    OOC: Hopefully this will be fun. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me either here or through VM. If I can offer some general advice, though, unless you really want it don't catch a Pokemon that is available in the Mart. Even if you don't want it, there would be some people who would swap you for it. There are a few mons in your run that'd I'd happily take ;) Also, your call as to whether the person that used to battle Aurora is either my Ranger character or my Trainer character. If you'd like, it can be my Ranger character and that way we can fill up some MCR by talking like we haven't met in a while, but I don't mind either way.

    ~~~~~
    I was sitting in the Ranger Outpost at the Woods, playing my handheld video game. There hadn't been many Trainers coming through here recently - rumour was they were all heading to the Great Lakes, and a few were even going to Meteor Valley. While I kind of missed the adventure behind going on an expedition, I wasn't at all opposed to lying around and playing video games all day.
    There had been a massive influx of new Rangers recently. I assume some kind of advertising campaign had been distributed on the mainland. It was a good thing too - we'd been a little short handed. The Boss had even been forced to take a Trainer at one point in time. I had volunteered to take the Woods Outpost because of one of the new Rangers. She seemed very nice, but her Crobat scared the hell out of me. I saw that she had been assigned to man Meteor Valley, so I took the Woods because there was a fair bit of distance in-between them.
    I was just about to finish the level when my PDA beeped. There was a Trainer arriving inside five minutes. Their file was mailed to me, but I didn't open it just yet. They'd be here soon; I should probably open up the gate ready for them. I reached out for Dual through our telepathic link to let him know we had a Trainer.
    <I'll be there as soon as I can, but I might be a little late,> he replied.
    That's fine, I said, and broke the connection. I had no idea where my Gallade was, but he was probably out training somewhere. He'd catch up with us later. I left the Outpost and moved over to the large steel gate. A motion-detection camera watched me as I walked. When I got to the gate, I danced a complicated yet embarrassing little jig. The dance was actually a code that opened the gates - without lots of practice no one would be able to copy it and break in.
    The gate swung open, creaking a little bit as it opened. It wouldn't close until I walked back through. I sat down on a bench and waited for the Trainer to arrive.
    OOC: I'm inclined to say that it was Jathan who was involved in the early battles. So you should have fun explaining why Gallade is with Chainy. =D
    A chill breeze blew across the wide pathway between the park's entrance and the Woods gate. The seasons were beginning to change; it was that annoying time of year when the weather just can't decide if it should be warm or cold. So, despite the cold wind, the sun was still visible.
    Dianne, for one, didn't care for the current weather at all. She walked hurriedly toward the Woods gatehouse, her jacket zipped up and her hands stuffed in her pockets. She could handle cold, but wind was another story. Though she was probably overreacting to such a tiny breeze, and she knew it, Dianne couldn't stand any sort of wind just because it wouldn't stop. She would wear a jacket, and it would blow up her sleeves. She could seal her sleeves, and it would blow in her ears. She could wear earmuffs, and it would sting her eyes.
    There was just no way to win against the wind.
    Dianne passed the outpost building without even stopping to look inside. She could already see the gate; it stood open, and the trees beyond it stood blessedly firm despite the breeze. Those trunks could block the wind, certainly. Dianne might not have been able to defeat the breeze, but she could definitely run from it.
    Dianne stared through the gates, looking for any trace of the ranger she was supposed to meet. There was one other person in the area; he looked a little bit older than Dianne, and was sitting on a bench near the gate looking rather calm.
    The possibility that that could be her ranger occurred to Dianne, but she dismissed it almost immediately. She had heard that rangers tended to have a Pokemon with them when their trainers arrived; something about safety or convenience or some such jazz. And this kid didn't look like the outdoorsy type, so he probably didn't spend much time in the park. He was probably a newbie here, just like Dianne.
    Maybe the service was just slow here.
    When she was within earshot, Dianne greeted the young man with a quick wave before she stuck her hand back in her jacket pocket. She leaned against a gatepost, trying to appear nonchalant, and not altogether succeeding-- that darn breeze was still out, and now she would have to wait outside in it until that darn ranger decided to show up.
    Though, Dianne realized, she wasn't sure she even wanted to meet the ranger just yet. What kind of person couldn't at least be outside by the time Dianne got here? She had signed in a good five or six minutes ago. The ranger had to be some sort of fat lazy old guy to not have bothered to come out yet.
    Dianne smiled. She might as well be sociable and enjoy her time with this kid before she had to surrender herself to the dumb old ranger's presence.
    "Hey," she said, "are you waiting to go in, too?"
    OOC: Wow, it looks like you're what we like to call an "epic poster". This is going to be fun :)
    ~~~~~

    It wasn't long before I saw a figure in the distance. I watched out of the corner of my eyes as they approached. At first I couldn't tell whether they were male or female - they'd wrapped themselves up fairly well in an attempt to fight off the cold. I was tempted to zoom in on them using my visor, but I decided I could wait.

    As they got closer, I could see by the person's face and way they walked that she was a young woman. I pulled up the Trainer file on my PDA, and sure enough, the Trainer I was taking through was one Dianne Shirect. I was about to get up and go greet her when she waved before quickly retreating her hand. She then started leaning casually against a part of the gate.

    I couldn't hide a small smile. Apparently Dianne didn't like the cold, which was good - the inner parts of the Woods could get quite warm thanks to the protection from the wind. Personally, I didn't mind the cold - I much preferred it to heat. I was only wearing the generic Ranger uniform of a shirt, shorts, and a vest, with my pack nestled in the small of my back.

    I watched Dianne for a little while out of the corner of my eye. I wasn't quite sure what she was doing - was she nervous? Embarassed? I was about to get up again when she decided to walk over.

    "Hey, are you waiting to go in, too?" she asked me.

    I couldn't hold back a little snort of laughter. People mistaking me as a Trainer wasn't common, but it did happen every now and then. I mentally kicked myself - I should have got up and greeted her.

    "In a manner of speaking." I smiled as I spoke. "My name is James Carter, but most people call me Chainy. Not really sure why. Anyway, call me whatever you like. I assume you are Dianne Shirect? Ready to go on your expedition?" I asked her.

    OOC: Certain post flavors are longer than others. My lengths vary a super-lot. As this one evidences, I think.

    Where Dianne expected some sort of remark on the park's service or the stupid weather, she received a snort of laughter. "In a manner of speaking. My name is James Carter, but most people call me Chainy. Not really sure why. Anyway, call me whatever you like."

    Dianne wasn't sure what he was getting at. Even without the rangers here, it's not like they were going to be talking for that long.

    He continued. "I assume you are Dianne Shirect? Ready to go on your expedition?"

    Dianne suppressed a powerful urge to turn around and repeatedly bang her head against the gatepost.

    Instead, she took her hands out of her pockets and stood up a little straighter. No use making herself look any more stupid than she already had, wind be darned. Not acknowledging her mistake, she said, "Yeah, I'm Dianne. Good to meet you, Chainy."

    Dianne almost tripped over the name. How do you get that from 'James'? Weird name, Chainy. Probably a weird kid, too; best keep that in mind. But, at least he's not fat and old and lazy. There's a lot to be said for that.

    But even not-fat-old-laziness didn't really excuse the laugh earlier. Even now, she had some sort of standard of dignity to maintain.

    "So." Dianne gestured toward the woods with one hand. "Lead on, I suppose."

    She hoped that she sounded like a responsible trainer who wanted to get down to business, but really, she just wanted to go fight something so she wouldn't have to think for a bit. Nothing like a good battle for stress relief.

    Ranger Chainy

    OOC: Your last post was still waaaay longer the the usual, which is awesome.

    ~~~~~
    "Yeah, I'm Dianne. Good to meet you, Chainy," Dianne replied. She slightly lifted her hand in the direction of the Woods before saying, "so, lead on, I suppose."
    I smiled and led her through the gate - it seemed like Dianne's bearing and dignity were very important to her. That was interesting - most Trainers that came to the Park were down-and-dirty kind of people. Still, I wondered if she could keep her dignity after being hit by Mankey excrement or chased for over a kilometre by an angry Nidoking.
    As we walked through the gate, it registered me and automatically swung shut. We walked along one of the forest paths - out near the edge of the forests the cobblestone paths were maintained and not grown-over by grass and weeds. If Dianne wanted to go looking for some strong Pokemon, we'd need to head into the center of the forest, where very few expeditions travelled. Still, I was confident that we'd be fine if we went there. I had a full crew of six fully-trained Pokemon that could probably hold off an army if needed.
    A couple of minutes after entering the forest a Masquerain flew past us, landing on the forest floor. It was a fair-sized Pokemon, easily the size of a small child. It chirped a hello and then began digging around at the moss on the base of a tree.
    I turned to look at Dianne. "Are you interested in trying to catch a Masquerain?" I asked her. "Don't forget, you can only take three Pokemon with you when you leave, and if you don't want to battle we can always try to move on."
    OOC: Gaaah I fail. Sorry for not posting. School's been being a butt, and it's probably going to keep doing so, but I'll try not to fall behind again.
    The gate swung shut behind them, and they walked into the forest.
    The wind noticeably vanished as they passed the treeline, and Dianne had to smile. Though life was being unkind to her and making her say stupid stuff-- she still refused to take responsibility-- at least now she didn't have to deal with stupid weather. Really, it was pretty nice inside the forest.
    Pokemon were strangely absent for a while, and the forest was tranquil. Dianne wondered if they had made a wrong turn somewhere, but that made no sense, considering the stone path they were following.
    She was about to ask Chainy-- weird name, weird kid, right?-- if they had even picked the right path, when a sizable flying Pokemon swooped across the path in front of them. Dianne stumbled a bit; the Pokemon moved fast, and it had been awfully close to them.
    The Pokemon landed lightly at the base of a tree on the other side of the path, and Dianne watched it closely. It was a Masquerain, obviously; it had fins on the top of its head that looked like eyes. Good strategy, in Dianne's opinion. Not only did it seem like it was watching you, but it seemed larger than it actually was.
    The Masquerain gave a friendly squeak, and started digging at the undergrowth beneath a tree.
    "Are you interested in trying to catch a Masquerain?" asked Chainy, and Dianne had to think. It was a cool Pokemon, but from what she remembered of her studies, it wasn't that great of a battle Pokemon. And, based on its willingness to 'talk' to humans, this one was probably even less combat-oriented than others.
    "...if you don't want to battle, we can always move on," Chainy continued.
    By Dianne's judgement, it was probably worthwhile to move on. Though Masquerains were cool Pokemon, she really had no use for one, and she really should be keeping her own Pokemon in top condition for upcoming encounters.
    "Let's keep going," Dianne said, still watching the Pokemon by the tree. As she turned to leave, she waved at it, and hoped faintly that it wouldn't think her exit awkward. She didn't want to upset such a seemingly good-natured Pokemon.
    OOC: Feel free to take your time, if you feel like there's an obligation to post in here the fun will quickly go away. Just post at your natural pace, and if irl things get in the way that's fine.
    ~~~~~

    "Let's keep going," Dianne said. As we began to move past the large Pokemon, Dianne gave it a timid-seeming wave good bye. The Pokemon waved back with one of its large wings. The patterning on the wing caused the wave to look like a giant eye was winking at us.

    I smiled, and we moved on past the giant Bug. The trees around us were large, but there was plenty of space between them so I didn't feel claustrophic. I didn't really mind close spaces, but sometimes the Trainers did, so I had to always keep tabs on the environment.

    As we moved deeper into the woods, the pristine cobblestone path began to break apart, and small patches of weeds and grass grew in-between the stones. We should probably try to keep the thoroughfares in better shape, but in these woods, the plants tended to grow faster than they should.

    Five minutes after leaving the Masquerain behind, I decided to stop for a minute. We hadn't seen any Pokemon for a while now, and while we weren't that far into the forest it was still a little strange. I turned to Dianne to ask her if she had seen anything I hadn't.

    There was a long purple snake sneaking up behind her. It was staying close to the ground, and I had no idea what it was doing because Pokemon didn't usually attack humans. Nevertheless, it had a sinister look in its eyes, so I shouted a warning to Dianne. If she wanted to battle it that was fine - if she didn't I might need to scare it off.

    OOC: For behold, verily verily, I am fail. -_-|||

    Dianne followed Chainy as he led deeper into the woods. The forest was still oddly spacious, but Dianne didn't mind the scenery at all; actually, she thought the gigantic trees conveyed a sense of grandeur that can't be accomplished with simple crowding.

    Above Dianne's head, the canopies of the trees were growing thicker, and beginning to filter out sunlight. The forest floor was only patchily lit; most areas were in partial shadow. Dianne could still see clearly, but the inconsistent light made it more difficult to see where one object ended and another began.

    No Pokemon appeared for another few minutes as the pair of trainers delved further into the foliage. The cobbled path eventually wore away, but the trail continued on. At a wide point along the trail, Chainy stopped. Dianne didn't question him; this must be one of those ranger/tour guide moments. She could vaguely envision the ranger gesturing to locations along the path: 'Right here was where the great trainer So-and-so caught his first glimpse of his great opponent...'

    Dianne smiled a bit. Weird kid. Best not interfere with whatever his reason for stopping was.

    Absently, she took her eyeglasses off and began rubbing the lenses against the hem of her jacket. Without her glasses on, she could only faintly see Chainy open his mouth to speak, and stop awkwardly as his eyes focused on something behind Dianne.

    He shouted something, and Dianne, startled, spun around to see whatever he had been pointing at. Reflexively, the hand that wasn't holding her glasses pulled a Pokeball from its place at her waist.

    On the path behind Dianne, the shadows blurred together as her eyes struggled to adjust to the lack of lenses. Something was clearly moving at the base of one of the trees; Dianne couldn't tell what it was, but she was fairly sure that it had to be something unpleasant to get a reaction like that out of Chainy. After all, he worked here, right?

    "Don't come any closer," she growled. She slowly began to raise her glasses back toward her eyes, trying to provoke no movement from the Pokemon. While her right hand raised her glasses, her left held the Pokeball in the air between herself and the wild Pokemon.

    OOC: It's no problem, you shouldn't post if you don't feel like it. Also, congrats on the WWC victory! Your story was my favourite, but I didn't vote cos I only read like five of them.

    ~~~~~
    Dianne was cleaning her glasses when the Ekans reared up behind her. Luckily, she heard my shout, and with the reflexes of a pro, spun and detached a Poke Ball from her belt and held it out in front of her. Her glasses fell onto the thick grass, completely avoiding damage.
    "Don't come any closer," she said warningly, but I had the feeling she didn't really know what was going on.
    The Ekans tilted its head to the side, and backed up a bit. It stuck its tongue out of its mouth and moved it slightly in a repeating cycle, reminding me a little bit of a panting puppy. Apparently, it hadn't been planning to attack Dianne - it was just friendly and curious.
    "Everything is alright, Dianne," I said to her, moving closer to the Ekans. It looked at me, but it seemed to be more interested in Dianne. "It's just a friendly little Ekans. Do you want to try and capture it?"
