"Gross..." mumbled Ranger Bradley, stretching his shirt collar and fanning himself with his cap, "this place is gross." The Ranger was sure he would probably combust or melt or both in the middle of this visit, so it didn't matter that much. He went ahead and hooked his cap on a post near the large entry gate and walked just inside to wait for his Trainer. He unzipped his overalls and half wiggled out of them, tying the arms around his waist to keep them out of the way, then slouched and sweated while unhappily staring up at the ash and smoke emanating from the caldera. "This is sure no Snowbelle, I'm not made for this. Gordie would boil, and.... I don't wanna see or smell a boiling Muk. Better keep him in his Pokéball for sure."

"Jeez, I hope he doesn't wanna try to go all the way up to the top today." Bradley took a strawberry hard candy out of his pocket and unwrapped it, sure the self-administered bribe would melt from the heat on the journey from hand to mouth. Miraculously it didn't, and the Ranger stood up a little straighter and tried to wait for his guest a little more professionally.

A somewhat tall teenage boy approaches the waiting Ranger, feeling a bit nervous despite the entire Park positively teeming with Pokémon. "H-hello?" he tentatively calls out to the Ranger in front of him, giving a half-hearted wave.

A Dragonair slithers up behind Matthew, sensing his fear. "Shhh...you'll do fine," she reassures.

Matthew glances over his shoulder and nods at the draconic snake before looking back at the Ranger. "I was told to meet a Ranger here for guidance through the mountain. Might that be you?" he asks.

While asking that, a Togetic flies over, landing near the two Trainers. "Hi!" she chirps jubilantly.

"Er...and these are the two Pokémon I brought. Haku..." Matthew starts, motioning to the Dragonair coiled up behind him. "...and Eggshell," he finishes as the bird-fairy waves. "I figured they'd both enjoy this more than the constant battling I tend to do back home."

Both Haku and Eggshell nod, although Haku was less nodding and more shifting her weight as she coiled a bit looser.

"I'll take that as a yes," Matthew adds with a chuckle. "But back to my original question: are you the Ranger I was supposed to meet up with?"

"Hello! Yes I'm your Ranger, my name is Bradley, it's nice to meet you and your Pokémon," Bradley replied with a smile, happy to greet a new Trainer. He immediately noticed the huge serpentine Dragon Pokémon accompanying its Trainer, as well as the considerably more pint-sized but plucky looking Fairy that swooped over in kind. "It's nice to see a Fairy-type and a Dragon-type getting along, I hope they don't butt heads too often. I imagine not since they seem so well behaved! I wish I could say the same for my own Pokémon, but I do have one or two troublemakers," he explained with a grin, "they're worth the hassle though."

"So you wanted to check out Mt. Deckbi, eh? I must admit I find myself rather immune to its charms, but you can rely on me during your visit nonetheless. If you're so inclined you can forge the path ahead yourself, or I can lead you to wherever you may want to go. There are all sorts of places, and Pokémon, here on Deckbi. We could find some secluded grass or trees, follow the trail up, explore a cave, or maybe even stumble upon a fresh crag! Unfortunately it will only get hotter from here on though," he half-joked. "What is it that drew you to the mountain in the first place, if I may ask?"

Haku looks up at the mountain, feeling oddly at home with its warmth and height.

"To answer your first question, I'm figuring I would just follow a path you had in mind," Matthew reasons. "After all, I'm kinda new here."

"We should climb it!" Eggshell suggests, motioning to the trail.

"Well, I guess I know where Eggshell wants to go," Matthew observes with a laugh. "What about you, Haku?"

The Dragonair just waves her tail around in an approximation of a shrug.

"...I guess we'll be climbing it today. Anyway, since you asked why I decided to come here...I've always liked Fire-types. My first Pokémon was a Cyndaquil that a friend brought from his trip to Johto, and ever since I've liked Pokémon related to heat and fire."

Matthew could've continued with his talk, but Haku slithered up at that point. "No need to tell him your life story, Matthew. We should get going."

Matthew sighs. "...guess I shouldn't be rambling. I'm ready whenever you are to start climbing, by the way."

“Oh, I’m a patient man so don’t mind me,” Bradley explained as he casually waved his hand, “anyway it’s your trip. So up Deckbi we’ll go!” The Ranger mustered what enthusiasm he could to match the Trainer and his Pokémon despite the heat. “Just make sure your trays are in their upright positions, and in the event of an eruption mind the chunks of rock and lava,” he half-joked turning towards the mountain.

Bradley lead Matthew, Haku, and Eggshell forward into the park. Around the gate some more hardy grasses and plants still peppered the dry ground, but once one left the entrance and headed towards Deckbi itself the ground began to seem naked and bare as it took on a reddish hue. The trail leading towards and up the mountain was wide. Bradley imagined it being wide enough for a stampede of Ponyta or a rockslide of Graveler and nervously rubbed his neck as he looked up at the volcano. Instead of trees boulders stood up out of the ground, and patches of rock and gravel covered the soil rather than grass. The incline of trail was negligible as the group still had a few minutes of hiking before they’d start to reach Mt. Deckbi proper but the ground either side was becoming uneven and looked unweathered, hinting at the volcano’s very active past.

“I always liked Cyndaquil, not because of being a Fire Pokémon or anything like that, but because it looks cute and sleepy. The mountain has a lot of Rock and Ground Pokémon as well, especially down low and living in the caves.”

Matthew looks at the scenery surrounding the mountain as it shifts from lush undergrowth to dark red earthy ground. "Well, no turning back now," he quips.

Eggshell nods as she flies up in front, also taking in the sights. "Hopefully we'll find some good Pokémon." she says, looking over her shoulder at her Trainer.

Haku nods as she slithers after the three, hoping to not get into too big of a fight.

Matthew looks over at the Dragonair and rubs her neck affectionately. "So, Rock- and Ground-types?" he asks, hoping to strike up a conversation as they climb the mountain. "It'd be nice to see some of those that aren't just Roggenrola and Drilbur everywhere. I'll go out on a limb and assume that there are Fire-types here too, given the guide I saw when I was at the docks," he assumes.

"Roggenrola?" Haku echoes. "What're they like?"

"...oh yeah, I'm not in Unova anymore," Matthew says after realizing his mistake. "Roggenrola are kinda like walking rocks with a hole in the middle. And before you ask, no, I don't know what it's for. As for Drilbur, they're little moles that can use their claws as drills. Both of them are annoyingly common fixtures in Unovan caves, so hopefully I'll find something a bit more exotic if we go into the tunnels here," he explains. He then turns to look at Bradley. "Any other Rock- or Ground-types I'd be likely to find here?"
