A Ranger named Tella was pacing back and forth in front of the massive front doors of an old, abandoned power plant. The sprawling five-story building's old, filth-streaked concrete façade and sturdy tinted windows gave the impression of a looming beast, but the imposing aura of the place barely seemed to faze her as she waited with apparent impatience for her task— guiding a new visitor to the Park through some of the Power Plant's corridors— to begin.

Perhaps twenty years of age, the young Kanto native had almond-shaped, dull blue eyes, and stood with an easy grace that would tell an unwary onlooker that she was maybe a dancer... but which would tell a warrior that here was a dangerous foe in her own right, even had she not had a full complement of six Poké Balls at her waist. One was full-sized and awaiting the return of her active Pokémon, while the other five were reduced to cherry-sized capsules and clasped securely into an understated but high-tech black belt that would eject them all at once in an emergency.

Tella's clothing was as understated and hyper-practical— almost combat-ready— as the belt that held her Pokémon partners. She wore a long-sleeved black jacket over a white shirt with what looked like a bulletproof vest in between. A pair of heavy-duty black polyester pants with perfectly fitted patches of Kevlar sewn onto them matched her black Tauros-leather boots, which were also strengthened with circular heavy-plastic reinforcements.

Off to one side was a female Machamp, a four-armed behemoth with greyish-blue skin who was sitting cross-legged on a patch of dead grass and watching Tella pace; she looked worried by Tella's apparent impatience.

"Champ?" she asked, looking at Tella, who paused long enough to nod briefly.

"I'm all right, Champ. I've simply got a lot on my mind."

"Champ! Champ, Machamp." The huge, muscled Pokémon grunted, rising to her feet with a gentleness unusual for her species. She strode over to Tella and wrapped the Ranger in a big, four-armed hug that was clearly Champ's attempt to comfort her Trainer.

Tella's mouth quirked upward at the corner ever so slightly, a rare expression that only her friends— her Pokémon— could produce. "Okay, okay, that's enough," she said, her tone very briefly wavering from its professional attitude to betray a little bit of amusement as she pulled away from her concerned Pokémon. "I said I'm all right!"

The distant sound of an approaching vehicle alerted Tella to the fact that her charge was finally here. There were a variety of vehicles that transported Pokémon Trainers from the Docks to the various regions of the huge National Park. The only thing the vehicles— some of which flew, others of which moved overland— had in common were that they were fast, efficient, and safe; but they didn't allow Trainers to do the quintessential Trainer thing: travel the landscape on foot, capturing Pokémon. So they were used to deliver the Trainers to locations where Rangers would monitor them and make sure nothing altogether terrible happened (to the Park or to the Trainer.)

Tella turned to watch the Trainer disembark: the information HQ had sent her named him Tamer Nassar. She hoped he wouldn't want to talk overmuch: she had been enjoying some much-needed solitude before the notification had come that she should meet this Tamer person near the abandoned power plant...

A young Pokémon Trainer from Kanto is sitting on the backseat of a Safari 4x4, the driver is a Park Official and Guide. Next to him sat his best friend and loyal companion, Ashthe Growlithe. With lots on his mind -and heart for what matters- Tamer set for his journey as a Pokémon Trainer. He has been dreaming about this for as long as he remembers. And just for a second, a mere second, Tamer closed his eyes and started reminiscing with a silly smile on his face, one that he can't whip off, or rather he doesn't want to. He finally feels alive. He was finally given the opportunity to become what he has always aspired to be.

    - "We have arrived sir.." A young man's voiced called while Tamer still had his eyes closed. "Sir?" He insisted.

Tamer opened his eyes, took a deep breath through his nose and exhaled through his mouth, rubbed his eyes with his right fist as he was stretching his left arm while yawning. The young Trainer then looked at his best friend sleeping on the chair next to him. He grinned, and started petting his puppy-dog Pokémon, Growlithe. His fur was clean and shiny, he looked a little bit bigger than a normal Growlithe should be. The Pokémon opened his eyes, looked at his trainer and yawned.

    - "It seems we have arrived Ash!" Tamer said in a gentle voice; his Pokémon barked in response, as if he was in agreement with his friend. "We have finally made it buddy!" Tamer continued as he was still petting Ash and scratching behind his ears.

Tamer and Ash jumped off the vehicle as it stopped, they turned around to their driver and thanked him gently. He turned around to see this girl, most probably around his age. She looked like she was in the army, with her practical gear, and heavy, almost-all-black attire except her white shirt. And there was a huge, four-armed Pokémon by her side, which appears to be her friend. The young trainer with his Growlithe approached her steadily.

The Trainer was wearing his regulars: a pair of standard-cut Jeans, a plain maroon T-shirt and his light-brown leather jacket, and his custom adventurer backpack, made for Pokémon Trainers' uses mostly. He noted that his white and red tennis-shoes are untied so he bent down, did it in a second, looked Growlithe in the eyes and grinned. "Let's go buddy... she's waiting!" He whispered to his beloved puppy. Ash looked at Tamer with amusement and barked as he wiggled his tail in joy and excitement. He seemed thrilled to be here with his trainer.

    - "Sorry for keeping you waiting." He initiated. "My name is Tamer, and this here is Ash!" Tamer continued.

    - "Grow! Grow!" Ash barked as he was wiggling his tail, as if presenting himself as well.

Looking in awe at the huge building behind the Ranger and her Machamp, Tamer was stunned. The massive building, at least five-stories high; the suffocating dark aura surrounding it, the filth and dirt. This building is no playground for sure; if the young trainer was to wander by himself it could be dangerous. He looked at his guide again and saw not even a hint of hesitation, she knows what she's doing and that was enough comfort for him to go on this adventure... in the Abandoned Power Plant.

Tella looked the visitor up and down, her fighter's instincts and analytical nature quickly supplying the first and most important item: he wasn't a threat to her. He seemed like the standard fare at the Park: an up-and-coming young Trainer, here for one of the National Park's introductory Beginner Runs— incidentally the Park's most affordable run type— to catch Pokémon and to learn the ropes for a future, more extensive visit. The workload for Rangers had increased ever since the implementation of the Beginner Runs, she gathered... but she wasn't complaining: after all, it was the increased traffic that had caused the Park to need more Rangers, and she'd been hired as part of the post-Beginner-Run wave of new Rangers.

The job came with perks such as free gear and supplies; a solid salary that was collecting dust and interest in an account somewhere; and most importantly the opportunity for solitude in between runs. Tella wasn't unhappy to be here, preparing to take one more bright-eyed, bushy-tailed teenager (or was he a little older? They all seemed to emanate youthful exuberance) through the Park... but she was looking forward to being left alone with just the wilderness and her Pokémon when it was over with.

But for now, she should at least focus on the task at hand. Broadening the scope of her observations, Tella took in Tamer's brightly coloured gear, his awed stare at the building behind her, and his evident bond with his Growlithe. There was nothing unusual about Tamer Nassar, but that meant there was also nothing threatening about the young man. Tella's fight-or-flight instincts would have kicked in by now if there were any indication that the boy was dangerous. Beyond that, he seemed like the kind of kid who would go wandering openmouthed through a new locale, enjoying the experience and utterly naive to the dangers around him. Here in the National Park, that was more or less okay: it's what the Rangers were here for, wasn't it? But she'd have to keep an eye on him.

"Tella," she introduced herself simply. "Welcome to the abandoned power plant. I trust you're familiar with the National Park's rules and regulations, so unless you have any particular questions, we'll get started right away."

With that, she walked up to the huge, rusted metal doors that towered fifteen yards high above the two Trainers and their Pokémon. "Give me a hand with this, will you, Champ?" she asked her partner.

The Machamp nodded briskly. "Champ!!" She took a position next to one of the doors, grabbed the handle— it fit in the Pokémon's four large hands perfectly, and would have dwarfed any mere human's— and began to strain backwards, muscles bulging as she pulled on the door. There was a metallic groan and the sound of rust grinding against rust; the immense portal began to budge, though not nearly enough to get it free of the other door, to which it was bound by rust and weeks (perhaps months or even years) of disuse.

Then, Tella, who had for some reason been spending this time performing a series of stretches and what looked like some kind of simplistic martial arts demonstration, strode up to the other door, wrapped both arms around it as if she were hugging it— her slender form looked ridiculous next to the massive handle— planted her feet, and hauled on it. Impossibly, the solid metal door, which couldn't weigh less than three or four tonnes, began to move as well. With both doors being pulled on, the grating, groaning sound of rust grinding against rust drowned out every other noise for a few seconds; then, with a shuddering creak of hinges and a shower of rust flakes from the place where the doors met, the portal began to open ever so slightly.

Tella and her Pokémon, both sweating now and digging deep furrows into the dense earth with their feet, continued to pull until a solid four yards separated the two doors, leaving a comfortable entrance into the vast building. Tella wiped one sleeve across her forehead, and grinned over at her Pokémon; the Machamp grinned back, her mood apparently improved as much as Tella's by the simple pleasure of exertion.

"In we go," Tella called. She didn't really look at Tamer when she spoke— she could easily have been talking to her Pokémon rather than to him, in fact— and she gave no sign of minding whether Tamer and Ash were following along as she walked through the doorway.

Inside, dim strips of emergency lights set into the walls illuminated a long, wide corridor with dirty black-and-white checkerboard tiling, a high ceiling, and doorways in the walls at irregular intervals. Every so often, a still-intact LED emitter in the ceiling cast a pool of light onto the floor of the otherwise dim hallway. So far in the distance that the checkerboard pattern blurred into indistinct grey on the floor and walls, the corridor branched into a T intersection.

A quiet, omnipresent hum filled the air, the sound of electricity being generated somewhere deep in the centre of the plant. Movement in the doorways indicated that wild Pokémon were about: here in the National Park, Pokémon weren't afraid of humans and only hid when predators were evident.

At the moment when Tamer would enter the building, a single Zubat, flying low, would swoop down from inside the newly opened doorway, disturbed by all the noise and screeching its displeasure. Dive-bombing Tamer and Ash— and for some reason ignoring Tella and Champ completely— the wild Pokémon would need to be evaded or fought off!

    - "Tella" she said calmly, as if having no interest Tamer. "Welcome to the abandoned power plant. I trust you're familiar with the National Park's rules and regulations, so unless you have any particular questions, we'll get started right away." She continued as she turned around and walked towards the gigantic, rusty metal entrance gate to the Abandoned Power Plant.

Both the Ranger and her Machamp companion started opening the heavy door, it seemed at the moment like a very difficult job to do. The door was a couple of tons easy, covered in rust. Even the gate's joints were filled with rust, it seems like it hasn't been opened in ages. Tella started stretching and warming up before taking on one of the handles, while Machamp was already working on the other. And with all they've got they started pulling so hard. The door screech and creaked as it opened slowly; the sound of rust grinding against rust gave Tamer the chills.

    - "Maybe we should have gone to a safer part of the park, don't you think so Ash!?" Tamer whisper to his loyal companion. Growlithe looked at his trainer and barker, he has always been the brave one in this relationship.

Tamer smiled, his friend's courage wiped the fear that ran into his system. The trainer got on one knee and started petting Growlithe, the later started wiggling his tail in joy. He can still remember the first time he met Growlithe, four years ago. It was also then, his bravery, that saved the day. Even as a newly born pup he had almost no fear, he saved Tamer life back then, and he still does even now. Their relationship was not that of a Pokémon Trainer and his Pokèmon; it was deeper than that, it had history. Growlithe was not given to Tamer by a Pokémon Professor, or a Pokémon Trainer's School.

All of a sudden, the door cracked open. Both the Ranger, Tella, and her brute of a Pokémon partner, Machamp, were sweating. That portal took a lot of their energy and strength in order for it to open again after all the time it has been closed. They looked at each other and grinned. Tamer felt that - even with the heaven and earth difference between him and Tella- they are close partner, just like him and his beloved Growlithe, Ash.

    - "In we go!" the Ranger called, not even looking back at Tamer.

She still gave no sign of interest. She walked right in with her partner, and all Tamer could do is follow her orders without questioning them, or hesitating. He felt that the moment he hesitates, he will be abandoned by Tella. He walked right after her with Ash by his side. With steady steps, a bit of curiosity and a hint of fear in his eyes they entered the Abandoned Power Plant.

The moment Tamer and his Pokémon step a foot inside the Power Plant a Zubat flew directly at him. Not even having the chance to check his surrounding, the Trainer lowered his head as the attacking Bat Pokèmon tried to dive-bomb him and Ash. Easily evaded, Tamer raised his head again and grinned. He looked at Ash who was grinning too, wiggling his tail and barking.

    - "This is going to be fun Ash!" Tamer said with a delighted tone. "Let's show this Zubat what you're made of buddy... Flamethrower attack!!" Tamer continued with a cry as he pointed at Zubat with his right-hand index finger.

Growlithe looked at his partner, grinned and barked. He jumped in front of Tamer and looked at Zubat. The puppy Pokémon started gathering energy, his furry coat started to shine more than it normally is. The area surrounding Growlithe started to heat up, the different in tempruture between the fiery Pokémon's battle zone and the rest of the Power Plant was evident. The air around him started to become a little bit hazy due to the difference. Growlithe opened his mouth and small dots of red, orange and yellow started forming.

    - "GROWWW!" Ash, the Growlithe, cried loud.

Flamethrower was Ash's signature attack, and Tamer knew its power perfectly well. The attack was magnificent. A powerful, and intense, stream of fire rushed out of Growlithe's widely-opened mouth. The heat was unbearable; it is an attack that Tamer sometimes felt it's extreme heat outdoors, having done it indoors was probably not the smartest idea, but it was the most effective one. The stream of a tri-colored flame of orange, red and yellow - with a haze of white and blue around it - moved directly towards the flying bat Pokémon, Zubat.

Screeeeee! screeched Zubat, flapping its way around to make another dive-bombing pass at the intruders who had disturbed its sleep.

Its fluttering approach, though, was met by a torrent of fire that took the creature by surprise. Any wild Pokémon that enjoyed a good battle was familiar with Electric-types that shot bolts of lightning, but there was always that telltale hum that warned an opponent to take evasive action. Zubat had never seen an attack like this before, and that proved to be a dangerous disadvantage: the flames splashed across its face and wings, painting them with burns!

In a panic, Zubat flapped wildly at the flames and completely failed to arrest its own forward momentum; instead of aborting its plunge toward Ash, it lost control and bounced right off of Ash's head, wings flailing and smacking Ash across the face several times as the bat Pokémon sailed away; still unable to stop, Zubat kept going and careened into the wall behind Ash. There it clung: burned, dazed, and unsure even of which way was up...

    - "Aye!!" Tamer cried as the Zubat bounced off of his head, barely missing him. "That could have been dangerous!" He continued as he looked at Zubat.

The small bat hit the wall, it surely felt and tasted the pain of being burnt. The attacked made full contact; the magnificent Flamethrower hit Zubat head on. It took him by surprise, it hit him violently and it did cause damage to both its body and psych. Nevertheless, Tamer felt that it would be an insult to the wild Pokémon if he is to quit now, or pity him and feel sorry for what's happened. He turned and looked at Growlithe and smiled.

    - "Well done buddy!" Tamer said.

He walked past the fallen Zubat, and towards his partner and companion. He looked at the winged Pokémon and smiled at him, as if encouraging him to keep on, as if telling him that the fight is not over, and it won't be over. It was as if they both connected, maybe not! Who knows!? Tamer bent and petted his Growlithe then walked behind him and stood there. Him and his dog are both facing Zubat now.

    - "Ash!" Tamer cried. "Take Down attack... now!" He asked of his Pokémon in such enthusiasm and joy.

It was as if they both we enjoying this fight, this battle. Tamer has always wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, perhaps even a Pokémon Master one day. He really wanted and dreamt of being the best there is. He knows that a Pokèmon Battle is not violent, it is not vulgar, and it is defiantly not an abuse to Pokèmon. They fight together, the feel pain together, they taste their losses and victories together.

Growlithe took aim, he focused all his senses at Zubat. He took couple of steps back and lowered his head and torso a little bit, as if he is a wild feline, preparing to pounce its prey. And with a loud roar, Ash took off and charged at his enemy with full speed and throttle, hoping not to miss. Both Ash and Tamer know that this attack is almost uncontrollable, it causes heavy damage on both the attacker and the receiver. Leaving behind him a small cloud of dust, Growlithe can be barely seen now, he looks like a shot cannon ball.

The Zubat, disoriented and shocked by the incredible speed with which he had lost the advantage, struggled to flap upright while Tamer moved over to his Pokémon. The bat wasn't down for the count, though, not yet! The powerful opponent halfway across the hallway from it was a challenge, true, but...

Oh, wait, Zubat noticed with a sinking feeling. That opponent wasn't across the hallway anymore; the Growlithe was already blurring toward him at ludicrous speed, much more quickly than the confused, off-balanced wild Pokémon could dodge. So Zubat did the only thing he could think of: opening his mouth wide, he blasted the air in front of him with a chaotic mess of sonic and ultrasonic sounds, like five dissonant dog whistles at once combined with a high-pitched screech. The sonic maze was one that, once heard, could trick the brain and fool an opponent's ears into hearing phantom noises of approaching attacks that weren't there.

This last-ditch defensive measure wasn't effective in keeping Zubat safe: although the Supersonic technique did manage to affect Ash, the Growlithe was tearing with wild abandon through the mad trick room of sounds at such high speeds that he couldn't have stopped even if he wanted to. By the time the confusion took hold, he was already slamming right into the Zubat, bashing the bat against the wall again and nearly knocking the wild Pokémon unconscious with the sheer amount of dazed shock he was in!

Ash, hitting the wall as well— albeit much less hard, with Zubat cushioning his impact— bounced back, ready and eager to continue the battle. He was confident in himself, and willing to do whatever it took to make sure Tamer was confident in him, too!

Tamer was watching his Pokémon charging as fast he could towards the Zubat. Not a single thought crossed his mind in that moment, yet everything seemed much slower than it is, as if someone is playing the scene in his head in slow-motion. His excitement and thrill was indescribable. His companion, and partner, is impressive for a non-evolved Pokémon. He is brave, and as strong as a puppy could be. That slow-motion moment ended in a second, yet it felt like eternity. The Pokémon Trainer started recalling the day he met Ash, his loyal Growlithe.

Tamer smiled and was filled with enthusiasm the moment Take Down made a direct contact with Zubat. The latter's attack did no physical damage to Ash, but it did cause him to land poorly and slam into the wall, hurting him even a bit more than a Take Down should. The young Trainer took out of his Backpack a specially made Pokéball, made for this Pokémon Park, and was given to him upon entering the main gates. No Pokémon Trainer is allowed to use any other sort of Balls to capture Park Pokémon. Tamer clicked on the central button, and it simply enlarged - just like a regular Pokéball.

    - "I hope we can become friends... Zubat!" Tamer said gently as he threw his Park Ball towards the fallen, injured and burnt flying bat Pokémon, Zubat.

Zubat let out a confused squeak as the ball, tossed underhanded, bounced off of its little round body. Disappearing into the Park Ball in a swirl of red light, Zubat barely even had the strength to struggle.

The ball twitched once, a token effort, and then fell quiescent as the injured Zubat sank with relief into the cool peace of stasis that the ball offered.

    Encounter Over! Zubat: Caught!

After a few seconds outside of the chaos of battle, Ash managed to shake off the confused noises that were playing in his ears. He yapped once and jumped up to place his paws on Tamer's knee, eagerly seeking praise for his impressive performance!

Up ahead, Tella had turned and had been watching the lopsided battle swiftly resolve itself. She opened her mouth, as if considering saying something, then closed it. Her expression remained neutral— it gave away nothing of whatever had been going through the Ranger's mind.

"Machamp?" asked her Pokémon in a gentle, querulous tone of voice.

"...Right, Champ," Tella said, turning to the hulking Fighting-type. "This way, Tamer Nassar. We're headed for one of the major rooms of the Power Plant that's closest to the main entrance: the coolant filtration sector."

The Ranger led the way down the grimy, dirt-strewn hallway toward the T intersection far in the distance. Along the way, empty doorways— their metal doors long since gnawed away by hungry Magnemites and other hungry Steel-types— led into darkened storage rooms, smaller hallways, and even at one point what looked like a mess hall for the Power Plant's long-gone employees. Pokémon, inhabitants of the Power Plant which didn't seem interested in interfering with the intruders, lurked in these rooms, visible only as an occasional shifting movement. Park rules were clear: wild Pokémon that showed no curiosity or interest in a battle were to be left alone, so these mysterious silhouettes weren't valid quarry for Tamer's hunt.

Upon reaching the T-intersection, Tella and her Pokémon turned right, moving down another long hallway and preceding Tamer and his Growlithe through one last doorway. This doorway opened into a large chamber with a very high, almost three-story ceiling and a line of shattered windows along the top of the far wall.

Inside of this gigantic, dimly lit room, rusty cylindrical tank upon rusty cylindrical tank of some unknown liquid were sitting, percolating quietly. The tanks stretched almost all the way to the high ceiling— each one was easily ten metres tall— and they lined all three walls aside from the one that held the door Tella and Tamer had come through. From an extensive set of pipes that linked the huge tanks together, there emanated the sound of flowing water: whatever liquid was in there, it was moving.

    "Geo! Geo! Dude!"

    CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK!
    SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK!

The shout of a Pokémon, and an awful, nails-on-chalkboard screech of rust, alerted the Trainers to what was going on in a small spotlight of sunlight halfway across the room to their right. In the ray of light were three Geodude with silvery streaks through their rocky bodies and with iron filings clinging to them in the shape of spiky black eyebrows and "hair". Each one was clinging with one arm to a pipe or other handhold, while tugging with the other at a rust-caked wheel on the side of one of the tanks: a wheel that was just above a heavy-looking steel faucet.

The Geodudes looked to be playing: they were trying to make the wheel turn, enjoying the terrible noises it made when it did. With one pulling, one pushing from the other side, and the third hanging its entire not-insignificant weight off of the wheel, they all grunted with exertion at once— "Geo!"— and the wheel made another horrible rusty SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH... before loosening all the way and snapping off of the tank entirely, leaving behind an axle that jutted out of the tank at a right angle.

The Geodude which had been hanging off of the wheel scrambled for something to hold onto, and grabbed the axle to prevent itself from falling with the wheel. The axle promtly slid out of its lodging in the tank, sending that Geodude tumbling to the ground alongside the slender rod of metal and the rusty wheel.

Immediately, a torrent of horrible sludge-filled water began to pour out of the faucet underneath the spot where the wheel and axle had been. In an attempt to stop the flow of water, one of the Geodudes launched itself at the faucet and grabbed it, viewing the machine as some kind of attacking Water- or Poison-type Pokémon: but the faucet merely snapped off as the rusty nails holding it in place gave way, leaving behind a circular hole in the base of the tank. Without the faucet to modulate the outpouring, the murky water rushed forth even more quickly, like an exploding fire hydrant of pure poison! The flood of high-pressure sludge smashed into the Geodude that'd attacked the faucet, and sent it skidding— still holding onto the faucet— all the way across the room and into a tangle of pipes.

The other two magnetic Geodude, clearly panicking and unsure what to do, grabbed the rusty wheel and the loose axle respectively, and rolled into hiding underneath two different tanks.

Tella's eyebrows rose with muted surprise, forming the closest thing to a genuine facial expression Tamer had yet seen from the stoic Ranger. "...Well. Those are the coolant filtration tanks. If that sludge continues to drain, there'll be no coolant left after a day or two, and the Power Plant will probably explode within the week. We'll need to get those parts back, and fix the tank."

She walked across the room, careful not to get too close to the awful-smelling liquid sludge that was jetting forth from the broken faucet and spreading to cover the floor; approaching one of the other cylindrical tanks, one that one of the Geodudes had hidden under, she bent over to peer underneath. "We aren't small enough to reach under the tanks or into that tangle of pipes; one of us will need to flush the Geodudes out while the other defeats them and reclaims the items. What say you, Tamer?"
