(Other) So I was playing a wifi (cartridge) battle the other day... - Smogon Community

Reading the thread linked above made @Pidge and I actually do something and check it out in game to see whether Taunt and Encore really worked that way and we found out that they did!

The turn when taunt and encore are used still counts towards the three turns it is supposed to last if the Pokemon that used taunt and encore is faster than its opponent.

    Test from in game:

    Mienshao used Taunt
    Drifblim uses Spit Up (Fails)

    Mienshao used Bounce (goes up)
    Drifblim uses Spit Up (Fails)

    Mienshao used Bounce (hits)
    Drifblim uses Spit Up (Fails)

    Taunt ends

If the Pokemon that used Taunt and Encore is slower than its opponent, then the turn one of those moves is used does not count towards the three turns.

    Test from in game:

    Swellow used wing attack
    Minun used encore

    Swellow used Wing attack
    Minun used Nasty plot

    Swellow used Wing attack
    Minun used Nasty plot

    Swellow used Wing attack
    Minun used Nasty plot

    Encore ended

As you can see this is a very important change to battles so you better remember it!
(I will because I lost my BW Tourney match because of this :uhoh:)

Edit: I tagged every ref I could find that was active!

    @husnain is right.

All refs please take note of this, and battlers, please politely show refs this link if they are reffing it the old, wrong way.

I thought it's always been this way... since I've been reffing em this way. Maybe I'm just a pro ref.

Did you test Encore when it's faster and Taunt when it's slower? Because I don't want to assume that they work the same way...

And you all find it out now?
I knew this like when I reffed for the money, and some of you know how long that has been.

It's not as bad as reffing consecutive Protects/Detects wrong for the entirety of URPG in Gen 4. In Gen 3, the chance of those moves working in succession halved each time. In Gen 4, it is always 50% after the first use, but URPG was never notified about this change until around Gen 5. Although this was never really relevant unless someone tried to use Protect for the third time in a row in an FFA or something, so I guess it's not that big of a deal in retrospect.
