I yawned as I leaned back on my chair. There was nothing to do here at the Meteor Valley Outpost. Buzz was off being an asshole somewhere, so I didn't have anyone to pick fights with. Leo was probably off getting yelled at by Boss-sama, and Ivy had taken a couple days off. There were rumours floating around that she'd gone to a wedding, and I knew if she had she wouldn't have taken a date. The thought of Ivy being at a social event being hit on by platoons of random men raised my hackles, but I stilled them with sheer force of will. If Ivy knew about that she'd make my life hell, and probably flirt with a couple of guys just to annoy me.

I pushed it all out of my mind. What I needed was a fresh wind, something that could rescue me from boredom and worries, take my mind off the world as it was for a bit.

My messenger service on my PDA beeped, and just that like, my silent prayers were answered. Apparently Dee had been let out of the Archives for once, and he had decided to come up here for a run. A huge grin split my face - it'd been ages since I hung out with Dee. We'd both become Rangers at the same time, but he often went dark, working in the back-rooms.

I quickly grabbed the three essential "P"s - pack, PokeBalls, pistol - and strapped them in before running out the Outpost to the large wrought-iron gate that denied access to trespassers. I groped around on the bottom bar, locating the secret hidden button. I pressed it in and took a few steps back quickly, dodging out of the way of the gate which swung inwards silently. I stood there, at the entrance to the Meteor Valley, with a stupid grin on my face, waiting for my old friend.

Things had been hectic, lately. I had been up to my face in paperwork. I didn't have much time on my hands. And worse of all, I'd been stuck inside of a building for only God knows how long. So, it came to no surprise that the first thing I did when I had managed to clear everything was to go out to the Park to catch some fresh air, almost die, and catch some Pokemon. Yep, I thought. It'll be just like old times.

Most trainers who came to the Park either took a boat to the location that they were going to explore or took the convenient teleporters near the Front Gate. However, I'd never forgotten how to get to Meteor Valley. It's not like I'd been there before, but I still knew how to get there from the intense map-studying that I did while I was training to become a Ranger. The Valley was actually the simplest place to go to. Just keep straight until you see the sign. I climbed aboard my Dragonite's back, and we flew to the Meteor Valley.

As I approached the Valley, I saw a man standing near the gate. As we landed there, it became more and more clear to me that it was Jathan waiting for me. Dragonite landed with a "thud!" I hopped off, recalled Dragonite, and turned around to see my friend and current ranger, Jathan, standing there.

"Jathan!" I said with some enthusiasm. "It's been a long time, man! How are you!?"

A shadow blotted out the early morning sun temporarily, and I looked up, shading my eyes. The easily recognisable shape of a Dragonite was winging its way here, and since there were no other scheduled expeditions today I knew it had to be Dee. I jumped from one foot to the other, waiting for him to land. The Dragonite slowly descended, and it landed just inside the gate with a loud thud. A man slid off of the Dragon-type's back and recalled it to its PokeBall ina single fluid motion.

"Jathan!" he called out, walking over to me. "It's been a long time, man! How are you!?"

I clasped him hand with my own and clapped him on the shoulder, happy to see him. My face took on a mock-severe expression and I jostled him by shaking his shoulder. "What is this insubordination?" I asked in a severe tone of voice. "Have you been in the back offices so long that you confuse me with my little brother? It's me, James!"

The smile returned to my face and I shook his shoulder in a friendly manner once again before letting him go. Dee had taken my little brother Jathan on his first National Park Expedition, and had also gone on a Team Run with him later, although neither of them had known it until later. Dee had rubbed off on Jathan, and by extension Dual, and when Dual had become mine he'd brought with him Jathan's memories and many of his opinions. I hadn't found his opinion of Dee to be wrong, though - the Ranger was a likeable young man who didn't use the popular Pokemon for the sake of being popular. When was the last time you saw an Umbreon, for heavens' sake?

"So are you looking for anything in particular?" I asked Dee as we walked inside and the gates swung shut noiselessly behind us. "And where do you want to go?"

Typically, Trainers chose one of three routes from the entrance to Meteor Valley. There was a path that led straight down into the chasm, where the strongest Pokemon dwelled. There was a second path that doodled its way around the outside of the Valley, where weaker Pokemon were found. Finally, there was a route to the bottom through some caves, which was a bit of a middle-ground. Dee would know this already, though, and even though I was the Ranger I decided to give the choice to him.

"What is this insubordination?" James shook my shoulder as he spoke. "Have you been in the back offices so long that you confuse me with my little brother? It's me, James!"

I laughed, but inside I was beating myself up. It was embarassing to get the two mixed up. And it was true, I'd been secluded for so long, that getting family members mixed up unknowingly had become common practice for me. However, before I could apologize, Jathan, er, James continued talking.

"So are you looking for anything in particular?" He asked. "And where do you want to go?"

I thought for a second as I released Luxray from her Pokeball. I hadn't really put much thought into what I wanted to catch. To be honest, I'd only come to Meteor Valley because, despite being a ranger for a little over a year, I'd never seen Meteor Valley before. However, I did want to see some of the newly discovered Pokemon lurking in the Valley.

"Well," I said. "To be honest, I'm not really sure. I just wanted to explore the area."

Luxray started to growl in the direction of the caves. Every once in a while, she'd have a thought of where she wanted to go. I was raring to go through the caves myself. The Pokemon there were sort of medium in difficulty. Better to ease back into battling rather than take on too much at once.

"As for where to go," I started. "I'd love to travel through the caves first."

[[OOC: lol, I forgot you created a separate character as your ranger, and that not everyone is like me and too lazy to create another character. @[email protected]]]

Dee released his Luxray from its PokeBall as he thought about my question. Most Rangers chose Psychic Pokemon as companions due to their increased usefulness, but Dee stuck with his Luxray, and I admired that. Especially because it wasn't a particularly powerful creature - it was just one he loved. Luxray started growling as she looked down the left path, which headed towards the caves.

"Well, to be honest, I'm not really sure. I just wanted to explore the area. As for where to go, I'd love to travel through the caves first," Dee said.

    "Sounds good," I replied.

I led Dee down the packed-dirt path which led to the caves. It was perhaps a five minute walk through some light scrub which was home to Pokemon like Poochyena and Purrloin. We were definitely heading down, though - the canyon walls were slowly growing, reaching over us. If you looked carefully, you could see winding trails on the walls themselves - there was a fair chance we'd end up using some of them on the cave path. The cave path changed every time, usually due to renovation or cave ins or straight-out Pokemon trickery.

I enjoyed the silent walk, taking in the serenity of Meteor Valley. I didn't get many chances to come here, which was a pity because it was one of my favourite places in the Park. It usually didn't get too hot, and most of the cooler Pokemon lived here. Dual loved coming to the Valley too - it was where the Gardevoir dwelled, and he loved him some strange.

I saw the entrance to the caves up ahead, and my pace quickened as we neared it. However, I heard a small chirping off to the right. I turned my head, and I saw a little green-and-red bird sitting on top of a pointy rock, enjoying the morning sunlight. It turned its head towards us, using a large eye to get a good look at us before cheeping a greeting.

"Feel like trying to capture a Natu?" I asked Dee.

Chainy led us down a dirt path that would lead us to the caves. As we went further down the path, we seemed to go deeper down the valley. The walls around us seemed to get higher and higher. It was breathtaking to try to see the top of the walls. The whole view was amazing, and I was enjoying every minute of it.

After about five minutes had passed, Chainy started to pick up the pace in his walking. The cave entrance must have been close. I walked a bit faster in order to keep up with him. I had finally caught view of the cave's entrance, when we heard chirping coming from the right.

Chainy and I both turned our heads to see that a Natu perched near the entrance. It was mostly green with red on the ends of its feathers. A black outline separate the green from the red. It's body was round. It reminded me of the birds on a game that I played on my cellphone. Natu must have noticed us too because it turned its head to look at us. It chirped at us happily as if to greet us.

"Feel like trying to capture a Natu?" Chainy asked.

I thought about it for a while. I didn't really want a Natu. I had next to no knowledge of how well Natu (and eventually Xatu) would fair in a battle. I supposed I could use this chance to test it. Then again, if I ever decided that I wanted a Natu, I could easily go out and capture one from somewhere else. In the end, I decided that Natu wasn't a Pokemon that I was interested in battling today.

"You know what," I replied. "I think I'll pass."

"You know what? I think I'll pass," Dee said.

I wasn't really surprised. Natu evolved into Xatu, and while their Psychic/Flying combination wasn't common, it still faced fierce competition from Swoobat and Sigilyph in the professional battling leagues. Despite this, it had some handy tricks up its sleeves - or rather feathers.

"Fair enough," I said, and I began to lead Dee and his Luxray towards the cave when a sudden brisk wind began to tug at my large black coat. I heard a furious flapping, and the Natu sailed over my head to land on the ground in front of us. It was chirping angrily, fixing one of its large eyes on Dee. It continued to tell him off as the wind suddenly changed direction, now blowing towards me instead of from behind me. I raised my arm in front of my face to ward it off as I turned me head to look at Dee.

"I think you might have accidentally insulted it," I said to him. "It looks like we're not going to get past it without a battle."

The Natu hopped up and down, nodding furiously as it did so. The human had insulted its battle capabilities, and that would not stand. It stared down the big blue Luxray, prepared to utilize every trick in its arsenal to send the Electric-type running.

Chainy and I continued towards the cave. At least, that's what we planned to do. We had gone very far when suddenly the wind, which had been softly blowing behind us, suddenly changed direction. The sudden change nearly knocked me off of my feet.

"I think you might have accidentally insulted it," Chainy told me as I regained my balance. "It looks like we're not going to get past it without a battle."

I turned around to see that Natu had come up from her roost and was flapping her wings furiously chirping her little battle cry at us. I let out a small sigh. I really wanted to continue without any interruptions. Still, I knew from experience that things rarely went the way you wanted in the National Park. Natu continued chirping loudly all the while looking my Luxray up and down, as if it was sizing her up.

I thought about it for a second. Sure, Luxray was an electric-type Pokemon. A good round of Thunderbolt attacks could be sufficient to take down Natu; however, Natu learned mostly Psychic attacks. If I used Umbreon, I'd have immunity to most of Natu's attacks. There was also the fact that Natu would be caught off guard since it was expecting me to give a command to Luxray.

"I want you to sit this one out," I told Luxray. "Instead, we're going to be taking a different approach."

I pulled out a shiny red and white Pokeball. With little effort, I threw the Pokeball forward, making sure that it landed about a feet from me.

"Umbreon! Come on out!" I yelled as the Pokeball exploded in a brillaitn white glow. Umbreon emerged from the Pokeball and started to stretch. "Do you mind battling for me?"

Umbreon smiled and nodded. He turned towards Natu and started to growl. His fur stuck up as if he was a Jolteon. I knew that Natu had the speed advantage. Umbreon was a relatively slow Pokemon, with Natu being a bit faster. It didn't help much that Natu's speed was also being boosted by Tailwind. Still, Speed meant nothing if you had the right strategies.

"Let's start things off with Confuse Ray," I commanded the Dark-type Pokemon.

If it was successful, Umbreon's eyes would glow red as he tried to make eye contact with Natu. Once they'd made eye contact, Umbreon would overload Natu with confusing images in order to make it harder for it to distinguish reality from its imagination. Natu would become confused and sometimes even cause harm to itself instead of managing to attack Umbreon. I'd think of what to do next depending on the outcome of this attack.

"I want you to sit this one out," Dee said to Luxray. "Instead, we're going to be taking a different approach. Umbreon! Come on out!"

Dee pulled out a regular PokeBall and tossed it gently in front of him. There was a burst of white light, and when the glow faded his Umbreon was standing in front of him, stretching and looking around. The Dark-type mewled a greeting to his Trainer and then looked around for its opponent. It saw the Natu and began sizing it up.

"Do you mind battling for me?" Dee asked.

Umbreon shook his head and finished stretching. I wasn't sure, but I think it was excited to be battling again. I often thought about how bad it must have been for Dee to be trapped in the Archives and back offices, but it must have been even worse for his Pokemon. At least they were getting some exercise now.

"Let's start things off with Confuse Ray," Dee ordered.

Umbreon yapped, and stared straight at the Natu. His eyes began to glow red, and the inexperienced Flying type made the mistake of looking into the Moonlight Pokemon's eyes. Its own eyes went wide and started flicking around, as if it was seeing lots of phantom images. It was interesting to see a completely mental version of Confuse Ray - usually the Pokemon used external paraphernalia like glowing orbs or beams of light, but perhaps being a Dark type Umbreon had found a more effective way to confuse his opponents.

The Natu broke eye contact and shook its head, trying to clear the images from its mind. It began flapping its wings erratically, and it rose up into the air, no doubt preparing an attack. However, its left wing started to move much slower that its right one, resulting in a downwards spiral and a crash landing. The Flying-typed Pokemon hit the ground with the top of its head and fell over on its side. I saw that its pupils were rolling around in its eyes - the Confuse Ray had certainly done a number on the little bird.

Confuse Ray had been successfully executed. Natu had managed to accidentally lock eyes with Umbreon. It probably wasn't expecting it since Confuse Ray wasn't usually executed in that way. At any rate, I was happy to see that Umbreon had managed to get the little bird Pokemon confused. What's more, the attack had overtaken the Pokemon. Natu, seemingly going in for an attack, flew into the air; however, just as it was about to attack, the Pokemon fell to the ground in a spiral motion. Its eyes rolled to the back of its eyes.

"Great job Umbreon," I complimented the Pokemon. "Now, while it's on the ground, use Dark Pulse!"

Umbreon nodded. A dark purple aura formed around the Pokemon as he snarled at the Natu opposite him. As he opened his mouth, a dark ball of energy, purple on the outside and black on the inside, began to formed in front of his mouth. It grew bigger, and within seconds, it was big enough to cover the little Natu's entire body.

"Breeee! On!" He cried as he released the large pulse of energy towards the Natu.

If the attack hit, it would completely engulf the Pokemon, tormenting and imbuing it with even more dark thoughts. I felt a bit sorry for the Natu. Dark-type attacks were especially hard on Psychic type Pokemon. There was no doubt Natu would suffer during the battle. Still, it had wanted to battle us. I suppose I could have used a Pokedoll, but Rangers on carried a few with them, and there was no telling if I would need it for a stronger Pokemon that I needed to escape from. In the end, however, Natu would get stronger from its battle against Umbreon.

"Great job, Umbreon. Now, while it's on the ground, use Dark Pulse!" Dee commanded.

Umbreon cried acknowledgement and the fox-like Pokemon began to charge the attack. Light somehow dimmed around it, like the sun's rays were being absorbed and diminished by the Dark-type. Umbreon opened his mouth and a small rolling ball of energy was visible inside his jaws. It was deepest black, surrounded by dark purple gases that flowed around the actual attack itself, preserving the power. Umbreon cried again, and the black ball flew towards the Natu, which was still fluttering around on the ground. Instead of striking the small bird, the Dark Pulse denotated just in front of it, sending multiple black waves crashing into the Psychic-type, pushing it backwards across the ground.

The Natu was intelligent, though, and it used the force of the Moonlight Pokemon's attack to get airborne. It flew around in a wide circle and crashed into Umbreon, pecking at its side with sharp jerking motions. Umbreon shook himself like a dog does to shed water, and the Natu was thrown back into the air. It managed to recover, though, and it circled above the Umbreon, watching for another opening. It seemed to have recovered from the Confuse Ray, but slight spasms in its wings and feet told me that it hadn't worked the dark thoughts out of its mind just yet.

I could tell by watching Dee that he was a bit conflicted about battling the Natu when he didn't intend to capture it, but he was a gentle person, and the Natu had certainly asked for it. Besides, the Psychic type would earn valuable battle experience and I could always heal it if it got too wounded.
