My fourth trip into the Enigma Ruins was about to take place for a person I had run into many times, but had never rangered for. The trainer was an accomplish battler and member of the elite four, not to mention well known among the newer trainer as they looked up to him. When I had started out as a trainer many years back he was one I looked up to then, it was cool to see him active once more.

I was hopeful that the run into the Ruins would be a good trip for him. His last National Park he had caught the ultra rare Larvesta, a powerful Bug and Fire Pokemon that many people coveted. I was currently working to get one right now. I had a promising area where I was sure the Pokemon was living.

After I got some free time from my ranger duties I would head out to that area and hunt it down and hopefully add it to my team. But first, I had to clear this run off my plate. Since we would only be running into basic Pokemon that weren’t particularly powerful I had only opted to take two Pokemon. I had packed my full ranger supplies just incase something bad happened--one could never be too careful.

I drove the short distance to the entrance to the Ruins, got out of the jeep and waited for Chris to show up so we could get this run started.

@AmericanTreeFrog; xd oops Sheer Force! And okay boss!

I approached the special gates to Engima Ruins. This place seemed exciting and I read the brochure of this place in the Park office. I hope I can use everything that Ivy had taught me, and proceed well here. I was a little nervous on my new Ranger, apparently his names is Gaius Tyrannius. I’ve heard some rumors about this fellow, however I am sure he is welcoming.

I walked a short distance into the Engima ruins and noticed my Ranger stood their waiting for me. I tiptoed a little close to my Ranger. I stood still in front of him and took a deep breath. A nervous breath, I might add.

“Sorry, I am a little late,” I said, and apologised. “My name is Chris, but you already know that. Let’s get started!” I gave thumbs up to my Ranger and awaited his lead. This Park Run will be fun!

“Sorry, I am late,” Chris said, coming up to me and apologizing. “My name is Chris, but you already know that. Let’s get started!” he finished, giving my a thumbs up.

“No need to apologize. You’re on time, I just like to get here early. Nice catch with that Larvesta, really good effort.” I was referring to his previous run. I tended to check the reports of the other rangers to keep informed, and that battle had impressed me. “This should be a fun outing, let’s hope you run into some good stuff.”

I unlocked the gates and led us inside. The Enigma Ruins were just that, ruins. They were called Enigma because the creators had made it so the ruins weaved illusions for people entering. Sometimes one would be able to catch a glimpse of the real ruins, but for the most past they remained a mystery.

We walked past the opening archway and the ruins shimmered before fading away. The stone was replaced by trees and grass, with a large lake to our right. The ruins were mimicking the Great Lakes, an area known for its Water types.

I pointed at the lake and indicated we should explore that area first. I moved towards the lake and immediately spotted a small fish swimming on the clear waters. It was a Tympole, a Pokemon that would eventually evolve into the Water and Ground Pokemon called Seismitoad.

“You want one?” I asked Chris?

    @AmericanTreeFrog;

As I said sorry, my Ranger shortly replied.

“No need to apologize. You’re on time; I just like to get here early. Nice catch with that Larvesta, really good effort.” I was quite surprised he knew so much about my Larvesta that took a lot of effort, and work to capture. I am so pleased Gaius was impressed. (That means that capture made me look good.)

“Why thank you!” I said. “It was a lot of effort, and my Pokemon did extremely well!”

“This should be a fun outing, let’s hope you run into some good stuff.” I was hoping the same too, I could really do a with a Chingling or a Croagunk! However, we will see! Gaius unlocked the gates and led us inside. The Enigma ruins seemed scary and a field of unknown to me. I followed my Ranger slowly through an opening archway. Then we stumbled some trees and grass with a large lake. It seemed like an illusion of some sorts but it was so real.

“Wow, this is a weird place,” I said, and breathed. “I hope I can muster this area for decent captures.” Gaius then pointed at the lake. He moved over in the direction of the lake, and I followed. Suddenly, a small, light-blue fish creature was casually swimming on the clear waters.

“You want one?” Gaius said to me. It was a Tympole, a small Ground/Water Pokemon. I’ve never really found them interesting to me, since I was more of a Poison/Psychic Pokemon person.

“I would like to pass please,” I said, and hoped to move on. “It looks peaceful as it is. If I must, I shall use a Pokedoll please.”

“I would like to pass please,” Chris replied without much though. “It looks peaceful as it it. If I must, I shall use a Pokedoll.”

As if on cue, the Tympole gave us one last look before it dived back underwater. It didn’t hold much interest for us either, that was a good thing since Chris didn’t want to catch it. I shrugged at Chris and continued forward. I expected the area to change once the Tympole was gone, but when it stayed I knew that another Pokemon had to be afoot. I started to scan the water once more, but when I didn’t find anything I turned to shore.

Sure enough I spotted a Pokemon digging in the sand. It’s bright orange-red shell and large pincers told me that it was a Corphish, a Water type Pokemon that would evolve into a Water and Dark type called Crawdaunt.

I pointed the Pokemon out to Chris. “Do you fancy a Corphish?”

As I asked to move on. The Tympole gave me and Gaius one look and dived back underwater. That Tympole was a cute Pokemon, however I would much rather capture something else this time. Gaius shrugged at me and continued forward. I shortly followed him, wondering what else was in stall for me.

“It sure is nice in these strange ruins,” I said to myself. “I wonder what amazing creature I will encounter soon!” I was quite content with my Enigma Ruins visit. I noticed Gaius scanning the area of water again. I thought to myself that there were no other creatures in the water… Well creatures that wanted to come out and play.

I watched carefully as my ranger scanned the shore… There was a shelled creature digging in the sand. It looked like a Corphish. They were cool Pokemon; it reminds me of Team Aqua! Gaius pointed to the Corphish.

“Do you fancy a Corphish?” He said.

“I would like to pass please,” I replied. “I know I should probably capture something soon, however I would like to save my Pokemon’s energy for something later.” I then readied my money for a Pokedoll in case we could not easily escape!

    $40750 – 500 = 40250

“I would like to pass please,” Chris replied with a moment of thought concerning the Corphish. “I know I should probably capture something soon. However, I would like to save my Pokemon’s energy for something later.” He grabbed some money from his wallet to show me that he was ready to pay for a Pokedoll to escape the Water Pokemon.

I was about to reply that we could probably leave without attracting attention to us when the Corphish suddenly looked up at us. He snapped his pincers aggressively and scuttled towards us. It was prepared to defend its territory against the intruders. I felt the weight of Chris’s cash in my palm and passed over a Tynamo Pokedoll in trade.

Chris took the doll and dropped it in the path of the Corphish. The Corphish skidded to a halt and snagged the doll with a claw. It tore the doll in half and walked away with a piece in each claw. I shrugged at Chris and turned from the path, heading deeper into the lake region.

This time the environment changed to that of a heavily wooded one. This was the part of the park aptly named the woods. Mostly Bug, Normal, Flying, and Grass types were around here. None of those really interested me so I had never been here as a trainer, but I knew a few people who had been here before.

Our next encounter popped out from behind a tree and looked us over intently. Its large ears and pink skin told me that it was a Whismur, a Pokemon that would eventually evolve into Exploud. It was a fairly weak Normal type, but that didn’t mean Chris didn’t want it.

My Ranger Gaius passed me a Tynamo Pokedoll, which my money exchanged for. Corphish seemed to clang its pincers rapidly, just to protect its territory. I quickly threw the doll down and it swiped it away. I suddenly watched the red crab slice the Pokedoll in half with its claws. I shrugged my shoulders and turned to the path. We were heading deeper into the lake region.

“I am sorry, Gaius,” I said to my ranger. “These are not what I am looking for!” Suddenly, he led me to a heavily wooded environment. This place seemed to be where Bug or Grass Pokemon were hiding.

Suddenly, from behind the tree was a large creature with pink skin. A Whismur, Gaius did not say anything, but I think he knew… that I knew what it was.

“I would like to pass,” I said. “If I cannot escape I might have to buy another doll!” 40250 – 500 = 39750

Chris saw the Whismur and responded. “I would like to pass,” he started, “if I cannot escape I might have to buy another doll.”

“I understand,” I responded. Avoiding the Whismur wasn’t really a surprise, I would have been surprised if he had decided to catch the Pokemon. Whismur was a Pokemon somebody caught only because they wanted the Pokemon specifically, it was a desperation capture, or because they were collecting all the Normal types.

I looked at the Whismur and stepped around it, leading Chris away from it. To both our dismay, the Whismur decided to stick around and started to follow us. Myself and Chris exchanged looks before he handed over some money, and I gave a Pokedoll to the Whismur. The Whismur bounced excitedly at the toy before grabbing it and rushing away into the undergrowth.

Soon as the Whismur was gone from sight the woods faded away to be replaced by a rocky valley filled with caves and large boulders. I spotted a small pink and purple Pokemon I had never before seen in person. It was a Munna, a Psychic Pokemon that a few trainer had. I didn’t know if Chris had one, but I knew he was a Psychic collector.

    “You have a Munna?”

As we walked away from Whismur it started to follow us. I looked at Gaius and handed over $500 in money for the doll’s entrance. I watched as my Ranger gave it the Pokedoll. It seemed very excited and rushed away into the bushes.

“That was cute to see,” I said to myself. I followed Gaius. The wood faded away and was replaced with a rocky valley filled with caves and large boulders. Suddenly a Munna appeared. It was quite typical…

“You have a Munna?” Gaius asked. I was kind of annoyed at this encounter, I breathed slowly and responded.

“TYPICAL,” I shouted. “I recently got traded a Munna, therefore we should get moving. If all else fails, I will buy another doll!”

“Typical!” Chris shouted energetically. “I recently got traded a Munna, therefore we should get moving. If all else fails, I will buy another doll.”

I winced at his words, now that really sucked. It reminded of a song called ironic, and this encounter would have fit in there perfectly. I hoped it hadn’t traded anything really good for it, because that would have just made it that much more bittersweet.

“Let’s hope the Munna feels sympathy.” I turned towards one of the paths and started along it. I heard a sound and glanced back to see the Munna trailing us. I exchanged an exasperated glance with Chris as he handed over some more money to me, and I threw a Pokedoll at the Munna.

As the Munna altered course to go after the toy, I continued to lead us down the path. A few seconds later the scene shifted ever so slightly. We were still in a rocky and cavernous place, but now we were on the flank of a large volcano, a place known for its Ground, Rock, and Fire type Pokemon. I hoped Chris was looking for one of those types.

Because we were still on a path I decided that we would continue to follow it. As we followed the twisting trail I spotted a new Pokemon. It was a small orange puppy with black stripes running horizontally. It was Growlithe, a Fire Pokemon that would evolve into Arcanine, a powerful Pokemon.

“You want to own a dog?”

As I said I got Munna via trade, Gaius winced at my words. It seemed he felt sorry for me. Bless him, he had a soft soul. Or so it seemed.

“Let’s hope the Munna feels sympathy,” Gaius turned to me. I followed slowly behind him to walk across a path. Suddenly, I heard a sound, and Munna was trailing us. Gaius took my money and tossed a Pokedoll at the Pokemon. Luckily the Munna took the bait and altered course after the doll. I followed Gaius down a new path and it suddenly had a scorched atmosphere. It was a volcano, it reminded of being at Mt.Deckbi.

“This seems familiar,” I said. A Growlithe trotted towards us.

“You want to own a dog?” Gaius said.

“I replied, I shall pass,” I said. “My Arcanine is strong on its own.” I readied my money just in case. 39250 – 500 = 38750

“I shall pass,” Chris said without hesitation. “My Arcanine is strong on its own.”

I agreed with his reasoning. I never caught a Pokemon I already had unless it was really good and could be used in a double situation like a Dragonite could. Or if it was a Pokemon that many people wanted and were willing to trade for it. While Arcanine was a really good Pokemon it just wasn’t good enough that many people wanted it.

The Growlithe sniffed about us then proceeded along the trail heading down. I nodded in approval at the back of the Growlithe, the Pokemon was saving Chris money by choosing to move along and not sticking around.

I led us up the trail some more and about forty seconds later the Ruins switched again. This area was the exact opposite of the once we were just in. Instead of a hot environment we were in a wet one, the Great Lakes. Before us was a small pond, and it was an orange Pokemon swimming lazily about. One of the most common Pokemon in the game, Magikarp. I sighed and pointed it out towards Chris.

    'Americantreefrog;

After I decided to skip Growlithe. Gaius slowly took me away. However, Growlithe just sniffed about us and headed off down another trail. Gaius nodded, and I followed behind him. It saved me money for buying a Pokedoll, which is good. I followed Gaius, where he took me up a trail. Suddenly the scenary changed again. The ruins had turned to the exact opposite from the fiery volcanic to a great lake.

"Wow, what change," I said baffled. I noticed a small pond and wimpy looking karp flopping around in it. Gaius pointed and sighed at the Magikarp.

"Let's escape from this," I said. "If I have to pay, I will but let's try to run first!

“Let’s escape from this,” Chris said without preamble. “If I have to pay, I will, but let’s try to run first.”

I opened my mouth to reply, but was soon spluttering at Magikarp started to splash water at the both of us. Soon as I wiped the water from my face the Pokemon started to splash some more at the both of us. Chris gave me some more money and I tossed a Tympole Pokedoll at the Magikarp.

The Magikarp snagged the doll and dived underwater. Thankful to be away from the pesky Pokemon I led us away from the area. I decided to head for a plot of trees, but before we could get there the scene changed once more. We were in a now heavily forested area.

I heard a chirping sound and looked up to see a bird Pokemon in a nest in a tree nearby. It’s brown feathers and duck-like appearance told me that it was a Farfetch’d. I didn’t know much about this Pokemon, so I couldn’t say whether or not it would be a good catch.

There is a Farfetch’d up in that tree if you want to battle it.”

As me and Gaius tried to escape. Magikarp kept splashing at him and I. Looks like my doll had to be used. I gave my money to Gaius and he tossed a Tympole doll at the wimpy fish. Suddenly, Magikarp dived underwater.

"Persistent fish," I chuckled to myself. Gaius led us to a new scenary, and it was a heavy forest full of lots of greenary. I heard chirping sounds. Gaius looked up and saw a bird creature nesting in the tree nearby. I noticed it had brown feathers and a duck-like appearance. It appeared to be a Farfetch'd. They were interesting, let's capture it I thought to myself.

"There is a Farfetch'd up in that tree if you want to battle it." Gaius said to me.

"I will!" I shouted. "Let's go Cryogonal!" I tossed a Pokeball and it shafted open my icey mirror, with sharp edges. It pierced its eyes at Farfetch'd.

"Good morning Cryogonal," I said. "No Rage Mode today please." Me and Cryogonal got along, however sometimes my icey mirror got too hyped in battles. Being a Modest Pokemon as well was weird with its traits of anger. A lovely Pokemon with me though.

"Aim quickly at Farfetch'd in that tree with a Icy Wind," I said. "We must slow it down!"

“I will!” Chris said, excited by the appearance of the Flying Pokemon. “Let’s go Cryogonal!” He dropped a hand to his waist and came up with a Pokeball. He tossed it forward a purple mirror-like Pokemon popped out. “Good morning, Cryogonal, no rage mode today please. Aim quickly at Farfetch’d in that tree with an Icy Wind. We must slow it down!”

Cryogonal’s eyes, which mostly appeared to be glowing balls of energy, turned up to face the now interested Farfetch’d. The Ice type’s eyes flashed and a sudden gust of wind sprang from its body. The wind swept towards the Flying type, causing everything in its path to form ice crystals.

The Farfetch’d screeched in alarm and tumbled from the tree as the Pokemon came into contact with the Ice attack. Ice formed around its winds and webbed feet, hindering its movement.

The Farfetch’d looked at Cryogonal and started to flap its winds hard. The Flying attack battered Cryogonal repeated with razor-sharp wind attacks. Being Ice type, the Flying attacks barely did damage to the Pokemon, it mostly just cut through some of the ice on its body.

The Farfetch’d wasn’t in that good a position though. The tree and nest had provided a weak shield, but enough had got through that it injured the Pokemon. It was at a stark disadvantage against the Cryogonal, but it could still dish some damage.

ooc: sorry let's make it female

I watched as Cryognal levitated across the forest-like area. The icy mirror’s eyes started to glow balls of energy. They were darted in the direction of the weird looking bird. Farfetch’d did not seem scared at all. Perhaps the cold ice or the Icy Wind will change that! Mwuahaha. As the Cold, frosted Icy Wind attack flushed through the air, they turned into sharp, ice crystals.

“Take that bird,” I said, and smiled. Farfetched seemed to squawk in shock and fell from the tree. Suddenly, the sub-zero wind buffeted the screechy winged-beast. I was quite impressed Cryogonal had not entered rage mode yet. I gave thumbs up.

“Good job, Cryogonal,” I said, and smiled. Cryogonal flickered its eyes in happiness. Suddenly, Farfetch’d seemed to get agitated and glared at my icy creature. It flapped its brown wings hard. Unexpectedly my frosty Pokemon was buffeted repeatedly by Razor Wing attacks. Luckily, Cryogonal was an Ice-Type Pokemon and did not take much damage.

“Just a scratch,” I said to Cryogonal. “You should be fine.” Small ice particles cascaded to the forest’s ground, and started to melt in the sun slightly. Now I had to plot what to do next. This Farfetch’d had no intention of running away and I will not let it escape either! Perhaps I should make a direct, strong attack. Hopefully I could freeze up the cranky bird wings with an Ice Beam. That way it won’t rely on aerial moves.

“Cryogonal, let’s try an Ice Beam on Farfetch’d’s wings,” I shouted, and then pointed to the bird. “That way we can help reduce all damage to you!” Cryogonal turned around to me and nodded. I have such a good relationship with the icy mirror that it would always obey me! Cryognal started to levitate in circles and prepared Ice Beam.

“Just a scratch,” Chris said to Cryogonal, in response to the Farfetch’d using Air Slash on his Pokemon. “You should be fine.” He looked about the forest, considering his next move to use on the Flying and Normal type Pokemon.

“Cryogonal,” he started, “let’s try an icebeam on Farfetch’d’s wings. That was we can help reduce all damage to you!”

A smart move by Chris. Farfetch’d being a Flying type relied on its wings for numerous things, not just attacking, but speed as well. It’s speed had already taken a strong blow from the Icy Wind, the icebeam attack would just add to that, making it that much harder for the Pokemon to fight. While Chris was fighting the Pokemon with super-effective attacks, doing high amounts of damage, he was fighting smartly, doing everything he could to hinder the duck-like Pokemon.

Cryogonal gave another nod to its master and started to rise higher, to get the advantage on the earthbound bird. The gear-like structures circling its body started to rotate, building up a large amount of ice crystals. Cryogonal then opened its mouth and spewed forth a cool breath of air, which instantly froze when it came into contact with the crystals, producing a blue beam of energy that shot towards Farfetch.

The attack hit exactly where Chris wanted it too, the wings of the wild Pokemon. The cyan colored energy instantly froze some of Farfetch’s feathers, only partially freezing the Pokemon. By attacking the wings of Farfetch Chris had sacrificed some of Icebeam’s power, and thereby doing less damage than the attack normal would have.

Farfetch squawked at the attack, but quickly bolted into action. It seized the leek stem it liked to carry around and charged Cryogonal. Due to the ice though, the Ice Pokemon easily floated about the Pokemon. Farfetch narrowed its eyes in anger at Cryogonal. The point of its natural weapon turned purple and the Flying type flung the leek at Cryogonal. Chris’s Pokemon hadn’t expected this tactic and was hit by it. The leek bounced off the Pokemon to land at the feet of Farfetch, who quickly picked it back up and readied itself for the next attack that was sure to come.
