The trainer climbs up a valley flank. He is soon destracted by a angry growl as a Mightyena jumps from a ledge, baring its fangs.

OOC: @AmericanTreeFrog I assume you want me to mention you in each post?

I was looking forward to participating in this Event. The National Park needed more press, more buzz, and the higher-ups (myself included) had decided to try and initiate a semi-annual Catching Contest, with strict rules intended to try and attract the best of the best. Only one Pokemon was allowed in with the Trainer, and the only items they could use were given to them in a small basket at the beginning of the run. The runs were being monitored by all the Rangers at Headquarters and in the Archives. Some of the Elites should probably be monitoring as well, but in an effort to boost publicity all three of us were participating in the event. I hadn't seen Leo and Ivy since this morning, but hopefully they were as excited about this Event as I was.

<They just notified me that the last Trainer in this area has finished their run,> Dual said to me. <It's our turn to move out.> His body was tense and his arm-blades were fully extended, signifying that he too was excited and ready for a good time.

I nodded and waved to the official referee, who noted down my start time and waved back at me, telling me I was good to go. A grin split my lips and I ran out into Meteor Valley. I wasn't sure entirely where I was, but judging by the height of the canyon walls around me I was about half-way down. I couldn't decide whether to go up or down, so in the end I decided on neither. I scrambled up a small rock wall, pressing down hard on each foothold twice before using it to make sure that it could hold my weight. When I had finally clambered up onto the flat on top of the wall, I found Dual waiting for me with his arms crossed.

<What took you so long?> he asked, mirth in his eyes.

"Shut up, I can't teleport like you," I replied.

<You know, you probably could if only you could relax your mind and call on the power like I showed you,> the Pokemon admonished me. I grunted and waved him off, taking a couple of seconds to catch my breath.

I was interrupted by an angry growl. My head whipped up quickly and I saw a black blur fly through the air before landing on the ground opposite Dual and myself. The Pokemon growled again and bared its teeth. I could see lines of saliva drip down from those white fangs, heading towards the ground. Its red eyes burned at me, daring me to make a move on its turf.

"Wow, that's one pissed off Mightyena," I muttered. It looked like the Fates had decided that this Pokemon would be the first one of my allotted five Encounters. That was a bit unfortunate for me - the rules clearly stated that the rarer and stronger a Pokemon was, the more points it would be worth. While Mightyena weren't weak by any stretch of the imagination, they were very common in these parts and so wouldn't net me much of a high score.

So that only left the choice of how to get away from it. I could try to run, but that Mightyena looked mighty angry and I doubted it would just let me escape. I had a PokeDoll in my backpack, the only one given to each Trainer today, but I was saving that in case I came across a Reuniclus or a Gardevoir or something. I certainly didn't want to waste it on a Mightyena. So, that only left fighting it off.

How are you feeling, buddy? I asked Dual through our telepathic link. I know that those Mightyena can be pretty Intimidating sometimes.

    <I'm fine,>he replied, and I knew he wasn't lying. <This Dark-type is nothing but an overgrown puppy.>

Sometimes Mightyena could weaken a Pokemon through fear alone, but while this one appeared angry, it hadn't managed to frighten Dual, which did happen sometimes even though he wouldn't admit it. That meant it probably had some other Ability, one I'd have to watch out for. Still, seeing as Dual had the advantage here over the Mightyena, I couldn't see a reason not to fight it off.

"Alright Dual, this is a Dark-type, so your Fighting moves will be enough. Hit the Mightyena with a Close Combat, and don't hold anything back!" I ordered.

Dual nodded, and began running towards the Mightyena. I could see the muscles in his arms and legs begin to bunch, and when he got within range a flurry of punches, kicks and slashes would pummel the Mightyena from all directions. I was pretty sure that Dual was faster than the Mightyena, so if all went well we'd be able to move on quickly without even being scratched. If I was lucky, Dual would even be able to recover from the negative effects of Close Combat before our second Encounter.

Mightyena realizes it is outmatched and slower, but it reacts with a Sucker Punch attack to at least get a hit off. Chainy immediately sets off again, but is quickly harrassed by a small Wynaut.

Just before Dual was able to begin his assault, the Mightyena kicked forwards unexpectedly. It bit Dual on his shoulder, digging its teeth in and startling a cry out of the warrior. Still, this unexpected attack didn't stop Dual for long - he started kicking the Mightyena's underside repeatedly and mercilessly until the Dark-type let go. Dual then nailed the Mightyena in the face with a solid right jab with enough force to actually spin the wolf around, and then kicked it in its rump. The Wild Pokemon sailed through the air before landing in a heap, causing some dust to spiral up into the air. It looked at us and whined a little bit before skulking off.

"Good job, I'm just sorry I forgot about Sucker Punch," I apologised to my Pokemon. I was actually quite worried about Dual - despite being a close-range fighter, his physical defenses weren't great. He relied on his special defenses to sponge incoming attacks, and then he usually finished targets off point-blank before they could respond. Now he'd been hurt - a lot. I fumbled for the basket but Dual pushed at my arm with one of his.

<Don't be stupid,> he said reproachfully. <You made the right choice. Besides, it doesn't hurt that much, and I'm pretty sure that we'll need those healing items later on. I'm fine for now.>

"Alright, if you're sure," I said slowly. The Gallade nodded and we both set off along the path. I certainly didn't feel like climbing any more rocks right now.

A minute or so later I heard some squeaking down by my feet. A little Wynaut scampered out from some rocks and started running around my legs. I sighed; my second Encounter wasn't any better than my first. This Wynaut wouldn't earn very many points, and besides, I had no wish to own one anyway. At least this Pokemon was a defensive one - Dual and I should be able to escape it without any risk of something bad happening should the Pokemon decide to follow us.

"Sorry, but we can't play with you today," I said to the Wynaut. "Run along and play with your friends."

Just ignore it unless it starts getting belligerent, I sent to Dual, and we both walked on, hoping that the Wynaut would leave us alone.

Chainy proceeded past the Wynaut easily as the Pokemon didn’t want to engage the trainer knowing it couldn’t surive an attack. The trainer enters a cave and finds a Mime Jr. watching him.

Fortunately, the Wynaut didn't seem to have any issues with us leaving. It simply moved onto a warm rock and watched Dual and myself leave. That worked out quite well for me - Wynaut and Wobbuffet were famous for having access to a nasty array of moves like Encore, Destiny Bond and Counter. That could have been hell for Dual to fight.

The path led to a cave, or a tunnel. I exchanged a long look with Dual. Eventually I shrugged and we proceeded in. The cave was very dark and the temperature quickly became cool, which I welcomed after being in the hot Valley sun.

Dual started emitting a light from his two blades. The purple light painted the walls and caused everything to appear larger than it actually was. I was starting to feel a little claustrophobic when I heard a yap. I looked around only to find a Mime Jr watching us carefully. A sigh escaped from my lips - still nothing worth catching.

After wrestling with momentary indecision, I decided to hold onto my PokeDoll and continue onwards. I didn't really want Dual to smack around a Baby Pokemon, unless it couldn't be helped. Besides, seeing as the Psychic-type wasn't evolved, it probably couldn't do much damage to Dual on the off-chance it initiated a battle and got off an early hit.

"We're not here to harm you," I said to the Wild Pokemon, holding my hands up in the universal sign of peace. "My friend and I are just passing through, if you'd let us."

I slowly started inching to my left, away from the Pokemon, but never looking away from it. I just hoped it didn't decide to initiate battle - Psychic-types were some of the trickiest Pokemon to battle.

Dual and I tried to slide past the Mime Jr. but it got angry as we did so. We tried moving slower, but that just continued to irritate it. Finally I motioned to my partner with my hand and we tried to run, but the Mime Jr. showed a surprising burst of speed and jumped in front of us, preventing us from passing.

I sighed and pressed my palm against my forehead as I did when I was irritated. The little clown Pokemon was being a huge pain, and it looked like I was going to have to battle it off. Thankfully the Mime Pokemon shouldn't be as dangerous to battle as the Wynaut would have been, although this Pokemon could be infinitely more tricky. The best thing for Dual to do was to smack it down hard and fast before it could pull out any of its tricks.

"Dual I know you hate fighting Pokemon weaker than you, but you're going to have to this time," I said to him. "Hit that Mime Jr. with a long-range Night Slash and then finish it off with a Shadow Sneak."

I was pretty sure that the Baby Pokemon wouldn't be able to take two super-effective attacks. My worry was that it would try something that Dual wouldn't be able to respond to in time, something status-ey or typically Psychic-tricky.

Dual's right arm-blade lost the purple glow and instead became black. However, this black somehow seemed even darker than the natural black of the cave - it looked like the purple light from Dual's left arm was being sucked into the blackness on his right. The Night Slash grew in size until it was almost two metres in length and then Dual brought his arm forwards in a hooking motion. The black energy detached from his blade and deformed slightly into a crescent. The only reason I could see it was there was a slight tinge of purple around the edges of the attack, probably from the light it had absorbed.

Without waiting for his Night Slash to hit, Dual began sinking into the ground. He was becoming one with his shadow, and seeing we were in a cave, shadows were everywhere. After the Night Slash (hopefully) made contact, he'd pop out of the ground and jab at the Mime Jr. with his rock-hard fists. The problem was that the Wild Pokemon would probably get a shot off while Dual was emerging from the ground - I just hoped it wouldn't hurt my Gallade too much.

The spinning crescent slammed into the Mime Jr, knocking it over. Then, Dual emerged from the ground below the clown Pokemon and punched it into the air. I grinned, expecting the Psychic-type to fall to the ground and run away. However, to my surprise the Baby Pokemon twisted in midair and fired a large Shadow Ball down towards Dual. The black sphere exploded on Dual's forearms, and he grunted as the corrosive energy ate at his stamina.

The Wild Pokemon's feet tapped the ceiling, and suddenly it disappeared right through the rock, almost like it was sucked in. My jaw dropped - it looked almost exactly the same as Dual's Shadow Sneak technique. In fact, I was sure it was, because moments later the Mime Jr rocketed up from under Dual, delivering a crisp uppercut to his Jaw. Still, Dual was strong, and took the attack well before backing up a little bit. I punched the wall angrily - my Gallade had been hurt, all again because of something I had overlooked. Still, the Mime Jr was looking pretty wasted. It must have taken a lot of effort to copy Shadow Sneak from Dual - I was pretty sure that Mime Jr didn't learn Shadow Sneak naturally. Hopefully this time I could finish off the Wild Pokemon quickly.

"I'm sorry about that, there must have been something I overlooked," I apologised to my Pokemon. "We'll worry about it later. For now, just strike with a lightning-fast Feint, and then I'll heal you up with some Energy Powder."

Dual nodded and then ran towards the Mime Jr. He held his body low to maximise the short-term speed he generated, and his hands were open with his palms pointed towards his opponent. Feint was a special close-combat fighting technique that always hit through a Pokemon's guard. Dual had tried to explain it to me once - it had to do with keeping one's hands thin and flexible. I pushed it out of my mind and watched my Pokemon quietly, preparing to heal him with the Energy Powder that was in my basket. Hopefully this time the Mime Jr would go down like it was supposed to.

Dual's feet made solid tapping sounds as he ran on the rock towards the Mime Jr. The Baby Pokemon was so tired it couldn't even keep its head up, and for a couple seconds I felt bad about having my warrior Pokemon beat it up. However, I remembered that the Mime Jr. had chosen to battle Dual, and even if it didn't win against my Gallade it would still earn valuable battle experience, which would in turn teach it new moves and help it to evolve.

The Gallade bent low and reached out with his right hand. He placed it almost delicately on the Wild Pokemon's tiny chest, and then twisted his forearm with a sharp jerking motion. This caused the Mime Jr to go flying backwards at a speed I wouldn't have believed possible. It was launched through the air before striking one of the cave walls. The Pokemon squeaked as it hit the rock, and then it fell onto the ground. It looked up at Dual and blinked a couple times before waddling off. By the way it shuffled from side to side I could tell it was a little rattled. Still, the important thing was that it was leaving us.

"Nice job, Dual," I said to my Gallade as I walked over. "I'm just sorry that I screwed up earlier."

<Don't worry about it,> he replied firmly. <I held back on the Shadow Sneak's power because I don't like hitting children. That's probably why it managed to Mimic my move. Besides, it hardly hurt at all.>

"Still, you're going to have to take some of this Energy Powder." I held out the small bag. I knew Dual wouldn't be happy about it - while the powder was incredibly healthy and stacked with minerals and vitamins, it didn't taste very nice. Originally, the National Park stocked Potions like the mainland, but careless Trainers left containers lying all over the island because they didn't like lugging the empty bottles around. The powders were kept in tiny bags made up of a single piece of paper, which were much easier to cart around. The only downside was that the Pokemon hated the taste, but it was the humans' fault for ruining the environment.

Just like I knew he would, Dual grumbled unhappily, but for once he didn't argue with me. He took the bag and un-did the fancy ribbon before pouring the powder out into his other hand. He looked at and grimaced, then licked his lips and poured the powder into his mouth. The Gallade shuddered and handed the piece of paper and the ribbon back to me, and I stuffed it away inside one of the lower pockets in my pants.

<Ugh, this stuff tastes like stale ass that's been cremated then pissed on by a pickle,> he complained.

"Oh suck it up, you child," I said to Dual in a mock-stern voice. He grinned at me and we moved on. People often saw Dual as a humourless, serious Pokemon. Admittedly, he was like that most of the time. But just like any other person, if you got close you saw his true personality. He had formed complex bonds of friendship with both myself and my little brother (his original Trainer), and around us he was very comfortable. He also automatically defended and cared for any Ralts and Kirlia that we came across in the Park, and most amusingly, he acted like a horny teenager around any Gardevoir he came across.

We walked on down the tunnel, noting a small child-size side-passage that the Mime Jr. no doubt used to escape. If it wasn't for the purple glow of Dual's blades, it would have been pitch black. I groaned each time a drip of water hit my face - I was sure that the occurrence was much more often than the law of probability allowed.

After a couple of minutes, I saw a soft luminescence up ahead. The light was green and soft, and kind of reminded me of moonlight. I whispered for Dual to shut his Psycho Cut light off, and we crept forward. The tunnel started to widen and I noticed that the soft light was being given off by some glowing mushrooms. I'd never seen them before, but no doubt there were records of their existence in the Archives. They knew about everything all over the Park in there. I bent down low to examine the plants up close.

<James, come over here,> Dual sent through our link. <There's something I think you'll want to see.>

I straightened up and walked over to Dual, who was a little further up the passage. He pointed down towards the ground, and what I saw made me grin. A Wild Golett was napping there. I thought it was kinda cute, what with its round blue body, stubby arms and yellow swirl-mark on its chest. The swirl was pulsing gently, probably a sign that the Pokemon was asleep. This was perfect - a rare Pokemon that wasn't too high-level. Exactly the kind of creature I needed to catch to get a great score in the Contest.

"Alright, let's take this thing on," I said to Dual. "They're mostly physical fighters, so put up a Reflect, then hit it with a Magical Leaf."

<I'm not going to fight it while it's asleep,> the Gallade remarked.

I sighed. "Fine then, wake it up."

Dual raised his hand to his mouth and made a sharp whistling sound. I didn't see whether or not the Golett woke up, because I was carefully backing away from the battleground. All I knew and cared about was that that whistle would satisfy Dual's warrior code.

My Gallade raised his hands and held them palms-out in front of him. Pink stripes of light began to strobe in front of him, and the rectangular Reflect took a definitive shape. Reflect along with Light Screen were some of Dual's favourite moves - he liked combining them and Protect to make an impenetrable barrier that he wore on his arm like a buckler. Still, that was overkill for a Pokemon like this - a Reflect would be enough, just to be careful.

When the defensive screen was in place, Dual took a step back and crossed his arms in front of his face. Green energy gathered around his hands; initially it was mist-like and indeterminate, but the energy settled into the shape of maple leaves. I knew they were modeled off of those particular leaves because they had lots of points and so therefore could inflict the most damage. When Dual was a Kirlia the leaves had been normal roughly-circular ones, and he had launched Magical Leaves by performing a spinning dance. He hadn't minded it then, but now that he was a Gallade, he felt that spinning around like a child was demeaning. I liked the new way he performed the attack anyway - it made him look like a ninja throwing a handful of shuriken.

The green mists stopped swirling around Dual's hands, so I knew the Magical Leaves were complete. The Galade brought both of his hands scything down in an X shape, and the leaves spun away. They passed straight through the shield - being a Reflect, it only affected physical attacks - and they spun smoothly in a well-defined arc towards the Golett. My only worry was that the Golett was Ghost-typed, which meant it had a natural advantage over Dual, and they were almost as tricky as Psychic types.

As the green leaves left Dual's hand, I saw a silver light shine from where the Golett had been dozing. I peered carefully around the corner and saw that its blue armour was glowing bright silver. No doubt it was raising its defense, but I had planned on that. Anyone who looked at Dual could easily tell that he was a physical fighter, so they would instantly raise their physical guard. By sticking to long-range moves, I could avoid the boosts that the Golett was utilising now.

The Magical Leaf attack thudded violently into the Wild Pokemon, actually knocking it out of its defensive maneuver. Each leaf made a cringe-inducing thud as it made contact with the Golett and knocked it back a bit. They stuck into the Ghost-type's armour and stayed there, which actually helped - the natural green light of the leaves would assist Dual in keeping an eye on his opponent.

It wasn't long before the Ghost-type had recovered from the attack. Despite the Magical Leaf being a super-effective attack, Dual's long-range offensive stats weren't magnificent without reinforcement, so the attack wouldn't have done much more than sting a whole lot. Still, that was to my advantage right now as I was trying to capture this Golett, not defeat it.

The Golett coated its fist in black/gray energy and began running towards my Gallade with the fist outstretched. The Wild Pokemon slammed into the defensive Reflect Dual had set up, and after a moment of struggling managed to pass through. This wasn't a fault in the Reflect - very few shields could completely deflect an incoming attack. Instead, the Reflect and Light Screen shields worked on the premise that long-term deflection was better than short-term absorption. Sure, Dual was about to be hit by an attack, but it would be severely weakened, and the Reflect would remain, unlike a Protect or Detect.

The Shadow Punch struck Dual's upper stomach, below the red crest on his chest, no doubt because the Golett was short and couldn't reach any higher on my Gallade's body. Still, it was strong enough to wind Dual a little bit, even after passing the Reflect. It was probably because the Ghost type was one of the only two types that Dual was weak to, with the other being Flying. Thankfully Dual wasn't afraid (or rather, incredibly cautious) around Ghosts the way he was with bird Pokemon.

"Dual, back up and keep some distance, the only way to win this thing is by keeping it long-range," I ordered. "Fire off an Icy Wind as you do so - maybe the icicles will hinder the Golett's movement."

Dual kicked back off the rock, fleeing away from the Golett and its still-glowing fist. The Reflect barrier followed obediently, staying the exact-same distance away from Dual no matter what. When Dual was about fifteen metres away from the Golett he put his feet back down onto the rock, skidding to a stop and kicking small trails of dust into the air. He raised his hand to his mouth and took a deep breath before exhaling loudly. A small light-blue spark ignited over the Gallade's hand, and when his breath rushed across it a miniature snow-storm was born. The white winds raced towards the Golett, bringing along small pieces of rock that they picked up on the tunnel floor with them. I clutched at my jacket, drawing it close around me - even this small Ice attack could make me feel uncomfortably cold.

"Once that attack is done, follow up with a Hypnosis!" I yelled. "Make sure you go right for the Golett's eyes!"

The whistling wind sound ended, and I saw Dual lower his hand and close his eyes. He was completely motionless for a couple of seconds, and then he opened his eyes and stared directly towards the Wild Pokemon. His normally red eyes were a deep and glowing blue, and small blue circles began glowing around his head - they almost looked like the incredibly cheesy oversized glasses that people wore at carnivals and on Halloween. I knew from experience that all the Golett had to do was look at the Gallade's eyes and it would fall asleep. When Dual was a Ralts, his favourite attack combination was to use Hypnosis to put his enemies to sleep, and then steal their energy using Dream Eater. He still used this combination occasionally as a Gallade - the combo's healing potential was almost as reliable as Drain Punch or Wish, and it was slightly better than Pain Split. Not for the first time did I wish Dual could use Heal Pulse on himself. Unfortunately, the healing energy that was summoned out from within when using Heal Pulse didn't work on the user - the theory was that the well-wishing and inner power of the user healed their friend. You can't really heal yourself with mental determination.

I decided on Hypnosis because every Trainer who ever existed knew that catching a Pokemon was much easier if they were asleep. I would also like to get a second status condition on the Golett, but since the Pokemon was also Ground-typed, Thunder Wave would have no effect. That meant either a burn from Will-o-Wisp or a Toxic attack, and both of those were incredibly dangerous over the long term. If I was to do that, I'd want it to be right before I attempted the capture, and I wasn't quite ready to throw a ball yet. I wanted to see how the Icy Wind and Hypnosis affected the Golett before making any more decisions about this battle.

The Icy Wind worked exactly as I hoped it would. The blue winds curled around the Ghost-type, swirling like a tornado. The Golett started shivering and it retracted its arms and legs as far into its body as they could go in an attempt to fight off the cold. Small icicles began to grow around the Ghost-type's legs, and they didn't stop growing until the Pokemon's entire lower body was sheathed in ice. It tugged at the ice, but wasn't able to break free. The whole sight was kind of amusing and I couldn't keep down a small laugh. The Golett must have been annoyed because the shaking stopped almost instantly. It slowly bent down and picked up two big handfuls of mud. It took me a while to realise that the mud must have been formed by the moisture from Dual's Icy Wind attack.

Mud flew from the Golett's hands towards my Gallade. They passed straight through the Reflect shield on their way to the Psychic-type. The first glob landed on Dual's leg, and he groaned unhappily. The next one was much worse, though: it hit Dual smack-bang in his face. He recoiled and backed up a few steps, wiping at his face with his hands. Unfortunately, this caused the mud to streak across his eyes, impairing his vision even more than it was before.

"Dual, dab at it, don't rub!" I yelled.

<There's mud in my damn eyes,> the Gallade retorted angrily.

"If you don't dab, it's not going away," I said through gritted teeth.

Dual snorted, but started patting and pulled the mud away from his eyes with one knuckle instead of wiping at it with his entire palm. After about half a minute his vision was sufficiently restored for him to begin his Hypnosis. His red eyes become coated in a pearlescent shade of blue, and twin rings of the same colour expanded out from his eyes. He looked straight at the Golett, trying to get into eye contact with the Wild Pokemon. Unfortunately, the Automaton Pokemon wasn't buying it. Whether it had knowledge about the move, was used to seeing it used here in Meteor Valley by the local inhabitants (Hypnosis was a common move amongst Psychic and Ghost Pokemon) or just had really good instincts, the Ghost-type knew to look away. In response, the small blue Pokemon erected a white shield with its hands, which slowly grew to cover its entire body like a second skin. The soft white glow perfectly covered the Pokemon, and it looked like a defensive technique. I started chewing my lip, desperately trying to remember Golett's movepool and what move this could possibly be.

My eyes shot wide open and my jaw dropped. The white shield could only be one thing. It wasn't silver, so it wasn't an Iron Defense like before, and Substitutes usually made copies of the Pokemon as opposed to a shield. No, this was a Safeguard, a shield that belonged to the same family as Reflect and Light Screen. It lasted as long as the other shields, so waiting for it to wear off wasn't an option, but its effect was arguably more annoying - the user was completely protected from status conditions. That means I wouldn't be able to burn or toxic or even put the Golett to sleep to help with the capture. I swore loudly, and the word's sharp ending echoed around the tunnel. Dual switched off his Hypnosis and looked back at me, shocked. I didn't usually swear, but right now I was incredibly pissed off. Not only would the Golett be much harder to capture now, but I wouldn't get any bonus points for statusing the Pokemon. I guess it wasn't a big deal because it wouldn't look good for one of us Elite Rangers to win the first ever Catching Contest, but still, it irritated me.

"That bastardly Golett," I spat, lowering my head and trying to think. If status afflictions were out, the only option I had left was lowering its health to dangerous levels. I hated doing that, but I wasn't going to be able to capture the Ghost-type now without taking a couple risks. The problem was further complicated by the mud that was gunking up Dual's eyes - while he would have gotten off most of it, no doubt his vision was still impaired. I'd have to use a move with incredibly high accuracy. Swift came to mind immediately, but the Golett was Ghost-typed so the magical stars would be of no use. Next came Shock Wave, but that was useless too - Golurk's Ground typing negated electrical attacks, which made it a very valuable Ghost-type indeed. Aerial Ace was a possibility, but the quick strike required Dual to get close to his target, and even though the Golett was partially trapped in ice I didn't want Dual to get anywhere near it. The Gallade's physical defenses weren't great at the best of times.

All of these problems left only one move. Magical Leaf. It was super-effective and always hit, and because it was long-range Dual wouldn't need to get anywhere near the Automaton Pokemon. I just hoped that the damage wouldn't be too much for the sturdy little Pokemon to bear. My eyes narrowed as I inspected the Golett carefully - it was yanking and smashing at the ice, which wouldn't last much longer. No, I was sure of it - the Wild Pokemon could sustain one more supereffective hit.

"Dual, fire off another Magical Leaf," I commanded as my hand slowly moved towards the basket. My initial plan had been to burn the Golett and then put it to sleep before using a Great Ball. Now, however, I wasn't sure that the Great Ball would be enough. I doubted that I'd come across anything better as I only had one encounter left, and I wanted to be absolutely sure about this Golurk.

My Gallade closed his eyes and crossed his forearms over his face once more. The green energy gathered, and the remainders of the leaves that were still sticking into the Golurk seemed to shine brighter at the revival of the natural energy. I didn't know how the leaves always found their target - it could have been heat-seeking, life seeking, hell, for all I know they sought out conscious thought or were guided by an orbital satellite with x-ray vision. However they did it, they always hit, and that was what I was counting on now.

When the Magical Leaves were formed, Dual threw them. Instead of throwing them directly at his target like last time, however, he threw them in a circle. The leaves shot towards the tunnel walls for a second before curving sharply and readjusting their trajectory so they were aiming for the Golett. I pulled the Hyper Ball out of the basket and held it in my hands, which were slippery with sweat. The second the leaves had done their job, I'd tag the Pokemon and hopefully put an end to this battle.

Dual's Magical Leaves all struck the Golett at the same time, knocking it onto the ground. It struggled to get up, but it couldn't do so. I knew that right now would be the best time to try and capture it; the Ghost-type wouldn't be able to withstand another hit.

I threw the Hyper Ball towards the Pokemon, and it struck the Golett's blue armour. The Wild Pokemon was absorbed into the capture device, where it shook back and forth for a couple seconds before laying still. A grin spread across my face and I grabbed the sphere gleefully.

"Great job!" I congratulated my Gallade.

<No problem,> he said roughly before wiping vigorously at his face with his hands. I sighed and pushed them away before cleaning his face with a bandage from my medkit.

"You big wuss," I chided him. I stashed the dirty padding away and together we continued down the tunnel. Somewhat surprisingly, after a couple of turns I saw light up ahead. I was careful to take it slow and look down at the ground instead of straight into the light - doing that could blind me, but by watching neutral tones that gradually increased in brightness I could retain my eye functions.

When my eyes were fully restored to working in bright sunlight, I took a look around the tunnel exit. There didn't seem to be anything of interest, so I took a couple steps outside. That was when a Xatu fluttered down and perched on a rock in front of me. It cawed at me and held its wings in that weird angular fashion that was unique to its species.

My fingers twitched. I really wanted to try and capture it - the Xatu reminded me of River Tam, Buzz's Xatu, which was supposed to be the strongest Xatu in the entirety of the Pokemon League. Still, I knew I'd only be able to withdraw one Pokemon from this event, and I wanted the Golett more than I wanted this Xatu. Furthermore, Dual had taken a beating from the last battle - I wasn't sure he'd be able to get past this one as well. Flying attacks were the only kind of attacks he actually feared.

"Not today, sorry," I said to the Xatu as I reached for the PokeDoll in my backpack. "But I'll try to come back another time."

I threw the doll towards the Xatu, and then I reached for the other Energy Powder packet, intending to give it to Dual. Sure, he probably didn't need it now that my Contest Expedition was over, but part of the judging criteria was how healthy your Pokemon was at the end, so Dual had to look his best. As soon as we got past this Xatu, I'd feed it to him.

You throw the doll to Xatu and proceeded past the distracted Pokemon. You reach the gates of Meteor Valley and you run is over.
