The towering, icy mountain faced before us. It's fiery twin was out of sight, behind it. Our field of view was entirely blocked by the sheer expanse of Mount Okotori.

I turned to the Trainer I was with. She and her Infernape looked ready, ready to race into this mountain for the contest.

"You lead the way," I said, gesturing in front of me. "I'll be behind you, in case of dire emergency."

She shrugged, and we began the long hike on the switchbacks, farther and farther up the mountain. Eventually, we came to a small flat portion, a kind of rest stop.

Of course, it wasn't exactly the safest place to rest. The ground was somewhat slippery because of ice, and there was a sheer cliff face on one side. It was big enough, however, to move around on.

We weren't alone, either. A Makuhita stood there, training itself by hefting and throwing around rocks larger than itself. At the sound of our approach, it turned to face the Trainer and her Pokemon.

Admittedly, Brooklyn knew what she was getting into when she signed up for Mt. Okotori. She hated the cold. With the cold came dry skin, dried out lips, and the feeling of Jack Frost nipping at her nose. That was possibly one of the many things that irked the blonde hair girl the most when it came to winter-like weather. Nothing could beat the feel of the cold's pressure against her nose. Obviously, Brooklyn knew that her body would have to adjust to the weather before she could seek or feel any comfort.

In the back of her mind, she could envision the many people in her life who would question her choices. She honestly didn't blame them. For her to act completely out of character and to travel through Mt. Okotori would sound all the alarms. There were a variety of Pokémon that she could use on her team. Since she has so many Pokémon in her team who were weak to fighting types then she had to do just that - try to capture a fighting type. She did keep in mind to look for possible ice Pokémon.

Before she embarked on this run, Brooklyn had pondered deeply what Pokémon to aim for. Sometimes she didn't have a say and she accepted if she didn't get to run into the Pokémon she preferred to run into. That was just life. However, it was better to go through Mt. Okotori with an idea of what to look for and an idea of what she may battle in the long run.

Brooklyn called this list an egg list. The egg list consisted of five Pokémon from common to borderline. If any of these Pokémon were to appear in her run, then she knew she would battle them and try to catch them. The first Pokémon she had added onto her list was a Swinub. This was one of the two only ice-types on her list as well one of the only ground types too. It was another Pokémon to essentially add to her list. Also, Mamoswine would help her team in some ways more than others that her other ground types could not assist her. Of course, there was that small detail with wanting to ride tall Pokémon through the park.

Brooklyn then added a Scraggy into the second slot of her egg list. There were so many reasons to back up why she should capture a Scraggy. Aside from the fact that Scraggy is unbelievably cute, he would join Brooklyn's team as a great fighting type. What Brooklyn enjoyed most about fighting types was their fighting spirit. For some reason or another, the fighting types had a real spirit in them when it came to battling Pokémon with their fighting attacks.

She wanted that eagerness to exist in her team. All of her Pokémon in one way or another had come together through their fighting spirit. Even if they weren't entirely the same and had their faults, they each wanted to fight together - for her. Brooklyn also could not lie about how she would want to carry scraggy everywhere she went. Of course, this was nothing compared to a Larvitar she had always dreamed of having, the baby Kangaskhan she could just coo over, or the Axew she just wants to treat like a baby. Scraggy was in that list of Pokémon she would treat so motherly and yet, maintain being a trainer who trains them while they grow to protect her as well fight equally strong Pokémon.

Third on the egg list was a Cubchoo. Brooklyn couldn't get over the idea of a raging bear in her team. He was so scary, yet so fluffy, and warm. One plus to any Pokémon like Cubchoo is that their evolution line was so fuzzy and warm. Cubchoo was the other ice type on her egg list. Unlike Swinub however, Cubchoo was primarily an ice type Pokémon. At some point, she recalled someone advising her to look at capturing some ice types. There were Pokémon that were weak against ice types. Also, since dragon types were a pain in the ass and tended to be so for her, a Beartic would send any dragon type to the grave. Well, not completely all the dragon types, but enough that not all her Pokémon would have to suffer those nasty dragons and their overpowering attacks.

After Cubchoo, Brooklyn had decided that she could compromise for a stronger Pokémon. By stronger, she didn't want to just aim for uncommon Pokémon and whatever went below that line. She needed to have that just-in-case slot. So, her fourth slot was dedicated to none other than Mienfoo. As well, this was another fighting Pokémon that can prove to be a neat addition to her Pokémon group. Unlike a lot of her other Pokémon, this wasn't any Pokémon she could really see herself hugging.

What brought her to choose Mienfoo though? When she though back to it, Mienshao was a fighting Pokémon that could break into the must-haves. Mienshao has many different abilities that can come in handy. There was inner focus that prevented the fighting type from flinching. Then there was regenerator, which allowed Mienshao to regain a little health point when withdrawn. Lastly, Mienshao's Dream World Ability was reckless. Brooklyn knew she was a daring person, so she knew she was going to one day capture a Pokémon like Mienfoo, and then use the dream world ability reckless.

It's just as they say, no pain, no game.

The last Pokémon on Brooklyn's list was sort of that Pokémon she didn't care for look-wise and was just another Pokémon to add to her list of toughness. Even if she were to capture a Timburr, his toughness is nothing compared to her Sudowoodo. That much she has come to accept. Timburr was a fierce competitor in battle. Brooklyn was looking for that too. Sometimes though, her desire for tough Pokémon fought with her wants for adorable Pokémon. She could see that as a problem building up gradually as she continue her life as a trainer.

When the morning came, Brooklyn could only sit in front of the mirror. Why were her nerves trembling? It wasn't like she hadn't gone through the park before. There was the time with the Great Lakes and that Tentacruel. Then there was the time with the other capture contest and a Polliwhirl. So honestly, she didn't see anything that could go wrong. Brooklyn knew she had the experience. That didn't change the fact she was going through an area of the park she never thought she would access once in her life.

Guess no one can just go through life without having to acquire ice-type and fighting-type Pokémon. Just as long as she didn't run into any Froslass that could mess up her hair or make-up then everything will turn out OK in the end. Brooke had focused her stare into the mirror as she kept her eyes open. She spent the morning before her run getting ready like any average young woman would - putting on makeup, doing hair, picking out an outfit, and all that fun stuff - Except she didn't have much of a say in the outfit this time.

Brooklyn added the usual touch ups to her make-up: mascara, eyeliner, eye-shadow, lip gloss, and lip liner. Today, she decided that her hair could help her. She wasn't traveling through the forest or anything like that. So, she was safe to have her hair in a half-up, half-down. Her blonde hair had sort of a bump at the top of her head then ran down with a snowflake hair piece that kept the front of her hair together at the back of her head. The ends of the tail of the hair were left in curls and she had too slightly curled the ends of the rest of her hair that hung down.

Outfit-wise, Brooklyn had stuck with a one-piece outfit under her clothes. Something that would help to keep her warm and if she were to get wet, then she would have something dry to strip down to. Brooke then slid on a silver and pink top. The top had a semi-high collar that zipped from the top to half-way down. There were pockets that zipped up and would prove useful on the journey. She then decided to wear a long jacket with long sleeves that were a little longer than her torso. The jacket was velvet red with dark brown buttons and the jacket ended outward around her knees.

Choosing something to wear bottom-wise was tricky. Brooklyn would sometimes prefer leggings with a short or skirt, sometimes mostly preferring a dress with leggings if she could get away with it. This wasn't the case this time though. Her jeans wouldn't help to compliment her leg figurine, so she had to stick to something a little baggier, but wouldn't get in the way of her walking or traveling. A pair of furry sweatpants helped with that. The fur had a silky, light to dark brown texture. Lastly, she decided to stick to a winter-appropriate, platform boots with pumps. The boots were a dark chocolate brown that had a couple inches of height added at the bottom of the shoe.

Same as last time, Brooklyn decided to bring her Infernape. Then again, last time, she got to bring her Gyarados, Butterfree, and Infernape. This time, she was limited to one Pokémon, unfortunately. She didn't know who created such a rule. If a trainer wants to bring as many Pokémon as possible, then they should be able to, no? She made her way out of the hotel room and to the counter to check out. She had a car sent that would bring her to the park.

Once she arrived at the ranger post, she was mostly glad that there were signs. When she entered the building to get an idea of where to start walking, she came to meet the eyes of the secretary. They weren't on the best terms. Brooke had to hold back a laugh that was mostly mockery. From the looks of things, the secretary was really busy with work today. With the cap contests and all the other trainers who signed up, the puffy eyelids gave away how much sleep that woman needed. How very ironic! The secretary didn't even try to bother with Brooklyn and just gestured to one of the arrows next to Mt. Okotori.

Brooke turned her head then rolled her eyes. Why didn't she see that earlier? Oh that's right, what did it matter? Already the morning is starting off great. Brooke walked out of the building and made her way to the post. When she spotted her ranger, she actually felt a little pleased. Last time when she had a run, or at least for one of her runs, the ranger was absolutely late. Who cares what the excuses were - she just wanted to get this over with. Brooke walked over to a man who resembled a respectable man in the Hoenn region.

"You lead the way," Ranger Dominic said. And not to forget that he was a gentleman! For once, this was a guy who wasn't someone who would talk down to her. He was one of those rare guys who let her do the walking without questioning it. She gave a slight shrug to what he said. Then, Brooklyn started to walk in front of Dominic. The feeling of walking with no one in front was an empowering feeling. No one was in her way. The only thing in front of her vision was her goal that lied at the wintery mountains that lied in the field of her vision. With the feeling that rushed through her, anything felt possible.

When they reached the entrance to the mountain, Brooklyn decided that was the best time to call out her Infernape. She slid off her bag then grabbed the fire-type's PokéBall. In one motion, she directed the PokéBall, and the device separated as white chrome began to escape the black abyss. Gradually, the white chrome grew and grew to meet the height of her fire/fighting-type Pokémon. Infernape stared at the mountain and then turned to let out a cry. Apparently, he could too sense that they already were facing an opponent. Guess that couldn't be a surprise. At least, since they arrived, and Pokémon were territorial. Except what they came to face after a little more walking was a Pokémon consumed with training.

Brooklyn's brown hues moved as she examined the Makuhita. His enormous, yellow body stood out entirely due to the whiteness of the snow and the transparent, light blue ice. When he would hit, his fists were covered with black-looking fighting gloves. He had a black ring around his neck, then he had red circles on his cheek that were not filled in and had bolded lines. Brooke then examined the top of the fighting-types head.

"It's ugly," Brooklyn commented and then gave a nod, "but I'll fight it." Maybe she can knock it out completely or break it down with enough points to win her this capture contest. Her head turned and she glanced to Infernape. "Well, are you in?" Infernape gave a nod and a monkey cry. "Whatever happens is fate at this point, if we're meant to catch it we'll catch it, but if you end up knocking it out then so be it too."

This too was potentially a tricky battle. Makuhita can have thick-fat, so it ups resistance to fire and ice-types. Then there's guts that means that Makuhita will boost attack if hit with a status problem. They could face percentage-wise trouble if this sucker has sheer force. Brooklyn crossed her arms and used a finger to twirl one of the curled strands of her blonde hair. With a sigh, she said, "I don't care if it notices us or not, but go in with an acrobatics Infernape."

A simple nod came from the flaming head. His big feet took a stance that created a position, in which the monkey would perform his attack. One could tell that the Flame Pokémon was focused and preparing an attack with the swift movement of the Pokémon’s tail. The ape-like Pokémon relaxed his golden-blade shoulders then started to swipe his feet across the ground in a graceful manner with ease. Brooke nodded with an approval at how Infernape began his attack. "See, now that, that's not ugly." A smile grew on Infernape's face due to his trainer's approval.

Infernape's body moved with a higher speed compared to the heavy, slow Pokémon. Apparently, Makuhita's speed was lower than even Brooklyn's Sudowoodo's speed. She hoped the defense that Makuhita had lived up to its title. So, Infernape, with the upper-hand, curled his fingers into a fist. As he got closer to the Pokémon, he continued to keep a consistent movement that would not disturb the graceful ease of his movement. Then, as the brave type he is, he was taking a chance to try and deliver a strike at the Makuhita.

Almost as soon as the Infernape left the ground, Makuhita was up in the air with it. The Makuhita lunged outwards with its arms repeatedly, smacking the Infernape. However, Infernape managed to dodge the rest of the attacks, landing on the ground using the Makuhita as a springboard, like a Judo throw.

I nodded, this was already looking like a good battle. The wild Pokemon, even outmatched, was putting up a valiant fight.

Eventually, a smirk appeared on the young girl’s face. She would lie if she were to reveal that she wasn’t liking where this was going. Or that she thought the Makuhita was entirely pathetic. Unfortunately, she had to put up with the effortless fighting-type. Everything would turn out for the better if Makuhita would give up and just go home. Brooke decided to see if she could curl some nerves in Makuhita’s stomach. Her glossy, tinted pink lips pressed together to reveal she had something suspicious on her mind.

Infernape bent forth then in one stride of a movement, he flipped his flame-bursting hair back. His browner, red eyes met his trainer’s lighter brown hues. In the Pokémon’s past experience with battling beside Brooklyn, he has learned to pick up some cues. He knew that Brooklyn was planning something exciting for him. Heck, the psychological effect of this routine already made is blood feel like it was running endlessly throughout his body. The ape-like Pokémon gave a cry to his trainer. Doing so had broken Brooklyn out of her train of thought and he prepared to hear what she had to command.

“You want to make this exciting, don’t you?” Brooklyn asked, though this was more of a rhetoric question. She uncrossed her arms and pointed directly to the Makuhita, then she began her instructions, “I want you to begin with using leer and intimidating this bud-less sprout of a Pokémon.”

Infernape gradually moved his gaze to the not-so prettier sight of a heavy, yellow set. No one had to give a time or count down. Infernape gritted his teeth a little bit to reveal one of his sharp fangs. He sharpened his stare on the Makuhita and narrowed his eyes. His eyes widen a bit and he relentlessly hit his chest with his fists as he let out a fierce cry any Infernape would make. Brooklyn felt a slight smile form out of her smirk when she heard the ape’s cry echo throughout the mountain. This wasn’t anything heavy, just a general echo.

“Infernape, you’re going to have to handle this well, or you can say goodbye if you make a wrong move,” Brooklyn said. She knew that Infernape could recover pretty easily. This was brave type after all. However, she had to play with his emotions a little bit. She had to get his thought process going and making him rally rely on the nature of his bravery. Anything to enhance his personality is guaranteed normally to help out in a given battle. Hey, if people can give minutes of long speeches on friendship, she can waste a few seconds rustling up her Infernape’s personality.

Infernape’s stare had darkened at that point. Brooklyn then continued to speak, “I want you to use a fire spin, but not against the opponent, but on you.” She turned her head and said, “Put a minimal amount, but try to linger in it for a while…make sure this Makuhita knows what it’s dealing with.”

Battles were dirty – sometimes. Brooke had to admit she could sometimes fall into a dirty battle. A dirty battle is using not-so great tools to aid in battle. Such as emotions – if a Pokémon is easily hurt by words, then that would become an advantage for the opponent’s trainer. A Pokémon that was too shy or easily scared could really help to bring the fun out of these types of battles. At least, that’s the way Brooklyn saw it. Her eyes ran over the fighting spirit’s body shape and format again. She was eager to see how everything turned out in the end of this one battle.

Infernape flexed his fingers a few times. Obviously, the words have gotten into Infernape’s head. All of what Brooklyn said sunk into him and it was the thrill of showing his trainer how wrong she was that brought out the bitter, yet sweet grin on Infernape’s face. He felt his breath gather into his diaphragm. What he tried to do was get a not-so deep breath together and concentrated on the combination of this breath with his energy. Just as before when Infernape demonstrated his hair-flip, he formed a more circular path around himself, and released a spin of fire to embrace his body.

They would have to see how well the fire remains in this type of climate. So far, Infernape was trying to keep his stare on Makuhita. There was no clue if the leer had worked yet. Brooklyn wasn’t really looking for clues or hints. What she wanted to do was entirely different. His intimidate was to mess with Makuhita’s mind more or less. Maybe the Pokémon would turn out to have a bit of a fight in it. Perhaps the heavier Pokémon would resort to attacking on emotions while ditching anything to deal with reasoning. Sure, there were a ton of possibilities she didn’t cover, but she’ll tackle them as they come at her. Now, she was prepared to finish the attack she had in mind.

“Infernape, run at the fatty and use fury cutter through the flames,” Brooklyn explained to the Flamer Pokémon.

An Infernape that stood at barely four feet and had a fire spun around him, stared across the mountain terrain to the Makuhita. His milk chocolate tail danced behind him in a slow, rhythm. His dark blue digits at the end of his feet flexed a couple times. Infernape arched his elbows and pushed them back with his golden, flame-shaped wrists ready to take action. Both of his fingers were curled up into a fist too. In a couple seconds, Infernape began to run to the Makuhita.

He leaned forth and pressed his hands on the ground to push up higher into the air. This was done so that Infernape could try to get a better chance at striking the fire spin with as many fury cutters as possible. More so that he is able to hit the fire spin, and then do so in the direction at Makuhita. His fist flexed back and then he would attempt to use the end of the flame-like, golden covers on his wrist to cut the fire in a fury-like manner. Infernape’s arms had crossed this time, and then swept his arms forth at the same time, to continue the attempted attack.

“Imagine if I had done something else…like shove Makuhita over the edge,” Brooklyn said. She brought her curled up hand to the bottom lining of her lips as she let out a laugh. “Isn’t that such a stupid idea?” Brooke stated, giving her opinion in the matter of her other options. “Ah, but of course, that fatty could push my Infernape off the cliff,” she said, to acknowledge the scenery’s possibilities. “We’ll see how hands-on this fighter really is,” Brooklyn said and stared deeper at her Infernape. “Nothing like Infernape though, definitely nothing compared to this fighting type.”

    ((Unlucky roll, no run...))

The Infernape gave the Makuhita an intimidating glare, then cloaked itself in flames. It charged the Makuhita, damaging it quite a bit. The Makuhita was barely able to respond, and only manage to connect a glancing blow against the flaming attacker.

Brooke had made her next call. She did not hesitate on this attack. Was this going to be over soon? Those were no longer the consistent thoughts that circled Brooklyn's head. Actually, she had another plan. Whether or not this ended the Makuhita for good, she was going to get amusement out of her next plan. A small part of her understood she had to watch Infernape closely throughout the park run.

If Infernape gets to 1/3rd of health left, generally the fire Pokemon would activate his ability: blaze. She had seldom few encounters with Infernape when he had accomplished that mode. What she understood was that Infernape can become tricky to handle at times when he is under blaze. She wasn't certain if Infernape could control himself overall or would turn into utter chaos.

Brooklyn glanced to her Infernape and watched as he maintained his distance on the ground. "Infernape, I want you to use ember on Makuhita's feet. Do this so that Makuhita will fall, then jump on him with bulk-up." There's no lie that fire hurts immensely. So, for Makuhita to get his feet on fire, Brooke imagined that the Pokemon would have to fall back. "If perhaps he doesn't fall down the way we hope, then more than likely he'll feel the impact of a fierce ape."

Infernape turned his head to face Brooklyn over his shoulder. During his sharp movement, the streams of his flaming hair swished around. One could compare this moment to any buffed up male models with long hair. His lips remained the same as they were at the beginning of the battle. Brooke gave a nod to Infernape and could see her reflection in the lens of his dark brown hues.

Infernape had then conveyed his opponent. He stepped back a couple times. His foot work was steady and he was cautious as he occasionally snapped back his stare tot he Makuhita. Infernape pressed his hands to the ground and locked his stare onto his target. He extended back his head a bit, and he had inahled a deep breath too. In one fluid motion he pushed his head forth and separated his mouth. A couple small flame balls escaped his mouth and he tried his best to aim them in the area around Makuhita's feet.

That wasn't it, however. They had one more attack left to follow through with Brooklyn's plan. She gave a nod to her Pokemon to acknowledge a job well done. The flaming Pokemon type had continued to arch his body a bit. One trick to a bulk-up is to make sure to come into contact with every muscle in the body possible. Sometimes the muscles a Pokemon or human (in general) doesn't use, but does use, can prove exceptional in any battle.

A couple of the muscles in Infernape's arms, such as the biceps, began to show really well. A couple muscles revealed themselves on Infernape's shoulders and against the neck area. Brooklyn had to resist the urge to try and peek at her Pokemon's stomach as she watched Infernape build a bulk-up. The muscle linings then started to show along the legs, and definitely the calf area. Pokemon were quite astounding sometimes in these type of moments.

Infernape then engaged his tensed muscles and pushed off the ground. It's as if someone set off a gun-shot inside his head. He didn't focus on anything esle except for the Makuhita he intended to try to hit. Brooklyn knew bulk-up wasn't necessarily a hit. However, with all the muscles combined together, and to have Infernape deliver a body-hitting attack - that had to help in some way or another. Makuhita had to realize that there was more than one fighter in their arena.

Before Infernape had even begun to attack, the Makuhita had already turned tail and fled into the caverns.

I shrugged, then motioned for Emmy to lead the way up the switchback paths to the summit of the icy mountain.

Eventually, the way became icy. With a roar, one of the large boulders suddenly revealed itself to be an attacking, hulking mammoth of a beast.

"That's a Mamoswine!" I called out from behind Brooklyn. "Be careful!"
