I was stuck in my office, for the fifth time this week. Even my Gliscor was bored, and he normally finds something to entertain himself, often at the expense of others. He hung from the hat stand, swaying back and forth.

I looked through the paperwork that was piling up on my desk. Then, I saw something that I had missed. A park application! It was dated last week, too. I laughed at myself for the situation I had put myself in. Of course I hadn't looked hard enough to find the one thing that would get me out of this Outpost.

"C'mon, Gliscor!" I shouted, startling the FlyScorp Pokemon out of it's boredom. "We've got ourselves a park run!"

Gliscor was flying by my side in record time. We stepped out into the hallway, and down to the main lobby. There weren't many people there. In fact, it was almost entirely empty. I talked briefly to the receptionist. She was even more bored than I had been. I sat down on one of the slightly worn chairs in the room, Gliscor flying about next to me. I glanced around a bit. Even the room seemed bored, if that was even possible.

The bell rang at the door and I looked up. I was hardly surprised to see Alex, a fellow Ranger, there.

"So this is what you do on your day off?" I joked. "Ready to head out?"

Alex slowly walked down the small gravel track, spiralling down the face of Mt. Deckbi. He had just finished escorting a trainer through the mountain and was making his way back to the Ranger HQ. It had been a good haul for the trainer, as they managed to capture a Drilbur and Vulpix. Alex slowly took a breather, sitting down on a small boulder at the side of the track. He brushed his hand across his face, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He glanced across the horizon and noticed a small building perched behind the forest with the sign 'HQ' erupting from building. Alex sighed and remembered that a pile of work awaited him in that building. He picked up his bag and slung it over his shoulders, trekking down the gravel path.

Alex stood outside the Ranger HQ and looked up at the large rotating sign. "It's about time I had some fun." Alex fumbled with his phone and sent a quick text. He then opened the doors of the building and noticed another ranger standing beside the receptionist.

"So this is what you do on your day off?" He joked. "Ready to head out?"

"Oh that was quick," Alex smiled. "Yeah sure, lets go to the lakes."

Alex looked at me, startled by my sudden appearance.

"Oh that was quick," he smiled. "Yeah sure, lets go to the lakes."

"All right," I nodded. "Let's head to the jeep."

The park jeeps were old and were in dire need of a paint job, but they worked. At least most of the time. We hopped into one which had been painted by some Ranger to look like the jeeps from Jurassic Park. I smiled to myself and drove off, Alex in the passenger seat beside me and my Gliscor hanging from the jeep's roll-bars above us.

After a short drive, we wound up at a small Ranger outpost. I parked the jeep beside a few others beside the outpost. We got out and I led Alex over, past the Ranger place, to the piers out over the first lake. The sun was out, beating down on us, as well as scorching the once-muddy ground and making the lake almost blinding. Gliscor was a tad uncomfortable, preferring dark environments. He turned to me and I nodded, pulling out two Pokeballs. One sucked him inside and the other replaced him with my Feraligatr. I pulled down my flight goggles, tinting the world orange, but blocking most of the sun's harsh rays. This summer was hotter than normal.

I looked over to Alex, seeing how he was doing. Something caught my eye, however. There was the distinct shape of a Pelipper sitting on one of the pier's posts, right behind Alex. I pointed to it.

"Our first encounter!" I said. "Want a Pelipper?"

"All right," Domonic nodded, "let's head to the Jeep."

Alex drew a sigh of relief. He was glad that he wasn't being sucked into one of the old broken teleporters. The memories of those uncomfortable journeys, your guts being turned inside out and your head thrown around a small area. Alex followed Domonic towards the spare Jeep located and hopped inside. The Great Lakes weren't that far away from the Ranger HQ, so it wouldn't take long to drive there. Alex sat in the from with Domonic and watched as his Gliscor sat on the top of the roll-bars. They rolled down the lane, leading towards the Great Lakes.

Domonic turned into a small lane, which lead towards a small Ranger Outpost. Domonic halted the Jeep and hopped out. Alex followed suit and quickly noticed the the sun bearing down.

Alex had lost focused when all of a sudden, Domonic started to poke Alex, grabbing his attention.

"Our first encounter!" He said. "Want a Pelipper?"

Alex shrugged his shoulders and replied, "No thanks, if we can't escape, I'll just buy a Pokedoll." Alex then took a small diskplayer out from his bag and slotted in the Staryu Disk.

    $7,500 - 500$?

(( @gmandiddy; my dice seem to like Staryu...))

"No thanks," Alex said with a shrug. "If we can't escape, I'll just buy a Pokedoll."

"I don't think you need to," I told him. "That Pelipper looks really tired out. Must be the sun."

Sure enough, the pelican Pokemon just sat there, on the pier. This unusually hot weather was doing something to the wild Pokemon in this area, I was sure of it. While the Pelipper was busy doing nothing and, in general, sitting there, Alex popped in a voice disc. The light, tinkling sound of a Staryu echoed out across the lake. It was eerily beautiful, there was no sound in the entire area save for the voice disc.

That silence was broken by a small splash. A Staryu had popped up out of the water, making small waves on the otherwise calm shore. It made a sound like a string of small bells crashing to the ground, then started spinning rapidly towards us. The Pelipper, who must've been asleep or something, sensed danger and flew off, far away from the impending battle.

"Look!" I shouted, stating the obvious once again. "Staryu's attacking!"

Pokemon didn't usually respond to voice discs this fast, but sometimes strange things happen. Be careful what you wish for!

Alex was reaching into his backpack ready to lift out a small pink doll. They granted a free escape from any wild Pokemon in the Safari Park, they were quite useful in some circumstances. However there are different dolls for different Pokemon. For example there is a doll with a small compartment with Pokemon food in. It’s used for the small Pokemon who cannot carry the doll or play with it. There were some dolls that tried to spook the wild Pokemon by smashing it hands together and producing a piercing sound. However Alex’s favourite doll was the one that Pokemon would usually take away and act like it was one of its offspring. He remembered seeing a wild Ninetales pick off with a doll and scampered into the bushes. Later on in the run, we ran into the same Ninetales and noticed that it placed the doll in between the two Vulpix babies.

Alex was about to hand over the doll when suddenly Domonic outstretched his hand and stopped his movements. The tall Pelipper opened out his wings and screeched into the silent wind. Alex could see trails of sweat dripping down his head and flowing down his white soft fur. It seemed that the sun was not only effecting sweat glands of Alex, but also the sweat glands of Pelipper. Despite Pelipper being a flying Pokemon, Pelipper needed to bathe once and a while or else it would simply overheat. Domonic looked at Alex and said, "I don't think you need to. That Pelipper looks really tired out. It must be the sun’s heat"

The Pelipper simply remain on its perch and looked up into the sky. Alex started to wonder if Pokemon knew the effects of being out in the sun all day does to you. Soon that Pelipper would become overheated and would start to suffer from dehydration. However Alex turned his attention away from the Pelipper and placed the withdrawn doll back into the bag. After scavenging around, Alex pulled out a medium sized Pokeplayer. On every run that Alex goes on, he always brings his player, whether it was to play music or attract Pokemon. He withdrew a CD called ‘BoogyFever’ and inserted a disk labelled ‘Staryu’. The disk started to spin around and load. Then suddenly, a mysterious cry erupted from the speakers. The light, tinkling sound of Staryu’s cry echoed across the lakes surface. From the first time Alex brought the player, he had been quite successful with it. He managed to attract a wild Cottonee on his first encounter, over at the Botanic Gardens. It seemed the disk worked again as a second Cottonee suddenly appeared, lured in by the digital cry. It wasn’t as successful as Alex wanted it to be on his other runs, however this time Alex hoped that the luck of was on his side.

Then all of a sudden, the silence was broken by a splash. Alex pivoted his body around anti-clokwise and stared out across the Great Lakes. A small golden star floated on the water’s edge, creating small waves which dispersed outwards. Then all of a sudden, the small golden star flipped over. A large shiny red orb lay in the centre of the star, protected by a gold plate attached to the main skeleton. Alex quickly identified the creature and a warm fuzzy sensation flowed through his body. A small smirk surfaced on his lips and he turned around to the PokePlayer. It seemed that the small machine had worked again, delivering the Pokemon that he so desperately wanted. Outside of taking trainers through the park, Alex was devoted to water Pokemon started to collect them. He had a lot of rare Pokemon, however Staryu was one Pokemon that he had his eye on for a while. Staryu evolved into Starmie, which had the power and speed to cause a lot of damage and also be a nuisance to most teams. Alex looked back at the Pokemon and watched as it started to spin around, advancing towards the bank. Out of the corner of his eye, Alex noticed that Pelipper must’ve been spooked by this sudden movement and took off into the warm sky. Now Staryu was close enough to the bank, close enough to start a Pokemon battle.

Domonic quickly noted Staryu’s advancement and warned Alex that Staryu was up for a fight. Alex knew that this was the Staryu for him. It had that determination and energetic approach to battling, something which Alex looked for in a Pokemon. Alex quickly took of his jacket and chucked it to the ground. He took a couple steps back, so that there was a good distance between him and Stayu. He didn’t want to be too close to the battle when it unfolded. The sun’s rays were beating down on Alex, he knew that the sun could play a vital role in this battle.

Alex reached into his pocket and pulled out a Pokeball. He threw it into the air and watched as a large green lizard bursted from its Pokeball. The Lizard Pokemon quickly landed on the ground and looked across towards Alex. Alex knew that Sceptile was a Modest nature, and therefore refrained from doing anything fancy. His game was to hit them hard and simple. Staryu was still floating on the surface, bobbing up and down as the waves passed over its body.

“Alright Sceptile, how’s it going?” Alex asked his Sceptile. It was always important to keep a friendly relationship between your Pokemon, as it gives them confidence in battles. Sceptile nodded and turned around so that it was facing the lake’s surface and Staryu. Alex glanced up at the sky and watched as the sun still shone down.

“Sceptile, use Energy Ball, followed by Leaf Blade” Alex commanded.

Sceptile slowly started to rotate his hands in a clockwise motion in front of his body. A small green orb slowly appeared, growing in size as Sceptile feeds the orb with energy. Staryu was a water Pokemon which meant that it was weak to Grass attacks. Energy Ball was a perfect move to start of with as it tests the strength of Staryu, because it’s not too powerful or too weak. Leaf Blade is a move that could cause some damage, since Sceptile’s attacking power is very powerful.

Alex took a couple steps back, leaving enough space between these two Pokemon. Staryu’s going to need all the help it needs.

In response to the incoming Staryu, Alex swiftly let his Sceptile from its PokeBall. He greeted it briefly, then gave an order to the green, lizard-like Pokemon.

“Sceptile, use Energy Ball, followed by Leaf Blade,” he commanded.

His Pokemon nodded. Nice and simple, just as the Sceptile liked it. It began to move its arms in a circular motion, gathering energy from nature. While the Staryu skated forward, creating heavy splashes along the otherwise crystal-clear lake water's surface, the Sceptile looked calm. Soon, it had amassed enough energy. Several, glowing green globs of goo shot out at a speed that would make a bullet jealous. They rocketed forward, smashing into the Staryu and breaking across the star Pokemon's sleek surface. The Staryu made a noticeable falter, but it kept going. It was at too great a speed for the Energy Ball attack to stop it.

The Staryu, still rushing forwards at breakneck speed, began to gather water below it, until the pressure of the water and the Pokemon's massive speed made it go airborne. Alex's Sceptile was ready, and leapt into action, arm-blades glowing a bright green.

The two Pokemon met, mid-air. I couldn't quite see what happened, but it appeared that Sceptile's Leaf Blade had hit the Staryu's Surf and both had suffered damage.

Sure enough, Alex's Sceptile did a graceful, but simple flip backwards onto the edge of the pier. Staryu fell back into the water, in sharp contrast to the Sceptile. There was a large splash, followed by an angry tinkling noise, like broken glass being poured off a balcony. The Staryu was down, but definitely not out yet. The Pokemon were followed down from the air by all the water that had been carried with the Staryu. It splashed all over the pier, getting me, Alex and the Sceptile at least a little damp. The piers were a different story, however.

"Careful!" I called out to Alex over the din of Staryu's angry voice. "the pier will be slippery now!"

“Sceptile, use Energy Ball, followed by Leaf Blade,” Alex commanded

Sceptile slowly started to rotate his hands in a clockwise motion in front of his body. A small green orb slowly appeared, growing in size as Sceptile feeds the orb with energy. Alex slowly leaned forward, anticipating a nervous battle. Both Pokemon each had their advantages. Sceptile had the type advantage meaning that some of Staryu’s moves would be ineffective against him. However Staryu was surrounded by water and it was able to enhance his performance and attack power with the water. The orb started to glow, flickering like a broken light bulb. Small green strands danced around inside, twisting and bending around other small green strands; creating the glowing effect.

Sceptile watched as Staryu slowly started to back away from the grass bank. Was it scared of Sceptile? Then it stopped and started to progress forward. The tips of the ends glided through the cool lake surface. Sceptile was clam and halted its supply of energy to the orb. He held the orb in his two palms and waited until the right moment. Staryu was approaching, creating a small wave behind its back. Sceptile quickly fired off the orb towards the approaching Staryu. The orb splintered into small green globs of goo. The goo scattered out like a shell of a shotgun and cascaded towards Staryu. Alex knew that this technique was very reliable and accurate, however it lacked the power since most of the goo is spread out of a large area. The goo slowed down Staryu however it didn’t stop it completely. Staryu continued to advance towards Sceptile with the small wave increasing in size. Sceptile had to act quickly and launched itself off from the bank and into the air.

“Ok Sceptile, use Leaf Blade,” Alex cried.

Sceptile outstretched his hands and suddenly the two leaves attached to his arm started to glow. Then they suddenly grew in size and formed the shape of a blade. Sceptile crossed both arms over and formed an ‘X’ shape with the two blades. The wave trailing behind Staryu was now bigger. The wave coiled over Staryu and cascaded towards Sceptile. Sceptile plummeted through the air and collided with the wave. The collision created a huge excess of energy and catapulted both Sceptile and Staryu back. Sceptile landed on a pier, stretching across into the lake and watched as Staryu surfaced the lake’s surface. As a result from the collision, thousands of rain drops fell from the sky and landed on the pier. It was wet meaning that it would be quite slippery.

"Careful!" Domonic called out to Alex over the din of Staryu's angry voice. "The pier will be slippery now!"

Alex knew that if Sceptile performed a running move, Sceptile would lose balance and fall over. Sceptile had to use a Special Attack from distance.

“Sceptile, I want you to leap back onto the bank. While you’re in mid-air, I want you to use Hidden Power. Then when you land on the bank, use X-Scissor.”

Alex thought fast, then ordered a move. The Staryu could attack again at any time.

“Sceptile, I want you to leap back onto the bank," Alex ordered his Pokemon. "While you’re in mid-air, I want you to use Hidden Power. Then when you land on the bank, use X-Scissor.”

The Sceptile gave him a strange look, at first. Then, it shrugged. I thought quickly. Pokemon with a Modest nature didn't really like to do clever things or variations. They didn't even like to use added moves. I watched closely to see what Alex's Sceptile would do. The Staryu had resurfaced and looked like it was preparing an attack. Sceptile would have to act now.

I was surprised. The Sceptile took it's own initiative. It fired a bolt of green energy, directly hitting the startled Staryu. It had actually used Hidden Power! Then, the Sceptile leapt onto the bank, ready to attack the Staryu once again. The Staryu seemed as puzzled as I was. While it hadn't used the attack mid-air, it had certainly met Alex half-way. However, the Staryu made little time to adjust for the change in the Sceptile's position. Instead, it charged ahead to the beach. As it neared the shore, it leapt into the air and crated several glowing stars around it. A Swift attack! These bright stars, as well as the Staryu, barreled towards the Sceptile. It looked like the grass Pokemon would be overwhelmed, but I watched, awestruck, as Sceptile's bladed arms glowed a light, lime green color. He batted away several of the stars, knocking them into the sand, and was hit by only a few of them. Then, it and the Staryu collided for the second time. Sceptile slid back a bit, but had succeeded in knocking the Staryu back into the water.

"Impressive!" I told Alex. "Your bond with Sceptile is amazingly strong. But it'll still have taken some damage."

Alex knew he was asking a lot from Sceptile, knowing that it went against anything Sceptile believed in. He was programmed to fight simplistically; it was in his blood, his DNA. Alex was asking Sceptile to do something outside his limits, something Sceptile couldn’t process. His mind was telling him to attack, attack and attack. To deal as much damage as possible and not waste any energy performing stylistic flicks or turns. Sceptile hesitated and glanced down at the soaked pier. Why his master did not want him to him to use a move straight away, was it dangerous? Sceptile scanned his eyes towards the lake. There was no sign of Staryu. It seemed that the last attack dealt a lot of damage, maybe too much?

Alex could only watch as Sceptile stood frozen on the soaked pier. Alex feared that Sceptile couldn’t perform the jump back. His legs trembled under the pressure of performing a miracle. If the Staryu resurfaced, Sceptile was now a sitting duck. Then out of the corner of Alex’s eye, he noticed some bubbles floating up towards the surface. It was time.

Sceptile could see it too, the small bubbles slowly made their way up towards the surface. Then an opaque orange colour appeared metres away from the surface. Staryu appeared and stared towards the wooden pier. Sceptile had to move, and fast. Staryu started to glow in a bright white colour. Sceptile was a sitting duck. It was only seconds before Staryu would attack.

Sceptile quickly acted and opened his large green palms. Energy surged down his arms and into his hands, filling the space with a large green orb. Sceptile quickly fired the orb towards Staryu. The orb travelled through the air and within metres of impacting against Staryu, splintered into several small pieces. It looked like shrapnel from a grenade, except this shrapnel was green and heading towards a surprised Staryu. The green orbs collided into Staryu, inflicted some serious damage to Staryu. Alex stood stunned as he watched Sceptile leap into the air. He had altered Alex’s orders to match his code, his rules. Sceptile landed on the bank with no trouble and fixed his eyes on his opponent.

Staryu quickly recovered from the attack and started a move of its own. The small starfish Pokemon started to speed through the water, headlong towards Sceptile. ‘What is this Pokemon doing?’ Alex thought. Alex knew that Staryu wasn’t a land Pokemon and the moment it was on land, it was defenceless like fish out of water. The height of the lake started to decrease as Staryu got closer to the shore. Then as soon as Staryu reached the shore line, it catapulted it’s self towards Sceptile.

‘This is suicide!’ Alex cried. Staryu was now defenceless against Sceptile and the moment it landed on the grass, it was game. However this Staryu wasn’t giving up without a fight. Large golden stars were fired out from the large red orb in the centre of Staryu’s body. Sceptile moved fast and extended his arms again. The leaves stood up and started to glow, exactly like before. Sceptile waited for the right time to strike, there was no point striking too early, it wouldn’t deal enough damage. Staryu bombarded towards Sceptile, firing large golden stars towards him.
    Now.
Sceptile sliced his arms down, intersecting at the middle of a cross shape. The Staryu was sent flying back, damaged by the suicidal move. However it didn’t all work to plan. Sceptile was now nursing some injuries of his own, slashing from the shooting suriken-like-stars. Sceptile had waited too longer and that action made the damage even worse. Alex had to keep Sceptile at a distance away from Staryu.

"Impressive!" Domonic told Alex. "Your bond with Sceptile is amazingly strong. But it'll still have taken some damage."

Indeed it did. Staryu quickly resurfaced to the water, however the damage that it’s sustained during this battle started to show. Alex had to end this now or else someone would get hurt, badly.

Alex searched through his bag and withdrew a small canister with the words ‘Soothing Fragrance’ written across it. He knew that this canister would make it easier to catch a Pokemon, as it simply attracted the Pokemon to going inside the Pokeball. He took a SuperBall from his belt and sprayed the canister across the ball. He stood up and held the soaked ball in his right hand and shouted, “Sceptile, use Leaf Storm. That should do enough damage to let us capture it.”

Alex watched as Sceptile started to gather up energy in order to perform the move. Hopefully within the next couple of minutes, Alex would have a Staryu to add to his lineup. Staryu was the only Pokemon he was currently here for and if he captured the small Pokemon, he would ask his ranger politely if he could leave. However Staryu wasn’t his at this given time, not yet.

@GliscorMan; Move, then throw ball. If captured I would like to leave.

    ( @gmandiddy; Now done.))

Alex looked at the scene of the battle, taking it in. He pondered for a moment and, with his Sceptile on watch for the Staryu, quickly dug around in his backpack. I saw him pull out a Super Ball and a container labeled "Soothing Fragrance". He popped open the container and smeared some sweet-smelling stuff all over the Pokeball. I nodded. That would make it slightly easier to catch the rampaging Staryu. He hefted the ball, ready to throw it at his quarry. It looked slimy with the Fragrance all over it, but he didn't seem to mind.

“Sceptile, use Leaf Storm," Alex shouted. "That should do enough damage to let us capture it.”

Sceptile nodded and, carefully and expertly, began to gather the massive amount of energy it needed to fire off the Leaf Storm attack. Most of the time, the energy required tired out the user so much, further attacks were almost reduced by half. This would probably be fine, though; Alex was planning to throw the Super Ball as soon as the attack was launched, preventing any harsh side-effects.

Soon, the Staryu had surfaced and began a breakneck pace towards the shore, all three of us waiting for it. As it neared, fast as a speed boat and leaving a wake behind it, the Staryu began to rise out of the water, like a water skier or wake boarder. I didn't know what it was planning to do, but considering it's past attacks, it wouldn't be anything less than daring. Sceptile kept calm and, when the Staryu was at the closest it could get without causing problems, fired off a massive blast of green energy. As the energy neared the target, in a bright glowing cone, the energy gathered into shapes that could almost be described as leaves. So that was why it was called a Leaf Storm.

The Staryu, however, either didn't care or hadn't seen the attack performed before. The razor-sharp leaves whipped about it, causing obviously painful scratches across the Staryu's shell-like face. The Staryu began to lose momentum. It did a flip, like a race car being knocked into the air, and that was when Alex saw his opportunity. He chucked the Super Ball as far hard as he could, towards the disoriented Staryu. Mid-air, the ball opened, sucking the star Pokemon inside with a flash of red light. I thought I heard a ping, and I could guaranteed that I could see the little red light that indicates a successful capture. Unfortunately, it fell into the lake.

I looked at the surface of the water with a pained expression on my face, then I had an idea. I released my Raticate from his Pokeball and told him to dive down into the water looking for it. Raticate hastily leapt into the water. It was a good thing that most Raticate liked to swim. It'd be bad if the newly captured Pokemon wound up underwater. I gave a shrug to Alex. He understood, but he was slightly impatient. I could tell that he wanted to get out of the park quickly, his new Staryu in tow. Shortly, Raticate resurfaced, Super Ball carefully lodged in it's mouth. It spat it out into my hand. The good thing was that most of the lake water washed away the slime from the Fragrance. The bad news was that it had Raticate spit all over it. Oh well.

"All right, I'll keep this for now," I told Alex, gingerly covering the Super Ball with a piece of spare cloth, then putting it into my backpack. "I guess we'll head back to the Outpost, if that's what you want."

He nodded, so I lead him back (a short few steps down the pier, really) and we hopped back into the Jurrasic Park-themed Jeep.
