Gym Tournament 2015 [Round 1]

and also a throwback to 2013 because that was the last gym tourney posted on PWN; i'm totally not copying chainy's posts. (thanks chainy!!!!)

Everyone, here is the first round of the 2015 Gym Leader Tournament! The battle rules can be found below. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, this round will end at 11:59pm EST on December 26th, 2015. Please remember to post the battle logs in this thread. A short description is required, but you can keep if vague if the battlers wish it so.

If there are any issues in scheduling your battle, please contact me asap. I would like to keep extensions to a minimum.

Neonsands of Olivine City Gym (Steel): Win 3K + Advances Vs. Ataro of Goldenrod City Gym (Normal): Loss 1.5K + Out

This was an extremely close battle. One of the more entertaining things I've reffed in my time here and that's saying something (even though it took almost 7 hours and I stayed up until 4am ;-; ). Neon only disappointed a little with some hax to get around the threatening Mega Lopunny, but there was definitely skill involved on both ends to be sure. Watching them question their decisions was hilarious, especially when they both realized things like moves that don't KO at the exact same time independently and shenanigans like that. In the end, I would say that battle came down to weather or not Kangaskhan would be able to stop Aegislash from sweeping. Neon originally sent Substitute predicting a Sucker Punch, and Ataro had gone with Roar try to outpredict. Seconds before I hit the "Enter" key, though, Neon changed back to his original send of Sacred Sword which KO'd Kanga which allowed him to finish up the sweep. Good game from both ends! Also lol Ataro switched in an Imposter Ditto with Imprison set up on Neon's side haha u n00b.

Also everyone else besides those two, but we're gonna do 6v6 gym pay for this, so 4k for winner, 2k for loser, 3k for ref.

@Monbrey; are you okay with giving the refs an extra $1000 for reffing so that their pay is 4k versus the standard 3k?

Dash of Shalour City Gym (Fighting): Win 4K + Advances Vs. Felly of Geosenge Town Gym (Dark): Loss 2K + Out

Infernape took out Hydreigon quickly, but then fell to Honchkrow who was concealing a clutch Weakness Policy topping it off with Moxie. Blaziken came in and did Blaziken shenanigans taking out Honchkrow and Baton Passing to Gallade. With the Speed and Attack boosts from Blaziken, Gallade Mega Evolved and swept most of Felly's team before finally falling to a Shadow Sneak from Greninja. Hawlucha entered last and used a combination of Weakness Policy and Unburden to overcome Greninja after taking an Acrobatics.

WinterVines vs Sou Cleiffe
M-Beedrill, Nidoking, Tentacruel, Crobat, Drapion, Accelgor vs Whimsicott, M-Gardevoir, Klefki, Togekiss, Slurpuff, Clefable

This was a really good battle. Sou's patience paid off early and got some good boost onto Togekiss. Togekiss then KO'd Nidoking and Baton Passed boosts onto Klefki. Klefki then did some damage, but eventually Tentacruel got a haze in and Accelgor then Encored it. At this point it started shifting back into Winter's favor. She had more options and started abusing the lack of options that Sou had in both EMs and items. Eventually it got to a point where both sides were down three. Eventually the tailwind that Sou set up to get even wore off, and Accelgor/Beedrill was set to finish off whatever was left. At this point Sou called it and forfeited.

Ash K vs Xali
Charizard-X, Murkrow, Sigilyph, Skarmory, Togekiss, Tropius vs Starmie, Lanturn, Gyarados, Slowbro, Lapras, Rotom-W

So, I'm still not entirely sure how all of this happened. Xali was getting a little shutout early. Good reads by Ash, and the only real meaningful moves by Xali were a good no switch or two. He tricked a choice item onto Sigi, and got a good Pain Split onto Tropius when it came in on Rotom-W. Other than that, Ash seemed in complete control. It got to the point where Charizard-X had gotten like three KOs and Ash was up 6-2 in mons. Then Lapras and Lanturn worked their way through with some T-waves and good moves (Brine being a real big part in the comeback). Eventually it got to a point where a Togekiss was trying to Heal Bell paralysis off of it (and Murkrow) after having its weakness policy activated. However, it was on the receiving end of the first and only fully paralyze of the night. That ended up giving Xali the momentum he needed to make a comeback and come out on top.

This is your mid-week reminder. You have until this Saturday at 11:59pm EST to do your battle; if your battle is in progress at that time, I'll allow y'all to finish. If y'all are having scheduling conflicts, come to me now so we can at least get y'all started on a forum battle. While I am willing to give an extension due to the holiday on Friday, if it can be avoided, I'd also like that. If I give an extension, it'll be within the next 48 hours, but don't count on it.

Ditto, Clefable, Ambipom, Porygon2, Staraptor, Girafarig vs M-Salamence, Dragonite, Haxorus, Dragalge, Kingdra, Garchomp

By far the quickest of any of the tourney battles so far, and not in a bad way. A really close game that seemed to be trade after trade. It stayed even, where one KO was usually avenged the very next turn. Eventually it got to a point where LC had only a damaged P2 and a fresh Clefable in against 3 remaining dragons, but the little pink moon creature proved to be too tricky to take down. It KO'd a paralyzed MegaMence, easily handled a Dragonite that was weakened by stealth rocks, and made quick work of Kingdra who had no real counter. Interestingly enough, had Dragonite not used a Toxic on the Magic Guard Clefable, there would have been a freeze on one of Kingdra's Ice Beams (which I rolled because I was an idiot and didn't think about there already being a major status condition).

Prince Vultan vs Seppe
Crobat, Gliscor, Nidoqueen, Roserade, Scolipede, Toxicroak vs Rotom-M, Sceptile, Ferrothorn, Cradily, Sawsbuck, Whimsicott

So, this match was interesting. PV got off to a really good lead. Seppe tried to make some reads to start, but it seemed like every one of them went the wrong way. Eventually Cradily came in and looked like it was going to pose a threat, but a really fortunate burn put a damper on that. Eventually all of Seppe's possible comebacks got extinguished and potential reads seemed to be wrong. PV kept the lead and made it even bigger. It didn't help that Stealth Rocks put in a world of work.

Gardevoir, Meowstic, Gallade, Alakazam, Espeon, Swoobat vs Gengar, Golurk, Sableye Drifblim, Aegislash, Dusclops

Not the most one-sided battle, but CommBa seemed to be in control throughout. A surprise Weakness Policy on Golurk ended up netting it two KOs. Then Mega-Gardevoir came in and stopped it. But Mega-Gardevoir tried to outpredict and attack after wishing instead of protecting. This cost Mega-Gardevoir, and Siless was down 3-5 in mons. Then type advantage did its things and there wasn't much coming back.

Because of the holiday, I'm going to give y'all till 11:59pm EST on December 29th. This'll keep the next round from conflicting with New Years as well in case any of our participants intend to turn up for the new year. I will not be extending for round 1 past the 29th, so if y'all haven't completed your battle by then, I'm going to advance the more active opponent. (In the event something has started and is unfinished, I'll advance the opponent who is currently winning unless the battle is actively in progress.)
