Wouldn't make sense to have a level 1 Cubone to have an Attack stat of 160 (I dunno, I just chose a random number). What I was thinking was to use rare candies and contests as replacements of the battle requirements of a Pokémon. For example, Charmander needs to been in five battles to evolve into Charmeleon, but what instead of five battles, five contests, or 3 battles and two rare candies, and so on. Of course, used rare candies might what to be written down in the stats.
There is no reason to do that, though. Levels and stats would not only involve huge amounts of needless calculations, but also remove a good reason why anyone would choose URPG battling over any main-series game in the first place. People are already complaining about how it will take more effort/money to make the switch to Rare Candies and 2v2; requiring 20 battles to get a Raticate seems pretty counter intuitive.

In what way? I actually don't see anything wrong with the mechanics of the battles themselves at all (if that's what you're referring to). The issues lie in the rate of earning money and methods of evolution.

Sometimes we can't see what's right in front of us. Only when we take a step back can we see more clearly. ;)

If all you want to do is stop basics, then stop promoting them. Stop telling new members that's how their first battles should happen. Let Trainers battle how they want to battle; don't tell them this is how they have to battle. Part of the fun of an RPG is figuring out how to play on your own. Promote engaging and fun battles and not a bunch of repetitious "gg1", "gg2", "gg3".... But will it be possible to promote good battles? hmmm...

Have you ever bought a new computer? You get it out of the box and it's all shiny and runs fast. You're like "yea, this is super cool." Years and years and years go by. You've downloaded so many add-ons to your computer that it's become sluggish and unresponsive. You don't know anything about computers so you try to fix it on your own, but these problems eventually come back. Frustrated, you yell "why isn't this working right??" You hire a tech to check out your computer and he mentions there's so much to remove that a System Reboot would be the best option to fix everything and start anew.

Wouldn't you like to have a shiny, brand new computer again? You asked for an alternative, I provided. Rare candies will only slow your computer down even more. Once again, if you're willing to consider a reconstruction project, all you have to do is ask.

I do like the idea of not telling new players how to do their battles (and it would be nice to see less of that), but it does not fix the entire issue. Many of the problems occur more among older players getting new Pokémon. It also still does nothing to provide alternatives to those entirely uninterested in using battles to evolve Pokémon or who do get bored of it even without being driven to do it that particular way by force.

We could set up a Training Center for new players less than a month old. My idea was that new players would bank their Pokemon in the Training Center and leave them there for a certain amount of time, let's say one week. Within that time the Pokemon would evolve once, and once only. For Pokemon that only have two evolutions, the process would take twice as long. For special cases like Slowpoke to Slowking, the Training Center would only take care of the 5 battle requirements of the evolutions, so the Trainer would have to take care of the trading and whatnot himself. To make sure new players don't become too OP, for Pokemon with 3 evolutions, you may only evolve once. So you can train Charmander into a Charmeleon, but not into a Charizard. The player would have to evolve Charmeleon themselves. Now for cases like Riolu, and other baby pokemon, the Training Center would only fill up the battling requirements, just like Slowpoke. However, for Riolu, since he evolves into a Lucario, a fully evolved Pokemon, it would take twice the time it would take Charmander to Charmeleon, so let's say two weeks. Because getting fully evolved Pokemon in a week would be far too easy and not fair to the rest of the URPG.

Was that too complicated? I'm just spit balling here, but it does look like a good idea. New players would have to worry about battling with their already weak Pokemon. Also it was a 1 month period for a new player to use the Training Center. By one month you should be getting used to the URPG and already have somewhat of a foot to stand on.

So you're saying that if you're new and only if you're new, you should wait two weeks to actually use your Pokémon?
