OOC: Sorry about the delay – my exams go until Friday, so I’ll be posting very infrequently during that period, but after that I’ll be back to being insanely active.

I shuddered as I waited outside the gate to Mt Oktori. I hated the cold - that was why I usually managed to find a way out of Oktori assignments. But all the other Rangers were out on runs today, and the Trainer that was going through had been on the waiting list for ages. The thought of the Trainer reminded me of my duties and I pulled out my PDA and accessed the Trainer's file by gently flicking the touchscreen.

Hmmm, that's an interesting choice of Pokemon, I thought. The Trainer's name was Derian, and he was bringing a Lapras and a Jynx with him. The Lapras' weakness to Fighting-types and the Jynx's strengths didn't really match up with many of the Pokemon found on Mt Oktori, but that didn't really mean anything. Skilled Trainers overcame type weaknesses all the time. Furthermore, I was glad to see an Arcanine on the list, not ANOTHER FREAKING INFERNAPE.

The icy wind picked up, and I wrapped my scarf tighter around my neck before slipping my PDA back into my pocket. I considered summoning Ignite, my Houndoom, just get some feeling back in my hands but I decided against it. Ignite was just as fond of the cold as I was. In the end, I jammed my hands deep into my pockets and leaned against the wall next to the gate, waiting for Derian to show up.

A young man walked up, making a steady pace likely due to the cold. He was very likely the trainer the ranger had been waiting on, as few else would dare brave the cold on a day like this.

He was well bundled, a thick winter coat covered most of his body. His legs were covered in thick pants, and appeared to be doubled up with at least two pairs as he lacked any real pants suited for the sort of climate he was going to be exploring. He didn't have a hat, but he had a large hood from his coat that he was wearing.

What you could see of his hair was blond, and he was only a short five and a half feet tall. He had three Pokéballs strapped to his waist, and an average sized backpack that was suited for the climate. He was shivering, holding his arms as he walked.

I covered my eyes with my hands, and I finally sighted my Trainer. He looked like a short but stocky young man. As he got closer, I saw that (at least partly) his stockiness was because he was wearing multiple layers of clothing. I would have done that, except that my position as a Ranger required me to be agile and mobile at all times, and I didn't want a Trainer being wounded simply because I couldn't reach my equipment in time.

I turned to the gate, and I scratched my thumb on one of my teeth, making a small cut. A tiny bit of blood welled out of my thumb, and I pressed it down onto a partially hidden scanpad on the gate. The scanpad verified my DNA and the gate swung open, moving slowly as it pushed a snowdrift out of its way. I picked up a little bit of snow from the ground and used it to clean the datapad. When I was done, the Trainer was standing behind me.

"Hi there, and welcome to the National Park," I said to him, "my name is Chainy and I'll be taking you through Mt Oktori today."

I never asked for Trainer names in case they didn't want to give them. Besides, I knew it already. I led the Trainer through the gate and onto the plateau surrounding the relatively small mountain range. The gate's motion sensors read us as having entered the Park, and so they automatically closed with a clang.

"Nice to meet you."

His voice was somewhat restrained, and calm. He was social at times, but in almost all situations he would be timid at first. It would take him a while before he'd ease up, but when that would happen it was sometimes hard to get him to shut up.

"Ouch, you have to do that every time?"

He'd always hated needles and the like much like most people, especially those things that would prick your finger to check your blood sugar and other things. Though biting your finger to make it bleed wasn't quite as bad, he still shuddered at the thought of having to do that on a regular basis.

He could recall one time in particular when he was really young, when at a doctors visit he protested really strongly to getting his blood checked. He was normally sedate about things, but that was the first and nearly only time he'd ever pulled what could be considered a tantrum. It wasn't his proudest moment, the doctor used the example of a baby that had it done moments before to show that it wasn't remotely painful in an attempt to calm him and get him to submit. It was of course, incredibly painful.

OOC: LOL I enter the Park a different way every time, but this is the first time someone has ever said anything.

"Nice to meet you," Derian said. I noticed he didn't offer his name, but that didn't bother me. As we moved forward, into the gently falling snow, I pulled out a bandage and wrapped it around my finger. Derian watched with a slight look of sympathy on his face.

"Ouch, you have to do that every time?" he asked.

"Not if I can avoid it," I grunted. I didn't like bleeding, but it was better than being stabbed by a needle.

We moved onwards, towards the mountain. The slope was only gentle yet, but we'd both have sweat out share by the time this expedition was over. I heard some slight scraping noises, so I looked to the side. I smiled as I saw a young Meditite making a snowman. It looked over to us and called a greeting before returning to the job at hand. I didn't want to disturb the creature, but it was Ranger policy to offer all encountered Pokemon to the Trainer. But, battling wasn't the only way to capture a Pokemon...

"There's a Meditite over there," I said to Derian, pointing it out in case he hadn't seen it. "Are you interested in it? Perhaps an all-out battle might not be the way to go here. If it were me, I'd be nice to it. But it's up to you."

Derian had in fact wanted a Meditite for a while. They were one of the few Pokémon that were not ice that you could encounter in the harsh freezing climates. Plus despite their seemingly frail bodies, they packed remarkable power. Actually, Meditite was one of the reasons he had come to this mountain in the first place, beyond the bountiful ice Pokémon he hoped to collect.

Though it seemed somewhat unconventional, taking a different approach from battling seemed like a good option. Besides, if he could catch the Meditite without actually hurting it that would be nice.

Tossing one of his Pokéballs to the ground, the humanoid Pokémon Jynx emerged in a flash. She looked to Derian as if to say "Where's the battle at?", well accustomed to joining a fight at a moments notice.

"I don't want you to fight right now, Eisheth."

She looked puzzled at first, before spotting the young Meditite. The puzzled look was immediately replaced by a look of understanding.

"That's right, want to help Meditite with it's snowman?"

Jynx looked happy at this prospect. She was always happy to play with Pokémon as a change of pace from the usual battling.

She cautiously but confidently approached the little fighting-type, taking her time as not to startle it.

Derian looked happy to see the Meditite, and I knew he would be intelligent enought to understand my hint. I couldn't outright tell the Trainers what would be the best way to capture a Pokemon, but I could help them in the right direction.

Derian dropped a PokeBall into the snow, and his Jynx emerged in a white flash of light. Considering the ground was already white, this was hardly noticeable. The Jynx looked around, apparently a little confused at what was going on.

"I don't want you to fight right now, Eisheth," Derian said to the Jynx. She looked over at the Meditite with a puzzled look on her face, but it was soon replaced by one of understanding. Meanwhile, I was frowning. Whoever had digitalised my file had forgotten to include the Jynx's nickname. I quickly began correcting this.

"That's right, want to help Meditite with it's snowman?" Derian asked Eisheth. She nodded happily, and began trudging through the snow towards the Meditite. The Meditite looked up and smiled, waving us a greeting. The Jynx held up a pile of snow questioningly, and the Meditite bowed low.

Both Pokemon created a large snowman in the shape of a Machoke. Occasionally Eisheth would use her ice breath to make sharp icicles, and the Meditite would set its hands on fire to better carve through the packed snow. Finally, it was done. It looked quite good. The Meditite jumped up and down in happiness. It bowed again to the Jynx, and then ran up the mountain, waving for us to follow it.

"Do you want to?" I asked Derian. It was a silly question, but I had to ask.

“Absolutely!” It was intriguing where this could lead, and he had to know more. Working his way through the snow after the little Meditite, he almost slipped, barely catching himself. Jynx waddled along as well, making it’s way effortlessly through the snow: it’s natural habitat. Derian was happy with his decision to bring her along, bringing an Ice Pokémon to a snowy mountain had seemed like a good idea and so far it was.

The Meditite led us up the side of a small mountain. We didn't really have any trouble climbing up - this was the natural habitat of Meditite and Jynx, and I had a feeling that Derian knew his way around ice and show. I had to climb my way up, but it wasn't a huge problem - I was in fair physical shape. I wouldn't have minded having Buzz along, though - River Tam was a great teleporter, and a Deadpan Snarker to boot.

We were about a third of the way up when we reached a fair-sized plateau cut into the side of the mountain. Lots of gray stalactites hung from the ceiling, promising a grisly end to whoever yelled too loudly. The Meditite ran over to the middle of the plateau and then turned back to face us. It bowed, then struck a fighting pose and cried a challenge.

"That Meditite wants to battle you," I said to Derian. "Wanna try capturing it?"

“I was hoping we could avoid this, but if it wants a challenge it’ll get a challenge.” He had heard legends of the famous Xatu River, and the thought crossed his mind as well.

Derian nodded to Eisheth, and she knew what to do. He had always prepared his tactics in advance so he’d be on the same playing field as his wild opponent. Telling your Pokémon what to do can give the opponent the advantage, and he’d learned from this mistake in the past.
Jynx ran towards the Meditite, and feigned a slip on the ice. Falling forwards, it actually tumbled into a magnificent roll bringing it right up close to the Meditite, striking it. A cunning Fake Out.
Jynx promptly followed up by glaring at the little Meditite with an expression of pure malice, a harsh Mean Look. This battle would be interesting, for neither Pokémon had a type advantage on the other due to their secondary type.

OOC: Derian, for future reference you're not allowed to say the attacks hit. You can describe the attacks as they begin, but don't end it. Do that after my next post, when you know what happened.

“I was hoping we could avoid this, but if it wants a challenge it’ll get a challenge,” Derian said confidently.

"As a Fighting Pokemon, it probably wouldn't go down without a duel of some sort," I replied, "Meditite and Medicham in particular bind themselves to a very strict honour code."

Derian nodded at his Jynx, and immediately she moved towards the Meditite, but before she was within striking range she slipped on some ice. The Meditite's form slipped for a second as he became worried about the Pokemon that had recently become his friend. As his guard lowered momentarily, the Jynx suddenly righted itself through a somersault and landed a good slap on the Meditite, sending it flying backwards.

The Meditite managed to stay on its feet, though, and kept its eyes on the Jynx, which turned out to be a mistake. The Jynx's eyes started to glow white, and her hair rose up and whipped around like it was being controlled by a vicious wind. The Meditite looked a little scared, but it chopped it's arms down like it was performing a Karate Chop, sending a purple crescent of energy flying towards Eisheth.

As I was watching the battle, my phone beeped. I pulled it out - it was a message from Buzz. I opened it up, and began to grin as I read it.

To James;
Haha, I know right, but as a side note, you sound like a woman saying "perfect hourglass figure." Then again, whats new I guess. Buzz.

I sent a text back, chuckling as I imagined his reaction when he read it:

"That's a handy trick! You should try it sometime, Eisheth. But now's no time for idle words, hit it again as hard as you can with a beam of ice!"

Normally he would have ordered a fierce blizzard in this sort of locale, though given the circumstances, battling in a cave, an ice beam seemed the more reliable choice. He remembered sorely a time when Eisheth had used Blizzard in a very crucial moment, only to see it miss. But it all ended up okay in the end, he came out with the Rainbow badge(OOC note: not based on actual events).

Eisheth stood there, feet firmly planted on the ground (if Jynx even had feet, it was difficult to tell with their dress-like appearance) eyes still white with a terrible fury. The air seemed to grow still and silent for just a moment, and the small humanshape ice-type appeared tremendous at just that moment, before letting off a frigid cone of white energy. The beam seemed almost empowered by the cold environment, though this could have been just from the immense strength of the Pokémon.

The purple crescent of Psychic energy hit Eisheth, pushing her backwards, but she reached up with her hand and gripped the blade, managing to deflect it. Being a Psychic type herself, the Psycho Cut hadn't done much damage to her.

"That's a handy trick! You should try it sometime, Eisheth. But now's no time for idle words, hit it again as hard as you can with a beam of ice!" Derian called out.

The Jynx stood solidly on the ground and the snow began to whip around her in a frenzy, as opposed to falling gently like it was near me. The snowflakes began to swirl around her head and down her arms into her hands, which were extended and pointing towards the Meditite. As more and more snow flowed in front of her hands, it compressed into a ball that rotated quickly, preparing to burst.

The Medtite saw that its Psycho Cut hadn't done much damage, so it decided to get up close and personal. It began to run towards Eisheth, its arms trailing backwards as it did so. A small red light began to glow from its right hand, and I heard a small rushing sound as the red light ignited, becoming a flame. The fireball writhed around the Meditite's hand, leaving it unharmed, and hissing as random snowflakes that fell nearby were vaporized by the heat.

Eisheth's eyes went a pure white, and the Ice Beam left her hands, spreading outwards like a cone, reminding me of a shotgun blast. It was an interesting battle technique, emphasising coverage over damage. The cone blasted towards the Meditite, who flung out its left hand to protect itself from the incoming attack. The Ice Beam made contact, and for a second I thought it had picked up the Meditite and carried it away, but the Meditite burst out of the centre of the white cone and continued running towards Eisheth. Its left hand and arm were frozen in front of it, but it didn't worry about that. The small Fighting-type jumped into the air, and when it was at face level with Eisheth it rammed its fire-covered fist into the Psychic-type's cheek. Eisheth was thrown backwards by the sheer severity of the attack, spiraling through the air and landing in a snowdrift.

The Meditite grunted happily, pleased that this attack had had more effect. It then clasped its frozen arm with its flame-coated fist, melting the ice away using the remnants of its Fire Punch attack. If Eisheth was quick, she might be able to get a free shot in.
