    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

The buzzing of her phone made Ivy Frost stop the grueling paperwork she had assigned herself to all morning. Happily, she set down her pen and answered.

“Frost,” she said, shaking her head so her long, red hair would be out of the way when she put the device to her ear.

“Hey, Ivy,” the voice began, then trailed off. The speaker sounded unsure of himself.

Fortunately, the Ranger recognized the voice. “Angelo, did something happen?” she asked hurriedly.

The young man was fairly new to their squad, but he had proved himself competent. He was supposed to be out on rounds in the Manor today, nothing too serious, but Ivy remembered the last incident—something had gone wrong in the Enigma Ruins and injured him.

Angelo seemed to be thinking of the same event. “No, no, nothing like that,” he said. There was a scuffling, like boots against the ground or maybe the scratching of the head. “It’s probably nothing, but—”

He cut himself off abruptly, and Ivy heard the frustrated sound he made on the other line. She waited patiently. It wasn’t the first time some of the newer people had been afraid to talk to her. The woman tried to be as open and friendly as possible, but she supposed she did have an impatient streak sometimes—especially when people were slacking at the office. One of their recurring Trainers, Chainy’s little brother Jathan, was terrified of her. It was pretty adorable. Ivy never failed to tease him.

“First instincts are usually right,” she offered in an attempt to get something out of Angelo.

He sighed. “Alright, so, I’m walking through the Manor, making sure everything’s all right, and then I stumble upon a sleeping Meowth. No big deal, right?

Angleo blew out a puff of air over the line and then continued. “But then, there’s a Mightyena in the next room, also snoozing. And a Gourgesit, a Murkrow, and a pile of Rattata. Hardly any of the Pokemon I’ve seen today have been awake.” After a brief pause, he added, “It’s probably nothing.”

Ivy was already getting up, sliding her canvas duster vest off her rolling chair and easing it onto her shoulders. “That’s pretty strange,” she told him. “I’ll come check it out—Don’t worry about it; there’s a Trainer wanting to go through,” she said, once she heard the starting of his protests. “It’s not a problem. Really.”

They said their goodbyes and the Ranger gathered her supplies. Haji, her Espeon, caught the motion and rose, stretching out his body like a cat would. She could feel the thrum of his mental power brush against her mind as he soaked up the details of what was going on—that was one benefit of having a psychic link with a Pokemon like him. She didn’t like repeating herself.

She clipped her phone and utility belt to her black cargos and brushed her hair out from the collar of her vest. Glancing at her computer screen one more time, she took note of the Trainer’s name, Steven Eight, and closed the file. As much as she lamented leaving work unfinished, she hated paperwork, and she jumped at the chance to get back out into the field—the paperwork had lasted a few weeks. It could wait a little longer.

When everything was set, Haji jumped down from the couch. Ivy knelt beside him as the purple cat’s energy flexed and pulled. For a moment, there was nothing, and then they were standing on the dirt road by the Meteor Valley outpost. Ivy shook off the after effects of teleporting. It had always disoriented her. She liked both feet on the ground, thanks.

The duo took refuge on the bench up against the outpost wall—in the shade, thankfully. It was starting to get hot out. That would change, once they were in the Manor. She hoped that the red of her vest would be enough to let the Trainer see her. Some had not noticed she was here before.

But the main outpost would tell the Trainer to come here, to Meteor Valley. They didn’t have an outpost built at the Ruins yet, and since the Manor was deep in the woods of the Valley, they didn’t let Trainers just wander around. Once the outpost was up, they would work on paving a road if they could. If it disrupted too many Pokemon, they’d have to figure something else out.

As she sat back, Ivy folded her arms and closed her eyes. Haji jumped up next to her and rested his head on her lap. She tried not to think too hard, but her mind wandered back to the phone call. Ever since becoming a Ranger, she had learned to pay attention. Something small that seemed like nothing could be a really big something.

Her hand curled into a fist on reflex. Like when the poachers had broken into the Park and attempted to steal a whole swarm of Dwebble. The sleeping thing was odd, and she couldn’t rule out foul play.

With her mind buzzing, she settled in to wait for the Trainer.

Steven walks up to the Meteor Valley outpost and glances at the surrounding areas. "So, this is how one gets to the Ruined Manor? Should be closer than this...," he mutters to himself, after spotting the Manor in the distance. Steven then notices Snowdance (The Eevee) running towards the Outpost wall. His eyes immediately follow the Eevee's trajectory to... A trainer. Seemingly a Ranger judging from the red outfit. Steven also notices a Espeon on the Ranger's lap. "So, you're the Ranger assigned to me? Huh. How come the Outpost is this far away from the Manor? Oh whatever! I'm Steven Eight. You are?"

    Ranger Ivy Frost

    ---

A fleck of Haji’s awareness flashed across her mind, making her more alert. He mentally told her that someone was coming, and that made Ivy sit up a little straighter.

Not long after that, a tiny brown Eevee came dashing down the path, followed by an extremely tall Trainer with a dark hoodie. Ivy was a little above average for women, but she could already tell this young man would loom over her.

Haji jumped down off the bench as the Eevee ran up, so he indulged by entertaining his pre-evolution while Ivy greeted the Trainer.

“So you’re the Ranger assigned to me? Huh. How come the Outpost is this far away from the Manor?” He then introduced himself as Steven Eight.

“I’m Ivy, and this is Haji,” the Ranger responded, holding out a hand to shake. Introductions made, she answered his first question as she motioned for him to follow her, taking them down the path into the Valley before veering off into the trees.

“Well, the Manor was only put into operation pretty recently, so it doesn’t actually have a real outpost yet. If it doesn’t bother the wild Pokemon, we’ll start constructing one when we have the manpower. Here it is,” she added, once they had been trudging through the underbrush for a short time. She held a branch back so the Trainer could come into the clearing without hitting his face.

The Manor itself looked like one of the old-style houses of the rich on the mainland, only it had fallen into severe disrepair over the years. The strange thing was that Rangers had mapped out the island prior to this, and the Ruined Manor hadn’t been there. Then, suddenly, it came up on their scanners like it had been there forever. And it must’ve been, since in the few days they knew it existed, the place couldn’t have rotted this much.

It was strange, but they didn’t have all the answers yet. And now weird things were happening there. Ivy could not claim that her job was boring.

With another gesture, they started toward the old house. The windows were boarded up—although some planks were missing, revealing the inky darkness inside. The walls, too, were chipped and flaked from age. From what Ivy knew, it had once been a dwelling for someone—many sometimes, judging by all the rooms inside—but there was no record of who.

They carefully ascended the steps, which creaked loudly in protest as they handled the group’s weight. In front, there was a porch that wrapped around most of the Manor, held up by pillars and an overhang. There wasn’t much around the sides of the mansion until they hit the back, so Ivy opted to lead them through the center.

The first door opened with a groan, but at least the latch still caught. Inside was a small entryway that had a closet and an old bench probably used for guests to take off their shoes. What was more was the servants’ pathways connected here too. They ran parallel to the deck outside and found that there were hidden pathways all over the Manor.

But the servant walkways were kinda small for Pokemon, so she instead touched the knob to the main area. Ivy turned to look over her shoulder at the Trainer, beginning to ask a question. “What—”

Before she could fully ask, a low, threatening sound came from above. Looking up, she found that a small brown sparrow was watching them with an unpleasant look on its face, resting on one of the support beams that had been uncovered in the rot. It flapped its pink-tinged wings and the feathers around its neck stood up. Ivy tried to be still.

“Spearow often get territorial. It might leave us alone if we continue onward, but it might not. Of course, if this Pokemon is something you’re interested in, you’re welcome to try to catch it too,” she added.

This Pokemon was awake at least. Whatever Angelo had seen hadn’t caught up with them yet. Ivy looked around, but the entryway wasn’t very big. If Steven wanted to fight, they would probably have to lure the bird outside. At close range, the bird would have a clear advantage—and she had seen some horror flicks where birds were the foes. It wasn’t pretty.
