Everyone is always trying to create the craziest, funnest, and/or awful FFA rules. Well here is one I've done, I'll let you decide which category(ies) it falls into, probably the third:

    http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=2232938&postcount=312

Here is how the game was set up:

Each Pokemon was randomly assigned a position, and Pokemon can only target other Pokemon that are in the same row or column. You can move one cell (not diagonal) instead of using an actual attack if you want. Rows and columns may be deleted as the battle progresses. Stats posted separately.

Now, there are a lot of things that can be done with this new added 'dimension' of FFAs you could say. Feel free to share any ideas. You can also read some of mine.

    • Due to the limited range of targets, this kind of play may highly encourage tactics such as sitting back and boosting until the end. Think of a Bronzong with no Fire Pokemon in range to even try to stop it before it gets more than two Special Defense and Defense. Measures may be needed to prevent this from becoming too easy.
    • Certain cells can have certain special effects for Pokemon on them. A Pokemon on a cell may receive an attack boost, or heal a certain amount of HP each turn, or that Pokemon can be treated as though it is under rainy weather.
    • How Pokemon move can be changed. A Pokemon can move x amount of cells each turn. Maybe the x amount depends on your speed? Maybe some Pokemon can fly over another Pokemon to navigate over it? Maybe some cells cost more to move than others.
    • Targetting could be more complex. Earthquake could hit all Pokemon in a 3 square radius, or hit maybe all Pokemon in one direction. Maybe some attacks have a range, and can only hit a Pokemon 2 or 3 cells away. Maybe if a Pokemon moves out of the way of an attack, the attack hits the Pokemon that was behind it.
    • The concept of a team-based FFA (I know, oxymoron lol) could become more interesting.
    • Some cells could be unable to be navigated on (barriers), or only through breaking it with an attack dealing a certain amount of HP. Some may only allow Pokemon of a certain type to move on it, like water Pokemon on ocean.

Yeah so maybe all of that was stolen from Advance Wars or something, whatever. Basically, I'm asking what kind of things you would like to see for this style of FFA. Which ideas do you like or do not like? Which ones work? How can we make this game one where the most strategic people are more likely to win? Could trainers use more than one Pokemon, maybe even three? Also, suggest non board game style rules too.

I think the the rules you added would be an interesting way to force people into moving their mons around the board since in my opinion it was kind of treated like an afterthought in the ffa that actually happened.

Also another suggestion could be objective based ffas? where a few teams, i don't think it would work as well without teams, start in the same area and have to navigate across a board with whichever team gets there first winning. Maybe instead of being removed from the board when you are KO'd you'll just start from the beginning?

Another concept would be a capture the flag type thing where two teams have an area to defend. I'm not sure if it would work better with respawning after you were KO'd or once you're dead you're dead. The issue would be respawns. Although perhaps you could have to wait a few turns before respawning?

I dunno just some more works in progress I guess

Definitely like the certain range for different attacks. Though that would take a lot of work on someone's part.

We could almost do a rule where you move <and> attack per turn. I don't know if any of you have played some of the Fire Emblem games, but it could be like that, only you have to do both. It wouldn't matter what one you did first. It could open up some strategy opportunities. Just an idea. I'm sure there'd be issues with it (ie, if two people tried to move to the same place, unless a ref told them that space was unavailable or something).

This FFA was a lot of fun.

Anyone here played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon? I think the most sensible thing to do would be to have the moves work similar to how they did in that game. That way, we have a premise to work with, resulting in it being less complicated, and trainers actually having a clue what they're doing. Also, maybe a bigger board would be a good idea. Moves could do less damage the further away they are (at least ones that go for more than 1 sqare), but keep the values they had in the original games.

Well, I played it once, and I think it could work out, so what might be a good system for this would be that each Pokemon can move a set ammount of spaces depending on their species and speed stat, then attack.

People could send specific directions like:
    2 North
    1 East
    Use Thunder Bolt on Gyarados

...and then they attack from the square they end up on, with their range depending on the move they just used. They can't move into a square that already contains a Pokemon. Any battles that take place when someone is attacking or defending from a special space like a Rain space are effected by said space.

Also, an interesting clause would be a Traps Clause, as in any Pokemon that steps onto a trap will be effected by it. These traps would become visable only after a Pokemon activates them, and could have harmful effects like Toxic or Paralysis. Of course, certain types and abilities would grant immunity to these.

Another thing that might work is if special spaces lose their effect if they reach a certain number of turns battled on. This would vary from space to space.

Finally, ANOTHER special rule would be that the ref gets to control a "Reaper" Pokemon, that must attack the closest potential Pokemon (roll a dice if there are two). If the reaper is KO'd, the Pokemon who did it gets a stat bonus, or heals, and a new reaper spawns. The Reaper could be any mon in the ref's stats. The only problem there might be with this is a bias against certain people or Pokemon. If most things were decided by random dice rolling, that might work.

This type of thing might require an entirely new thing if we decide to make it too complex, as not all the refs would pick it up so quickly.

Wow, simple idea gone over-complicated. I like the decission as a whole. Someone should do one of these now :3

I liked the idea of being able to dodge attacks. Without really knowing your dodging an attack. ( Moving squares.)

I had fun with this, besides the whole ganging up on me thing. Some of these ideas are pretty cool. i'm sure some interesting things will come from this.

Also, I called it. Gardevoir won because people were too busy killing me to stop it from boosting. And you guys told me you would be able to handle it ;)

lol @ second comment, that seems all to common in FFAs... I like LightningFast's idea about using the Mystery Dungeon system. ~There is the slight problem of not knowing how Judgement works in Mystery dungeon if Smeargle/Arceus uses it or it is Metronomed...~

I like the idea though, I'm not sure if the term Free For All is even applicable to something like this...

PIDGE THE ALMIGHTY, YOU HAVE DONE YOUR WONDEROUS THING BY THINKING OF THIS NEW SYSTEM!

    This.

I love the concept of people actually having to work out strategies in FFA's, instead of just boosting stats and sweeping. It reminds me a lot of Mystery Dungeon. There should be Monster Houses. Maybe have a random tile (or two) that contains a Monster House. Perhaps multiple monsters, controlled by the ref) could be scattered around all or most of the unused tiles. Extra money won't need to be given or anything, but it stops people finding a nice quiet corner and stating up.

    I think traps in general would also be a nice thing to include. Particularly those explosion traps that take away a set amount of HP (50%) to Pokemon in a one-tile radius of the trap. Or maybe the power could be the same strength as an Electrode's Explosion JUST CAUSE. Also, Ghosts aren't immune to the blast ^_^;

And, how about them gummi's? You know the things that increase intelligence. They could boost a random or a set stat depending on the gummi colour or type. Say blue could boost Sp. Attack or something. Berries would be really fun to include. Especially the ones that confuse the user, but heal 10% (can't remember the names) or using Rest on a Chesto Berry Tile :D

One last thing. How will Roar and Whirlwind, aswell as Spikes, Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes be handled? Whirlwind and Roar could send them back 3 tiles depending on what direction they're facing. Steatl Rocks, Spikes and Toxic Spikes could take up a certain tile and their effects come into play when someone is blown onto or walks onto one of those tiles. Levitate and Flying Types would be immune of course :p

    So, comments on these ideas?

At the rate these ideas are coming, we very well might have to come up with a new section for battling XD.

    Positive Tiles Effects:
*Item- Allows for the use of a randomly-rolled Item for that turn (such as Leftovers or Life Orb, also includes things like Flame Orb though :p)
*Stat Booster- One random stat gets +6 for that turn
*Ability Swap- Replaces the Mon's Ability with a different one for that turn (rolled by the ref)

    Negative Tile Effects:
*Status Fiend- The Pokemon is inflicted with a random status, EVEN IF IT WOULD NORMALLY BE IMMUNE (like Limber Persian could be Paralyzed). Effect lasts until cured or the end of the battle
*Reverse Stat Booster- One random stat gets -6 for that turn
*No Ability- The Pokemon looses its Ability for x number of turns

    Just some random ideas 8D.

I've never played PMD but I agree that we could use the same targeting system the game uses.

I like the idea of various barriers blocking Mon from moving, or certain tiles made so only specific Pokemon or certain types can move to them.

I think one thing would be deciding who gets hit and who dodges. What I mean is say X Pokemon is being targeted by three Mon, and it's moving to a tile it wouldn't take any of those hits from. How do we determine if that Mon moves first or gets hit first? Does it go by Speed like normal attacks (at least most normal ones, not counting stuff like Roar or Trick Room)? Do all Pokemon who are moving move first, or all Pokemon who are attacking attack first? I think doing it based on Speed (X Pokemon is faster than two attacking it but slower than the third, so it takes one hit before moving to dodge the others) would be easiest.

Also, having two options per turn sounds neat, but not having to move and attack each turn. You could maybe choose to move twice, attack twice, or do each action once or something. However if you attack twice it has to be a different Pokemon than the one you previously attacked (or if there are no other Pokemon around you that you can hit, you'd either have to move or end your turn early, if you'd only done one thing).

Or, if we're gonna keep this as a simple FFA rule (which is looking less and less likely XD), I'd say just keep it as you did for the FFA, but tweak the things that obviously need some tweaking.

Really interesting on the whole, and some great extra ideas being added in...maybe once we get the rules sorted out we could have a forum FFA with this in the rules. It would help show if there were any problems that were overlooked.

    Thunder410 approves this :p

I'm also all-for the PMD style, mainly because I love that series. Using PMD as the base would also make rules and stuff easier to create, because Pokemon pretty much already made the basic rules and all that stuff.
Plus, I would be able to somewhat use my PMD Sky manual for it :p

This seems like great fun, and I'm all for it becoming a regular battle style xD

I'd use PMD as a base and edit accordingly.

Ok, I think CTF pokemon battles would be awesome, I know you are using this format in your forum FFA but I think we should add CTF to the URPG roster of battle types
