The Litterbug

Once upon a time, there lived in a small village a young boy called Cadby. Now Cadby was famed in the village for reasons that invoked the disapproval of many and the ire of many more than that. Cadby was the son of a powerful lord, and was sent to this village to learn of the ways of the commoners, something which his father insisted as being “educational”. But Cadby, being the bright boy that he was, knew that educational was merely the same word for punishment.

How the villagers came to despise Cadby, however, was not because of him being the son of the lord; in any case Cadby’s father was one of the kinder rulers than one would expect at the time. It was because Cadby was—as the villagers were hearing from the town crier presently—a litterbug; and as Cadby also knew, this was the same reason that got him seemingly exiled to the village in the first place.

“Hear ye! Hear ye! Oyez! Cadby—son of Lord Carfang of Laverre—is at it yet again!” yelled the crier, ringing a Miltankbell in hand.

And that he was. With his snowy hair, a toothy grin, and a sack of lime-colored Wepear Berries at hand, Cadby was littering in the street once more! Wepear cores flew left and right and down to the ground! Some villagers had come out of their houses or peered through their windows, but they could do nothing about it. Lord Carfang may have been kind, the villagers thought, but obviously he would be less so if something were to happen to his son. They had tried all they could and had told off Cadby numerous times before, but nothing seemed to change. Housewives just shook their heads and went back inside their homes, as some of the other villagers went to pick up Cadby’s mess.

Then one day, when Cadby was strolling (and still littering!) through the wood behind the village, something strange happened. Cadby was just about to throw his fifth Berry core—Leppa this time—when a dazzling white light flashed before him. The flash lasted for a second, and when Cadby reopened his eyes, a tall woman was in front of him! The woman had long, snowy hair not unlike Cadby’s, and was dressed in a white, flowing garment decorated with red and blue triangular patterns. Her countenance was serene but evidently quite unhappy.

Cadby was awestruck as fear paralyzed him. The mysterious woman looked at him straight in the eye and remained silent for a short time before finally addressing the boy.

“I am the patron of this wood,” the woman began, her words sounding dreamlike and melodic, “and I have been watching you.”

Cadby wanted to run, but found himself unable to move.

“I have seen you from afar, littering so unabashedly in the village,” the woman continued. “I will not tolerate such an insult in my domain. You will have to be punished.”

Then the strange woman began chanting an equally strange song, which sounded like a susurrus of various woodland Pokémon. Slowly, the same light that had come before the woman’s appearance surrounded Cadby, and when it was gone, so too was the boy!

For in his place there now stood a small, black bodied worm of a Pokémon, with the same colored hair and the same toothy grin as Cadby’s.

The woman then spoke again, in a much more forbidding tone: “You will be the first Scatterbug, and this curse will have you release constantly a black powder from your body until the end of your days.”
