A Gambler's Sin
Month 05
Monkey Wrench in the System
Part 1
Another week rolled by with similar success. Gems, gems, and more gems. He’d become quite the popular person of the month. He even had some diggers dig around the areas he was, hoping they’d find something good as well. Some were good but most were what he considered ‘trash’ items. And while their verdict didn’t have any effect on his own game, it was bothersome that others were trying to capitalize on his gains. But this happened in casinos as well. Gold diggers would follow the winners to become friends and mooch off them.
Vultures. That’s what they were.
In a gutsy move, he renewed his membership for another month before his current one expired. At this point, he figured he could make the money back before the bank statement came in. Any noticeable amount of money that were to be missing would be caught by his wife and he’d be in deep trouble. As long as his luck continued, he wouldn’t have to worry about that. He over-confidently smiled to himself, knowing that one day he will have to explain why there was more money in their account.
However, Rick didn’t realize that his past mistakes were going to catch up to him.
-
It was just another day of the week. The Vultures weren’t out in full, yet. The usual suspects knew that he never dug until late afternoon, after all his journal taking and watching others was over. When he finally went out to a desired location, only one person was creeping at a distance. Rick set his stuff down inside the cave, ready to swing his pickaxe...
*GURGLE*
Rick hunched over, grabbing his stomach. All the sudden he had to go to the bathroom. Placing his pickaxe down, he shuffled through the cave back to the main buildings. Feeling better, he made his way back. There, at the spot he placed his things, a Vulture was digging in his zone.
“Hey!” he yelled out defensively.
The Vulture turned, wiping his brow after taking his own rented pickaxe from the wall. He responded sheepish, “Oh, uh, hi.”
Rick stormed over to him, still yelling. “What are you doing?”
“Digging. Thought you might like some company.”
As he approached, he noticed within the wall something had been partially uncovered. “Get out of here! This is my spot!”
He crossed his arms. “There’s plenty of cave here, friend. Surely we can share.”
Too upset to talk, Rick grabbed his pickaxe and held it threateningly in the air, motioning at the Vulture. “Don’t make me use this.”
Vulture took a step back, holding his own axe at his side, but not aimed to use it. “Hey man, chill...” Rick took a swing at him, purposely missing but sending a message of intent. Vulture decided to run off. He wasn’t going to get his scraps this day.
“And don’t let me catch you near me again!” He took a deep breath and focused back to his work.
