Aleria had been taking it slow for a bit when it came to park runs. Rumor had it that there would be a big event coming soon involving the new shipment of Kalos Pokemon that would be coming in. If there was anything she'd learned, it was that she was smart to take it easy.

To put it simply, the line for those wishing to enter the park was long. Apparently event runs got a lot of interest.

Well, that may have been a bit of an understatement.

All of that was besides the point, however. There was a line now, and that line needed to be shortened sooner rather than later. Her PDA beeped (thankfully after she'd already woken up and showered; it was like they knew she was sleeping and had actually waited until she'd woken up and showered for once), signalling the need for her services, and her eyes scanned the message that she'd received.

To the Woods she went, and Riza was her transportation, the orange dragon-like Pokemon soaring through the skies. Al made a quick stop at the nearby Ranger Outpost to grab some last minute supplies that she'd most likely need for the run, and then she found herself waiting outside of the park gates that led into the woods.

Her first expedition into the Woods not only as a Ranger, but her first with the new Kalos Pokemon in the park. This would definitely be an exciting experience, and Aleria could only hope that her trainer would show up soon.

Ever since taking Ecruteak Gym, life had taken a somewhat interesting turn. While before I had just wandered about out of curiosity and collected whatever Pokemon looked interesting to raise, it all changed upon taking a Leader position. Not only was I finally tied down to one place, but there were responsibilities as well- mostly defending the Gym, but still. It was good to finally have an occupation in life, and other than a few random setbacks it all ran fairly smoothly.

One day, after a friendly sparring match with a wandering Fisher, I was told that the Park was increasing its wildlife population once more. My duties to the Gym prevented entering the area for a long time now, so I listened to what the man had to say.

They're adding two brand-new areas, and new Pokemon to boot!” the Fisher exclaimed, waiting for his Qwilfish to be healed at the Center. “They're supposed to be from the far-off Kalos region...maybe you can get some new-fangled Ghosts for your team? No offense, ma'am, but a couple of them didn't really flow into your team quite right.”

It's worth a shot,” I admitted. “Do you know when they're hosting the event?”

About a couple days from now,” the Fisher replied, handing me an updated pamphlet. “Good luck to you! I plan to visit the Beach, myself...”

The Beach would help a lot, I thought to myself, going over the brochure. I had needed a Jellicent for a while, and it would add variety to my Gym. Upon looking further though, I saw that for a limited time all areas would have an increased amount of the new wildlife- if I entered now, may as well go for them instead. Curious to see just what would be added, I headed back to the Gym to make preparations for a temporary closing.

    A few days later...

Remind me to never head to the Park early again,” I grumbled, trying my best to fight off sleep and begin my day. The past couple of days had been eventful to say the least; first I had signed up to visit an area of the Park I had yet to explore, then a Ranger that I had done some freelance work for in the past had roped me into somehow taking a Run. While it had been an interesting experience, I wasn't going to do any more favors for a long time.

<Was it really that bad? It was extra money, after all,> Zen commented. The Gallade was walking beside me, both of us finally heading towards the front gate that would take us into the Woods.

It's more the fact that it was completely unexpected,” I replied. In all truth, it hadn't really been that bad after all; it was interesting to see Runs through a Ranger's point of view, even though it was hard to not interfere when a Trainer was struggling. However... “We came here to add more teammates to our roster and possibly relax, not cover up for the Park's mistakes. What would Makina have done if I hadn't of arrived ahead of schedule?”

<Probably call in another Ranger,> the Gallade said, rolling his eyes. <Just relax. The past is done, and if we're lucky today will be smooth sailing.>

I said nothing, opting to just walk in silence. The Gym now had an empty roster, thanks to the League discontinuing their policy of allowing a “wildcard” Pokemon on a Leader's team so long as it somewhat fit with their Gym's theme. I had to remove my Absol, which meant I needed to fill the slot soon. There were rumors that two new Ghost Pokemon had been found, both that had Grass as their secondary type; what better place to check than a zone that was full of plants?

Eventually, we made it towards the front gate leading to the Woods. Nearby, a Ranger was looking about as if expecting someone to show up. I didn't recognize her, but that wasn't really surprising. Seeing that no one else was around, I walked over to her and introduced myself. “I don't suppose you're my Ranger? I'm Akinai, and the Gallade beside me is Zen.”

"Nice to meet you, Akinai," Aleria greeted once her trainer and her Gallade, nicknamed Zen, arrived. "I'm Aleria, and I'll be taking you through the woods today." Nodding, she moved to unlock the gate and push it open, waiting for Akinai and Zen to walk past the open gate before locking it shut again. As the Gallade walked by her, Aleria made a mental note to go on a park run of her own some time and try to get a Ralts. Her friend had traded hers away for a Hydreigon she needed for her new Dark type gym in that new Kalos region. Damn shame that was. Al knew how much she liked the Gallade she'd nicknamed Blade, and it probably hurt to trade him away. At least it had been for a good cause. She could take one of those discs that recorded the calls of Pokemon with her, increase her chances of running into one and all that jazz.

Akinai had a PokePlayer with her, now that Aleria thought about it. In the time she'd spent waiting for her trainer that she was now leading into the woods, Aleria had taken the time to thoroughly read the message she'd received about Akinai and how prepared she was for the park. Four Pokemon and quite a few items. A Litwick voice disc too, not that it would be useful her in the woods. Litwick were seen in a different area of the park. The other voice disc lacked a recording, which was a bit of a shame, but Aleria assumed she was saving it for a different time, when she was eager to catch something.

Their first was a purple moth with wide blue eyes that only got wider as it crossed Akinai, Zen, and Aleria's path. At least it was something Aleria recognized instantly and not one of those new Kalos Pokemon that she barely knew a thing about. She'd snagged a new guide book and stuffed it in her bag at the Ranger Outpost just outside of the entrance gate to the woods, and considering that it was the latest edition, it would have all of the information on those Kalos Pokemon that were free to run rampant in the park. Venomoth was not from Kalos though, and Aleria knew that. It was nice to know she wouldn't have to go digging in a book to match the real thing with a picture just yet. She turned her attention to Akinai. "Looks like we've got a Venomoth here. You interested?"

    @Felly;

OOC: I almost counted MCR for your post out of habit x.x

The Ranger returned the greeting immediately, introducing herself as Aleria. As she opened the gate for us to enter though, her eyes followed Zen as the Gallade passed by. I didn't think much of it, as most people seemed uneasy around the species due to the fact they had large blades on their arms. Zen, on the other hand, didn't look too happy about being watched. Something wrong? She seems polite enough, and you're acting as if she thinks you're about to chop off her head, I silently asked the Gallade.

<It's more like she's sizing me up,> Zen replied, a feeling of uneasiness passing over the link. <Almost as if I'm being compared to someone.>

Now who is on edge, I relayed back, lightly teasing the Gallade. She probably sees a lot of Gallade around here, so you remind her of them. Not hearing another response from Zen, I focused on the walk ahead instead. It was my first time in the Woods, and I knew nothing about the area despite the name; it would probably be smart to pay attention on how the Pokemon acted around here.

It wasn't long before one of the locals showed up, apparently curious to see a new face. It was a large insectoid Pokemon, its violet wings flapping lazily as it hovered in front of us.

Looks like we've got a Venomoth here. You interested?” Aleria asked.

I'll pass. Venomoth is nice, but I don't see myself using one,” I replied. “If it doesn't want to let us pass, I can use a Doll.”

Maybe it was just her, but the Gallade seemed a bit uneasy that she'd just watched it, getting lost in her own train of thought in the process. It was probably just her though. She pushed the thoughts to the back of her mind. If Gallade didn't like her, he'd just have to get over it, really. They were stuck together until Akinai went through all of her encounters or decided to leave, whichever came first.

"I'll pass. Venomoth is nice, but I don't see myself using one," Akinai replied. "If it doesn't want to let us pass, I can use a Doll."

Aleria nodded, and she started to walk around the Venomoth, who surprisingly let them by. They were in the clear! No doll needed!

But then Aleria could hear the fluttering of Venomoth's wings as they walked, and she frowned just a little bit. She loved the park, but the Pokemon here could be so annoying if they didn't just know when to leave you alone. "Looks like we're going to need the doll after all. This one is one tricky little Venomoth." She stopped for a moment, taking the doll from Akinai, and tossed it out into the trees. Venomoth naturally followed it, and the purple moth fluttered out of sight, using String Shot to grab onto the doll and most likely bring it back to his or her lair.

With Venomoth out of their way, they continued on. The best part about the Woods was that there was a path they could follow, and Pokemon occasionally crossed that path. While they could stray off the beaten path, Aleria preferred to stay on the main trail for now. Later, they could go into the depths of the woods and find some more interesting stuff. They'd reached a fork in the road, with one path blocked off by a Pokemon that had a large stone on its orange body. A Crustle, Aleria noted, and another Pokemon not from the Kalos region. It was a shame, really. She would've thought that the new Kalos Pokemon would want to come out and play, or at least some of the more brave ones because some Pokemon were shy.

Nevertheless, they had a Crustle, and the orange Pokemon perked up a little at the sight of Aleria, Akinai, and her Gallade. Al shrugged, glancing over at her trainer. "Would you like a Crustle?"

Surprisingly, Venomoth didn't seem to mind that I had no interest to battle it. In an even rarer act, the Bug-type moved aside to clear the path for us to cross; something that was unlike the simpleminded mindset that most of the species had. I wasn't going to look a gift Ponyta in the mouth though, so walked past along with Aleria.

Zen stared at the strange wild Pokemon for a moment, wondering why it had easily stepped aside. Finally the Gallade moved to catch up, though he seemed less confident that the danger had passed. <When have any Bugs simply listened to anyone?>

Maybe it would have left alone in the first place anyways? I relayed back, giving a shrug. It seemed like Zen had been right to not believe we had successfully passed the Venomoth though... we had barely stepped five feet away when the sound of its fluttering wings could be heard very closely from behind us.

Looks like we're going to need the doll after all. This one is one tricky little Venomoth,” Aleria noted, looking over at the Pokemon who had decided stalking us would be best thing to do for today.

I tossed out a random Doll from my bag, not interested enough to see which Pokemon likeness it was before Venomoth snatched it away; I was on a hunt for Ghosts, not Bugs after all. Unfortunately, either this zone was full of Bug-types or some deity had decided to take interest in our Run. The next Pokemon we encountered was a crablike creature that was carrying an impressive stone block on his back.

Let's keep going,” I said, shaking my head at the Bug-type. Just in case this one was going to provide trouble as well, I readied another Doll.

Aleria nodded. Whatever Akinai was here for, it was not Bugs. That or she just really wasn't interested in the Venomoth and Crustle they'd encountered thus far. Either way, Aleria stepped towards the Crustle, hoping it would move out of their path. Lucky for them because it did. It scampered off to the side, eventually going down the opposite path. Al shrugged. "Looks like we won't need a doll for this one," she said, glancing over at Akinai, who had readied another doll just in case. "Guess we'll head down this path. Don't want to run into that Crustle again."

Of course the odds of that were pretty slim. There were other Pokemon in the Woods, and while Crustle was one of them, there was no definite guarantee they'd run into the same Crustle. Hell, there was no guarantee they'd even run into another Crustle at all. Better to be safe that sorry though. If Akinai didn't want this Crustle, there was no guarantee she'd want it if they ran into it again, or even if they ran into another Pokemon of the same species.

So they walked down the path Crustle had once been blocking. As they walked, Aleria's eyes were scanning the area, her eyes looking for their next encounter. There was some sudden shuffling in the bushes around them, and Al stopped, holding a hand out to stop Akinai and Zen from going any farther. Her eyes were focused on the bush that was rustling. Something was in there, and she wasn't quite sure what it was. She spoke softly. "You can come out, whatever you are. It's okay." Maybe it was a shy Pokemon. She didn't know. Al's words had encouraged it to come peeking out of the bush though. A small brown tree trunk with foliage around its wrists and at the top of its head, it was a Pokemon Aleria didn't recognize instantly.

She was about to look really stupid, she realized, as she pulled out her new guidebook. Flipping through the pages, Al occasionally glanced up at the tree-like Pokemon until she found the page with information on it. "Trevenant," she read aloud, looking up at the Pokemon and nodding. Yep, she'd found it in her fancy new guide book alright. "It's apparently called The Elder Tree Pokemon, and it's a Ghost and Grass type." She nodded again, turning to Akinai. "Would you like one? According to this fancy little updated guide book here, it's one of those new Kalos Pokemon."

As Aleria stepped forward, the Crustle reacted in turn. Instead of moving to block our path further though, the crablike Pokemon skittered out of the way and moved down a completely different trail. Maybe it had pressing business elsewhere, or just didn't want to deal with annoying Park-goers at the moment- either way, it saved me a Pokedoll.

Looks like we won't need a Doll for this one,” Aleria said with a shrug, noticing the plushie that I had pulled out. “Guess we'll head down this path. Don't want to run into that Crustle again.”

<I could have taken it, you know,> Zen grumbled, his tone so low I had almost not heard it over the link. I sneaked a look over at the Gallade, and saw that he was looking back the way we had just come from. From the wistful look on his face, it was almost like he was sulking. <There was no need to use one of those dolls.>

We need to conserve our energy for this Run, especially since you can only heal the others, I replied back, stowing away the plush Pikachu back in my bag. Besides, Crustle is a pain to battle, thanks to the fact we can't just use a single move and call it a day.

<Not that crab, I meant the moth,> Zen said back. His blade-arms were crossed, completing the look of a stubborn child- fully evolved Pokemon or not, there was hardly a better way to describe his current actions. <One or two strikes and it would have left us alone.>

By this time Aleria had moved on, so I hurried to catch up with the Ranger. Zen, thankfully, followed along as well. This at least gave me an excuse to delay in responding to my partner. Gallade were more martial-minded than Gardevoir, this was true on most of the species as whole and explained the duality between the two evolutions; Gallade as the attackers and Gardevoir as the defenders. Zen had always preferred to use his powers only for protection though... why was he now so interest in battling Pokemon for no reason other than clearing their way?

Come to think of it, most of my Pokemon had been lethargic lately. My duties in Ecruteak usually left no time to train the rest of my team save those used in the Gym, so the others were left to either spar among themselves or watch the occasional challenge every now and then. Gaard had been an exception for a short time thanks to his status as a wildcard, but had recently been pacing about more often lately once released from his Ball. With any luck, Zen was just bored as well and not developing a vicious streak.

Lost in my thoughts, I almost ran into Aleria when the Ranger had suddenly stopped. She had a hand out in warning, and was staring off to the side intently as if she had just seen something. After a few moments with no sight or sound of movement, she quietly said, “You can come out, whatever you are. It's okay.”

One of the nearby bushes rustled, and a leafy head poked out from the brush; I almost didn't notice it at first since the leaves blended in so well with the flora. As it stepped out fully into view, I saw that it was practically a miniature tree in appearance. The creature had a bark-like coating covering most of its body, though parts were uncovered to reveal coal-black skin or something similar to it. A single red eye was seen on its head, reminding me of a Dusclops.

Is this one of those Kalos Pokemon?” I asked aloud, staring at the creature. I had seen some on the Run I had helped out on earlier, each stranger than the last. One of the more formidable looking had been a large bat-like creature I had later learned was a Noivern- while this one didn't hold a candle to the Dragon-type, most Pokemon could.

Aleria looked just as confused, pulling out a small book and skimming through the pages. After pausing over a few entries and passing them over, she finally pointed out one of the pictures. “Trevenant. It's apparently called The Elder Tree Pokemon, and it's a Ghost and Grass type. Would you like one?”

...Well, that explains why this creature looked so much like a Dusclops. Through some surge of luck, we had managed to stumble upon just the Pokemon that I had been looking for. “Definitely! Also, mind telling me where you picked up that book once we're done here? I'm completely clueless on most of the Kalos Pokemon.”

<Finally, some action,> Zen said, stepping forward. He had adopted a battle stance, and was watching the Trevenant carefully. Considering how shy this Pokemon had been, it probably didn't appreciate such a gesture. <What is the first move?>

Whoa, back it up a bit! I tried to keep my tone calm, since there was no point to get angry this early in the Run. Zen's attitude today was beginning to get on my nerves though; first he had seemed paranoid, now he was charging into battles without warning. Just what was going on? I haven't decided which of you I was going to use yet. Maybe Anima, but that much fire around this many plants...

At that, Zen quickly swiveled about and locked his gaze with mine. <Don't even think about using that overgrown candle!> His stare was absolutely livid, and I could fear anger emanating from the Gallade. <You use her all the time at home.>

Zen, what in the world is wrong with you? I had never seen him act this way before, and it was more than a little jarring. If you have problems to say, can you wait until we're out of here?

<Just let me fight this,> Zen snapped back, turning his back to me. <You don't need to use Anima, trust me.>

I don't think you should if you're this angry-- I began, but the Gallade sealed his side of the link, giving a feeling like I was trying to direct thoughts to a wall. “All right, if you're going to be stubborn,” I said out loud, giving a sigh. If Zen got too zealous I would recall him, forcefully if need be. “Let's start out with a Future Sight to see how Trevenant reacts, then go with Poison Jab when ready.” I hated going into the offensive immediately, but Zen didn't look to be in the mood to do anything otherwise.

Zen's eyes began to glow a light blue color, readying the first part of his technique. If successful, he would be able to glimpse a future move against his opponent. Once completed, if he decided to actually act upon it, he would charge his second attack.

Aleria nodded, stepping back a bit to give the battlers their space. She was suddenly glad that she had as the Gallade suddenly turned on his trainer, and Aleria watched the situation, ready to send out one of her own Pokemon if the Gallade tried anything against his own trainer. Whatever had gotten into the Gallade, Aleria wasn't sure, but she hoped that the Trevenant wasn't the cause of it. If the tree-like Pokemon was the cause, she'd hate to see what the other Kalos Pokemon were like. The Gallade thankfully turned his attention back to the battle, and Al was able to ease up just a bit.

Gallade wasn't being too stubborn though, as he complied with Akinai's first commands of the battle. His eyes took on a blue glow; Future Sight was a move that allowed the user to see into the future. After some time passed, the Gallade would strike the Trevenant with the move it foresaw in the near future. In the meantime, Gallade would have to attack the Trevenant and defend himself, though based on how the Gallade turned on his trainer not too long ago, Aleria doubled that the latter would be happening any time soon.

As Gallade moved towards the tree-like Pokemon, his right blade arm suddenly took on a purple glow. Trevenant readied a blow himself, though, moving its arm back as if it were about to slam it into the ground. Poison Jab struck its target, and before Gallade even had the chance to move back, he was struck by Trevenant's fist, knocking the two Pokemon away from each other. The ghost tree breathed out a small ball of fire as it recoiled from its own attack that circled around the Gallade's body before breaking up into small pieces and scorching his green and white body, creating burns that made him wince.

The good thing was, Aleria didn't have to look through her book to see what moves Trevenant had just used. They weren't anything new, thankfully. "Looks like Wood Hammer and Will-o-Wisp," she commented, making a mental note to point out the new guide books to Akinai when they got back to the ranger outpost. It was nice to know she wasn't the only one who didn't know what all of these Kalos Pokemon were yet. "Not sure if this Trevenant has anything we've never seen before, but so far, it doesn't look like it does."

    OOC: Let's go with Male.

Everything started out well enough. Despite Zen's odd behavior, he readied both of his attacks with zeal. As soon as his temporary clairvoyance from Future Sight faded, the Gallade rushed in to smack the Trevenant with the blunt edge of one of his blade-arms in a jabbing motion. As the venomous attack landed, however, the tree finally decided to react. Right as Poison Jab made contact, Trevenant swung one of its bulky arms forward in the obvious intent of trying to swipe its annoying opponent away.

Zen, get out of there! I tried to call out to the Gallade, but the link was still sealed tight; in his own stubbornness, Zen was making this battle difficult right off the bat. Being unable to dodge in time, the Psychic-type was sent reeling as he was knocked back.

Trevenant was not done though. After flinching in pain, the Ghost managed to somehow belch a mote of flames towards Zen, the hue an all-too-familiar violet hue. I had used the move enough times in the past to recognize it on sight, and how Zen would be affected by the attack.

As the flames successfully burned the Gallade, I shook my head in annoyance. Dammit... Zen's attacks are mostly physical-based. We'll likely be here half of the day if I keep him out, and I have no way to treat that burn. Judging from the Pokemon's power, Trevenant was likely an evolved Pokemon or one that didn't evolve at all. If I wasn't careful, it could knock out Zen.

Not sure if this Trevenant has anything we've never seen before, but so far, it doesn't look like it does,” Aleria commented, keeping an eye on the battle. Judging from the book she had skimmed through earlier, it looked like the Rangers were still getting used to their new arrivals as well.

Well, it's a tree, so it can't have too many tricks--” I began, then remembered that it was supposed to be a Ghost Pokemon as well. If there was two things I had learned over the years it was never underestimate Ghosts, and never take the Park wildlife lightly. “Granted, it did just conjure fire,” I finished lamely.

Zen was already ready to fight once more, staring down his target while wincing from the rather nasty burn he had on the red protrusion on his chest. While he had not said a single word, vocally or mentally, the Gallade made it clear that he was willing to give his opponent another go.

Feeling the sealed wall over the link, I had to try hard to not just automatically recall the stubborn Gallade. I was used to going over possible strategies with both Lia and Zen mid-battle whenever I had one of them out, both to brainstorm and see what their opinions on the current situations were. It felt odd just vocally calling out commands and nothing else, and Zen had to feel the same. After taking a deep breath to avoid just yelling at the Psychic-type, I tried to reason with him. “Zen, if you're going to block me off I'm just going to send you back for now. You're already hurting due to it, so stop.”

The barricade stayed as closed as ever. Instead, Zen switched his gaze over to me and gave an accusing glare, as if blaming me for the reason he had been burned. The Gallade shook his head, clearly refusing both options.

Ignorant, stubborn, idiotic son of a...

It was probably a good thing that Zen had closed off the link after all, for it was extremely hard to not just smack him upside the head, Pokemon or not. The last thing I needed to do in the middle of a battle with an unfamiliar Pokemon was lose my temper, even though the Gallade was being extremely unruly. I just needed to calm down, think of a decent battle strategy and... wait, that was it!

Zen, just try to relax. Use Calm Mind to increase your defenses, then Psychic to shake your opponent up a bit.” If he refused to listen to this command as well, I would need to somehow learn Calm Mind to prevent throttling the Gallade.

Zen's face became unreadable, slipping into a neutral mast as he turned around to face the Trevenant once more. I attempted once more to see if he had opened his mind, yet it was still sealed. Whatever the Gallade did, I would only know by what happened in the next few moments.

"Well, it's a tree, so it can't have too many tricks--" Akinai started, stopping herself mid-sentence. The trainer had finished with another statement, correcting the fact that she was about to underestimate the Grass and Ghost type tree she and her Gallade were battling. "Granted, it did just conjure fire."

Underestimating this new Pokemon was probably a very bad idea, and Aleria was glad that Akinai had caught onto that quickly. Do not underestimate the ghosts. Aleria had heard that those Prankster Sableye could be hell to deal with. Glancing down at the guide book she still held in her hands, it didn't look like Prankster Trevenant would be a problem given that it couldn't have Prankster as an ability, but that didn't mean the tree couldn't pull tricks out of its sleeve. These new Kalos Pokemon probably had tricks up their sleeves that had yet to be seen.

And it looked like they were about to see one.

As Gallade closed his red eyes to focus and gather his thoughts, the Trevenant disappeared into thin air. Aleria's eyes widened, suddenly looking around. "Whoa!" the ranger exclaimed. "It's not running from us, is it? The Park Pokemon can't do that, can they? I mean, I know they can if they've been given a doll and all, but just running mid battle seems weird..." She scanned the area again. No sign of the Trevenant. No sign of a Substitute, so Aleria knew it couldn't be that. Her eyes went back to her guide book, scanning the moves that a Trevenant would be able to learn. Aside from a few moves, all of them sounded pretty familiar, and from there, it was easy to deduce which one the Trevenant had used, just as Gallade opened his eyes, wincing just slightly from the pain of the burns inflicted upon him by the violet flames.

"Oh." was all Aleria could say as the realization came to her. She continued, also realizing that Akinai may have been just as confused as she was. "That's Phantom Force, I think. I've heard about this. The Pokemon disappears for a bit, and then it comes back and smacks you when you least expect it." Part of her wanted to add that Akinai should tell her Gallade that he should keep his eyes and ears open for the Trevenant, but Aleria assumed her trainer knew that much already.

With the Trevenant gone, however, Gallade was smart enough to realize that unleashing a Psychic attack now would be pointless, so the purple glow that had formed in his eyes faded away once he too realized that the Trevenant had disappeared. It was a waiting game now.

As Zen closed his eyes, hopefully to begin his Calm Mind technique, Trevenant apparently decided to act once more. Without warning, the treelike Pokemon vanished into thin air. While this was a common technique used in Ghost Pokemon, most quickly reappeared to ambush their foe due to being unable to completely hide their form for long. After several seconds had passed with no sign of the wild Pokemon, it was clear that something was wrong.

Whoa! It's not running from us, is it?” Aleria blurted out, clearly surprised. The Ranger looked about, likely searching for some sign of the Trevenant. “The Park Pokemon can't do that, can they?”

Now, why are you asking me? I almost replied to Aleria, biting my tongue to avoid the retort. Even with entering the Park multiple times in the past, there was still quite a bit I had no clue on, along with areas I had never seen before. This area was one of them. “I know Ghosts can disappear for a short time, but it should have showed up by now,” I said instead, trying to choose my words carefully. “Maybe it's just hiding out of sight?”

Zen slowly shook his head, keeping his eyes closed. With his opponent nowhere to be found, the Gallade didn't launch into his second attack; considering Psychic consisted of attacking the target's mind directly instead of firing off a ranged object it would have been near impossible to use anyways. The Calm Mind had relaxed Zen's tense movements slightly, but a quick search revealed that he was still keeping the link closed on his end.

Before I could be tempted to physically shake the Gallade, Aleria spoke up once more. “That's Phantom Force, I think. I've heard about this. The Pokemon disappears for a bit, and then it comes back and smacks you when you least expect it.”

Out of sight... so it's almost like the move Fly?” I had a hunch that the move would be Ghost-imbued as well, due to its sinister-sounding name. Dark was a possibility as well, but considering Trevenant was a Ghost the chance it was the former was pretty high. Moves that took a while to use tended to deal an impressive amount of damage as well, which was another issue. Zen was still hurting from his burn, so a super-effective attack might push him to his limits.

As if to back up the point, Zen was now moving about in a circle for any sign of Trevenant. While he could sense that the wild Pokemon was nearby due to using his psychic powers, it looked as if the Gallade was unable to get an exact bead on its location. Though he was trying hard to hide it, there was a slight hint of fear in Zen's eyes.

That sealed it. With Zen in such a state, I couldn't count on his help in this battle. My next action would likely anger him as well, so he would be out of commission for the rest of the day and this Run. I wasn't about to see him faint himself (or worse) simply for being pigheaded though. Whatever the Gallade's problem was, I would deal with it once we were out of the Park.

Silently, I retrieved two of the four Pokeballs on my belt, pointing one of them at Zen. The Gallade's eyes widened in shock as he realized that he was being recalled, but was unable to do anything about it. Immediately after, I tossed the second Ball forward, towards where Zen had just been standing. “Tavi, you're up!”

The Pokeball opened in a flash of white light, revealing a bipedal white-furred Pokemon with sharp claws. There were red markings on his left ear and paws along with a zigzag pattern of the same hue on his belly. The creature looked about warily, sniffing the air in suspicion.

Your target is out there, trust me,” I said to the Zangoose. While I could have used Jade instead to take Zen's place and avoid reassuring my partner altogether, she would have been unable to defend herself once Trevenant showed itself once more. Tavi, on the other hand, was of a typing that had a strong resistance against Ghosts for some reason. Against such an unknown attack, it was best to play on the defensive. “Go with a Taunt once you see it show up! You're looking for a haunted tree, so it shouldn't be too hard to find”

Tavi gave a snort, likely thinking about how impossible it seemed for an entire tree to hide itself. Still, the Zangoose readied his attack by muttering under his breath, thinking of a perfect insult to use.

Aleria nodded at Akinai's response. "I know Ghosts can disappear for a short time, but it should have showed up by now,” she'd replied. "Maybe it's just hiding out of sight?" It made sense. Ghosts could disappear. In her surprise, she hadn't thought of that. Good thing she had Akinai here to keep her on her toes. Aleria nodded again when she'd asked if the move was like Fly in that the Pokemon went out of sight. The Ghost type version of Fly sounded good. That would be a useful description to use the next time she took someone through the park and this came up.

Akinai made a decision that shocked her Gallade, returning the blade armed Pokemon and replacing it with a white furred mongoose. She'd called it Tavi, and it stood where the Gallade stood seconds ago. "Your target is out there, trust me," she told her Pokemon. "Go with a Taunt once you see it show up! You're looking for a haunted tree, so it shouldn't be too hard to find." The Zangoose snorted at his trainer's remark. Clearly it wasn't very afraid of a haunted tree. That or he was underestimating his opponent. Either way, he had a good trainer behind him, so Aleria doubted anything too serious would happen.

That and Zangoose was a Normal type and Trevenant was a Ghost type. Zangoose stumbled back a little as the Ghost type flew through the mongoose, more surprised than anything, and Trevenant appeared before him. And then the Zangoose walked right up to the haunted tree and said "Zangoose" as if it were trying to be insulting. Aleria couldn't help but let out a little giggle. It was funny how Pokemon could be so insulting, yet so funny at the same time. As Zangoose walked away to go stand closer to his trainer, the Trevenant's single red eye looked as if it held all of the Pokemon's emotions. It was like flames had appeared in his eyes, and he stomped a root-like foot (if that's what you could even call it because Aleria wasn't quite sure herself) on the ground. It was taunted alright; Al could tell based on the fact that the Zangoose had snickered a little at his opponent's anger.

While waiting around for the Trevenant to show itself once more, I couldn't help but feel a little uneasy. The Ghost had been gone for some time now, far longer than a simple phase out trick like so many of the species could do. Aleria had mentioned that this was a new technique that had recently been discovered, but it seemed like forever since I had seen the tree-like spirit. Maybe it had left the field, and we were just wasting our time standing around.

I don't suppose you see any sign of Trevenant anywhere, Tavi? Or anything in particular,” I muttered to the Zangoose, knowing the question was foolish as soon as the words were uttered. Normal-types were near immune to spectral attacks, but it also made it near impossible for them to sense Ghost Pokemon in general. A Caterpie likely had more luck finding Trevenant than Tavi.

Thankfully, Tavi had either not heard my command or had decided that preparing his attack was far more important than answering. The Zangoose was still muttering under his breath, and had a look of intense concentration as he tried to find the perfect insult for whatever could anger a tree.

After what felt like an eternity, there was a blur of brown as the Trevenant popped back into view and lunged towards where Zen had been standing previously. A sinister aura surrounded the Ghost-type, confirming that its disappearing act had indeed been an attack of some sort. Instead of ramming into a near-helpless Psychic Pokemon like it had expected though, the wild Pokemon phased through a clueless Zangoose instead. Tavi hardly moved a muscle as Trevenant passed through him, looking more surprised than hurt. Trevenant, on the other hand, nearly stumbled as its attack failed to strike a target.

You would think it would have known better,” I remarked out loud, watching as the Trevenant regained its footing. The Ghost had shown some knowledge earlier by crippling Zen's attacks with a burn, yet had tried to use a weak attack against a Zangoose not long after. There was a chance it had not dealt with Normal-type Pokemon before, but it still struck me as strange.

Tavi shook off whatever effect Phantom Force did flawlessly, instead opting to place his full attention towards his opponent. The Zangoose slowly walked towards the wild Pokemon, a gleam of confidence in the Normal-type's eye. Once the two Pokemon were seeing each other eye-to-eye, Tavi opened his mouth to say a single word. The tone was flatter than a deflated balloon; apparently the Zangoose wasn't one for conversation.

Surprisingly, the remark worked like a charm. Trevenant's single eye blazed in anger, and the creature stomped the forest floor with a root-like foot as it tried to vent out its anger. It was clear that what it really wanted to pummel was Tavi- whatever the Zangoose had said, it had to be pretty impressive to get such a reaction.

Even though Tavi was starting off this battle on a fantastic note, I honestly had no idea where to go from here. Tavi was easily the least-used Pokemon on my team for this expedition, thanks to the fact that most of my battling in the past year had been inside the Gym. Since League rules now stated that Leaders could only use Pokemon of the same type as their Gym, the Normal-type had received next to no fighting experience since the day I had hatched him from an Egg. In fact, none of the non-Ghosts on my team had battled in quite some time...

Zen, looking as if he wished to lash out at any Pokemon that crossed his path.

Zen, normally fairly passive, growing angry when hearing a Ghost-type would be used to fight instead.

Zen, refusing to listen to any orders when being told to step down.

I resisted the urge to hit myself upside the head for not seeing the signs earlier. Gallade were competitive by nature, wishing to test out their skills often unlike the more calm-minded Gardevoir counterpart. Zen was likely feeling like his battle skills were stagnating due to lack of use, which would have explained his earlier happiness when I had announced that I was heading to the Park once more. Wishing to use Anima on the first battle was likely a slap in the face to the Gallade.

To further bring the point home, Tavi seemed just as much at a loss to do as well. The Zangoose shifted from one foot to the other uneasily, staring down the angered Trevenant. Judging from the way his claws twitched, he was eager to strike; the problem was with which move. Thanks to a recent shopping spree, I had been able to teach Tavi a decent assortment of moves. While there were a few viable ones to use, Normal attacks would be completely ineffective as well. That meant that the Zangoose would be relying solely on techniques that he was fairly unfamiliar with.

Right, then.” I took a deep breath to calm myself, trying to clear my mind of the likely discovery of Zen's disobedience. I could deal with the issue later- for now there was a battle to be fought. “Tavi, lets go with Hone Claws. Once you're ready, go in with a Fire Punch.” Using a Poison Jab instead was tempting, but Zen had also used the move earlier. If Trevenant had any sense, it would likely have noticed the similarity. I could only hope that the Zangoose had enough sense to strike the Ghost and not a nearby tree instead.

Tavi gave a curt nod, and began to rub his front claws together in an odd fashion. While this likely looked strange to anyone observing the technique, in truth the movement helped to sharpen the nails in order to deal more damage. With any luck, the Zangoose would ready his second attack as soon as the first one succeeded.

"You would think it would have known better," Akinai remarked out loud, watching as the Trevenant regained its footing. Aleria shrugged. The Pokemon in the park weren't completely stupid. They were still wild, yes, but they had their wits about them.

"Maybe it just wasn't expecting the change," Aleria said with another shrug. "Or maybe it's just never seen a Zangoose before. Who knows?" It was strange, yes, but Al blamed it on the fact that the Pokemon was new. Maybe it hadn't battled much before it came here, maybe it had never seen a Zangoose before like she'd said... the possibilities were probably endless, but they didn't matter now. There was still a tree here, and that tree had to have its health knocked down a few more pegs before the balls could be thrown at it.

There was silence as Akinai prepared her next plan of action, or whatever it was she was doing. Her Pokemon shifted about as he waited for a command to attack or just do something. Both of Akinai's Pokemon had acted strangely, or so Al thought. Her Gallade was stubborn, though that may have been his personality. (Stubborn Pokemon were the best. They were so great that Aleria just got along so well with them. Not.) This Zangoose looked rather uncomfortable. Maybe it was just the new Pokemon they had to face. Odds were they probably hadn't seen a Trevenant before they came into the Woods. The other two Pokemon Akinai had brought with her, a Flygon and a Chandelure if Aleria remembered correctly, probably hadn't seen one either. Still, Chandelure was a Ghost type, so it could probably relate to the tree ghost more than the other three Pokemon the trainer had brought along.

Oh well, it didn't matter. Akinai was pretty much free to battle however she wanted, so long as she didn't destroy the park. Or harm the ranger. Or herself. (Well, actually, she could probably do that. Aleria couldn't remember a rule that said otherwise. It still wouldn't be a good idea though, and Aleria would probably have to fill out an incident report or something, and that was just a process she didn't want to go through, let alone find out about.)

"Right, then," Akinai had said, taking a deep breath. "Tavi, let's go with Hone Claws. Once you're ready, go in with a Fire Punch." The Zangoose nodded and began to rub his claws together all while focusing on the Trevenant before him. It was odd, but it made sense: Hone Claws increased the strength and accuracy of moves used. Sharper nails meant more damage, and the more damage Akinai nad her Zangoose caused, the sooner they could catch Trevenant and move on with their run. Maybe there was another Pokemon here she'd want. You never knew.

Still, while the Zangoose sharpened his claws, Trevenant was preparing an attack of its own. It suddenly made an odd noise, a burp, maybe? Aleria wasn't sure. She didn't even know if Pokemon could burp. What she did know was that it was an odd noise and that purple bubbles blew out of the tree's mouth, popping once they floated up into the air a bit.

"Looks like it was trying to use something it couldn't and failed," Al commented, nodding at the frustration that lined the tree's face. The tree was slipping up. It had done so well earlier on, keeping its distance from Akinai's Pokemon, but now Akinai and her Pokemon, Gallade and Zangoose specifically, were closing the distance, and Trevenant was trying to figure out what to do. It was like the ghost tree was panicking, in a way, through all of its slip ups.

Trevenant, still bothered that its attack had failed, dug its roots into the ground, and they suddenly popped up when Zangoose tried to strike, tripping the mongoose. The heavier they are, the harder they fall, and that's what happened here with Zangoose. The roots tripped the mongoose up, and he fell over just as he was bringing his arm back to strike the ghost tree. Zangoose's attack didn't go completely unused though. He reached out to the tree as he fell, hoping to bring the Trevenant down with him. That tactic had failed too, but the last lick of flames on Zangoose's claws scratched the tree and left scorch marks on the tree's bark. It was nothing serious, but it had caused a bit of damage.

But there was more. There was always more.

As Zangoose was bringing himself back up to his feet, a sudden force struck Trevenant head on, and the tree toppled over. It made sound similar to groaning as it used its roots to help get back on its rooted feet. The tree looked dazed though, having been attacked so suddenly. Trevenant rustled a bit, some leaves falling from its branches. The ghost tree still had some fight left in it though, there was no doubt about that.

OOC: I really, REALLY have no excuse for this post taking forever. If this capture succeeds, would like to leave with Trevenant.

    @Felly;

Trevenant, unsurprisingly, was not about to let Tavi charge up without striking back with an attack of its own. The spectral tree seemed to suck in some air, which was odd enough considering that Ghosts did not need to breathe. Not long after, it gave a loud belch- yet nothing else seemed to happen.

All... right, then? I waited for some attack to form, or at least some sign that something had changed in the area. Aleria seemed just as confused, keeping an eye on the wild Pokemon. It wasn't until a few small violet bubbles popped out of Trevenant's mouth and the creature looked frustrated that I realized whatever it had been planning had failed.

A Poison attack?” I wondered aloud, shaking my head. Violet colors could indicate a Ghost technique as well, but none of them could exactly bubble like that. Habit made me mentally go through over all of the Poison moves I had seen used by Pokemon in the past, but then the sight of Tavi smirking knocked me out of that train of thought. Zangoose, due to their rivalry with Seviper, had a natural immunity to nearly all types of poison. Even if that attack had landed, the Normal-type probably would have shrugged off the effects easily... not that Trevenant had to find out, of course. If it decided to use the same attack again for some reason, it could be used to our advantage.

His claws now properly sharpened, Tavi began initiating his second attack. A wreath of flames began to swirl around the Zangoose's fist, threatening to scorch any creature that dared make contact with it. Trevenant's lone eye widened upon seeing the fire, and the wild Pokemon began to show signs of nervousness. Seeing his opponent's discomfort, Tavi seemed to brim with confidence. As his technique readied closer to completion, the Zangoose charged.

In a gesture of panic, Trevenant reacted. Seeing that the fire was growing closer, the Grass-type slammed his bark-like hands into the forest floor. A cluster of roots erupted from the ground, snaking their way towards Tavi. Having too much inertia to stop now, the Zangoose tried reaching the tree with an extra boost of speed.

Come on, you can do it,” I urged Tavi on. Zangoose were relatively quick on their feet as is, and Trevenant was a tree. Surely he could outrun it-

Either Trevenant was quicker than it looked, or desperation hastened its attacks. Before Tavi could strike, a particularly large root managed to tangle around his foot, tripping the Zangoose and slamming him to the ground. Growling in frustration, Tavi reached out his claw as far as he could towards Trevenant. Not expecting the Normal-type to counter, the wild Pokemon gained a few scorch marks on its hide.

Well it was better than nothing, or at least that's what I silently told myself to prevent getting annoyed. Thankfully, Tavi had not been chained to the ground by the roots; only a single one had managed to trip him up, so it would be relatively simple to get back into the fight. During one visit to the park, a particularly vengeful Pichu had managed to trap my Flygon, preventing her from moving. A quick Strength technique had freed Jade, but I had no desire to waste any more time here. It was going to be hell enough trying to apologize to Zen later.

A surprised cry and a loud thud caused me to look away from Tavi and towards the direction of the new sound. Trevenant, who had previously looked relieved that it had halted Tavi's attack, was now flat on the ground, groaning in pain. Tavi, who was still picking himself up from the ground, was gaping at his foe in obvious confusion. Whatever it had been, the Zangoose had not done the damage.

Wait... Zen's Future Sight? I had completely forgotten that the Gallade had used that attack before being recalled. Future Sight was an attack that I almost never used, due to the fact that it was a delayed move. Thankfully, it had ended up working to our advantage; Trevenant had to now right itself before it could attack properly again.

Tavi, go with Shadow Claw! Try to get in close,” I called out to the Zangoose. A Ghost technique would deal serious damage to a creature of the same element, but Trevenant looked healthy enough to weather the damage without being knocked out entirely... so long as Tavi didn't get too lucky. Either way, it was time to end this.

I slipped my pack down slightly, just enough for me to reach the pouch where I kept Balls used in this area for safekeeping. Once Tavi had landed his attack, I would retrieve a Hyperball and launch it towards the wild Pokemon.

Trevenant was back on its feet now, but so was the Zangoose, and that Zangoose was not going down without a fight. He had an advantage now. Neither of them would go down without a fight, but only one could be deemed the victor. Not that there was much victory in this, given that Akinai was trying to catch the ghost tree, but it worked for the situation. It would be a victory for Akinai at the very least.

Trevenant was still a bit dazed. It had toppled over, and it was back on its feet now, but the daze hadn't been fully shaken off yet.

Zangoose readied its attack, claws at the ready. A shadowy aura had shown up on the claws of the white furred Pokemon. Aleria glanced over at her trainer; Akinai was ready to go. She was already getting a ball ready to throw at the Grass and Ghost typed Pokemon.

"Treeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" the Pokemon cried when Zangoose's attack struck. Trevenant must have been too dazed by Gallade's last act to react. Maybe the Future Sight had channeled the fact that Gallade was upset and did enough to daze the tree Pokemon too. Whatever it was, it was enough to distract it long enough for Zangoose to get another attack in.

And then the ball soared and hit Trevenant, sucking it up in a red light. The ball landed on the ground and sat there for a moment. It didn't even bother to shake once before the Trevenant came back out of the ball. Said ball rolled away once the tree had materialized, only being stopped by a tree. The problem lied in that the tree the Hyper Ball was by was also by the Pokemon Akinai was trying to catch.

"Well, at least the ball didn't break, that's a start," Aleria commented. "Might be a bit difficult to get unless you can somehow get your Zangoose to grab it." It was unnecessary to say that the ball needed to be undamaged to be used; Akinai wasn't new to the park. Reminding her would've been pointless. "Of course, if you have another Hyper Ball, you could just use that too and get your ball back later. Whatever you want to do."

    @Felly;

As Trevenant managed to right itself, Tavi darted towards his target. A dark spectral energy coated his claws, the hue easily identifying it as a Ghost-affiliated move. With his opponent still attempting to stand, it was near child's play for the Zangoose to land his attack. The tree Pokemon shuddered from the strike, obviously hurt.

Got you. It was hard to not cheer as I saw the Trevenant slump over in pain; Zen's delayed attack must have done quite a number on it to make it appear this week. With the way clear, I had a clear shot at a capture. Taking aim, I tossed the Hyperball forward. The sphere tapped its target lightly, opening to suck in the wild Pokemon--

--only to be forced open once more immediately. As the Ball rolled off to the side, Trevenant looked to be in less of a daze than it had been before, its lone eye looking about warily. Tavi, seeing that his opponent was still on the field, raised his claws in a defensive gesture.

Aleria made a comment on the Hyperball still being in working condition. Since Pokemon in the Park were a great deal stronger than their cousins on the mainland, the capture devices here were stronger as well. “Might be a bit difficult to get unless you can somehow get your Zangoose to grab it,” the Ranger added helpfully.

I mulled over the idea for a moment. It would save some time if I could get Tavi to kick the ball towards the wild Pokemon and attempt another capture attempt. There was just one problem- that would involve the Zangoose to take his eyes off the Trevenant in that short time frame. If this one acted like most Ghost Pokemon, all they needed was a few moments to work out a counterattack or even escape entirely.

Trevenant was strong enough to fight for the moment, that was clear enough. I needed to somehow weaken it down more, without knocking it out entirely. Problem was, most of Tavi's learned moves were strong enough to take it out. That meant... “Tavi, we just need one more to finish this. Go with X-Scissor.”

That earned a bewildered look from the Normal-type. A Bug-type move must seem like a terrible idea when trying to capture a Grass Pokemon. With a Ghost's innate resistance though, the two would likely counter each other out. Seeing that I wasn't going to change moves anytime soon, Tavi began to charge up her technique.

With that out of the way, I fished out my remaining Hyperball. I would retrieve the first one later, once this was all over. For now, the only thing to do was to try for another capture once Tavi's attack landed.

The capture had failed, and as a result, Trevenant was angry. The tree was walking towards the ball that it was trapped in for mere seconds. Was it going to break the ball? Destroy it so that it could no longer be used? Aleria couldn't place her fingers on the Trevenant's plans, but whatever it was couldn't be good. Just because she was a ranger didn't mean she understood Pokemon.

"Tavi, we just need one more to finish this. Go with X-Scissor." Zangoose was surprised by his trainer's command, but Aleria wasn't. Another Shadow Claw would probably be enough to knock the tree out, and then Akinai wouldn't be able to capture it at all. Trevenant was weak, that much was obvious. It was moving towards the Hyperball, but it was tired, injured; Tavi the Zangoose could get to the Trevenant before anything happened to that ball.

Zangoose crossed his arms and moved towards the tree again, this time a pale green energy developing around the white furred Pokemon's claws. Upon seeing the advancing Zangoose, Trevenant brought his attention to his opponent and shielded himself with his brown, leafy arms. Zangoose attacked still, despite the attempt at defense Trevenant had up. The tree winced at the pain brought on by X-Scissor; it wasn't as effective as it would've been if the ghost tree was a pure Grass type, but it was enough to weaken it further and possibly to the point of capture.

But Trevenant retaliated. The pain wasn't enough to stop that, and he was angry anyways. He needed to take his anger out on something, or someone, and what better target than the one that had just attacked it? Trevenant retaliated with a wooden fist to Zangoose's furry stomach. It was enough to knock Zangoose back a bit, but it wasn't enough to knock him out completely. He just doubled over and stumbled back a bit from the unexpected blow. Trevenant's strength went up, as evidenced by the blue aura that suddenly, yet briefly surrounded its tree like body.

Not much would happen with that newfound strength though. Akinai threw another Hyperball as soon as Trevenant's attack struck Zangoose, and just like the first time, the tree was sucked up into the ball. Aleria held her breath this time. Two failed captures would result in one very ticked off Trevenant, and that would be no fun to deal with. Angry trees were scary, Aleria noted.

The ball shook once, twice, and a third time before it clicked shut. Aleria smiled and let out the breath she'd been holding in. A successful capture for Akinai, and another happy trainer. The ranger stepped forward and picked up the ball with Trevenant in it, depositing it into her bag. "Welp, that's that," Aleria said. "You've got your Trevenant. Did you want to rest up a bit before you went on? Your Zangoose and Gallade took a bit of a beating there."
