The feather drifted through the air, like a kids swing set. Back and forth until it was only a few inches from the floor. Then Amonea grabbed it. Quickly she tucked the feather behind her ear, but not before she ran it over the uncalloused parts of her hand, feeling its smooth surface against her skin.

The source of the feather, a rather peckish Wingull, sneezed and took flight out of the open window. As its wings spread out, it sent a spray of rainwater backwards and into the ranger station. Ignoring the water, Amonea slammed the window shut irratably and glanced at her watch.

It was early afternoon, around 1:00. Where was he? The trainer she was supposed to be taking into the park. It was the first one she had taken in several months, after a pro-longed illness and then a rush back to the mainland to care for her ailing grandmother. And after all her hard work, he was late!

Or perhaps not. The door suddenly swung open onto the drizzly day, allowing entrance to the new park goers.

"Welcome. I am Ranger Amonea. Don't you dare forget to wipe your feet!" she added sharply. Lack of sleep mixed with nerves made her more cross than usual. Without waiting for a reply, she pulled a black raincoat on pulled its hood over her long red hair.

"We'd normally take the cart, but I am not fooling with it in the rain. The jeep will do just fine. Follow me, please." Grabbing a set of keys, she marched into the wet parking lot, earning her a disapproving look from a fellow ranger and a pointed nod at an old sign hung above the door: 'Politeness and courtesy go a long way!'

Selecting an old white jeep that was actually quite comfortable, Amonea started it up and cranked the heat to full. It was then she glanced around for her trainer, a Mr. Carpenter.

The rain was almost literally coming down in sheets. This part was not in the job discription. Here I was, coming down to the National Park to study the environment at Meteor Valley, and find clues to why it is such a haven for ghost and psychic Pokemon. Now I wish I could stick one of the other lab aids with this assignment. Okay, okay, I know I volunteered for this. I even bought a few Park balls to hopefully catch a few Pokemon while I was there. But the rain? Thank you Kyogre. Thank you very much.

I took my glasses off to hopefully wipe some of the water off them. No use. My clothes were soaked through. Right now, I was regretting not teaching Issac Thunder. It would be very useful in this weather. But no. I'm cold, I'm soaked. How could things get worse?

My foot struck a Geodude that was sleeping halfway underground. It didn't wake up, but I ended up falling face-first into the mud. Yep, things got worse. I couldn't wait to get to the Ranger station. Just a few more yards...

I swung open the door to the station, enjoying the dry, warm air. Looking around I saw a few Rangers organizing files, one that was taking off his coat, probably just getting back from a park run, and another who noticed me as I came in and started walking towards me. She was a young, red-headed woman. The fact that she was walking towards me led me to the conclusion that she was my Ranger. I also just couldn't help noticing that she was also kind of pretty, and that cheered me up a bit. Then I noticed that she also looked a little pissed.

“Welcome, I'm Ranger Amonea. Don't you dare forget to wipe your feet!” she said, grabbing a raincoat from the coat rack, pulling the hood over her head. Up close, I noticed that her bright green eyes had dark circles under them, indicating lack of sleep. She apparently was feeling as stressed as I was. Usually when I'm in a bad mood, I tend not to care about how others are feeling. In this case for some reason, I figured I'd tread lightly and do what she says. Still, it's just my luck. Cold, wet, covered in mud, and now traveling with a stressed-out Ranger. Still, it could be worse. Crud, I just jynxed myself again. I zipped up my raincoat, and followed her outside.

"We'd normally take the cart, but I am not fooling with it in the rain. The jeep will do just fine. Follow me, please." she said, still in a huffy mood. I noticed another ranger shoot her a disapproving glance. That seemed to lighten her step a little bit. She led me over to a white jeep and hopped in, beckoning me to do the same. She had the heater on full blast, which was good, because I was freezing. She too, appeared to have lightened up a bit, so I decided to introduce myself.

“Hi, m' name's Nick. It's nice to meet you Miss Amonea. Uh, sorry for getting your jeep all muddy.” I offered my hand as not only a greeting, but also as a peace offering.

"The jeep is bound to get caked in mud, anyway." Amonea accepted the offered hand and shook it.

Releasing the emergency brake and pushing the clutch down to shift into first gear, Amonea cursed softly. The vehicle had stalled. It took another two attempts to get the car moving.

It was with great control that Amonea calmly remarked on the need for more automatic vehicles at the Ranger station. "It's not that I don't know how to drive them," she added as she carefully drove over the muddy roads. "It's just...they can be such a pain in the bum, y'know?"

Being in a warm car and going into familiar territory seemed to have calmed Amonea down. She didn't apologize for her earlier tartness, but she did go out of her way to make nice, polite talk with Nick as she started down the steep and narrow road into Meteor Valley.

She was just mentioning how good it was that the rain had stopped when the jeep suddenly pulled itself to the left side of the road. Amonea jerked the wheel to the right, her face paling as she caught a good view of the steep hillside they were on. The jeep tilted for a second as it turned, slamming Amonea into the drivers door. It happened so suddenly that she didn't have any time to react.

Struggling to keep the jeep under control as it slipped on the mud, she suddenly let out her first scream since she'd lost control of the jeep. She had meant to apply the brake and slide down the remaining thirty feet of road, but had instead hit the gas. Together, ranger, trainer and jeep shot down the road and went flying into a large puddle of rainwater. The air bags went off and Amonea got a face full of soft white cloth.

After a few moments of struggling, Amonea slid out of the jeep and landed ankle deep in slushy brown water. Splashing to the other side of the jeep, she yanked the door open.

    "Nick! Are you alright?"

OOC: Trying to get my MCR up for a big catch are we? ^_^

    “Nick! Are you alright?”

I woke up after being knocked out for a couple minutes at the sound of Amonea's voice. She had managed to get out of the jeep and make it around to my side. I saw that my airbag was engaged and then remembered that Amonea was concerned about my condition. I wanted to be sure I was fine before I answered. I started the emergency self-check procedure they taught us when I was a Staraptor Scout. I never thought I'd actually have to use it though. Basically, I start at the top, and move my way down.

First, I lifted my head to check for any serious bleeding. Seeing none, I move my arms to make sure they were not broken. Then, I used my hands to place pressure on various parts of my torso to check for rib fractures or bruising. Feeling nothing, I finish with my legs. Left leg feels fine, Right leg... uh oh...

I turned my attention to Amonea. She looked completely disheveled with her tangled hair and the look of fear on her face. “Ugh, I think I sprained my ankle” I told her. I knew there was no time to lose. I had to get it bound before the swelling started.

I noticed a First Aid kit attached to the dashboard. Opening it, I grabbed a cold compress to cut the swelling and a heavy bandage to support it. It's amazing how much I retained from Staraptor Scouts. Binding my ankle with the cold compress against it, I also took a plastic bag to protect the bandage from the muddy water. Leaving my boot on actually helps support the foot. I slid out of the jeep and put weight on the foot.

“It's not too bad,” I told her. “It looks we can go on.” I wasn't about to give up now that we had gotten this far. I felt like I could walk a few miles on my stable foot. Besides, it was a long way to the station, and the jeep wasn't going anywhere fast.

Still, Amonea was the expert. I had to respect her decision in this predicament.

    OOC: Staraptor Scouts? xD Cool.

    IC:

Amonea inspected Nick, her eyes taking in his injury and what looked like a blossoming bruise on his forehead.

"I think you hit your head," Amonea said slowly. She bit her lip. True, they could go on and if he was up to it, she could always get Kaci to carry him...but he had hit his head. Should she take the risk?

What a thing to happen on my first day back, Amonea thought sourly. She wouldn't take any risks today. Stupid! To keep driving. To think she could handle the bloody mud!

"Let's just get you checked out before we come back. It's a bad day all around to go adventuring. There were plans to put a guardrail up before I, er, left. Apparently they never got around to it."

Walking around the jeep, Amonea pulled open the drivers door and reached in under the seat. After a couple moments of searching, she retrieved a small walkie-talkie. Cell phone service didn't work so well out here.

As she warmed the walkie-talkie up, she came around to Nick's side of the vehicle, not really paying attention to her surroundings. That was a mistake. Her muddy and wet boots made contact with a small rock. The walkie-talkie went flying as she landed face first on the ground.

"Darn it!" she yelled, though she really wanted to use some other, stronger words. Pushing herself up, she had to wipe mud off her face with her fingers, as she was was coated in the thick red-brown dirt that filled the valley. It was rather like a weird face compact.

"Where is it?" she muttered, trying to wipe her hands on her coat. Her movements suddenly stopped as she stared straight ahead of her, in front of the jeep.

A large, rocky plain, surrounded by hills faced them. And about twenty feet into the plain hovered a beautiful Pokemon. The sun had just came out and it shone down on the creature, reflecting off her pale blue and pastel yellow body. She wore on her head a crown-like thing, much like an upside down banana peel. Pale pink circles seemed to hover around her, like translucent rays of light.

She stared at them, her eyes warm...and full of mirth. Amonea's awe filled look dropped away. A frown replaced it. She knew that look. It was the look of an impish Pokemon. She then saw it.

"Look! The Cresselia has the walkie-talkie in her mouth!" she hissed. The legendary 'mon giggled, her voice coming out sharp and long, reminding Amonea of a swan's voice. The Cresselia nodded at them, then turned and slowly flew away, looking back to see if they gave chase.

"Wonderful! Do you wanna follow her?" Amonea asked Nick.

OOC: No no, you're fine. I think it makes it more fun ^_^

The Cresselia's sheer beauty left me speechless. All of a sudden, any feelings of hurt or despair melted away as I stared awestruck. That is, until Amonea spoke up and snapped me out of my trance.

"Look! The Cresselia has the walkie-talkie in her mouth!" she hissed.

My senses returned, I saw that the Cresselia indeed had her walkie-talkie in its possession. In the next moment, it turned around with a swan-like wail, sneaking away into the dark forest. It turned its head as it left, indicating that it expected us to follow.

"Wonderful! Do you wanna follow her?" Amonea asked me. I thought over our situation for a moment. Without that radio we wouldn't be able to call for help. Then again, if we follow it, we may end up in an even more dire situation. I also remembered who Cresellia typically follows, and I was not prepared to meet with the harbinger of darkness...

I thought back to what I learned about Cresselia at the Reasearch academy. All of the trainees had to take a class on Pokemon Mythology, and we spent a great deal of time on Darkrai and Cresselia. That was when I realized that Cresselia was trying to help us, possibly to lead us to a safer location.

I decided that following Cresselia would be the best thing for us to do right now. I turned to Amonea and told her my decision. Taking a few steps, I realized that walking for me would not be very easy. For some reason though, I had an unnatural feeling of willpower, like something inside was pushing me forward. Was Cresselia the one who was causing this?

Amonea's frown deepened as she watched Nick try to walk. Sure, the Crssselia was going rather slowly, but Nick would probably hurt himself mre if he kept walking on that ankle.

"Oi, Kaci!" Amonea pulled out a small orange and black Pokeball. With a quick flick of her hand, it opened in a flash of violet light.

Standing before Amonea now was a large Pokemon, shaped rather like Barn-Bay the Dinosaur, a child's cartoon character. Except instead of purple and green skin, he had cream and orange scales, smooth and hard to the touch. And on his back was a pair of what appeared like useless wings, small and frail looking.

"This is my Dragonite, Kaci," Amonea told Nick as she patted Kaci's stomach. Kaci smiled and nodded his head at Nick. "If you want, Kaci will carry you, or let you try and ride him, if you're careful. If you don't want to, then that's fine. I'll let you decide, I'm gonna hurry on."

As Nick decided what to do, Amonea began to walk towards the now beckoning Cresslia. It was maybe only thirty feet, but as Amonea walked, time seemed to stretch on. A feeling of calm contentment fell over her as the Cresslia stared into her eyes. She didn;t notice the ache in her side where she'd hit the door, or the cold wet clothes she wore.

She may have kept on like that forever, but something kept coming to her, like an annoying itch in her skull. She was a ranger. She had a trainer with her. Slowly, with great effort, the dream like state she was in lifted. Stopping, she looked behind her. She could still see the car! And Nick!

Dazedly, she looked around. Two things came to her attention: Cresslia was still haning around, high in the air. That was odd. And there was a small dog looking at her. No, not a dog. A Pokemon. It had the ratty gray-black fur of one of her mutts and stood no taller than her knee. Two alert, dark eyes stared out at her from under huge bangs.

"Nick, look here. A Poochyena. What do you wanna do?"

    OOC: I kinda figured that.

I kept walking towards Cresselia, the pain in my ankle, all feelings of despair, gone. I began to see scenes of the happiest moments in my life. The Christmas when I got my first two-wheeler, the day I received my trainer license along with a Voltorb, when Issac evolved, my first kiss...

Suddenly, I was snapped out of it when I ran into what seemed like an orange wall. Looking up, I saw the soft face of a Dragonite looking down at me.

"This is my Dragonite, Kaci," said Amonea. She then offered Kaci to me so that I could ride her. I'm a bit of a lone wolf, and I'm not very comfortable accepting other people's help. However, this Dragonite seemed quite friendly and did not seem to mind the proposition. Besides, if I spend too much time on this ankle I could do some permanent damage to it.

I patted Kaci on the thigh, who promptly keeled down before me. Mounting her, I quickly noticed something wrong with Amonea. She too, began to walk towards Cresselia in a trance. “Amonea?” I called, trying to see if I could snap her out of it. She quickly came to her sences, but she seemed to do it herself. That girl has some willpower. Then again, she is a ranger.

After snapping out of her trance, Amonea looked a little dazed, but did notice a young Poochyena standing next to her. Perhaps the crash piqued its curiosity, or maybe the end of the rainstorm brought it out from its home. Still, it was the first “normal” Pokemon that we have seen so far.

I remembered playing with another Poochyena back home in Hoenn. While they seem like fierce and dangerous Pokemon, most of them are actually quite sweet and docile. Not to mention, their evolved form, Mightyena, make very loyal and powerful partners for life.

I sent out Issac from its Pokeball. Now was the challenge of forming the right strategy. I noticed that all of us, including the Poochyena, were standing in a couple inches of muddy water. Muddy water, counter-intuitively, is actually a very good conductor of electricity. Clean water is actually a poor conductor. This gave me an idea.**

“Alright Kaci, I need you to take me into the air, just hover a little bit. Amonea, get out of the water, hurry!” Once everyone had cleared the area, I made my command. “Alright Issac, I need you to use Spark, but don't move!”

Electricity began to course through Issac's body. Normally, Issac would charge towards the Poochyena, and tackle him, discharging the Elecricity at the same time. However, why waste the effort when you can just have the water deliver the shock instead?

Sure enough, everywhere within the pool of water, electricity could be seen coursing through it from where Issac was, er, “standing.” This was why I made sure that nobody else was standing in the pool. I crossed my fingers, and hoped that my plan worked.

**OOC: I really am a chemistry major. You can trust me on this. ^_^

    Battle Post #1

Amonea scrambled out of the way, slipping on the muddy ground. She glanced up at the sun as she pushed herself up, wishing it would shine harder and suck all this damp away.

Cresselia, who had been looking down on everything, made a chortling sound and then...vanished. Amonea looked around for the legendary 'mon, her large eyes narrowing. She was curious, certainly, and suspicious, but she had other things on her mind.

She looked back in time to be blinded by a sudden blaze of yellow light. At the same time, she heard a crack split the ear and a horrible howling. Blinking rapidly, she regained her vision, except for a few floating black spots.

The first thing she registered was an angry Poochyena, screaming his pain and rage as he splashed out of the slight puddle he was in and onto the somewhat dryer ground around him. His eyes narrowed and he let out a deep, deep growl. Suddenly, in what seemed like only a half-second's time, he was charging at the Electrode. Before Electrode could roll out of the way, Poochyena sank his fangs into the great round Pokemon's skin. His great fangs only caused thin scratches on Electrode's thick skin.

I don't like Electrodes. Not very safe Pokemon. Usually pretty immature. Too many explosions, Amonea thought. She started to walk even further away from the fight when a shrill cry made her jerk her head up. Kaci, she well knew, had released that cry. Something about the Electrode's attack had bothered him, for he was falling quite suddenly from the air.

With a great splash, he landed in the puddle of water, soaking Electrode and Poochyena in brown water. Crying his pitiful wail, he began to rub his eyes vigorously. Nick had landed a couple feet away from Kaci. Since they had only been five feet or so high in the air, Amonea wasn't too worried about her trainer.

What did worry her was the fact that Poochyena had turned his wrath on Kaci. "Kaci! Move!" Amonea yelled. Kaci glanced at her, his eyes red and wet. Already, Poochyena was bending low, getting ready to jump and bite the poor Dragonite.

Amonea dug her hands in her pockets, trying to find Kaci's ball in time...

“Kaci? Kaci?!?” I cried as the Dragonite gave a spine-tingling wail and rocked back and forth in the air. Struggling to hold on, I braced myself as Kaci fell to the ground. Upon impact, I was knocked off Kaci, landing a couple feet away in the mud. I quickly got to my feet, but placed too much weight on my bum ankle, causing myself to double over in pain. Well that was dumb of me I thought to myself, wincing in the pain.

All of a sudden, the Poochyena turned its attention to Kaci. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Amonea fumbling in her pockets, most likely for Kaci's ball. There wasn't enough time. I needed to act fast...

Studying Pokemon habitats with Professor Birch in Hoenn has given me a heightened awareness of the surrounding terrain. Using the same strategy as before won't work this time, as Poochyena was on dry ground now. Plus, any random Electric attack would probably send both me and Kaci to the hospital. I needed to hit Poochyena with an electric attack, but not allow any of the electricity to make a path into the water.

Well, it's a risky plan, but its the only one I had. First, I had to get Issac out of the water, otherwise any sparks coming off of it would surge through the puddle.

Acting fast, I got Issac's attention. “Issac, get out of the water. Use Magnet Rise!”

Harnessing the Earth's own magnetic field, Issac slowly rose out of the water, rising a mere couple feet. The next part would be the risky part. Poochyena is about leap up at Kaci, and when it does, I will command Issac to use Charge Beam while Poochyena was in the air.

“Issac, use Charge Beam! You know what to do!”

In the meantime, I made a run for it. I wasn't about to be standing in this puddle if the Charge Beam misses...

Kaci let out a very sudden and shocked squeal. He wasn't normally one to shake over every little turn of events, but nor was he prepared to see a strong, vicious lookin' little dog glaring him down. His heart took a quick jolt as he fought the slippery mud and finally scrambled out of the puddle, his great tail sending water flying everywhere.

Amonea had finally found his Pokeball. With great haste, she threw back her arm and released the ball. It threw through the air like a recently released spring. At the exact same moment, Poochyena pounced, intent on sinking his fangs on the fat behind of Dragonite. Adding to the sudden rush of events, Issac released a thin stream of pearly light, directed at where it assumed Poochyena would be in a mere second.

To make things quite clear and so there is no confusion, the following events happened: Kaci's Pokeball struck Poochyena, sucking it into its thick plastic casing with a loud snap!; the Charge Beam struck the Pokeball, making it shake violently as tiny lightnings crawled all over it; and the Pokeball, now a hot and burning sphere, struck Kaci, who in turn bellowed his rage and clutched at a brand new welt on his right shoulder.

A huge explosion of light in blindingly bright reds and yellows occurred and when Amonea opened her eyes, near blinded for the second time in five minutes, she discovered a sick burning smell of plastic and the remains of Kaci's Pokeball, a useless, twisted mound of black and red.

Poochyena was now shaking, his eyes burning a hateful--and, strangely enough, a slightly puzzled, wary look. He raced over the puddle, away from Kaci and turned his full attention to the floating Electrode. He then began to howl, at first a loud and strong cry, and then a low, thin moan. He kept constant eye contact with Electrode and flexed his muscles back and forth, slowly...

Amonea blinked. Electrode was spinning, its eyes rolling around weirdly. It was confused.

"Darn," she whispered. She'd never seen the like before. Shaking off the shock, she hurried around Nick and ran to Kaci, placing a cool hand on his cheek and talking soothingly to him.
