Ranger Ivy Frost

Ivy came in through the double doors to the Main Outpost with a sigh. She had been all the way out in Oktori, rearranging one of the storage sheds out there. It had been a little tougher work today. The mountain was cold and windy with snow, and even in the shelter of the small building she still shivered. Some of the equipment had been frozen to the ground, so she had to work a crowbar under them to actually move them around. It had taken way too long, but eventually she got into the rhythm.

That all stopped when she had received the phone call though.

One of the secretaries working the main desk had given her a call when she discovered a run that hadn't been claimed yet. It had been almost a week since the application was sent, and that was far too long for a Trainer to wait when there were plenty of Rangers around. It seemed though, that her colleagues were taking a break or something, since nobody snatched it up. She told the secretary, Ashley, she thought her name was, to send an okay through the line and have the Trainer meet her at the Woods Outpost.

She really disliked stopping in the middle of a project.

The office was pretty quiet, and she didn't see many people around. One person she did see though, as she crossed through the building toward the main work area, was Jack. The Ranger was leaning back in the rolling chair at his desk with his arms crossed in his black sweatshirt. His eyes were closed, and the paperwork in front of him remained undone.

She shook her head. Sleeping on the job.

“Hey, lazybones,” she called, satisfied to see him sit up suddenly and blink the sleep away from his eyes. “Why don't you do some work around here? Your paperwork needs finishing, and everyone missed a run that's been sitting here almost a week. Or do you need help finding something else?”

He had just got back from helping his family move countries, so she had let the first few days he was back go easy. Now though, he should be plenty fine and ready to get back to work. She needed to start running a tight ship.

Jack shook his head, his brown ponytail flopping from side to side with the motion. She couldn't help but smile as he reached for his pen.

A purple form came padding from the hall where the private offices were, and she was happy to see Haji, her Espeon, coming toward her. “Oh good, I was just coming to get you. Ready to go to the Woods?”

The Psychic type nodded and got close, preparing them for transport. “That better be done when I get back,” she added, looking at Jack. Then, the air around her shifted, and they disappeared out of the office.

The world came back into focus at the Outpost near the Woods entrance. Finding the wood bench next to the door, she took a seat with Haji beside her and waited for their Trainer to arrive.

OOC: I accidentally put Togekiss's nickname as her gender and viceversa. So yah, her name isn't Female. Thanks for taking my Park Run though.

"I'll make my way to the Woods then... mhm. Alright, thanks," said Jake as he exited the Maplestory game he had been playing all week, in anticipation for the call from the National Park. After ending the call, he threw the phone into his backpack which had already been sitting in front of his doorway. Grabbing his bag, he ran outside and chucked a Pokéball into the air.

Out of the shimmering red and white sphere, emerged an ebony white Flying type Pokémon. She had red and blue specks splattered across her chest and giant grin stretched across her face. She knew by the excited look on Jake's face that they were about to embark on a new journey.

"It's time to go, Lulu. This time we'll be going to the Woods." Jake showed the hovering Togekiss a map of the National Park and pointed at the Woods Area.

Lulu flew in front of Jake and invited him to hang on to her by letting out a quick shrill. Jake followed orders and hung onto Lulu as she jetted off toward the Woods.

After a seemingly short flight, Jake caught a glimpse of a girl and her partner Pokémon waiting at the entrance to the Woods. He motioned to Togekiss to fly toward the gate and she obeyed, moving her wings slightly to start the descent. Upon reaching the ground, Jake returned Lulu to her Pokeball and ran over to the Ranger.

“Hey, my name’s Jacob T. Hanson, but you can call me Jake. I believe you are…” he looked discreetly down at some scribbles on his palm. “...Ranger Ivy.”​

Haji alerted her to a fluctuation in the air, and after a few seconds, she felt the energy stirring in the air too. She had gotten better at sensing things in general, though it was nowhere near becoming second habit like it was to the Espeon. Maybe one day it would.

A Trainer on a Togekiss swooped in then, and the grass flattened with the gusts of wings as the bird landed, blowing up a little dust. The red and blue speckled Flying type was returned to her Pokéball as the Trainer started to make his way over to her.

She stood up as he approached, holding out a hand to shake. Haji got down too, quiet as ever, and stood by her side, just barely touching her leg.

“Hey, my name's Jacob T. Hanson,but you can call me Jake,” he said. “I believe you are...” He looked down to his hand, trying to be sneaky about it, but Haji picked up on it and clued her in to what he was doing. She just smiled. “... Ranger Ivy,” he finished.

She nodded. “That's right, Ivy Frost. Nice to meet you, Jake. It's been a long time since I've been to the Woods, but I promise not to get us lost,” she joked.

With that, she turned and headed toward the entrance to the woods, a path enclosed with rows of trees on either side. The last time she had been here was with a Trainer that was a little wilder in the instinct sort of sense. He acted a lot like his Pokémon. He also had this habit of knocking her over all the time. She hoped she wasn't going to repeat that.

They continued down through the dark, the tree canopy covering up the spots where the sun tried to shine through. It got lighter as they went though, as the thick pines thinned out into the more stringy trees with the smaller trunks. There was a split path up here, and she was going to ask her Trainer which way he wanted to go. One way was more light-filled, probably due to the more docile Pokémon in that area. The other path was darker, suggesting a challenge.

The made it to the junction, and just as she was about to open her mouth, the bushes rustled on the darker side. She asked Haji to help her sense what it was, but all he replied with was, “Darkness.” He did tense a little though. She could feel it in his mind and see it in the way he crouched slightly and dug is paws into the dirt.

Then, a cream and purple creature emerged from the foliage, its claws sinking deep into the soil as it stepped out onto the path. It was almost cat-like, but the large, bushy tail flipped over its back alerted her to what it was.

“Look, a Skuntank. Any interest in that?” she asked. Luckily, there was no scent yet. Hopefully there wouldn't be at all.

Jake followed Ranger Ivy closely as they started into the dense forest. He had expected to see more Pokemon playing in the trees and bushes. Instead, the woods were quite the opposite of Jake's expectations. The breeze that occasionally dodged through the crowded trees was the only sound that the woods made. Besides that, the only thing that could be heard was the footsteps of him and his partner.

After walking a bit, Ranger Ivy came to a stop at a fork in the road. One path seemed dark and boring, while the other seemed to be cheery and bright. Jake didn’t really have any desire to go down the dark path seeing as the reason he came to the Woods rather than Mt. Oktori was to get away from the dark, cave-like environment. (He would later discover that he had intended on going to the Botanic Gardens. But for now, he was still optimistic.)

Jake was about to suggest they take the sunny path when a giant skunk Pokemon jumped out of the bushes along the path and plopped down right in front of them. Jake’s imagination got the best of him and caused him to choke on an imaginary odor.

“Look, a Skuntank. Any interest in that?” asked Ranger Ivy.

“Uh, not really. My roommate would probably kill me if I brought that home and besides, I don’t really like Skuntank that much,” replied Jake, holding his shirt over his nose, revealing his ripped abdomen. “Could we possibly get out of here? Maybe we could go down that way?” As he finished, he took his right elbow and pointed it toward the brighter path, hoping to get away from the ticking stink bomb as soon as possible. ​

“Uh, not really,” he said. “My roommate would probably kill me if I brought that home, and besides, I don't really like Skuntank much.” Fair enough, she thought. Then he continued. “Could we possibly get out of here? Maybe we could go down that way?” He pointed toward the brighter path with the small sun rays and the light breeze. That sounded good to her.

“Sure thing,” she said. She was a bit tired of caves and such, seeing how every other run she accepted seemed to be going to Deckbi these days. The air was much cleaner here, and there were less rocks. She was glad for the change in scenery.

She glanced down at the Skuntank, hoping it would let them pass. She tried to smile at it, but she wasn't sure if it was working. The skunk was a bit unreadable, but at least there was still no bad smell. It looked at them, and then sighed, curling up in the middle of the patch where there was a small sun spot, seemingly falling asleep.

It looked like it wasn't going to bother them. That was nice. Sometimes Park Pokémon didn't like to leave Trainers alone, and that was difficult if the Trainer didn't want to battle. There were always dolls to buy to distract them, but sometimes that got spendy.

They continued down the brighter path, enjoying the light breeze and the small bits of sun that shone through the canopy. The trees on either side of the path were thinner and more spaced out, leaving the leaf-filled forest floor visible. Sticks and small stones dotted the inside, and occasionally a Pokémon like Caterpie or Weedle could be spied among them.

There was a fallen tree up ahead, one that had been there for a while. It's trunk was a bit wider, about the width of a basketball. A light tapping noise could be heard from the other side, and they went to check it out.

A small pink ball with floppy yellow-tipped ears and toes was behind it, idly making noise with a stick it was holding. It hit the fallen tree in different spots, and it sort of sounded like it was trying to make a song. It caught sight of them with its dotted eyes, and it smiled, hitting the tree again, like saying 'look what I can do'.

Ivy smiled at it and then turned to Jake. “Any interest in a Whismur?”
