It got me thinking, what does the URPG need to add some spice. Look at what we got, a Battle center, Contest center, a National Park and for 70% of my time here, I'm bored. There's got to be something else to put in the URPG to make mine and other's experience more adventurous. And I thought, add the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Just think of it, in addition of battling and contests, we can battle through text with text-based cards. This is how to will work:

First we need to get cards! You can buy cards from booster packs at the Pokemart, or a future store if implemented. The booster packs contain 10 cards, that a clerk will roll ten dices to decided the cards gotten. Pre-made decks may also be bought with an entire deck of 60 cards, that are ready to play, but will cost you.

If you don't know how to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game, here are some highlights:
You must have 60 cards (a deck) to play. There are three types of cards: Pokémon cards, Energy Cards, and Trainer Cards. Pokémon Cards are the cards that attack the opponent's Pokémon cards. A maximum of six cards may be on your side; 1 active, 5 bench. The one active Pokémon is the attacking Pokémon and can only attack the opponent's active Pokémon. The bench Pokémon are not fighting but are in the battle. Energy cards are cards that you attach to Pokémon cards. They supply the Pokémon with energy to do basically anything, from attacking to retreating. The little circles with color next to the attacks are the energy cost. For example if I want my Charizard to use Flamethrower, but Flamethrower need two Fire Energy (looks red) and a Colorless Energy (looks white with a black star). This means that Charizard need two Fire Energies and another random energy. Colorless Energy are special because they can be replaced by any type of energy. So if Charizard has two Fire Energy and a Water Energy, he can use Flamethrower. But what if I want to switch Charizard with my Blastoise that is in my bench, that's called retreating. I must pay the price. Charizard's card says two Colorless Energy for retreat. So I may give up A Fire and Water Energy to switch it with Blastoise. Trainer cards are special cards that help you in battle, by adding special effects, like making you get two more cards or healing your Pokémon.

So now that you know the three types of cards, this is how you play. In the beginning, you shuffle your deck (60 cards) and then draw (get) 7 cards from the top. The cards you are saving are called your hand, because you keep them in your hand. Look at your hand. If you have any basic Pokémon, place at least one of them on the field as your active or a bench Pokémon. Basic Pokémon are unevolved Pokémon and can evolve into Stage 1 Pokémon and Stage 1 can evolve into Stage 2. The cards says whether if it's a Basic or Stage 1 or 2. If you have no basic Pokémon, put the cards back and shuffle your deck. Draw seven cards, and if there are any Basic Pokémon, place them on your field. If there aren't any, repeat the process until you do. After both players have their fields and hands set up. The prizes are drawn. Prize cards are set aside do that when you knock out one of the opponent's Pokémon, you choose one of your prize cards you have set aside for yourself. Tere may be 1- 6 prize card and the number is determined before the battle. You can't know what your prizes are, nor can your enemy. In the beginning of every of your turn, you must draw a card from the top of your deck. The players can't look at the other's prize cards , deck, or hand, that's cheating. As each player turn changes, There are four things you can do in your turn, attach energy cards, play trainer cards, Retreat Pokémon, and/or use an attack. Using a Pokémon's attack end's your turn, but you don't have to attack, just say you end your turn without attacking, in the case that you don't want to or you can't. You may only attack one energy card to only one Pokémon in your turn. The limit of trainer cards may vary depending on the type.

There are three ways to win: You just won your last prize card left, you just knocked out the last Pokémon on your opponent's field, or your opponent has no more cards in his deck when it's their turn to draw a card.

In this URPG version, the players PM their entire deck to the referee. The referee will PM them there hand. The referee and the player must keep track of their hand. When it's time for the player to draw, the referee will PM him the card he or she drawn. The referee also has to keep track of both of the players prize cards, so that when the player wants to choose the prize number and the referee must tell the player in a PM, the prize. In this version of the TCG, the players and referee must make sure that the other player doesn't know their cards.

In each player's turn, they must show a command prompt on what they are doing in the order of occurrence. For example:

Draw a card (This must always be here)
Attach a Grass Energy to Venusaur
Retreats Venusaur and dicards two Grass Energies
    Replaces Venusaur with Blaziken
Makes Blaziken use Blaze Kick (Ends the turn, you can say "Ends turn without attacking" if you don't what to attack.)

The referee will confirm the commands the player made. The referee unconfirms the command if it's illegal.
An example base on the example above:

Confirms (PMs the card to EmpireCrusher203)
    Confirms
    Confirms
    Confirms
Confrims: Blaziken did 40 damage on the opponent's Dusknior.

In the case that you draw a card(s) with a trainer card before the attack, you PM the referee before you post your attack on the battle thread, so you may know the cards you get.

    Now, thoughts?

Not only will people not do this because they have to buy stuff whose only function is for this (unlike battling, contesting or national Park in which one theoretically only needs the starter Pokemon) it will take forever to get stuff done / will be a logistical nightmare to keep track of this on IM.

I don't see your point. I'll very much love to be receiving these crap tons of IMs and PMs, however they can be annoying to some people.

How about this: the ref for the card battle, well since 60 cards are a lot, I'm thinking about $3000 wage per battle refereed.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Should a Traging Card Game Corner be Implemented?

I've thought about this, and it's a logistical nightmare to "ref" it. Is it possible? Yes. Is it practical? No. Consider all the things that have be kept track of, how you'll probably have to post all of them every turn, and how people who haven't memorized every single card in the game will have to look up half of them. It's not reasonable to ask people to do that. Plus, as LC said, it doesn't really fit in with URPG's current system because you would have to get a whole new set of "cards" to be used just for this, while the Pokémon you get from any other section can be used for battling, contests, and national park.

I honestly love the idea, but I agree with Ash in that it's very difficult to actually implement.

If I have some (a lot) of spare time, I'd be keen to try and make a very simple client for it. Would still require a ref to operate it, but I'm thinking it's possible.
A text document with 60 lines in it could easily represent cards to be used in the deck, as long as you followed correct naming. You provide your list to the ref and it gets uploaded into the "calc".

Re: Should a Traging Card Game Corner be Implemented?

True, but will the URPG have it's own cards, or cards based on the real thing in stores. I'm thinking the every Pokémon should have one card for it, to make it less nightmare to ref. A list of your battle deck and other cards should be documented in your stats.

Also, a calculator won't be needed, since the TCG requires second grade math to battle, but a ref would need a long list of all the cards released to do all the math. That would be a pain in the ref's butt as well as the players.

Also true Ash. The system does sound like a money making business than a fun mini game. How about this: Every URPG player has a choose to one of three starter decks (Grass, Fire, Water), which is like a pre made deck, but free :).

The idea is great since the cards are free and they are pre made, so no trouble with deck making and all that foolishness. The idea is great for poor newbs (like me) who rally can't afford to buy 6 text-based packs.

Another idea, the packs will cost around $500

Re: Should a Traging Card Game Corner be Implemented?

Yeah, calling it a calc is definitely the wrong word to use. However I honestly believe that without some sort of application to assist the ref in conducting the card game, manually managing a deck of 60 cards, bench, active, evolution, graveyard, prizes is a logistical nightmare.

While I would be interested in developing one for the URPG, it is certainly not a priority and would take me quite a long time to do.

The second question is how this would tie in to our current URPG dynamic. Other than using URPG funds to buy cards/booster packs, it would really have no link to the rest of the URPG at all, unless we invent our own card battling rules. For example, Pokemon in URPG have all their moves available. While I'm not suggesting we do that for cards also, some form of unique spin on the regular would make it a much more appealing option. Otherwise we might as well go play the official TCG game.

I have a solution! The cards will be original, to keep the uniqueness the URPG has and maintains.

If you think it's more than what you reckon for, I may help in the implementation of this into the URPG.

An idea! The list can exist in the URPG Dex. The cards may be listed in the Pokémon's dex entry, or create an entire new section to it just for the TCG's purpose

Re: Should a Traging Card Game Corner be Implemented?

I honestly do like this idea, but as of yet I see nothing that actually ties it into the way URPG works.

Currently, pretty much all methods of obtaining Pokemon are linked. Pokemon you get in the Park, Art or Stories can be battled with, contested with, taken out on new Park runs. You can use your Pokemon to earn money and pay for new park runs, EMs, new Mart mons. Everything is linked and tied in with each other.

This TCG idea really has no integration. It's a totally separate game type with totally separate Pokemon (cards), isn't supported by other Pokemon obtainment methods and therefore I can't justify it providing URPG rewards for participation.

The idea as it currently stands DOES NOT function as an integrated URPG section - feels much more like a URPG-themed side project, completely separate from the main game.

I get what you are trying to say, however I got nothing. This idea was meant to become a side game, an extra way to get money and have fun. I see absolutely see no way to intertwine this with the rest of the URPG. I got to keep thinking.

I've been thinking about it. Side game is fine, but a side game has to be TOTALLY separated from the main URPG economy. No free money or Pokemon etc.

if that's the case, you might as well make it a game of its own. there's zero overlap between urpg and the proposed tcg game, and implementing it as a side game is unnecessary and most likely decentralizing for both games.

Yeah pretty much. I'd consider putting some sort of URPG-spin on it, but it wouldn't be part of the URPG economy in any way. No URPG dollars to be spent on participation, no URPG Pokemon as prizes.
