"Welcome, Taither! Since you are now an official ranger, are you ready for your first assignment?"

Were the words that James Carter, one of the Elite Rangers and also the one who administered my test, asked me only a day after my license was issued. Eager to get to work, I accepted before he could even tell me where I was going. Not that it mattered, I took the liberty to study all the maps of the National Park I could get my hands on. I felt confident that no matter which area I was sent to, I could bring a trainer through and return safely. Hopefully.

"You'll be taking a trainer named Sorm through the Meteor Valley. You're to meet him tomorrow morning at Outpost #8. Good luck, young Padawan."

I never could understand James' outlandish nicknames, so I learned quickly to shrug them off as early schizophrenia. With the file associated with my assignment in hand, I finished up some last minute packing for the trip; extra Pokedolls, some rope, a flashlight, a flare gun, and a first aid kit. Anything else, my partner Pokemon could handle without the need of tools. Once that was finished, I looked over the assignment until I fell asleep.

The trainer was supposed to meet me the next morning, which I actually showed up early for. The trainer wasn't there yet, so I kept myself busy in the outpost, going over the map of the area once more. By the time I skimmed over the map, making mental notes of specific areas that might be interesting to explore, the trainer came into sight coming up the path. Grabbing my pack sitting on the desk, I exit the outpost and walk down the path to meet the trainer Sorm.

"Hello! Welcome to the National Park!"

I called out to the trainer as he came into better focus, waving my arm in the air to grab his attention. A smile crept across my face as I psyched myself up for the trip through the Meteor Valley zone, which I knew would be an exciting experience for this novice trainer.

This is my first go at this so this is very much a learning experience for me. So feel free to let me know if I do something completely stupid. ^_^
    @Taither;

Sorm was excited to finally be able to make a trip through the renown National Park. Ever since he had become a trainer all those years ago he had wanted to come here and at least see some of the native Pokemon of the area. Now that chance would come.

He had prepared the previous day, purchasing some of the special parkballs he would need to use here and reading up on some of the areas the park had to offer. He had chosen to explore the Meteor Valley area of the park on the first of what he hoped would be many future trips. Everything had been set up and his entry was paid. Now all he had to do was meet up with his designated Ranger at place called Outpost #8.

Before long the trainer found himself coming up on the building where he would meet the ranger. And sure enough there he was already waiting for him. Waving to him infact.

“Hello! Welcome to the National Park!” he heard the ranger call out to him.

“Hello to you too,” Sorm called out, waving back as he closed the gap between them.

“My name is Sorm,” the trainer said with a smile, extending his arm for a handshake. “This is my first time here. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Hello to you too,” The trainer called out, while hurrying up closer to the outpost.

“My name is Sorm,” the trainer said with a smile, extending his arm for a handshake. “This is my first time here. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

"Nice to meet you too. I'm Ranger Taither, I'll be bringing you through Meteor Valley today." I said to the novice trainer, gripping his hand and giving him a firm handshake. He looked about my age, albeit just slightly shorter. He seemed to have a few battles under his belt, but relatively new at the whole concept. Letting my bag slip a little from my shoulder and letting it rest on the ground next to me, I start explaining the park to Sorm.

"Well, I'm not sure if you were briefed on a few things, so I'll go over them." Taking in a small breath, I continue. "You can catch any Pokemon you want while in the park that your stock of Parkballs allow. Be aware, though, that you can only take three of them home with you. The rest I will have to return to the wild. Also, please try to preserve the ecosystems you will be entering. If you destroy the fauna or ruin the area in any way, I'll have to strike you. Gain enough strikes, and I will be forced to remove you from the park." Noticing that the trainer was losing interest, and paying more attention to the surroundings than my ramblings, I decide to conclude with that and begin our journey.

"Alright, shall we?" I say, picking up my bag and taking the lead down a path down into the valley. I was confident that this path would lead to one of two places, both of which this trainer might like to explore, given his comments written into his application. After a few minutes, I decided to check on the trainer, looking back to make sure he was still following. His gaze was moving all over, checking out the sights to be seen in this particular area of the park. There were bleached-white cliffs above the treetops, which looked to shine in the sunlight. Mysterious and exotic fauna littered the treelines on either side of us; some beautiful and some looking as if they would grab and swallow you whole. The trainer was keeping up very well, considering the many distractions, besides the chance of catching rare Pokemon.

After a few minutes following this path, we reached a split. One path I knew lead to the lake situated in the northern portion of the valley. The other lead to a bridge between two cliffs, where many caves were located. Sorm would love to go into the caves, but may be interested in the lake where many Pokemon are known to gather for a refreshing drink. Before I could bring this up to the trainer, the bushes around us began to rustle. Immediately, I went to the side of Sorm and pointed to the bushes.

"There, something has found us first." Almost as if it understood me, a Poochyena jumped out of some nearby foliage, hopping up and down and growling. It looked like it was interested in us, but I wasn't sure in which way. Turning to the trainer, I decided to ask him about it.

"This little guy seems to like us. Care to battle it?"

Sorm was happy to see that the Ranger was around his age and not someone considerably older or younger. He was much more comfortable having someone he could likely talk to easily leading him though the park as opposed to someone who would either seem like an old teacher or someone young enough to have a bed time.

The Meteor Valley had much more pleasing scenery than the trainer had imagined. Rather quickly he decided he would like to come back here sometime in the future, after he had visited the rest of the park. He was so caught up in the scenery that he didn’t even notice the rustling bush until Taither had point it out to him.

“Hey there little guy,” Sorm said bending down as the Poochyena popped out and walked towards them.

A bit of a smile spread of Sorm’s face as he saw the young Poochyena. Immediately he was reminded of when he Mightyena had been about that big and for a moment he thought about trying to catch the little guy, but he wasn’t one to take the motto “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” to mean “Catch all of one Pokemon”.

“I think I will let this one go on about its business,” the trainer said, standing back up and turning to the ranger beside him. “Heh, after all, my Mightyena might get jealous if I bring another one home with me.”

“I think I will let this one go on about its business,” the trainer said, standing back up and turning to me. “Heh, after all, my Mightyena might get jealous if I bring another one home with me.”

I couldn't argue with that logic, as I prefer not to catch multiples of the same Pokemon, either. With that, I waved Sorm over and pointed at a small dead branch that must have snapped off a nearby tree.

"Why not throw that for him and bolt when he goes after it?" I asked the trainer, since the Poochyena seemed to be in the mood to follow us if we just try to walk away from it. Nodding, Sorm bent over and picked up the branch, wiggling it in his hand to try and grab the small dog Pokemons' attention. After standing up straight, the trainer wound up his arm and launched the stick down the path, skidding across the dirt as it dropped in trajectory. Any normal dog, and some dog-like Pokemon, would have took off after the new toy. This little guy, though, looked as if he was insulted at the act. Letting out a growl, the small Pokemon started running circles around us, definitely not in the mood to be taken lightly.

"Uhmm.. I think your best bet is to battle it. I brought a few Pokedolls with me in case of emergency that you can buy, but my supply is limited." I told to the trainer, remembering that in my emergency kit I had packed a few dolls. I thought we would use them for an emergency or dangerous situation, but this little guy won't let us leave without a fight.

    @Taither;

The stick Sorm threw seemed to anger the little pup rather than trick it into playing a game of fetch without someone that wouldn’t be there when he came back. In a way Sorm preferred it that way. At least now the little Pokemon wouldn’t end up feeling unwanted and sad by trying to return a stick to nobody. Now he would have to try to scare the Pokemon off with one of his own.

Espeon was far too shy and unintimidating to be able to scare this little guy off. If it could the little Poochyena would probably laugh at Espeon’s feeble attempts to be scary. Mightyena on the other hand was naturally rather intimidating and could probably pull of a few techniques that might make the un-evolved version of it think twice before trying anything funny.

“Looks like he is a bit of a scrapper,” Sorm said with a smile after thinking about the situation for a moment as he reaching for one of the pokeballs attached to his belt. “Maybe a bigger dog can convince the little guy to move on about his day. Come on out Mightyena.”

With a flick of his wrist the trainer tossed out the ball containing his loyal Mightyena. With a slight reddish glow the ball opened and the energy contained inside coalesced into the form of a large black and grey dog. With a somewhat intimidating growl the Mightyena was released.

“Alright girl, it seems this little pooch won’t let us get on our way,” Sorm said, patting his dog-like Pokemon on the head. “Why don’t you go over there and see if you scare it off with one of your mighty Roar attacks.”

With a slight nod a bark of approval the Mightyena jumped out in front of the scappy smaller dog and took in a deep breath in preparation of its roar.

You're probably going to have to buy a Pokedoll from me, or battle it. Roar and the like is instant fail in park.

    BP#1

With the reaction the Poochyena has towards Sorms failed fetching trick, the trainer decided to call out a Pokemon of his own; Mightyena. I was surprised at the choice, but I could understand it if he was thinking of befriending the smaller Pokemon. Maybe the trainers Mightyena could convince the younger to join up without a fight? The trainer gripped a Pokeball that was attached to his belt, tossing it onto the ground a few feet from his position. The ball cracked open horizontally, releasing a white blob of light that quickly formed the shape of his Pokemon.

“Alright girl, it seems this little pooch won’t let us get on our way,” Sorm said, as his Pokemon finished taking form from the light that gushed from the small metallic orb the trainer had released.

“Why don’t you go over there and see if you scare it off with one of your mighty Roar attacks.” He continued, trying to come up with a way to evade a battle. The large black beast took in a deep breath, getting ready for a fierce roar. The Poochyena stopped for a moment, seemingly confused at the action and surprised to see an evolved form of its own species just pop out of nowhere in front of it. The wild Pokemon in the park rarely got to see trainers, and some of the newly hatched ones have little to no experience with them. This one seemed to be the latter, seeing as it was completely naive to what was happening.

Sorms Mightyena leaned forward, taking a wider stance so that it wouldn't knock itself back from the reverberations from the Roar. It let out a loud howl-like sound, which seemed to echo on forever. Sadly, the Poochyena just stood there, tilting its head to the side in a state of bewilderment. It wasn't sure what was going on, or why this stranger suddenly popped up in its territory and howled at it. It decided to do the same thing back, letting out a few barks and howls at the trainers Mightyena, who seemed to not know what to do now, and looked back at its trainer as if asking, 'What's going on?'.

Unfortunately for Sorm, the Poochyena bolted at the larger Pokemon, showing its courage and smacking its' paw into Mightyena's cheek, sucker punching the trainers unaware Pokemon before anyone could react. The Mightyena stumbled for a brief moment, but seemed to take a small amount of damage from the surprise attack. Looks like this little guy had more guts than we both thought. I just hoped the trainer was ready for a battle if he didn't choose other options to get away before angering the Poochyena more.

    Pokedoll
    $8,500 - $500 = $8,000

The little Poochyena just kind of cocked his head and looked confused as Mightyena let out it’s roar. Even Mightyena wasn’t sure what exactly was going on. Even Sorm was a bit taken aback at the turn of events when the little pup barked back and smacked Mightyena in the face.

“Pokemon here in the park are certain a bit more courageous than wild ones elsewhere in the world,” Sorm said, turning to the ranger. “I think you mentioned something about Pokedolls? I would hate to tire Mightyena out with a battle this early on in our tour of Meteor Valley.”

“Pokemon here in the park are certain a bit more courageous than wild ones elsewhere in the world,” Sorm said, turning to me. “I think you mentioned something about Pokedolls? I would hate to tire Mightyena out with a battle this early on in our tour of Meteor Valley.”

I nodded, taking my pack from my shoulder and opening it up. Rustling through the different pockets inside, I finally grip a soft, fuzzy blob that molds around my fingers with my squeeze. Pulling it from the bag, I toss it to the trainer. Sorm in turn waves it at the Poochyena, who instantly turns its attention to the stuffed doll. The trainer then tosses the plush to the wild Pokemon, who pounces on it and starts rolling around in the dirt while gnawing on it playfully. Sorm returned to me and handed over a small amount of money for the doll, which I then put in a pouch to be handed over to the ranger HQ at the end of the run. This money would fund the preservation of the park and anything the park might need to function.

"Too cute." I say, smiling at the little bugger. "Well, shall we continue?" Turning to Sorm, who was sighing in relief that the Poochyena was out of his hair. We hurried on our way, before the wild dog lost interest in its new plaything, getting quite a ways away before hitting another decision; To head towards the cliffs, or to the lake, which I didn't hesitate to ask the trainer.

"We can head towards the lake in the northern part of the valley, or head towards the cliffs and tunnels. I'm pretty sure we'll find interesting things both ways, but it's up to you." I say, pointing down either path in front of us.

    @Taither;

OOC: Sorry about the wait. Technical difficulties on my end.

Sorm watched the pup play around with its new toy. He had never quite understood how these Pokedolls worked but they seemed to be able to unerringly distract Pokemon. He assumed that perhaps along with the stuffing inside there was probably something akin to catnip except for Pokemon. But that was a mystery for another time.

"We can head towards the lake in the northern part of the valley, or head towards the cliffs and tunnels. I'm pretty sure we'll find interesting things both ways, but it's up to you,” Sorm heard the ranger say.

The trainer thought it over for a second. Both options seemed enticing. On the one hand there was what would likely be a beautiful lake, probably unlike one he had ever seen outside of this well-kept park. On the other hand there were cliffs and tunnels that would also likely be a sight to behold, not to mention well worth exploration. After some mental deliberation Sorm decided that, worst case scenario he could always come back to visit the lake. Surely it wasn’t going anywhere.

“I think I would like to head towards the cliff and tunnels if that is alright,” the trainer finally said to Taither. “Though I am sure the lake is quite the sight to see, I imagine it will be there another time.”

“I think I would like to head towards the cliff and tunnels if that is alright,” the trainer told me. “Though I am sure the lake is quite the sight to see, I imagine it will be there another time.”

The lake was definitely a sight, and I was hoping to see it up close. The only time I got to see it was from a helicopter ride over every area of the park. It was definitely worth a trip, but so were the caves for different reasons. The lake was a work of art, and the surrounding area was amazingly beautiful. Many Pokemon went to the lake for a drink and to splash around in, so it was worth a visit at any point. The caves were a great experience in their own right, being where many Pokemon hide out and make their homes, ontop of the rumors that ghosts haunt the tunnels, told to be adventurers trapped by fallen rocks and the like. Most likely, though, they were just Ghost-types that like to play pranks on passersby.

"Sounds good to me, I'm sure we'll have some wild experiences there." I smirked, thinking about the possibility of one of the rare ghost-types scaring the novice trainer. Starting down the path, the terrain went from a heavily forested area to a more rocky one, with boulders starting to litter the treelines and the cliffs starting to rise from the ground around us. The sun was barely above the treetops by the time the path started winding up the bleached white cliffs, which were getting steeper and taller with every step we took. A bridge spanning from the cliff we were currently navigating to the adjacent one came into view, and a few cave openings could be seen in the side of the other cliff face. Our own path still had a few turns left before we got to the bridge, so I wasn't too enthused in the sight just yet.

Nearing the next curve in the path, a small figure popped out from behind the cliff face directly in front of us. Sorm didn't seem to notice just yet, but as we got closer, it came into better focus. Its' body was covered in ridges of what looked like steel, and the rest of its body was black with red stripes. An axe like horn protruded from its' dome-shaped head, while its' hands were sharp blades with no fingers. With only a small glance I knew exactly what it was; a Pawniard. they were quite rare to see out on the cliff paths, and just as rare to find in the forests. They usually fed off fruits and vegetables that their blades helped with obtaining and preparing. I knew the trainer would be interested in this Pokemon.

"Look there! You're in luck. There's a Pawniard wandering around up the path. Interested?" I said to him, trying not to draw the small Pokemons' attention until Sorm wanted it.

"Look there! You're in luck. There's a Pawniard wandering around up the path. Interested?", Sorm heard the ranger say.

There in front of them was a small Pokemon that Sorm had never seen in person before. However, he had read enough about Pawniards to know they were not a common sight in the world. This was it, the first rare Pokemon the trainer was going to see in the park. He certainly hoped it wouldn’t be the last.

The small Pokemon seemed to have blades protruding from its body at various points. It had one blade on the top of its head, which almost looked like a helmet itself. Both of its arms seemed to end in knives instead of a normal hand. Sorm had to wonder how dexterous a Pokemon like that would be, but in his time as a trainer he knew not to underestimate a Pokemon that seemed to have a physical disadvantage like no thumbs. Beyond that its torso seemed to be lined with blades which seemed to be connected from one side to the other with a metal rib-like feature. Even the two toes on each of the Pawniard’s feet seemed like they might be sharp and metal. All of which gave away its steel typing.

In addition to all of that it had a very black body with red accents, and its eyes seemed to almost glow in a dark yellow hue. The visual effects certainly gave the feel that one would not want to meet this Pokemon in a dark alley late at night. That was a trait that often applied to Pokemon of the dark typing.

“I definitely am interested,” Sorm replied to the trainer, still watching the Pawniard. “I don’t want to disturb him quite yet though. I am sure he will notice us soon. It might be fun to watch it for a bit and maybe see what kind of mood it is in.”

With that the trainer took a couple careful steps towards the rare Pokemon, trying not to scare it off or seem as though he was being aggressive. Once he was in a better viewing position he knelt down to get a better look at the little guy.

“Pokemon are so diverse in form and function. It is fascinating to see how they use their unique features to carry out everyday life,” Sorm whispered back to Taither. “Heh at least that is what my hometown professor says. Though, seeing a Pokemon like this up close, I can’t say I disagree with him.”

This species wasn't known to be overly aggressive without reasonable justification, but it was still a smart move. Surprising it might lead to a few nasty cuts from the razer-sharp edges covering the creatures body.

“Pokemon are so diverse in form and function. It is fascinating to see how they use their unique features to carry out everyday life,” Sorm whispered to me “Heh at least that is what my hometown professor says. Though, seeing a Pokemon like this up close, I can’t say I disagree with him.” Which I agreed. Pokemon were indeed very interesting, especially how they are do diverse yet live with other Pokemon species in common areas. They were definitely a secret of the world around us, which might not ever be revealed. I was happy just training my Pokemon and enjoying their friendship, but there were definitely some things I would not mind having answers to.

"They definitely are a mystery." In response to Sorm, but also adding in "So, do you want to battle it, or befriend it? Seems he's curious about you." Pointing to the Pawniard, who was now right up next to Sorm, who had his head turned towards me. The small Dark-Steel type looked like it was sniffing the Trainer to identify him, while circling around the trainer. He was definitely a curious little thing, which wasn't too uncommon in the park, seeing as many of the inhabitants have had very little exposure to people, let alone trainers. It might be worthwhile to befriend the little Pokemon, but it would take most of Sorms time here to convince it to join up with him.

    Male for the gender.
    @Taither;

Sorm turned to see the little Pokemon now up next to him and seeming to investigate the trainer. He smiled as he watched the little guy in his curiosity. Sorm could only imagine what was going through the intelligent creature’s head. After all, Pokemon were for the most part at least as intelligent as humans. Some cultures even believe that all Pokemon and humans were once the same species. While the trainer wasn’t sure he believed that this Pawniard could be his distant cousin, there was no denying that it was self-aware and capable of intelligent thought.

“So what do you think, Pawniard?” the trainer asked with a bit of a laugh, slowly reaching his hand towards the small, curious Pokemon. “Do I seem friendly enough?”

It didn’t cross Sorm’s mind at first that he was effectively reaching towards the blade of a knife with his bare hand hoping it didn’t see him as a threat and cut him. By the time the mental image of a scared Pawniard stabbing at his hand occurred to him he was far too into his friendly gesture to pull back without seeming rude. Sorm kept a gentle smile on his face while he silently hoped that the Pawniard didn’t lop of one of his fingers either by accident or because of anger.

Maybe if he isn’t scared by me it will be like a Ponyta, the trainer thought to himself. People can touch their flaming manes without being burned. Maybe someone can shake hands with a Pawniard without getting cut too.

Sorry for the late post, been really busy. Make it up to you? D:

Sormeki walked up to the small dark/steel type with caution, trying not to spook it into swiping at him or run away. The Pawniard didn't seem to notice him right away, and just kept going about its merry way. It seemed docile enough, but I'm not sure Sormeki knows how to handle wild Pokemon in this type of environment, considering his relatively new trainer status. Once he was close enough, the trainer dropped to a knee and softly spoke out, trying to get the Pokemons attention.

“So what do you think, Pawniard?” the trainer asked, his hand reaching to touch the metallic Pokemon. “Do I seem friendly enough?” The Pawniard looked up at him, somewhat intimidated by this creature that snuck up on him. He looked up and down Sormekis body, sizing him up. The wild creature then began to sniff him, almost immediately smelling other Pokemon on him, apparently. The small Pokemon jumped back, throwing its' bladed hands up in front of it, ready to defend itself. It took a few vicious slices at the air to try and get Sormeki to back off, which startled the trainer and made him fall backwards. Rushing to help him up, I mentioned to him about the attitude of Pokemon in the park.

"Wild Pokemon here can be territorial, especially if you have Pokemon on your team that aren't from this area. Befriending is not something any novice can do." I said, pulling him to his feet. He dusted himself off while I continued. "You're going to have to fight it, he's definitely not going to let you go anytime soon."

With that, I stepped back a ways, watching intently for Sormeki's next move.
