I sat in the Outpost at the foot of Mount Oktori, rubbing my arms in a futile effort to keep warm. Someone had cranked the heater to its maximum setting not too long ago and as a result, the machine had crapped out. As a direct result, I was now freezing while I waited for my Trainer to appear.

My Gallade sat in the corner in a meditative pose, neither moving nor making a sound. He would have preferred to wait outside and use the time to train himself against bitter cold, but there was a mild snowstorm outside and that always caused temperatures to plummet. That didn't bother Dual, but I couldn't stand the thought of him out there. Any hardcore training he wanted to do he would have to do without me knowing of it.

Usually, I wouldn't have taken so many back-to-back runs but I heard that the Expedition request submissions were starting to pile up, and I didn't want the National Park to get bad press for leaving Trainers waiting. So, it was for that reason that I woke up early, dragged my butt up to this godforsaken mountain, and plonked myself into a chair in a freezing cold chair, waiting for someone who probably had the good sense to cancel anyway. Knowing my luck, he had already done so and the storm was killing my PDA's reception.

"'Bout time we finish with those damn Lakes, right Krok?" Rex said to his large maroon colored crocodile, Krookodile. Krok just rolled his eyes and nodded. He, like Rex was glad that they didn't have to go to the lakes anymore and search for that one Pokemon. Now at Oktori, it would be much easier to find whatever you were looking for and would only take like one trip, two if you weren't lucky.

"Looks like we got everything, we can head out now." Rex said to Krok, who just yawned and followed Rex out of the office. A large black hellhound with a long arrow tipped tail was waiting for them outside. "What's up Shadow?" Rex asked. Shadow was Leo's partner Pokemon, a Houndoom. Rex didn't really have to ask what Shadow wanted because he already knew, but he just shrugged and nodded. "Sure, you can tag along today, as well as you Mindbender." Shadow and Mindbender always loved going on these trips, he wasn't sure why, but he didn't mind taking them.

"Since you're coming with us, why not teleport us to Oktori Mindbender?" Rex asked. The ballroom gown wearing humanoid psychic type Pokemon nodded. Her white gown swayed back and forth as did her hands as she said a quick spell and a white blinding light elgulfed the four of them and they immediately vanished.

"Alright, before we start, let's get this Ice type repellant sprayed on so we can avoid them. All we're here for is Scraggy and Timburr, if there was time and it showed up, perhaps Makuhita as well." Rex quickly sprayed on the repellant and walked over to the ranger that was waiting for him. He saw that it was Chainy, a higher up ranger. Rex wasn't sure whether he formally met Chainy before, he didn't remember crossing paths with him, so he just decided to play it safe.

"I'm Rex and this is Krok, Shadow, and Mindbender." He said, introducing the gang. Shadow barked happily and Mindbender giggled, they had already met with Chainy a long time ago and had gone with him on runs several times. "Anyways, we're ready to start, just lead the way." With that, I popped open my Pokeplayer and put in a Scraggy Voice Disk.

After waiting for another ten minutes, I decided that the Trainer was probably running late. It couldn't possibly be much colder out there than it was in here, so I put on my extra thick black coat and walked outside, closely flanked by Dual. Thankfully I had been right - while it was noticeably colder out here, it wasn't bone-chilling or anything.

A couple of minutes later, my Trainer finally arrived. He was flanked by three Pokemon, two of whom I recognised. Shadow the Houndoom was a common sight around Ranger HQ - he was the partner Pokemon of Leo, another Elite Ranger and a close friend. The other was Mindbender, a Gardevoir and another favourite of Leo. It wasn't uncommon for them to go on expeditions without Leo. Lots of men that were similar often came through the Park - the current going theory was that Leo had a very expansive family, although Ataro stubbornly asserted that they were all actually Leo, and he either had multiple personalities or was a master troll.

"I'm Rex and this is Krok, Shadow, and Mindbender." he introduced us. I nodded to Shadow, was amused when Mindbender giggled (obviously for Dual's benefit, he continually acted tough around her and had been chasing her for months) and took very careful note of the dangerous looking Krookodile. "Anyways, we're ready to start, just lead the way."

"Alright, no worries, let's get moving," I said. I started leading us up the mountain, along the snowy fields. I could just barely hear Rex's Voice Disk over the muting effects of the snowstorm - I couldn't quite make out what it was, but I knew that the Pokeplayer would have no problems propagating its signal through the snow at sub-human hearing levels.

It didn't take long for our first Pokemon to appear. A chubby brown Pokemon was very carefully making and stacking a pile of snowballs, probably preparing for an upcoming fight.

"Are you interested in battling a Makuhita?" I asked Rex.

"Alright, no worries, let's get moving," he said to him. We walked for a while, but it wasn't long before a Pokemon came our way. At first Rex was excited because he saw the same yellow color and immediately thought it was Scraggy, however, it was not. It was Makuhita. He really wasn't hoping to find Makuhita until later on in the run, but since it was here now and he did say he was interested in capturing it, he was going to go for it.

"Are you interested in battling a Makuhita?" The Ranger asked him. Rex sighed, letting known his disappointment, but then nodded.

"Yeah, I suppose I will attempt to capture this Pokemon." He replied. "Might as well right?" Rex then pulled out a black and yellow mechanical device known as the Pokedex. He quickly studied the Makuhita's features. Makuhita wasn't really that tall, it was more medium-sized. The yellow skin was similar to that of Scraggy, which is why he initially thought it was going to be a Scraggy. These types of Pokémon were known for their bulkiness. He had two pairs of black gloves or hands, he wasn't sure which, but he knew they would pack a punch. They had cheeks similar to Pikachu, except that Makuhita's were doughnut shaped. He scanned the Makuhita with his Pokedex to get a better read on the Pokemon.

Makuhita, the Guts Pokemon. These Pokemon generally stand at about three to four feet and weigh between one hundred and ninety to two hundred and twenty pounds. They know the ability Guts, Thick Fat, or Sheer Force. Makuhita are constantly eating and will eat most anything. Berries and fruits are common snacks but human food is not turned down when the chance comes. Makuhita are constantly training to be the best fighters they can be. They are more than willing to throw their weight around as evidenced by broken trees and smashed rocks are often found where they live. They also constantly eat and sleep to pack more pounds on and to store more energy for evolution. Makuhita never gives up, always getting back on its feet no matter how many times it's knocked over. Each time rising to its feet builds up energy in its body.

"Hmm, this will be a tough opponent then. Sky Lynx, you're up." He said, tossing a Pokeball into the air. A large scorpion like, bat creature emerged from the sphere. The purple and black Fang Scorp Pokemon made a hissing sound and then distanced himself away from Makuhita. "Alright Sky Lynx, start this battle off with Rock Polish and then attack with Poison Jab then retreat."

"Scor!" Sky Lynx called out. His body was getting shinier. If Rock Polish worked right, his body would look glossy. His body would then be able to move faster and he could attack quicker. After that, his stinger on his tail would glow purple, with poisonous gunk coming out of the end as he swooped down and struck Makuhita with it. Rex knew that Makuhita wouldn't just sit around while Sky Lynx used Rock Polish. He figured that Makuhita would also try to stat up or actually attack. Either way, Sky Lynx was ready for it.

At my offer, Rex sighed. "Yeah, I suppose I will attempt to capture this Pokemon," he said in a depressed tone. My brow crinkled as I attempted to understand what was going through Rex's mind. Most Trainers only battled with Pokemon that they wanted to capture, so if Rex was going to gain a new Pokemon for his team why would he sound so downbeat about it?

I realised that Rex had pulled out his Pokedex and was listening to it reel off facts about the Fighting-type. The Makuhita heard the robotic voice of the Pokedex and turned around to see us. The Wild Pokemon bellowed at us and started drumming on its stomach with its fists. The strikes were just as hard as the ones it would throw at an opponent, so I winced as I imagined the kind of pain the Makuhita was putting itself through. Still, the Belly Drum technique paid off - the pain would stimulate the Makuhita's adrenaline receptors and cause it to strike much, much harder than usual.

Rex apparently hadn't been watching. He put his Pokedex away and threw a PokeBall into the air. A white flash (almost as white as the snow) erupted from the sphere, and the shape of a Gliscor emerged from within. Bringing a Gliscor to Mount Oktori was a ballsy move, as Gliscor was very weak to Ice-based attacks. Then again, it was a pretty reasonable assumption that Rex knew what he was doing.

"Alright Sky Lynx, start this battle off with Rock Polish and then attack with Poison Jab then retreat," Rex ordered.

Sky Lynx started to shine, and he rubbed at his body with his claws. This technique burned away the impurities in his body and maximised his speed. The Gliscor then darted forwards as purple liquid started to drip from his pincers. He jabbed the Makuhita right in its belly before quickly juking to the left and circling around. The strike knocked the Makuhita back towards its pile of snowballs. A groan leaked out from the Wild Pokemon's mouth, but it stayed on its feet and reached for the snowballs. It started throwing them towards the Gliscor. Surprisingly the snow didn't seem to bother Sky Lynx much, but there were rocks hidden inside the snowballs, and they struck all over Sky Lynx's body and wings, impeding his movement. They left sizable welts, and I was quite sure that the Gliscor was in some serious pain.

"Alright Sky Lynx, he did a number on you, are you alright?" Rex said, showing his concern. He was a tad bit disappointed, but he knew it wasn't his Pokemon's fault. No, he wasn't disappointed in his Pokemon, but in himself for not being able to counter the Makuhita's move to reduce the damage Sky Lynx. "Good job though, we'll just have to be more careful with our next moves. He used Belly Drum, which will be a bitch." He said, trying to think of a way to counter. Sky Lynx didn't know Haze or Clear Smog, so that gigantic boost in attack was going to be there until the end of the battle. That only meant that Rex and Sky Lynx were going to have to attack from a distance and try to dodge anything Makuhita throws at them.

"Hmm, we can't attack it head on without getting you hurt, so we'll just have to attack at a distance." Rex said, but he knew Sky Lynx wouldn't like that. Sky Lynx always liked attacking head on, but no recklessly. Rex then knew which move could get him in and out of there swiftly, Quick Attack. However, that move by itself wasn't very strong, definitely not against a Fighting type, and especially not one as bulky as Makuhita. No, he was going to have to weaken the plump Fighting types' defense. Screech was the perfect move to use there. He knew that Quick Attack was an extremely fast move, but it was even faster now because of Rock Polish, even if Makuhita lowered Sky Lynx's speed, it was still boosted by Rock Polish. That was a good thing.

"Alright buddy, use Screech. His attack is too strong for you to stay close to him too long. As soon as you use Screech, he will be hopefully temporarily stunned or dazed, however, if it hits, he will for sure have his defenses lowered. That is where you use your speed to go in and hit him hard with Quick Attack."

Sky Lynx nodded and glared at Makuhita. Rex could tell he still felt the pain from the last attack, hopefully he would remember that pain to fuel his anger to make his attack more powerful. Sky Lynx opened his mouth... "Brace yourself, it's going to be loud." Rex called back to his ranger, but didn't take his eyes off of the battle. Then the ear piercing screech rang throughout the area. Rex covered his ears, but that wasn't enough to block out the sound. Sky Lynx would then shoot off like a bullet, leaving a white trail of light behind him and quickly and effectively strike Makuhita, bringing Rex that much more closer to capturing the little guy.

"Sky Lynx, he did a number on you, are you alright?" Rex asked, sounding a little concerned. He didn't sound overly worried though, and I couldn't say that I blamed him. The chances of this Makuhita actually bringing down his Gliscor was incredibly small.

"Good job though, we'll just have to be more careful with our next moves. He used Belly Drum, which will be a bitch. Hmm, we can't attack it head on without getting you hurt, so we'll just have to attack at a distance," the Trainer mused out loud. A plan seemed to be forming in his mind, and even though the Makuhita was starting to shuffle around strangely in the snow, I didn't want to interrupt his thought process. After what seemed like eternity, Rex seemed to have made up his mind. He commanded a Screech and Quick Attack combo, which would limit the amount of time that Sky Lynx spent in close proximity to the Wild Pokemon. The Makuhita's shuffling became more pronounced as Sky Lynx moved backwards, preparing to perform its attack.

"Brace yourself, it's going to be loud," Rex warned me. I nodded and covered my ears with my hands, squeezing my eyes shut as a precaution. Not a second later, I heard a horrible piercing noise that seemed to shoot straight through my skeleton. Almost instantly afterwards, I felt something small hit me on my head. I felt another and another, and when I opened my eyes I saw that rain had started to fall from the sky. The Makuhita's strange movements made sense now - it was performing a Rain Dance!

There was no time to ponder that now. Sky Lynx had started his Quick Attack. He blurred towards the Makuhita, leaving a barely distinguishable white line behind him as he moved. He crashed into the Fighting-type and then used his momentum to bank high into the sky. The Makuhita was thrown backwards, but it barely seemed to register what was happening. It was too busy flicking its arms in strange movements, almost like it was still dancing even though the rain was already falling. Either this Pokemon was an idiot, or planning something big.

The combo Sky Lynx just preformed worked just as he had wanted it to. All that was needed now was for him to throw the Superball. He was pretty sure the Makuhita was damaged enough for him to attempt to capture, but wasn't sure what else the Fighting type was planning to do. Whatever it was, he was going to try and capture it before it got around to doing that.

Rex knew that Makuhita knew a particular move that could do really serious damage to Sky Lynx if it managed to hit. However, Sky Lynx was incredibly fast now thanks to Rock Polish and Makuhita was really slow. The move Makuhita had was Ice Punch and it required direct contact, something that was not going to happen since Sky Lynx was airborne and Rex had no intention on attacking Makuhita anymore, therefore, making it nearly impossible for Makuhita to hit Sky Lynx before Rex got a chance to throw his Superball.

"Stay up in the air Sky Lynx, whatever he's trying to do will more than likely require physical contact so just stay up there while I throw this Pokeball." Sky Lynx nodded and stayed pretty high above Makuhita. Rex wasn't sure if Makuhita could jump, but he didn't think he would be able to jump that high.

Rex quickly reached into his bag and pulled out a Superball that he immediately enlarged. He took aim and launched the sphere towards the Fighting type Pokemon. He had hoped that he didn't miss or that Makuhita wouldn't try to deflect the ball before it sucked him in.

"Stay up in the air Sky Lynx, whatever he's trying to do will more than likely require physical contact so just stay up there while I throw this Pokeball," Rex commanded. His Pokemon nodded and screeched as it rose higher into the air. The Makuhita had stopped dancing, and huge waves of water were pouring out from its feet and flowing into the air before crashing back into the ground. It was then that I realised the Makuhita's strategy - a Rain Dance-empowered Surf would certainly do a buttload of damage to a Gliscor, especially considering Rex probably wouldn't be expecting it. Unfortunately for the wild Pokemon, however, Rex was ready to attempt a capture. He pulled a Super Ball out of his bag and enlarged it by pressing the button on the front of the capsule before throwing it at the Makuhita. I was worried that the flowing waves would knock the ball away.

As it turned out, I didn't need to be. The device arced perfectly above the water and struck the Makuhita on the top of its head. The Pokemon disappeared in a red flash and the water all collapsed to the ground in a single splash. I watched as the Super Ball shook a few times before laying still.

"Congratuations," I called out to Rex as I walked over to pick the ball up. I grimaced as I did so - the snow and water made it freezing cold. I rubbed it quickly against my coat and stowed it within an inner pocket where it would be safe.

"Are you ready to move on?" I asked my Trainer.

"Are you ready to move on?" He asked me once the ball remained motionless on the ground. Rex's plan worked out just as he wanted it too, Sky Lynx managed to avoid taking any damage. It seemed too good to be true, that Makuhita was caught that quickly, but he was happy that it happened.

"Yea, we're ready to move on now." Rex said, pulling out a small voice disk that contained the cry of a Timburr. He didn't waste anytime pressing play. The sound of Timburr surrounded the area. As they moved on forward, he would just have to keep his eyes peeled for a Timburr.

"Yeah, we're ready to move on now," Rex replied. I nodded and continued up the mountain, but Rex just coughed. "Actually, I meant back towards the gate," he explained. "Something has come up and I have to leave early."

"Oh okay," I responded. I cricked my neck and turned around, leading Rex back towards the entrance. It was uncommon for Trainers to end their runs this early, but it was not unheard of, and Rex gave me the impression of being a very busy person.

It only took us about ten minutes to arrive back at the entrance. I passed the Trainer his Pokemon and said goodbye to both Shadow and Mindbender. Rex strolled out through the gate and I was sure to latch it carefully shut. I then decided to take refuge inside the station and leave for Headquarters tomorrow - if I travelled down now and then had to travel back up tomorrow I would be indescribably pissed.
