ALL RANGERS AND TRAINERS GOING TO MT. DECKBI ARE ADVISED TO STAY COOL AND HYDRATED.

A sign at the Front Gate warned all trainers not be cautious and to prevent overheating and dehydrating. Currently, there was an intense heat wave going through the park. No one knew why. It had just happened all of a sudden. Whoever was assinged the next trainer in line for Mt. Deckbi was also going to be tasked with investigating the sudden heatwave. I prayed that it wasn't me.

"Hey, Dee." The receptionist came in with a file in her hands. "I've got a trainer for you."

I sighed. The heatwave had caused the whole park to be on the warm side. Even Mt. Deckbi's icy mountains were starting to freeze. As a result, rangers and other officials had to constantly use their Pokemon to freeze the melting ice.

I opened the file to see where I would be going. I hoped I was going to the Woods, or even the Power Plant. At least, it would be a bit cool there. My stomach sunk when I saw the word "MT DECKBI" in all caps next to the word "location." I double-checked it to make sure I hadn't read Mt. Oktori instead, but sure enough, I was headed to the hot island that was home to one of the largest and only volcano of the whole region.

I sighed as I stood up and registered the file into my Browser. As much as I hated to have to go to Mt. Deckbi during the intense heatwave, I didn't really have much of a choice. Besides, it wasn't often that I was assigned to a mission.

"Well, Luxray," I said the electric Pokemon sleeping on the chair opposite my desk. "It looks like we're going to Mt. Deckbi."

Luxray yawned, stretched and was instantly by my side. I packed up the materials that I would need, some extra supplies, and a few bottles of water. Some were frozen so that I could be sure to have some cold water if the need arose.

"I'm heading out!" I alerted the receptionist.

"Have fun," she said in a smug voice.

"I'll try," I said under my breath.

I headed on out to Outpost #4 where I would meet my trainer. I didn't really know how he would be arriving. I looked at his file. I should be looking out for a tall male about my age.

Wiping the sweat off this brow, the lone figured trudged across the red-crusted earth, cursing the heat, the volcano, and himself for thinking that his national park visit was a good idea. The only reason he was out in this god forsaken heat was because he needed a fire pokemon on his team.

Shielding his eyes, Zeferin looked up to see if he could see the meeting spot. Over the landscape, through the hot, distorted air, Zeferin saw what he was looking for: a lone sign and a ranger approaching it.*

Letting out a sigh of relief, Zeferin reached behind his back and pulled one of the small capsules from his belt clip. Gripping the small, black Duskball, Zeferin clicked the release button on top, expanding the capsule to full size. With a final flick of his wrist, the ball flew from Zeferin's hand out over the land before erupting in an explosion of light.

Floating in place of where the light had been, a huge, black specter with a golden grin that encompassed the front of its body turned around to Zeferin and let out a loud, yawning, "Noooiiirr," stretching its arms high above its head.

"Good to see you too, Charon," said Zeferin who had already walked up to and passes by the stretching Pokemon. Looking back around, Zeferin called out, "You coming? I know you don't care about temperature, but I'm frying."

Turning to his trainer, Charon gave a wide smirk across his wide body. Raising one hand up, a cool blue aura formed around Charon's hand, aiming right at Zeferin. Suddenly, the aura shot out in beam, chilling the air as it shot down at the ground at Zeferin's feet. As the ice formed, Zeferin lost all footing, slipping down hard on frozen ground below. In a weak moan, Zeferin hissed, "You're such a smart ass."

Sliding over until he found unfrozen dirt, Zeferin slowly stood back up, flinching as his now sore muscles screamed in pain. All the while, a deep, rolling chuckle poured out over the area as Charon let loose his laughter. Turning back toward the outpost sign, Zeferin started back up towards the now waiting ranger. Turning back around to Charon, Zeferin whispered just outside earshot, "Ok, show time. Now behave!"

Turning towards the ranger, Zeferin greeted him with a smile and an outstretched hand to shake. "Hello. I guess your my ranger for this run. My name is Zeferin Muert."

Off in the distance, I could see a Pokémon trainer approaching me. I was already dreading the intensity of the heat, so I didn’t get too excited about seeing the trainer. The fear of seeing a mirage and overheating killed any excitement I had in my body. Any fears in my mind cleared up, however, when the figure had come within full view, and I could verify that it was indeed a real person approaching me.

"Hello. I guess you’re my ranger for this run,” the person said. “My name is Zeferin Muert."

He held out his hand to initiate a hand shake. I shook his hand and introduced myself.

“I’m Dante, but everyone in the park calls me Dee.” I said. “And this is Luxray. She’s been my partner since I first became a Pokémon trainer.”

Luxray ignored me when I motioned to her. I grinned a bit. Luxray wasn’t one to take introductions seriously. The electric Pokémon had taken to lying on the ground while we waited for the trainer to arrive. Now that he was here, I guess Luxray hadn’t seen fit to introduce herself. Perhaps she knew that I would do so myself.

“Well,” I said, motioning for the trainer to follow. “I’m sure you noticed the intense heat in this area.”

We continued walking towards the big mountain that towered over the center of the large desert island. Without giving the trainer a chance to respond, I continued to speak.

“The Head Ranger believes the dramatic rise in temperature is being caused by the increased amount of activity in Mt. Deckbi.” I pointed towards the volcano that the island was named after. “Usually, Mt. Deckbi is dormant and doesn’t give off much activity. That’s why I’ve been tasked with figuring out why the volcano is active all of a sudden. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind giving me a hand, would you?”

I smiled at the trainer that was following me. It wasn’t often that trainers were given the chance to help rangers out on field missions. We didn’t want to put any trainers in any danger, and only resorted to having a trainer participate in missions when all other rangers were also busy. Most of the time, however, trainers proved themselves to be of great help when dealing with park matters.

“So,” I said, looking back at the trainer. “What do you say?”

Zeferin took in what the ranger had said and chewed it over in his mind, seeing this play out to different ways. One: they climb all over the mountain and find nothing except burns and bruises. Two: They find the source of the heat and let the temperature drop to a reasonable heatwave instead of the inferno they were in now. After a few moments of pondering, Zeferin figured a few singed hairs and cuts were worth trying to cool this Hell hole down.

"Ok," said Zeferin back towards the ranger, "I'm ok with that. How about you Charon?" Turning back to his looming specter behind him, Zeferin gave a small nodding motion to signal to Charon that he really didn't have a choice in the matter.

Charon, not really paying attention, looked down long enough to see Zeferin's signal. letting out a small grunt in agreement, Charon yawned and looked around to see if there was anything that he could "play" with. Looking down at the Luxray next to the ranger, Charon made up his mind that he would use her a his new play-mate.

With a small force of his will, Charon's shadow sneaked towards Luxray, creeping slowly along the ground by Luxray's feet. Just before he could grab onto the back of her feet and trip her, Zeferin gave a sharp jab with is foot onto Charon's shadow, pinning it in place.

Giving him a soured, vexed look, Zeferin muttered to Charon, "Later. Can't you freaking behave for five minutes?!" Lifting his foot up, freeing Charon's shadow, Zeferin caught back up with the ranger and said, "Well, where shall he head off to first...Dante, was it?"

The trainer agreed to my conditions and decided to help me with the mission.

“Great,” I said as I shook his hand. I was glad that he’d said yes. Even if he’d declined the responsibility, I’d have found a way to coerce him into assisting me.

Meanwhile, while Zeferin and I were talking, his Dusknoir had attempted a sneak attack on Luxray. I laughed to myself when Zeferin had stepped on the ghost Pokémon’s shadow before he could do anything. Luxray didn’t seem bothered one bit.

After the trainer asked me where we were going to go, I pointed in the direction of a path. It was the usual path that rangers took trainers, even though we tended to stray from that path and make up our own. It was really just a path of gravel that happened to form that way, but we’d decided to adopt it as a guide.

“We’ll follow that path,” I said, pointing to the gravel path. Then, I decided to prepare the trainer for what we would see. “First, we’ll come upon a tunnel. After going through the tunnel, we’ll find ourselves in a wide open desert. Finally, we’ll be at the base of the mountain.”

I talked with a rather empathetic voice, but inside, I was dreading having to go through the desert: the hot sand, the lack of water, the dry air. It was a recipe for a heat stroke. Since I was a ranger, however, I had to just suck it in and do my job.

“Well, if you’re all set, let’s go,” I said as I motioned for the trainer to follow me.

**OOC: Hate to say it, but I'm running out of ideas of what I can do without saying "Zeferin runs into so-and-so Pokemon". I don't know if you want me to start my own encounter or if you want us to get going through this tunnel and desert and all. I'm just going with the following and hope it works.**

It took everything that Zeferin had to keep his mouth from dropping in shear shock at what the ranger had just told him. Over a hot, gravel trail, he could do. Through a hot, dark tunnel, manageable. Hell, he wouldn't even mind the climb up the volcano as long as it led to a way to cool off this heat way. But when the ranger said through the tunnel, into a desert of all places, and only then would they be at the mountain, Zeferin's gut lurched in pain at the thought of it all. Just barely able to keep a smile on, as phony as it may have looked, Zeferin said, "Well...no exactly what I was expecting. It seems that we will be having a..." Pausing only a moment to find the right words, he continued, "...an interesting trip."

Swallowing the lump that was forming in his throat from the strain of keeping up his facade, Zeferin turned to Charon and said, "Well, shall we go?"

Charon, though, was not in any mood to be smiling, even if it was a fake one. After hearing what the ranger had to say, Charon realized that this trip was going to be horrible. Not because of the heat: as a ghost, he couldn't feel the temperature. No, he was upset because where there is a lot of heat and little signs of civilization, that meant that there were going to be less people and pokemon to pester. Even the ones that were already with him were going to be too exhausted by the heat, so they were going to be no fun to pick on. From his perception there wasn't going to be a fun part at all with this trip.

Zeferin, Dee and Luxray, already half-way down the trail, looked back at the disgruntled ghost. Wiping the sweat off of his forehead again, Zeferin yelled out over his shoulder, "Come on, or we'll leave you behind!" Grumbling in a low, muttering voice, Charon float over to catch back up with the two, a sour look overtook in entire face.

As the four trekked onward, Zeferin could see the tunnel that Dee had been talking about. The tunnel was tall and wide enough to fit a double-lane road in it so that even the largest of semis could fit in without any worries of scrapping the top. The wall of the tunnel were a dull grey, yet certain spots glistened in the sunlight as the light hit the bits of volcanic glass that plated the walls. Just before the tunnel, though, mounts and mounts of rocks and pebbles littered the ground, as if the builder of the tunnel just took the excavated rock and threw it outside and left it where ever it laid.

The mounts were all different colors and sizes, from small, dull blue ones to giant, solid black ones, but one thing that all of the mounts had in common were the holes that were dug into them where wild pokemon had tunneled to make dens and burrows. Zeferin could even hear some of the mounts shift and saw some pebbles shift as somethings stirred within their lairs.

Stepping up to the entrance of the tunnel, Zeferin turned to Dee and asked, "So, straight on through this tunnel, right?"

Zeferin was dreading the long trek ahead of us. Even though he was trying his best to hide it, I could tell that he was not looking forward to what lie ahead. I wasn’t particularly fun of the mission that we were on either. I too was trying my best to conceal my abhorrence, but I wondered if I was also failing to hide my true feeling. Nonetheless, I kept as best a face as I could as we headed towards the dark tunnel ahead of us.

This long tunnel was just the beginning of a long, hot journey through the volcano island. Hopefully, when we finally do get to the source of the extreme heat, things would cool down a bit. It wasn’t until we got into the dark, leaky tunnel that I realized how much I’d been sweating. After commanding Luxray to use Flash, I pulled out two bottles of water: one for myself and one for Zeferin.

“Here, want one?” I asked Zeferin, holding out the bottle of cool water. “We should take a break here.”

As I offered Zeferin the bottle of water, the ground started to shake. I wondered what it was. Then, I saw what was happening. A Donphan rolled around the curb at a high speed. I wasn’t sure if it was aiming at us or not because it rolled right past us, barely missing us. Then, the large elephant Pokémon turned around and started to roll towards us again.

“Quick,” I said to Zeferin. “Do you want Donphan or not?”

Zeferin would have to act quickly if he wanted to get a head start on the battle. Donphan was coming at an immense speed. There would barely be any time to do anything.

As Dee led the way, Luxray lighting the path with a strong burst of light from his flash, Zeferin had mixed feelings about the cave. Yes, being out of the sun and the radiating heat was nice, but to have that replaced with a dark, damp, humid cave was in its own way just as worst.

Watching Dee take out two water bottles, Zeferin reached out and took one as the ranger said, “Here, want one?” We should take a break here.”

"No argument from me," said Zeferin as finished gulping down half the bottle in go. Just as he was about to sit down on the moist cavern floor, the ground started to rumble. It started off softly, so small that one could miss it if they weren't paying attention, but rapidly shook harder until it felt like a Mac Truck was rolling by at high speeds. Looking up just in time to see a soot colored wheel speed between Dee and himself, Zeferin jumped back to his feet to see the rotating wheel that had only just missed its target turn back around and started right back, this time on a collision course. Zeferin heard Dee yell out that it was a Donphan, but Zeferin didn't really care what it was, only that it was time to stop it.

With no time for anything fancy, Zeferin yelled out to Charon in a muttered slur, "IceBeam!"

Charon, having seen this pokemon trying to upstage him in tormenting others, was in no way about to let it come back for an encore performance before he could show everyone his act. Doing as Zeferin said, Charon plunged forward, his right hand lagging back as it gathered a blue aura around it. Then, just as the spinning Donphan was just in front of him, Charon shot is right hand forward, shooting out a powerful Ice Beam at his foe. Only, instead of aiming at the Donphan, Charon did what he thought would show everyone who the true master of mayhem was: he shot the beam of pure ice at the ground, not only cover it with the ice from his attack, but also freezing over all the water and moister that the cave already had. Soon, the entire floor in front of the high speed pokemon was coated in ice, and there was no time to turn around. Charon sat back, became intangible, and sank into the icy cavern floor, chuckling to himself as the chaos was about to unfold.

    vs. Donphan BP1

When Donphan came rolling towards us again, Zeferin ordered his Dusknoir to use Ice Beam on the Pokémon. Since Donphan was a ground type Pokémon, Ice Beam would be a great choice. Dusknoir stuck out his hand and fired a large stream of ice towards the Donphan. However, instead of aiming directly at the Pokémon, Dusknoir aimed underneath it. Then, he phased out of view to watch from a distance. It was almost as if he was trying to wreak havoc while following his trainer’s orders.

Donphan was going too fast to change directions on the pitch, so it had no choice but to continue in the direction it was going. Besides, it was probably moving too fast to notice any immediate changes in the terrain anyways. I could imagine what would happen after Donphan rolled over the ice, and I knew that it wouldn’t be pretty.

After Donphan hit the icy ground underneath it, the Pokémon spun out of control. It twisted a bit and started to head straight for us. I immediately sprung into action. I quickly pulled a Pokeball from my pocket and threw it into the air.

“Umbreon, give us a hand!” The Pokémon came out of his Pokeball with a cry. I then turned towards Luxray, who was already out of her Pokeball. “I want you and Umbreon to use Protect.”

The two Pokémon nodded and started to glow. A faint blue bubble surrounded the two Pokémon, Zeferin and me. Donphan crashed into the bubble shield and immediately bounced back into the direction that Dusknoir was in. I sighed after being able to reverse what could have been a bad situation.

Donphan was now on course towards Dusknoir. I didn’t have to worry about us being harmed, however. By having both Luxray and Umbreon use Protect, I was able to reduce the strain. The shield should last for the rest of the battle.

Flinching behind the last minute barrier, Zeferin watched as the Donphan careened into the force field and bounced back towards Charon. Zeferin quickly shook his head, taking a deep breath as he cleared his head, and shot back in full alert, ready to take this battle serious.

He was already in a soured mood from the heat, but then to have Charon twist his command around that put him into the path of the high speed bowling ball that was Donphan, Zeferin was ticked off. In a icy, cutting voice, Zeferin called out to Charon, "Charon. Calm down and use Ice Beam again, but this time, hit the Donphan, or else I won't let you torment anyone for a week."

Charon, who had only just calmed down from his laughing fit he had over Donphan spinning out of control, only to be shot back from a Protect, heard Zeferin and sobered up fast. He had been with Zeferin long enough to know that when he had the tone of voice, he meant what he said. Last time Charon hadn't done as Zeferin said, Zeferin had kept him in his pokeball for a week, only letting him out to eat and stretch.

Not wanting to be stuffed inside a boring Pokeball, Charon calmed his mind, closing his one eye as the speeding Donphan neared. Then, just before the Donphan hit, Charon fazed out again, and reappeared behind Donphan. As the irritated Elephant pokemon turned around for another go around, Charon reared back his hand, filling the dim cavern with a pale blue light. Throwing his hand out like a pitchers, Charon blasted the arctic beam at Donphan, this time, aimed right at the Pokemon.

Zeferin, from behind the shield from Protect, smirked. Charon, on one of his rare occasions, did as Zeferin had asked. Even more, Zeferin saw that Charon even managed to still pull a fast one over Donphan, for when he had fazed back in, he had reappeared across the sheet of ice that had covered the floor, putting a nice little obstacle for Donphan to cross.

    vs. Donphan BP2

"Charon. Calm down and use Ice Beam again, but this time, hit the Donphan, or else I won't let you torment anyone for a week,” The trainer next to me said.

For some reason, the statement was a bit unnerving. While the statement may have proven successfully in convincing Dusknoir to be compliant with the trainer’s orders, granting the Pokémon permission to torment others in return for such cooperation hardly seemed like the right incentive. Nonetheless, Dusknoir did as his trainer had asked and readied himself to use Ice Beam against his opponent.

Just as he did last time, the Pokémon extended one of his arms with his hand flat as if they were pressed against a wall. Then, small blue particles of ice started to form and seemed to be absorbed within the Pokémon’s hand. However, this time, after waiting a bit before releasing his attack, Dusknoir phased out at the last second, causing Donphan to miss him by very little.

The irritated Donphan, after missing Dusknoir, had no choice but to continue forward for a bit. However, after losing enough momentum to be able to change directions, Donphan turned back around and headed straight towards Dusknoir. It wasn’t long until I realized that the medium-sized ice puddle that I saw from before was still there.

After a bit of charging, Dusknoir fired a large blue stream towards Donphan. The beam froze up as it sped to its target. However, before the beam could hit Donphan, the Pokémon slid right across the ice puddle once more. I let out a large sigh in anticipation of what was soon to happen; however, the same situation from earlier did not repeat itself.

Instead of Donphan spinning out of control, the Pokémon was actually able to gain more momentum. When Ice Beam came into attack, Donphan seemingly broke straight through the large stream of ice and collided head-on with Dusknoir. Dusknoir immediately dropped to the ground, while Donphan was lifted into the air a bit and landed a few feet past Dusknoir. Both Pokémon were laid out on the ground in a daze.

*I meant in my last post for Charon to use Calm mind, then Ice Beam. "Charon calmed his mind"*

Charon laid on his back, his eye spinning in place and his body feeling like a bowling pin. Propping himself off the ground, he saw that the Donphan was sprawled out, looking just as disoriented as Charon was. Lifting himself back up into the air, Charon shook his head, rubbing the back of his head only to wince as he touched a knot that was forming. Looking over at the Donphan, Charon saw that he had the upper hand if he acted now. All he had to do was blast the Donphan with one Ice beam after another, freezing him over in place. After that, Charon didn't care. Charon was past the point of a few laughs or tormenting; he was itching to attack, to fight his opponent and beat him. He was in a primal fury, seeking only the thrill of the fight.

Zeferin, standing behind the shield, looked on at his Pokemon and saw a shift in him. Zeferin was puzzled at the way Charon drooped himself, when normally he held himself up proud, as to say that he was better and you were only a person to pester. His eye burned red, with a gaze so fierce that it could stop a heart. Even his breathing changed, and the only reason Zeferin noticed was from the force Charon was lifting his shoulders up and down from breathing.

Just as the Donphan gain his footing back, Charon opened his wide, grinning mouth and let out a blood curdling wail, a sound that stood hairs on end and chilled bones. This was his battle cry. As his mouth grinned a sick, grotesque smirk, Charon glared at Donphan, and just stared at him with that frightful, scary face. Then, rearing his hand back again, the familiar blue aura formed around the palm of his hand.

Donphan, though shaken by the sudden change in this ghost's matter and from the terrifying look on his face, charged in, rolling right for the ghost's grinning face. Donphan wasn't about to let that stupid grinning ghost blast him, the floor, or anything else with anymore ice.

Just as Donphan was near Charon, Charon threw up his other hand, and threw up a small Protect shield, hoping Donphan would careen into it just as he had with the other one. Donphan, though, wasn't going to fall for the same trick twice. Changing direction just before he hit the shield, Donphan back up and shot off to the side around the shield.

As he rounded the edge of the shield, Donphan charged again at Charon, but by then, Charon had formed a large collection of energy in his hand. As clouds steamed out of Charon as he panted in cool, iced over cave, he threw the ball of frozen energy right at the rolling mass in front of him.

Zeferin just stood there, partly in awe and partly in shock at the brute force Charon was releasing. It was true that Zeferin had been punishing Charon a bit by keeping him out of battles, but it was to try to get him to stop tormenting everyone with his pranks and tricks. Zeferin had almost forgotten that Charon was like a monster when it came to someone that he thought was worth his time. As he waited for the outcome, Zeferin couldn't help but feel a little sorry for that Donphan right about now.

    vs. Donphan BP3

    [[
Sorry about that. I'll just add the stats to the end of Dusknoir's stats.]]
The collision from the last set of attacks left both Dusknoir and Donphan in a state of unconsciousness. The two Pokémon remained there for a little while, before they started to wake up from the daze that they were in. Dusknoir was the first to regain consciousness.

The long playful and mischievous Pokémon was not the same lighthearted Pokémon that had tried to prank Luxray earlier. No, the Pokémon that I was now looking at had a more sinister and threatening tenor about him. It was as if Dusknoir was no longer interested in playing a joke on Donphan and was now ready to seriously do battle with the elephant-like Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Donphan hopped back to his feet. He curled back into a ball and started to roll towards Dusknoir once more, determined to finish off his attack. As he rolled, he swerved off track and turned in to attempt to hit Dusknoir from behind. Dusknoir, however, threw up a Protect shield to try and reflect Donphan once again and cause him to lose his balance. Donphan, however, saw through this attempt and turned past the protect shield.

As Donphan turned around once more, Dusknoir threw a ball of ice towards the charging Pokémon. It was a condensed version of Dusknoir’s Ice Beam attack earlier. I look over at Zeferin who seemed to be surprised by how Dusknoir was battling. Dusknoir seemed to have taken over the battle for himself. I looked back over to the battle and saw that the attack had indeed managed to hit Donphan, leaving a small frozen chunk on the Pokémon. While it had frozen about an eighth of Donphan’s body, he wasn’t fully frozen, but still came to a complete stop, leaving himself open for another attack.
