    Art Capture Challenge Judging

It has been a few weeks since our talented URPG artists stepped up to the plate and created their various masterpieces for the Art Capture Challenge. Their task was to design a piece matching the theme, "New Horizons", as well as impress the myriad URPG Art Curators (Judges).

I want to make a note that having multiple judges really helped determine which pieces were better than others. There were those that clearly stood out (numerically). The following three winners were, for the record, ahead of the pack.

Now it is time to reveal, who's masterpiece succeeds?! Which artists have risen to the challenge!? Who wins the Golden Paintbrush today!?

    In First Place:

    Artist: gun6
    Entry Title: The Unsuspecting Newcomer

Gun6's entry garnered an average of 87.9 points among the judges. Here are some of the judge's comments:

    - The trainer doesn’t look half bad- in fact, he looks pretty decent. He doesn’t suffer from anime hair style, which is a plus, and he doesn’t suffer from “anime-enlarge-person’s-head-to-grotesquely-huge-proportions” syndrome either. His Sunkern does seem slightly small, but that could have to do with the fact that you choose Sunkern because it was relatively tiny and useless. I like how the boy’s color pallet matches with Sunkern. It’s a nice “coincidence”.

    - The meaning behind this adds a little humour to the whole concept of a New Horizon. Sunkern being quite possibly the least useful in handling something unknown, the title of the piece is strongly supported.

    - The concept of a new journey seems kind of cliche, but nobody else really did it... You drew and colored everything yourself, and made it look good. It is different from the other entries, but nothing really too creative going on.

    - The Sunkern is adorable. (Almost everyone said this.)

As Host, I want to point out that Gun6 consistently came in first in many of the results, and in the cases he didn't, still remained highly ranked.

    And in Second Place:

    Artist: Kai-Mei
    Entry Title: Moonrise

On average, Kai-Mei's piece scored 78.0 points. Some comments include:

    - The Pokemon themselves are fairly well drawn and the glow around Latios is a nice touch. The broken Pokeballs makes it a very emotional piece.

    - It's a good concept. You could of drawn the two Pokemon closer, then maybe we could see more detail and maybe even their expressions. It is hard to figure out those are mountains (if they are). All the different colors of grass seem kind of odd too.

    - I'm beginning to feel like a school teacher when I speak of "What the artist meant", my student response usually being "How the hell should I know?", but I cannot help but feel this is a soulful, strongly emotional piece. The two Pokemon starting a new life represents the theme in its entirety.

    And in 3rd Place:

    Artist: TheEvilDookie
    Entry Title: A Psychedelic Sunrise

TED's piece earned an average of 75.4 points. Judges commented:

    - An effective sketch piece, tying together Pokemon with the New Horizons theme very nicely.

    - I should ask TED to color it. (A lot of these comments)

    - You have a very nice looking Solrock-sun right there, for one thing. The trainer, acting like an idiot, is quite adorable.

So congratulations to Gun6, Kai-Mei, and TED! Our Challenge Winners!

Gun6, in addition to your participation earnings, you also win a Pokemon in the "Simple" Category! Congratulations!

Kai-Mei, TED, you both win a mart item worth $5,000 or less in addition to your participation money.

The following artists earn $5,000 for participating:

    JokesterJesse
    Kanga
    Blank
    Dog of Hellsing
    Dark Moonlight
    Gun6
    Casey Adkins
    Marshy
    Kers
    Kai-Mei
    TheEvilDookie
    Feng

The following Curators (Judges) earn $6,000:

    Thunder410
    Marshy
    Pidge
    Kai-Mei
    Monbrey
    Near
    Haze
    TsukiKaiki64
    Gun6

(If you sent me results and I accidentally forgot you (though I'm sure I didn't), let me know and I'll look for your PM. I won't change the results, but I'll still pay you for your work.)

Anyway, congratulations to our winners and participants! You all have done an amazing job, and as far as art contests go, the only hiccup was my own tardiness. Thanks for playing and look forward to our next trial (or Banner competition)! (And maybe next time, we'll have a host that actually knows art!)

For those of you wondering about being chosen as Permanent Curators, I will contact (PM) the members who are generally what I'm looking for.

Please post here to claim your money/prizes and congratulate the winners! If you have any comments about the event, please feel free to post them here. We would love to have your feedback.

Jesse, the judging was essentially the quiz.

If anyone wants to see all of my comments:

(also, I mostly gave out all bad scores, so don't feel bad)

Point system stolen from sk: http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8614

Overall Impression (just what I think of it without going too in depth, how good it looks): 55
Concept (what you're doing with the theme): 10
Execution (how well you pull it off): 10
Skill Level Required (how difficult it is to make): 10
Creativity (originality and thought put in): 15
    Total: 100

My paragraph about your artwork will generally go through each category in that order.

It was kind of hard to do this by points, it would be better to just comment on each, and rank them. It's hard to numerically rank these in categories and make them all relative to each other, so sorry if one seems like it had the same concept or something, but it got a point more than another. However, no two concepts are exactly the same. Overall, the scores were all kind of low, so don't feel bad.

Entry Title: The Beginning of a New Horizon
Description: Cherubi notices a new horizon beginning to take form and wonders when it'll get finished. This is a humor piece and was thrown together in Photoshop in like 10 or 15 mins, so yeah, it's crappy XD. Graphic Art isn't my strong area.

Good thing you aren't serious. An infant could make this. I laughed a little though.

    Overall Impression: 4/55
    Concept: 3/10
    Execution: 1/10
    Skill Level Required: 1/10
    Creativity: 2/15
    Total: 11/100

    Artist: Kanga
    Entry Title: Untitled

It's a horrible mix of Pokemon images and real photography. You just took a literal horizon and put Pokemon. The text is just there and the water doesn't really integrate well onto the bodies of Lapras and Gyarados, but nice try. It's just a copy and paste job with some minor erasing. At least it is sort of creative, trying to create a scene of Pokemon in a real world photo.

    Overall Impression: 10/55
    Concept: 4/10
    Execution: 2/10
    Skill Level Required: 1/10

    Artist: Marshy
    Entry Title: Newborn Mime
Description: What boasts new opportunities more than life being brought into this world?

Okay, well first of all, this is freaky. xD That is worth a point or two. Birth is interesting I guess. You drew out the Pokemon and even put some expression into them, but it isn't really detailed. Oh man, I want to stop looking at it, it is just too freaky.

    Overall Impression: 10/55
    Concept: 4/10
    Execution: 4/10
    Skill Level Required: 3/10
    Creativity: 4/15
    Total: 25/100

    Artist: Casey Adkins
    Entry Title: Kingler
Description: This was a piece that I made to make my love of Kingler clear. It describes the theme by showing that even an old pokemon can gain new heights has it did in Generation 4 when it gained Physical STAB.

Well the image screams HELL YEAH KINGLER RULES! That is pretty cool, but there really isn't much thought to it, although it grinds by the theme. It is a copy and paste job, no doubt about it, and there isn't much technique to be seen. The same can be said about creativity.

    Overall Impression: 15/55
    Concept: 5/10
    Execution: 2/10
    Skill Level Required: 2/10
    Creativity: 4/15

    Artist: Dark Moonlight
Entry Title: A new dawn is the beginning of new horizons (shortened down; New Horizons)
Description: Basically, I summed up this in a banner: "A new dawn begins a new horizon!"

Meh. Not much too it. It is a literal horizon again. I don't know if you photographed this or not, but the sun couldn't be so in the way of the water, but the sun flares could be not so obstructive. Not sure what was done besides some text work, and possibly a simple snapshot. I don't really see what is creative about it.

    Overall Impression: 25/55
    Concept: 5/10
    Execution: 5/10
    Skill Level Required: 3/10
    Creativity: 6/15

    Entry Title: New Horizons
Description: Uh, it's just what the sunset looked like near where i live. Edited a bit on GIMP. :3

Simple, kind of effective, but nothing really to grab your attention. It's a literal horizon. I don't see anything Pokemon in it, but Harry never mentioned anything about needing Pokemon! You could of handled the text better, maybe even leave it out. You went the extra mile and took the picture yourself, did some cropping, and maybe some color adjustments. Interesting choice of making it vertical.

    Overall Impression: 30/55
    Concept: 5/10

    Entry Title: A Psychedelic Sunrise
Description: It's a normal Sunrise, isn't it? Nope, it's a giant version of the Psychic Sun, Solrock!

Pretty cool scene. It could of been colored, and we could maybe see more detail on the non-Solrock Pokemon, if it were bigger. Solrock was detailed pretty well btw. I think the trainer and Grimer could look more blown away, while the Pidgeotto looks like it was splattered onto our screen, rather than away from the hill. Could of been more scenery besides the hill. It's different, I'll give you that.

    Overall Impression: 30/55
    Concept: 7/10
    Execution: 4/10
    Skill Level Required: 5/10
    Creativity: 8/15
    Total: 54/100

    Artist: Kai-Mei
    Entry Title: Moonrise
Description: Every time I thought of "new horizons" I thought of that one scene in Pokemon Movie Whatever where Latias and Latios fly off into the horizon and die, which was pretty morbid and mildly depressing. I decided that making a (pardon the cheesiness) new horizon for them to fly off into would be a cute idea, so I have them flying into a perfectly normal moonrise, where Latios doesn't die and all that fun stuff. As if that wasn't enough, I added the Pokeball and Masterball at the bottom- in my imagination, they escaped from some cruel trainer somewhere, allowing them to spend the eons together.

Pretty interesting. It's a good concept. You could of drawn the two Pokemon closer, then maybe we could see more detail and maybe even their expressions. It is hard to figure out those are mountains (if they are). All the different colors of grass seem kind of odd too. The Pokeballs were a very nice touch.

    Entry Title: New Horizons
Description: Deoxys flies through spacing, look for a place to call home.

It looks like a standard signature image, nothing too impressive. There really isn't any indication that Deoxys is looking for a place to live, beside that is zooming through. The image looks like it is blurry near the text, while the rest of it seems sharp. Speaking of the text, new should be capitalized, or the rest of the subtitle should be uncapitalized. It doesn't seem like it was really that difficult to make, besides extracting the image out. The background looks like your standard brush whoring. I've seen this kind of images on forums everywhere, nothing really stands out.

It's pretty minimalistic, but that doesn't mean it is bad. You chose good images to work with I guess. Even though it is simple, it is nice looking. lold at file name.

    Entry Title: The Curious Case
    Description: Confused. Irritated. Betrayed. Lie?

Pretty cool, but I don't really see it fitting with the theme that much. I guess we are left with our own interpretations in art, though. It seems a bit blurry. The swirly things you added were a nice touch, giving some action and flow to the overall piece.

    Entry Title: The Unsuspecting Newcomer
Description: This is somewhat similar to personal experience. I, for example, started with an Igglybuff (in retrospect, possibly the worst choice I could have made.) However, that made me think, "What would it be like if someone started with a Sunkern?" Also, try to find the Mew. :)

Nice, the Sunkern is cute. ^_^ The concept of a new journey seems kind of cliche, but nobody else really did it. The thing that bothers me the most is the eyes of the trainer. Maybe you're trying to make him look kind of 'derp-ish' because he has a starter Sunkern, but the weird expression really bothers me. Also, the trainer could be in more of a dynamic pose, not so still. The background doesn't seem to fit the style of the trainer and Sunkern, it would look better if they did, but I understand where the focus of the image is. You drew and colored everything yourself, and made it look good. It is different from the other entries, but nothing really too creative going on.

Gun6, I have to admit, I scored your piece higher than I would have my own. It was purty... xD

Claiming 11K and I guess I'll go over to the mart for my item once I figure that out.

    GRATS, ALL. This was fun.

EDIT: Yum, claiming Ice Beam. HERE, just in case.
