I didn't really like the Great Lakes. I'm not entirely sure why, as some of my more enjoyable explorations had occurred here. Perhaps that was why I didn't - it often seemed like I spent more time here at the Great Lakes than anywhere else in the Park combined. You could only see so many lakes and rivers before they all looked the same, and there was nothing to break the montony except for a couple of caves, a patch or two of trees and a small mountain range at the furthest edge.

Still, lots of Trainers liked coming here, and I was sure it was because many powerful Pokemon could be found here. Starmie, Kingdra, Jellicent, and many other powerful Water-types lurked here in the Lakes, and although they were still quite rare, they were found here with more frequency than most other places in the world.

My fingers tapped impatiently on the side of my PDA as I glanced once more over the file of the Trainer I had been sent to escort today. His name was John Shay - couldn't say that I'd ever heard of him. He was bringing a Staryu Voice Disk, and I wasn't the least bit surprised. He was also being accompanied by two Pokemon, not unusual, and I could have called the Dragonite from a mile away. Perhaps the only Pokemon more frequently used in the Park than Dragonite was Infernape, and they didn't do too well in this Water-based area.

John's second choice was much more interesting - a Venusaur. Venusaur weren't particularly powerful, but they were sturdy, and a recent breeding breakthrough had resulted in markedly increased speed, so they were showing a comeback in the professional battle leagues. I closed down the PDA and slipped it into my pocket. Maybe John's was one of these powerful Venusaur, and I would get to see it in action. It was something to hope for on what would probably be a boring run.

We touched down at the Great Lakes.

I hopped off of Cloyster, my Dragonite, and we walked towards the Great Lakes. We had just been here, the same three of us - I had also brought along Prinplup, my Venusaur. That time, our first encounter had been exactly what we were looking for in Jellicent. Hopefully, this time we would have similar luck.

I pulled out a Pokeplayer from my bag, and inserted the Staryu Voice Disk. I hit play, and it began playing the distinctive "Hiya!" that was the cry of Staryus.

"Right, we better find the Ranger quick," I muttered to Dragonite, looking around. It would be absolutely terrible luck if I happened upon a Staryu without my Ranger being around.

We spotted him quickly. The man was standing at the edge of a lake, watching the waves calmly. I recalled his face from my first journey into the Park - the one to Mount Deckbi. That was the one in which I had seen four different Rangers, with this man being my final one. I couldn't recall his name, however. I walked up to him.

"Hey, not sure if you remember me at all, but obviously, I'm John Shay," I said, offering my hand. "We went to Mount Deckbi together ages ago, but I'm sorry, I don't remember your name?"

Slight thuds in the ground alerted to the fact that something was nearby, and I turned to see a Dragonite being accompanied by a Trainer walking towards me. No doubt the young man I'd be escorting through the Great Lakes today.

"Hey, not sure if you remember me at all, but obviously, I'm John Shay. We went to Mount Deckbi together ages ago, but I'm sorry, I don't remember your name?"

"Actually, you do look familiar," I said, shaking his hand when he offered it. "I didn't recognise your name, but I don't think we even got as far as an introduction on that run. If I remember correctly, I acted as little more than a glorified valet. Anyway, my name is James Carter. Nice to meet you, John."

A heavy splash in the lake distracted me from the conversation. I turned and saw a large fish with white fins jumping out of the water repeatedly. I wasn't sure, but I thought it might have been trying to attract our attention.

"Well, that didn't take long." I laughed. "Are you interested in attempting to capture a Basculin?"

"Actually, you do look familiar," James responded, his brow creasing a little. "I didn't recognise your name, but I don't think we even got as far as an introduction on that run. If I remember correctly, I acted as little more than a glorified valet. Anyway, my name is James Carter. Nice to meet you, John."

Suddenly, I heard a splash from the lake. I turned, and to my surprise, saw a navy-coloured fish staring back. I hadn't been expecting a Pokemon so soon.

Neither did James, apparently. He laughed a little. "Well, that didn't take long. Are you interested in attempting to capture a Basculin?"

I shook my head without even having to think about it. "I'm good."

John immediately shook his head and said that he did not. I was not particularly surprised by this, as Basculin weren't exactly top picks in professional battle tournaments. Still, I knew that they could be incredibly strong if raised right. I had once battled a Basculin with the Adaptability Ability, and it kept on using Aqua Jet to outspeed my Pokemon. If more Trainers gave it a chance, I was sure it could do great things. Still, it was hard to change habits and strategies, especially in the high-level Pokemon battling world.

The Basculin jumped through the water a few more times, but it finally realised that it wasn't going to get a battle today, so it flicked some water onto John's face and disappeared into the deep blue lake. I laughed as John grumbled and wiped his face clean.

"Alright, let's move on," I said. John's Dragonite hummed agreement, and we started following the path towards the docks. I wasn't sure what John wanted to do regarding his path - we could go along the edge of the lake or across it, either on Pokemon or on a boat. I decided that I'd let him choose what to do when we got here. He looked like he was a bit of an Expedition veteran.

I heared a familiar yapping sound, and I looked to my right to see a small blue Pokemon looking up at us curiously. It had orange whiskers and a longish fin-like tail. I turned to John.

"How about a Mudkip, then?" I asked him.

The Basculin seemed to realize I didn't want to battle, and slapped a bit of water into my face before disappearing. A bit annoyed, I rubbed my face dry. I suppose on the bright side, I didn't have to battle it.

"Alright, let's move on." James led me on. We kept moving along the path, and the dock became visible on the horizon. For the moment though, there was nothing doing.

Then, we heard something cry from the right, and we turned to face our next encounter: a small Mudkip.

James turned to face me. "How about a Mudkip, then?"

I shook my head. "No thanks. I'm really only looking for Staryu right now, and I have a Swampert anyways."

"No thanks. I'm really only looking for Staryu right now, and I have a Swampert anyways," he replied.

The Mudkip didn't seem to have any objections to this. It finished looking us both over and then turned around. With a flick of its fin-like tail it disappeared into the depths of the wild grass. People wondered how Pokemon could sneak up on Trainers in long grass - it's much easier than you'd think.

I cricked my neck and then led Nitro out to the lake. The largest lake was freshwater and pretty much the first one you stumble across when entering through the main gate. There are boats that can be taken out over the water, but most Trainers preferred to ride out on their Pokemon. As it turned out, that was a decision that Nitro didn't have to make yet. I spotted a gray-and-blue turtle Pokemon swimming about ten metres out from the shore. I pointed it out to him, snapping my fingers to get his attention.

"How about a Tirtouga then?"

The Mudkip gave us a quick look over, then walked away when we made no move to fight it, crawling into the long grass.

James and I moved on, quietly watching the lake's surface as we neared it. The waves lapped against the shore quietly, and it was a very peaceful sight overall. Then, I noticed a small grey creature emerge from the water.

James noticed it as well, and recognized it before I could. "How about a Tirtouga?"

"I'm good," I told James. Tirtouga held no value to me, and it would be easier if we just moved past this one as well. Hopefully it wouldn't make a problem out of things.

"Nah, I'm good," ohn replied. He didn't seem interested in the Tirtouga, and I didn't blame him. Carracosta were very much a one-trick pony - raise their power with Shell Smash and then hit as hard as possible before they were taken down by priority moves or a super-tanky Grass type. I nodded and led John onwards towards the docks.

"So, where do you want to go from here?" I asked him. "We can either go out onto the lake or continue around the edge. If you're looking for a Staryu, it's probably better to go out over the open water, that's usually where they are found."

I heard a light yapping sound, and I saw that the Tirtouga had followed us. I vented a quick sigh. "Before you can choose though, you'll have to deal with this little guy. I can offer you a PokeDoll for $500 if you're not interested in battling it."

James nodded, and led me away from Tirtouga.

"So, where do you want to go from here?" he asked. "We can either go out onto the lake or continue around the edge. If you're looking for a Staryu, it's probably better to go out over the open water, that's usually where they are found."

Then, I heard a yapping sound coming from behind us. I turned to see the Tirtouga continuing to follow us.

I sighed. It wouldn't leave us, then. Beside me, James sighed too.

"Before you can choose though, you'll have to deal with this little guy. I can offer you a PokeDoll for $500 if you're not interested in battling it."

I handed over $500 to James. I wasn't really in the mood to deal with this right now.

John handed over $500 in notes, and I couldn't help but notice that he wasn't too happy about doing so. I took the cash and expected him to take the doll but he didn't reach out for it so I shrugged and threw it towards the water myself. The Tirtouga reared up out of the water and caught the soft toy in a vice-like grip with its mouth before disappearing under the water.

I waited around for John to give me an answer to my question, but he didn't - he must have been concentrating on something else. I shrugged and continued leading him around the lake. The problem was that there wasn't really a set place that Staryu appeared. The best bet was in the open water, but as they had the power of levitation they could survive pretty much anywhere. In actuality, walking on the shore probably had the same chances of a Staryu encounter as Surfing aimlessly on the lake.

My eyes flicked over the water every few seconds, and after a minute of walking I saw a large pink floating in the water. My heart sunk as I realised what it was - the Pokemon whose name I could never pronounce correctly.

"Over there is a Pokemon, want to catch it?" I asked John. "It's an Alomomolomoloma."

James set down the Doll, and we kept going along the shore. He was looking around attentively, most likely to help me with my search for a Staryu. However, we happened upon something else.

A large pink fish emerged from the water's surface, and I found myself overjoyed. It wasn't a Staryu and I wasn't planning to battle it, but there was a fun factor here anywho.

"Over there is a Pokemon, want to catch it? It's an Alomomolomoloma."

"An Alomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomolama?" I asked. "Well, I don't think I need an Alomomomomomomomomomomomola, so I'll pass."

I pulled out another $500 and flashed it to James in case I needed to buy another Pokedoll.

"An Alomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomolama? Well, I don't think I need an Alomomomomomomomomomomomola, so I'll pass," John said.

I snorted with laughter but took the cash anyway, just in case. Alomomola could be incredibly persistent, like other healer Pokemon. Chansey and Audino rarely gave up either, and it was better to be safe than sorry. Unfortunately the current battling metagame didn't have much room for cleric Pokemon - it was all about sweepers and hard-hitting revengers. Another doll went flying out into the lake and the Alomomola swam after it.

We continued along the edge of the lake, and I began to hear a faint ringing sound. I looked around in an attempt to see where the noise was coming from. Suddenly, something exploded out from underneath the water. It was small and blue and looked kind of like a jellyfish, except it was floating.

"Wow, it's not every day you get to see a Manaphy," I said to John. "Just a pity it's not a Phione - Trainers are allowed to catch those these days."

The Aloma refused to leave. I sighed - I'd have to pay the man. I handed the $500 at James, and walked away as he dropped the Doll on the ground. This sucked, I only had one encounter left with the Staryu Voice Disk. What would my next encounter be?

James caught up, and then we heard a faint humming sound coming from the lake. I turned. Was this Staryu?

A Manaphy leaped out of the water joyfully, and landed at my feet. I looked at the legendary Pokemon, and sighed. It wasn't a Staryu - I'd have to leave, reload the Voice Disk, and then come back here. For what it was worth, I snapped a picture of the Manaphy. I had a Phione, however, so I wasn't too impressed by this Pokemon.

I turned to James. "Thanks for taking me here, but I'm going to leave now. It doesn't look like there's Staryu here with my name on it this time around, so I'll have to try my luck again in a different run. Hopefully, we'll meet up again another time, James."

John took a quick picture and then turned to face me.

"Oh, all right, fair enough," I replied, shaking his hand. "Good luck with your subsequent runs - I hope you find a Staryu."
