The scorching heat was typical of the weather usually seen during the summer months around the great lakes here in the park. I decided that I'd play risky, even though I was well aware of the temperamental weather, and wear a t-shirt and shorts. As a wise man once said, "yolo".

Glancing at the watch on my wrist, I whistled out for the Pokemon that would be accompanying me to the park. A few seconds later, a yellow creature whizzed by, bringing the sounds of many excited yelps with it. The Jolteon jumped up at me excitedly, nipping at my arms in its eagerness to go out to the lakes again today. "Alright, alright, calm down. We're heading off now," I said, petting him on the head and closing the cabin door. Looking before me I saw huge green meadows and there was a very salty smell in the air. "Now to find our trainer. Another newbie," I informed the Jolteon.

And a few minutes later, we met up with the trainer. Two stone sentinels that marked the entrance to the lakes for the trainer was where we had agreed to meet up. Seeing the trainer a small bit away, I shouted out a greeting and waved to him. A few minutes later, after the pleasantries, I was escorting him through the gates to begin the journey.

"Welcome to the Park!" I said. "Just a friendly reminder that exploseves are not permitted," I said, reflecting back on a previous trip into the lakes with a shudder. The trainer gave me odd looks, but we continued onward nonetheless

The sun shone bright in the sky, while a few lazy clouds threatened to pass in front of the luminous orb. Rayce scanned the area, looking for the Ranger he was told would meet him near the Great Lakes. This was his first time coming to the National Park, although he had heard much about it. The chance to capture rare and powerful Pokemon drew hundreds of trainers to the island park every month. Seeing the large stones, Rayce headed towards the plinths, and soon found his guide. He had a very excited Jolteon next to him, and looked eager to get going.

"Welcome to the park! "Just a friendly reminder that explosives are not permitted," He said, with what appeared to be a serious tone. Rayce wondered in what scenario explosives would be used on the island, and what kind of trainer would have them. The distress on the Ranger's face convinced him not to push the subject, however. The young trainer extended his hand in welcome, and pulled out two pokeballs.

"Thanks! I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of Pokemon you guys have out here. Mind if my Pokemon walk with us?" Rayce didn't wait for an answer, and instead activated both balls, releasing the two creatures contained within the devices. Twin beams of white light arced onto the ground, and when they faded his Pokemon stood instead. "This is Dragoon," Rayce said, pointing towards the Dragon type Pokemon. "She's a new addition to the team, and I'm hoping we get some good bonding time from this expedition." Dragoon flapped her large blue wings, causing the long grasses around the groups feet to billow. Gesturing toward the other Pokemon that had appeared, Rayce again addressed the Ranger. "And this is Magnet. He's been with me since I was just a little kid, so he understands me very well." Magnet beamed at the praise, bobbing up and down in agreement to the praise. "So shall we get started?" Rayce began walking past the stone sentinels, towards the large lakes beyond.

"Thanks! I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of Pokemon you guys have out here. Mind if my Pokemon walk with us?" Rayce asked as he whipped out two Pokeballs. There were two simultaneous flashes of red light, followed by the appearance of Rayce's two Pokemon. "This is Dragoon," Rayce said, pointing towards the Dragon type Pokemon. "She's a new addition to the team, and I'm hoping we get some good bonding time from this expedition." I nodded at the Dragonite, before turning my attention to his other Pokemon, Magnezone. The Magnezone looked familiar and I was fairly certain that I had battled it previously. "And this is Magnet. He's been with me since I was just a little kid, so he understands me very well," Rayce added, pointing at the jovial Magnezone. "So, shall we get started?"

"Of course," I said, and we began to make our way into the park. Not long after the greeting sentinels did we find ourselves along a beaten sand path that split a meadow in two. The sound of waves crashing against nearby walls and the cawing of Wingull in the distance helped to set a pleasant seaside atmosphere. The path split after a while, and we decided to take the path on the left that descended. A few minutes later, we reached a large lake.

"Karp," I heard a weak voice struggle to say. I looked down on the path a few meters before the lake and saw a wizened red fish lying there. It looked up at us for a brief second before flopping up and landing down on the sand with a soft thud. "Karp," it said again as the long whiskers on its face wiggled about.

"A Magikarp," I noted. "If you're interested, this wouldn't be a difficult first battle."

"Karp," A small voice sounded from the shore of lake as Rayce and Jay walked along the rough path. Turning toward the sound, Rayce saw a rather large orange fish flop out of the water of the lake and onto the sandy beach. The fish repeated its previous utterance of its name as it writhed in the sand, flopping back and forth.

"A Magikarp," Jay informed the trainer as he too spotted the fish. "If you're interested, this wouldn't be a difficult first battle." Rayce pondered the water-type Pokemon for a few moments. Magikarp are notorious for being very weak, so they are very easy to catch, but also rather worthless in any type of Pokemon battle. However, after they gain enough experience, Magikarp evolve into the extremely powerful Gyrados. Among sailors and fishermen, Gyrados have a near-mythic status, and their legendary rage causes any who face them to give pause. Rayce would indeed love to have one of those on his team.

"I think I would like to catch it," Rayce said, pondering the best way to go about this battle. Magnezone would clearly be the best choice, as it's electric typing gives it a distinct advantage over the water Pokemon. However, Magnezone's attacks could be too powerful, so Rayce would have to make sure to limit the power Magnet put into his attacks. "Alright Magnet, you're up. Dragoon, you're on standby. I don't expect this Magikarp to give us much trouble, but we should be prepared for anything." Dragoon nodded in comprehension as Magnet levitated higher above the ground, and took a wide sweeping path toward the Magikarp in his favorite attack pattern. "Alright Magnet, give it a Tackle Attack. You shouldn't need to hold back at this moment, but be careful not to knock the Magikarp into the Lake, or we'll lose it forever. Not only that, but we certainly wouldn't want to give any opportunity to evolve." It was a very rare occurrence, but there have been reports of young trainers getting into battles with older Magikarp, only to have the Magikarp evolve mid-battle into the mighty Gyrados. None of the reports had good endings.

Magnet hummed an affirmative "Zone," as he continued his sweeping arc toward the Magikarp. At this trajectory, he would barrel into the Magikarp at full strength, but away from the lake to keep it from escaping the battle.

"I think I would like to catch it," Rayce said after a few moments of thinking through what to do. It was naturally a good choice since there was very little a Magikarp could do to a Magnezone and Magnezone even had super effective attacks on Magikarp. However, Magnezone is a very powerful Pokemon that could easily knock out the Magikarp if it wasn't careful. I hoped that Rayce was aware of this possibility as he began to plan his attack.

"Alright Magnet, you're up. Dragoon, you're on standby. I don't expect this Magikarp to give us much trouble, but we should be prepared for anything." Dragonite nodded before stepping backwards a little, looking a little disappointed. But it'd surely have its own time to shine later on. "Alright Magnet, give it a Tackle Attack," Rayce continued. "You shouldn't need to hold back at this moment, but be careful not to knock the Magikarp into the Lake, or we'll lose it forever. Not only that, but we certainly wouldn't want to give any opportunity to evolve."

I couldn't help but laugh a little at the comment. It was all too well-known that Magikarp when angered evolved rapidly into Gyarados to exact a kind of retribution. Certain researchers have even concluded that Magikarp will only evolve when subjected to unfavourable conditions that would trigger hormone secretion - so much so that the Pokemon's body would change and it would evolve into Gyarados. It seemed pretty logical to me, quite cool given how Magikarp would be using evolution as a natural adaptive technique.

I looked at the floating magnet hovering above the ground. On Rayce's command it shot forward, magnets spinning around giving out warning lights. Magnezone's large pupil narrowed on the Magikarp as it zoomed closer to Magikarp. Magikarp seemed a little distracted and was looking vacantly at a pudle on the ground as the steel body slammed into it.

"Karp," the fish wailed as it was knocked into the air. It landed with a plopping sound on a wet patch of sand. "Karp," ot muttered angrily, flopping over to the water. Before Rayce could react, the Pokemon had jumped into the water in one final leap. Its body disappeared under the water as we all looked on expectantly.

I was just about to mention the possibility of the annoyed Magikarp leaving when Magnezone let out a startled whirring sound. I looked just in time to see the jet of water die off. I looked back at the lake to see a fierce-looking Magikarp glaring back at the giant magnet Pokemon. "Karp," it cried out, anger evident in its tone.

"Looks like this one's a fighter," I noted.

Rayce watched with anticipation as the battle unfolded. Magnet connected with his attack, launching the Magikarp into the air. It landed on the beach with a soft thud, clearly damaged from the larger Steel Pokemon's attack. The trainer was about to issue another attack when the Magikarp flailed with such force it bounded into the lake, disappearing under the blue water with a splash. "Well that was annoy..." Rayce began, when he was interrupted by a frantic cry from Magnet. Judging from the water dripping off the Pokemon's body, Rayce could only assume the Magikarp had launched some sort of water based attack. He looked out at the lake, and sure enough, there was the Magikarp on the surface, looking quite angry. While Rayce was glad he still had a chance to catch the Pokemon, now the Magikarp was in the lake, which would make fighting him much more difficult. He would need to come up with a good plan in order to reel in this fish.

'I can't have Magnet use an electric based attack, as the lake would just dissipate the electricity and it wouldn't have any effect. A steel type attack could be good, but Magikarp are really fast swimmers, so he could probably dodge the attack quite easily.' Rayce had almost given up hope, when an idea struck him like a Thunder Bolt. "Magnet," He called out, getting his Pokemon's attention. "Use Lock-On to hone in on the Magikarp's position!" Rayce knew that Lock-On allowed Magnet to analyze and interpret a huge variety of data, including target speed, attack angles, and the trajectory of incoming attacks. Using this data, Rayce hoped to formulate a winning strategy. His plan was this: Magnet would use the information Lock-On provided him to track the Magikarp and observe when the best point of attack would be. At this point, Magnet would dodge the 'Karp's incoming attack and launch a counter-attack utilizing one of his signature moves, Flash Cannon. This would, hopefully, launch the Magikarp out of the lake and back onto shore, with perhaps enough damage for Rayce to make the capture as well. After this occurs, Rayce would recall Magnet from the battle, sending in Dragoon to launch a fast Thunder Wave attack, thus paralyzing the Magikarp and making it much easier to capture. However, all of this was moot if even one part of the plan went awry. Rayce then informed his teammates about his idea.

"Magnet, once you're locked-on, I want you to watch for the Magikarp's next attack. Dodge it and launch your own counter-attack using Flash Cannon. Don't make it too powerful, we don't want to knock the Pokemon out. Aim to make the attack launch him out of the water." The Magnezone bobbed in affirmation, turning its attention toward the lake and the enemy Magikarp. Rayce turned toward Dragoon, informing her of the next step in the plan. "Alright Dragoon, you ready to rock? Once Magnet gets that Magikarp out of the water, you're going to step into the fight and attack the Magikarp with a Thunder Wave. This will paralyze it and make a capture much easier. That sound like a plan?" Dragoon nodded, a fierce grin spreading over her face. It was time to show her trainer how powerful she was.

After the few seconds it took to explain and plan everything out, Rayce was sure the Magikarp would be attacking again soon. He could only hope this half-baked scheme of his could work. Otherwise, this battle would be much more difficult than Jay had led him to believe.

Rayce pondered over what would be the best approach to handle the lurking Magikarp for a few moments before he seemed to have made his decission. "Use Lock-On to hone in on the Magikarp's position!" he called out to Magnezone. Magnezone made a beeping sound to show its trainer that it was ready to do that move. It was an interesting choice, but most likely it would be effective in finding the karp Pokemon. I wasn't entirely too sure on how it worked but I knew satellite navigation and complex mathematical fomulae were involved.

"Magnet, once you're locked-on, I want you to watch for the Magikarp's next attack. Dodge it and launch your own counter-attack using Flash Cannon," Rayce announced a few seconds later. "Don't make it too powerful, we don't want to knock the Pokemon out. Aim to make the attack launch him out of the water." Magnezone pupil darted back and forth beneath the water, scanning for the Magikarp so that it could gein the series of attacks.

Alright Dragoon, you ready to rock? Once Magnet gets that Magikarp out of the water, you're going to step into the fight and attack the Magikarp with a Thunder Wave. This will paralyze it and make a capture much easier. That sound like a plan?" Dragoon nodded to show his agreement, and without further notice, the attacks began.

Magnezone made a whirring sound as its head froze in place, locked onto one target: the hidden Magikarp below the water's surface. "Zone," it said monotonously, signalling it had found the co-ordinates of the Magikarp. The two minor magnets on Magnezone twisted slowly to face each other. The magnets began making pinging sounds, followed by the horrible sound of iton scraping against other iron. A sphereical ball of silver began to form between the two magnets, gradually expanding. Suddenly, Magnzeone fired the Flash Cannon attack into the water, which was immediately followed by a cry of pain as the previously-seen Magikarp popped up out of the water, waddled a bit, before splashing back into the water.

I was unsure as to how affective the attack had been until Magikarp poked its head out of the water. "Karp," it growled. "Kaaaarrrrp." Head ducking down, the fish swam straight towards Magnezone, moving surprisingly quick through the water. Before Magnezone could react, it shot out from the water, soaring almost gracefully through the sky before slamming a hardened scaled tail against Magnezone, knocking the floating magnet to the ground. Magikarp dropped down onto the warm sand, panting.

Dragonite had taken the opportunity while its comrade was being attacked and I turned around just in time to see a jolt of electricity whizz through the air before it struck Magikarp head-on. "Karp," it wheezed, flopping about once more. The Magikarp looked notably weaker than before I couldn't help but observe. Perhaps this would be a good time to try and capture it.

Rayce observed the sequence of events with baited breath. While Magnet's Flash Cannon did not knock the Magikarp out of the water as he had hoped, the Iron Tail attack it launched back at Magnet proved most effective in accomplishing that goal. As Magnet crashed into the ground, Dragoon stepped up and unleashed a devestating static burst, hitting the Magikarp dead center as it fell to the ground. The fish flopped around weakly, clearly hurting from the various attacks used against it throughout the battle. Rayce reached into the side pocket of his bag, where he kept any and all types of Poke Balls for quick access. He grabbed a Park Ball and tossed it at the Magikarp with a flick of his wrist, a move practiced over hundreds of hours in his small city-apartment. Since the Magikarp was severely damaged and not moving much, tossing the ball at it was like shooting a fish in a barrel. Rayce watched with anticipation as the ball hit the Pokemon with a small thud. In just a few moments, he may have a brand new Pokemon.

OOC: Yeah, you can't say the ball hit, but it's fine in this scenario. Also, Magikarp's gender?

After the moves had been done and the Magikarp successfully paralysed, Rayce decided that now would be as good a time as any to attempt to capture the Magikarp. He whipped out a Park Ball, and without further delay, he tossed it. The exhausted Magikarp flopped one final time on the warm sand before a red beam of light engulfed it, sucking it into the capsule. With a soft thud sound, the Park Ball landed on the sand and began to rattle.

One shake. Two... Three before the Park Ball pinged and flashed a tone of red, signaling the capture of the Magikarp.

"Congrats, Rayce. It seems as though you've caught your first Pokemon here in the Park. I'll have to store it until the run is over with though," I informed Rayce, pocketing the Park Ball with the newly-captured Magikarp. Rayce gave his Magnezone and Dragonite approving looks after working quite well for him during the battle.

A deep growl cut across the congratulations and we all turned suddenly to see a small blue Pokemon with pointed red scales. It growled once more, teeth bared. The Carvanha did not look happy for some reason but it seemed as though we were about to find out.

"Are you interested in battling this Croconaw?" I asked Rayce. "It could be a fearsome foe."

Rayce barely had time to celebrate his successful capture of the Magikarp or tend to Magnet's wounds when a menacing growl sounded from behind them. Human and Pokemon alike turned to see the barred teeth of a Croconaw. Jay addressed Rayce, indicating the newly encountered Pokemon. "Are you interested in battling this Croconaw? It could be a fearsome foe." Rayce agreed it could be a tough battle, and while he would enjoy another member of the team, Croconaw wasn't exactly the kind of Pokemon he was looking for. Moving carefully, so as not to further arouse the Pokemon's anger, Rayce responded to Jay's question.

"Not particularly. They're fine Pokemon, but I don't think I want one quite yet. Perhaps we could manage to get past it? If not, I have a Pokedoll to distract it." Rayce slid his bag slowly from his shoulder so he could access one of the larger pockets. Inside were several items of varying import, but near the top a fluffy, pink Clefairy doll was clearly visible. He readied to use it, in case there was no way around the Croconaw.

"Not particularly. They're fine Pokemon, but I don't think I want one quite yet. Perhaps we could manage to get past it? If not, I have a Pokedoll to distract it," Rayce said. I knew that feeling well enough and had used many a Pokedoll in my day. As we made to move, the Croconaw began snapping its jaw violently before advancing a little. It was clear that this aggressive Pokemon didn't want us to leave but Rayce still had a Pokedoll he could attempt to use, if the Croconaw fell for the bait. He took the doll out slowly from his bag, eyeing the Croconaw as he moved slowly, befre withdrawing a pink stuffed Clefairy doll. The Croconaw's eyes glared at it before snapping once more.

"Give it a good toss," I said to Rayce. "We don't want this thing to be snapping at our heels all day," I said, silently laughing at my own pun. I wasn't sure whether Rayce noticed or not but he gave the doll a huge throw and it soared through the air before landing with a 'plop' in the center of the lake Magikarp was in earlier. Croconaw's head followed the shape before it faced us again, snapping its jaw. It paused for a few moments as we stood still before darting off towards the lake and hopping right in.

"Now let's go quickly," I said. "There are some shallow lakes a little farther up that Pokemon like Croconaw seem to hate because of the depth. Mostly smaller Pokemon tend to live around there so Croconaw would lack through challengers that it would otherwise battle to assert its dominance."

We continued walking for perhaps five minutes or so, enjoying the sun, as we headed away from that rather large lake and towards the shallow pools. The ground was sandy and I almost wanted to take off my shoes and walk in the warm sand, but probably wouldn't be too professional... then again you only live once so I took off my sandals and began walking barefoot. Rayce probably gave me funny stares, I wouldn't have blamed him if he did. As we approached the shallow pools, a little blue shaped popped out of the water. It looked up at us with a curious grin.

"Marill," it decided after a few seconds. "Mar," it added gleefully.

"Any interest in a Marill, Rayce?"

Rayce looked at the tiny blue Pokemon with slight disappointment. While he was sure some other trainers would enjoy having a Marill, Rayce was not one of them. Thankfully, this little guy seemed to be in a better mood than the Croconaw they just fled from. Perhaps they could get away without using any Pokedolls? "Unfortunately, I'm not interested in this one either," Rayce informed the Ranger. He felt bad about leaving behind two perfectly good Pokemon, but they weren't what he was looking for at the moment. "This guy seems much happier than the last encounter, perhaps we can get around him more easily?" Rayce looked at the path that continued around the lakes, wondering whether the Marill would bar his path. He didn't want to capture the Pokemon, and he didn't want to waste a Pokedoll on it, and he certainly didn't want to hurt the little guy to get away either. Rayce waited to see what Jay thought of this.

Rayce did seem interested in the Marill either. He looked to me with a slightly disappointed look. "Unfortunately, I'm not interested in this one either," he said after a while. "This guy seems much happier than the last encounter, perhaps we can get around him more easily?"

"Hopefully this Marill isn't feeling very playful," I said as we began to retreat a little. Turning our backs on the blue Pokemon with a white underbelly, we began walking through the sand and away from the smaller lakes.

"What would you like to find?" I asked Rayce after walking for a few minutes. "There are plenty of water Pokemon up for grabs here."

As we continued walking, the central lake of the Great Lakes came into view. It looked more like an ocean than a lake with its dark water and how it stretched out further than visible to the naked eye. We approached the still water and I shielded my eyes from the sun, pointing out to a little island in the center of the lake.

"That island is relatively small and insignificant, perhaps some rare things are hiding out there," I noted. There was a small brown row-boat overturned a little way up the beach and we decided to walk towards it. Just as the pair of us flipped it over, a large red creature jumped out, surprised to have visiters. Waving its tentacles before us frantically, I told Rayce that we had encountered an Octillery.

"I don't know very much about Octillery except that they're quite a rare find here, usually preferring the cold dark bottom of lakes where they hide most of their lives. I guess this one must've been washed ashore and found that the rowboat made a suitable hiding spot. It could be quite a tough opponent if you want to battle it," I added.
