-eight points is Smiles's while we wait for wifi. Apocalypse, ghosts, disaster, and more lurk in the beautiful prose of this dark tale!

And, in first place, with a grand total of thirty-two points, we have Winter Vines's Bat Fowling! Take to the skies as moon and sunbirds strike off in young love and learn that the other holds more than meets the eye! And, uh, sad things still happen.

Give it up for the fantastic three in our first round! And also to our fabulous voters!
    @WinterVines; @Felly; @Mikey57; @Elrond 2.0; @dylanpiera @Ace Trainer Liam; @Big Daddy V; @Soulmaster; @Smiles; @Neonsands; @The Protobabe; @Seppe;

You guys can all claim 3k for your reading and voting efforts! Post in-thread to claim.

And, without further ado, let's jump right in to the next round! Votes will be due via forum PM to me at 11:59 PM (CST/GMT-6) on Monday, February 1st!

The name of the game this week was... horror, apparently! Ghosts, supernatural, drama, or rhyme, the stories were sure to delight this time!

    lol poetry

    And the results are in:
    Spoiler:
In fourth place, with four points, comes Monbrey's time-honored epic, The Poem. Exactly what it says on the tin, folks.

In third place, with eleven points, we have Mikey57's Behind the Mask, featuring kids following each other lemming-style into a haunted mansion... for science! And screaming!

In second place, with fifteen points, give it up for Neonsand's Pleasant Dinner Conversation. This story will leave you hungry for more. Literally. Maybe.

And, our winner for this round, with eighteen points, we have Elrond 2.0's The Seat of Wisdom! A thrilling tale of a kid whose life just keeps getting worse, you'll wonder who's really so wise about this stuff after all.

    A lovely 3,000 to our wonderful voters! Post in-thread to claim: @WinterVines; @Felly; @Elrond 2.0; @dylanpiera; @Soulmaster; @Seppe; @Mikey 57;

Whoops! This round got a little too excited with the wonders of late-night problem sets while drinking coffee and chatting with friends. Totally not based on a true story.

Without any further ado, it's time for the results!

    And the results are in:
    Spoiler:
In third place, with fourteen points, comes dylanpiera's The Chronicles of the Soar: Chapter 1! The first story in what is sure to be a thrilling adventure, this forray into the After Hours universe is only the first step. Wingflap?

In second place, with twenty points, give it up for Seppe's Saving My Soul from the Depths of Elysium. This story was named after me! Just kidding! It's actually a heartbreaking tale full of love, loss, and also time travel.

And, our winner for this round, with twenty-six points, we have Ace Trainer/Surfer Liam's Stardust! High school drama meets Pokemon in this adorable tale, and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

    A lovely 3,000 to our wonderful voters! Post in-thread to claim: @WinterVines; @Felly; @Elrond 2.0; @dylanpiera; @Soulmaster; @Seppe; @Mikey57;
