I like the idea, elaborating more here. Also Woo, another Soulmaster TC Post! :/

So, URPG Census 2015. I figure post a thread in General, or just the main forum, with a google form or s/t with a list of questions for you to answer.
Tentative list

List with fairly basic census stuff, plus one or two URPG Things.

So, thoughts/additions to said list? Also suggesting each person that responds gets 1k or something.

 

This has been done before, take a look at the previous years for more ideas.

 

I don't know, Monbrey. The previous polls were never that detailed.

We could probably use the data to better determine what demographics to target for future recruitment drives.

Swift: They could be. It is my current idea for someone to set up a Google Form to do this. But, if you want to claim voting money(they had some last time) you would have to somehow let me/whoever does this that you submitted. Unless we want to do away with voting money but I doubt it.

 

No lol not everything people do needs rewarding, but I was thinking people would be more inclined to help out if fit was anonymous so that's good. Also I think we can cut ethnicity since, as fawkes said with occupation, it isn't relevant.

 

I agree with this being anonymous! I also agree with no pay for responding. Getting rewarded for just stating who you are is... a troublesome situation.

Also, I think it's important to ask about ethnicity. There are challenges in asking this question because of how different countries come to categorize this but I think it's important to ask anyway. Many prospective players find solace in a community that includes other people like them. I also think that being culturally sensitive is a step in the right direction towards showing that URPG is an all-inclusive and welcoming community for all.

I can see why some people would want to know education level and occupation. Judging the intellectual rigor of the community, etc. I think those become salient when you look at the stories and the art pieces and get onto the main chats, so I don't think we'd need to include these two. Plus, then you run into questions of socioeconomic status and that may be too much.

 

I don't really care one way or the other about this, I'll probably fill it out regardless, but I just wanted to chime in with this.

Y'all sound like you're shooting down occupation, which is understandable, but it sounds like y'all are more focused on irl occupation, not URPG occupation. Maybe something about the URPG occupation would be better and more suited towards the URPG? Could also make it something along the lines of "what occupations do you have?" and then a follow up question, "If any, which URPG occupations would you be interested in?" That might help us create some sort of training program for the people who are interested in specific occupations, but aren't that confident in doing it or whatever.

 

I can both agree and disagree with this post.

I 100% agree with ethnicity to be something important. It really gets us to know the player base, and can show people how diverse we are. Your listing are fine, but they need to include an "Other" and a "Prefer Not to Say"

The gender part is where I get iffy. I agree that all of those are possible choices, but I think that is just complicated. Having "Male, Female, Other, and Prefer Not to Say" seems like enough to me. But if others want what you mentioned we can use that. I also don't like open ended questions, makes tallying up a bit of a pain.

I can see the orientation being a good question. Again, as long as we include "Prefer Not to Say"


Fellz: We have that question. We can add "What Occupations do you look at getting." That could work nicely.


So am I hearing a no to submission money? I am fine with that. I agree that not everything needs something, but if you say that then take away WAR Bonus, FFA Friday, all Voting Money, etc. Same principle, we have the small bonus to encourage participation. So we either have No Money and Anonymous or Small Money and Known. I'm just here focusing ideas, y'all make the actual choices. And one person saying something and nobody posting afterwards is not a consensus, because that is what normally happens.

 

Oh, okay, never mind me, I didn't read the questions fully, haha.

As for submission money, I'm going to have to go with a no on that as well. The FFA bonus was just a trial thing anyways, and I believe that's done and over with anyways. WAR is a pretty big event and one of the few that URPG does on other forums, the other being PWN's birthday extravaganza. We don't really give money for voting except in SWC/WWC, so I feel like that's not a huge deal either. Basically, I think we should limit the money to larger things like WAR/birthday extravaganza and SWC/WWC and other similar events. We don't want to give out too much easy cash; people should be able to do things without incentive.

 

I think it's fine to give money for this. The data will be useless unless we have a large enough sample size.

 

urpg awards gave voting money too so there is a precedent for something like this.

At the same time though, if I hit this question there's no inherent confusion or complication for me. I know I'm female, so I mark that, and just move on as I normally would. The only tradeoff is that I have to scroll maybe a half inch more to get to the next question, but that wouldn't bother me anyway since we're getting paid!! $$$

The array of options in the gender question aims to provide people who have, prolly for most of their lives, been forced into some mysterious, often stigmatized, "Other" category. If we're also planning to use this Census for marketing reasons, then simply providing those options shows the wider community that we're socially conscious and even more welcoming of a diverse range of people. This question would perhaps be just as important as the age question or ethnicity one.

I can tell that there's a lot of community hesitation with this for a variety of reasons. Perhaps we're not ready for the most socially... right answer for this question, even though providing more options has no consequence on the majority of us, so we can reduce the options to:

Also, I feel like I need to explain why listing all of these facets of identity is important. There's real research in academia that shows that a fully-disclosed environment, whether that's a neighborhood or workplace or virtual space, leads to greater camaraderie among community members, increased productivity, greater sense of belonging, and often an increased innovation in projects because you're taking more insight from a range of people who are encouraged to use experience from their diverse backgrounds for use in those projects. blah blah blah I actually study this so I know soooo much skdhfjksdhf but I promise this is all actually real

So I think that at the end of the questionnaire we have a "Say Your Username If You Want to be paid" or something. That way they can still be anonymous if they want. Again, honor system, but I think we're good enough. And payment being 3k for participating.

The only issue I see with Birthday is that BMGf Will say who's birthday it is, sure you can turn that off but not everyone knows that, maybe you should just ask for the year?

 

I think birthday should just be optional. Some people don't feel like telling theirs so they should be allowed not to.

 

Every question is optional. You may skip any you want, it is just suggested you do the entire thing. But yes, I agree. Though skipping too many would likely be less pay, but I doubt that would be an issue.
