Individual RP: Nitro

The day had finally come. Yes, the day where I was called out of retirement to once again go back to rangering. I gotta say, being retired felt pretty nice. Didn't have anything to worry about, and could just spend my days relaxing, and playing some golf when I wanted. But then I was called by the Elite Rangers to come back, and work for them once more. I tried to argue against it, but they said I'm twenty-one, so I had the rest of my life to be a bitter old man, they needed me now to pick up the slack for all the other rangers who weren't working currently. I eventually caved in, and agreed to do so. Though I wasn't going to like this.

I arrived at the main ranger outpost at like seven fifteen PM, and ended up taking an hour and a half nap before actually getting ready to go do some work. I was pretty tired, cause dinner had filled me up, but regardless, I apparently had work to do. I had my Pokeball's with me, the ones that Eric hadn't taken with him to go through the park himself, but I hadn't called any out to keep me some company. As I started getting the info on the trainer I'd be taking through the park, I decided to send out Crobat to keep me some company, cause Flying-types were always handy to have around.

I got outside to the front bench, and decided that was the best spot to wait for the oncoming trainer. I checked out his info as I waited. His name was John Shay. And given his items, he was clearly looking for a Staryu, though I'm not sure what else he had on his mind. I was a little rusty at this, because it had been some time since I took a trainer through the park, but hey I'm sure everything would be fine.

"Well, we're off to the Great Lakes," I mused. "You'll love that, won't you, Makuhita?"

"Politoed!" Makuhita cried loudly, nodding energetically. Of course he would, being a Politoed. The Great Lakes were the natural habitat of all Water-type Pokemon in the National Park, and while Makuhita wasn't from the Great Lakes, he still enjoyed the area more than any other in the National Park.

We could see the bright blue body of the Lakes up ahead on the horizon, though we were still a while from reaching it. First things first, however, we had to find our Ranger.

"Oh, I almost forgot..." I muttered. I pulled a cube-shaped machine from my bag, and loaded a disk into the slot on the front. The familiar cry of a Staryu began playing. As we neared the Lakes, this should help me attract Staryu. Last time, it failed to help me encounter any, but hopefully, this time would be different.

I spotted the Ranger Outpost ahead, and then I saw a man resting on the bench out in front of it. He was lazily watching a purple bat with four wings flapping a few feet above him - a Crobat. Was this my Ranger?

I walked up with my hand outstretched. "Hey, my name is John, and this is Makuhita, my Politoed. Are you my Ranger, by any chance?"

 

I saw a trainer show up after about three minutes of waiting around. Perhaps I napped longer than I should have before, cause any longer, and he may have ended up waiting for me instead. But thankfully that had not happened, and so we could get to work, before I fell asleep again, and someone came along and picked my pocket. But the odds of that were somewhat slim.

"Hey, my name is John, and this is Makuhita, my Politoed. Are you my Ranger, by any chance?" He asked, as he had his hand stretched out, for a handshake as a greeting.

I shook his hand, like always, and said, "that's right, my name is Gary, and I'll be the one who takes you through the park this time around. I see you already have your Staryu voice disk going, so let's head out, and see if we can't find something that you want." And with that, I started to lead John to the front gate, so that we could get going already.

We got down to the gate, and walked in all nonchalant, while John's Staryu voice disk was playing, in an attempt to attract the star shaped Pokemon to us. Couldn't blame him for wanting that. Starmie was a pretty good Pokemon, with good typing, great speed, and a useful moveset. I'd want one myself if I didn't already have one. But, here was to hoping he could leave with one like he wanted.

We walked along the path for about five minutes, as I checked out the scenery. I forgot how this place looked in my absence. It was certainly an interesting site seeing all this water around. It didn't take long at this point for something to show up now.

It was a small, blue, tadpole like Pokemon. It had large eyes, a pink mouth, and a large tail. It had a black, and white swill on its midsection. It wasn't a rare Pokemon, and it
certainly wasn't a Staryu, but it was a Pokemon that was sought after at times, due to the evolution it could take on, in the form of John's Politoed there.

The man shook my hand. "That's right, my name is Gary, and I'll be the one who takes you through the Park this time around. I see you already have your Staryu Voice Disk going, so let's head out, and see if we can't find something that you want."

We set out towards the Lakes, and it was a pretty short hike before we arrived at the very edges of the area. Almost immediately, we happened upon our first encounter.

"Do you care to capture this little Poliwag here?" Gary asked me.

I shook my head at the navy-blue Pokemon staring up at us curiously. Besides me, Makuhita waved at it enthusiastically, no doubt recalling when he was a Poliwag himself.

"Let's try and leave this thing behind, though if it's necessary, I've got cash for a Pokedoll," I said, showing $500 worth in bills.

Personally I thought he was going to catch it, and make Poliwag stew, but I guess he just wasn't all that hungry. Or, maybe an idea such as that one didn't exactly appeal all that much to him. Either way, it was time to try to get away.

I stretched my leg out, and started walking forward, like there was nothing there, and hey what do you know? It actually worked! It seemed we had a stroke of luck in John getting away from this Poliwag, despite his Politoed clearly showed some interest in it, no doubt recalling on when it was one itself, but that didn't matter now, since the little guy jumped into the water, letting us be on our way.

We kept walking along. It was another good couple of minutes before we found anything, so I was just enjoying the sights. Sure, it was mostly water, but hey seeing a body of water like that was certainly always a pleasant sight to behold. It was relaxing too. With this, as well as the nice breeze that was going on, I could have very easily fallen asleep. No time for that now though, since a Pokemon, slowly came out of the water our way.

It was a small, to medium sized, pink Pokemon. It somewhat reminded me of a salamander. It had four legs, each with a single claw, and a pretty long tail. It lived up to why it got out of the water slowly with it's name, but still it was a pretty cool Pokemon, who, like Poliwag, could evolve into one of two things. I wasn't sure if John would want it or not, but asking couldn't hurt.

Gary nodded, and walked forward as if Poliwag wasn't there. I had my doubts about this plan, but followed nonetheless. To my surprise, this worked, and Poliwag walked away from us. Gary turned, clearly a bit surprised himself. Why not, eh?

We kept going on along the lake, and I looked out for the sight as much as I did for Pokemon. The pure blue surface of the lake glistened beautifully, and I couldn't help but consider this area as one of my favorites in all of the National Park. Makuhita was excited just to be here, and it showed in the Pokemon's eyes as they darted everywhere in excitement.

Gary stopped in front of me, and I halted too. A pink Pokemon was lazily crawling out of the water - a Slowpoke.

"Interested in this Slowpoke?" Gary asked.

I shook my head. "I'm only really looking for Staryu, although I wouldn't say no to a Feebas. Anyway, let's keep going - I'll buy a Pokedoll if necessary."

Sure it wasn't one of the two Pokemon he was exactly after, but it still could have made for some good trade bait if he wanted. But hey it was his decision. He probably didn't wanna spend the time batting it, and/or waste a ball on it.

I attempted to lead us around the thing, but to it's credit, despite it being a slow one, it got in front of us, and cut off our path. It was a bit unusual, since I figured it just wanted to go off on it's own, and rest, but it must have been in the mood for a battle, or to play or something. But I knew John didn't have any interest in doing any of that, so I took the money he had for the Pokedoll, and took a Pokedoll out of the bag of supplies I had. I gave it to the Slowpoke, and started to lead us away while it was distracted.

We continued to walk along for another few moments, while I kept my eyes open to see if the voice disk would manage to attract a Staryu. If it didn't work this time, he would only have another two attempts at it, before he would need to go again, and come back. I was hoping it didn't come to that, but it was certainly a likely possibility.

After another two minutes, from the water, a tiny, white, eel-like Pokemon, poked its head out at us, before fully coming out. It was one of the smallest, as well as lightest, Pokemon out there. It was an Electric-type, not a Water one, but thanks to its handy ability, Levitate, it didn't have the drawback of being weak to Ground like other Electric-types. I knew John wouldn't want it, due to not saying it was on his want list, but I had to ask anyway.

Gary tried leading me past the Slowpoke, but to my surprise, it cut us off. For a typically lackadaisical Pokemon, this one was looking very hostile at the moment. We'd need a Pokedoll.

I handed Gary the money, and he set down the item.

We continued walking down the beach, keeping our eyes peeled for a Staryu. I figured it was due time for me to spot one. However, things didn't turn out my way. A small silver eel with yellow accents crossed our path - the rare Tynamo. A lot of people held interest in the Pokemon, but not me. When Gary asked me if I wanted it, I shook my head.

"Let's keep going," I said, holding out cash if necessary.

It wasn't every day you would see someone pass up a Tynamo, but once again he had already said the only two things he had any interest in, and so then there was nothing more left to do here, besides trying to get away, and look for that Staryu. Weren't many chances left, but still.

We tried to get away from the Tynamo, but it fired out a Charge Beam our way, to get our attention, and try to stop us. I didn't know how, or why, but hey I didn't feel like standing around here, and getting my hands dirty, by having Crobat here teach that Tynamo a lesson. So, I took the money necessary, and pulled out another Pokedoll, which I threw right at the Tynamo, in an attempt to hit it in the head. It didn't hit it in the head, but it did provide the distraction that was needed, and so we left once more.

We started walking on our merry way again, with Crobat circling the area, trying to see if there was a Staryu around or not. It didn't look promising currently, but I wasn't ready to give up just yet. We kept walking along, with Crobat flying around, looking at what would be coming our way. It was another good few minutes, before I heard a bush rustle a few feet away us.

I went over to investigate, and from the bush a small duck-like creature walked out. It was yellow in color, and looked like it was somewhat confused. Though, I believed this was just a ploy, to make it seem weak. And, though it clearly had some psychic powers, it was purely a Water-type. It wasn't a bad Pokemon, but I knew it was clearly something that John didn't wanna bother with.

"Well, I know you don't want this Psyduck, so let's skip to the part where you say you wanna escape, and offer to pay for a Pokedoll if you need."

We tried walking past Tynamo, but it fired a blast of electricity at us. That was the Charge Beam attack. This Pokemon was aggressive, and I sighed as I handed the cash over to Gary - we'd need another Pokedoll.

Once again, Gary set down a Pokedoll for Tynamo, then we safely walked away as Tynamo darted right for the doll.

I had two encounters left on the Staryu Voice Disk. As I counted my money, I noticed I only had $500 left, too - enough for one more Pokedoll. If neither of the next two encounters were my Staryu, then I'd have to go home and stop my Staryu hunt for awhile as I gathered some more money for the expenses.

A yellow duck waddled into our path - Psyduck. I sighed in frustration as I nodded to Gary. We were going to leave this one behind too. I grabbed the last of my cash, in case I needed it again.

 

This time around, John didn't even say anything, he just looked at me, and nodded. Wasn't even gonna waste his breath on this one, seeing as how I already knew he didn't wanna bother with the Psyduck, and I guess Psyduck itself must have known that too, since it decided to sidestep us, and let us pass by it. I was guessing it wasn't game for a battle itself, and had just happened to be passing through the area. Or, it was looking for food or something. I dunno, I didn't understand a Pokemon's mind.

We started walking down the path again, with John using the last bit of his Staryu voice disk that he could, and looking doubtful of it working. I was pretty doubtful myself, but he it was still worth at least attempting it, cause the worst that would happen would be that it didn't work, and John had to come back again. I was pretty sure he was all prepared for that eventuality.

We walked a few more minutes, and out of the water jumped a relatively big Pokemon, especially compared to the ones we had already been encountering. It was actually the fully evolved form, of a standard starter. It was a relatively common, but powerful, and commonly used Pokemon. It was half Ground, and half Water-type. It was mostly blue in color, with some orange on its body, and seemed to only have like three fingers where it would have those. It was a mud fish Pokemon. Wasn't something I knew John wanted though.

We watched Psyduck walk right past us awkwardly. I wasn't sure if the Pokemon saw us at all or what, but I guess it was fine since in the end, I didn't have to waste $500 on another Pokedoll.

Now we were down to my last encounter with Voice Disk. I sighed, not expecting a miracle now. Lo and behold, my next encounter was Swampert. The large blue-and-orange Pokemon grunted at us threateningly as it spotted us approaching it as it rested near the water's surface.

"Hey, look, it's a Swampert," Gary said.

I tried not to sound too disappointed as I settled for a quick picture of the Pokemon to sell later. "I think I'll pack up and try again another time - let's head back now. Thanks a lot, Gary, hopefully we can cross paths again."

He clearly was though, but at least he made the best of the poor situation, and took out his camera so he could snag a picture of this Swampert, and at least walk away with a little money, to make up for what he had to spend on Pokedolls.

This was a pretty quick run, for my return run, but I wasn't complaining that much, because it helped me get back into the groove of things, and remember how the park can treat a person at times. "No problem, John. Who knows, we might end up crossing paths again like you said. Maybe then you'll have some better luck," I said, laughing a little as we walked out of here, and went on our way home.
