As a reminder for the future, please remember to include a signature in your picture so that it proves you drew this picture.

    First Impression:

Well, isn’t this Caterpie looking for a…. golden oppurtunity? eh? eh? No? Alright, I get it, but i couldn’t help making the funny after looking at such a happy Caterpie! He looks so happy knowing he’s got this nice golden color, like a whole bar of gold! But will this be YOUR golden opportunity to snag this little pretty? Let’s find out!

    Form:

So from first glance, I could immediately tell this was a Caterpie, without having to look up its reference picture, so great job on that! Which, by the way, I’m glad you’re submitting art pieces for pokemon, the more you practice, the better you get! The better you get, the better pokemon you can attempt to capture and we curators will help you in what way we can with advice on pieces like these.

Moving on, since this is an easiest, you don’t need to show the whole pokemon to get it, but you do still get more points for showing the whole pokemon. You may have run into the problem where you simply ran out of paper, but here’s a trick I use to do regarding that. I would take one piece of paper for my practice run. I could sketch and erase as I pleased until i was happy, then outlined it with marker. I then placed another piece of paper over it, had a light above (or below) and traced my pokemon onto the second page without all the erase marks and sketches underneath.

Anyway, the basic shapes are pretty similar to the ones on the official art, but I want you to take a closer look at it in comparison. Caterpie’s head is a bit longer then you have drawn here, which in turn affects how long and thick you’ve drawn the other parts of it’s body, such as the size and shape of it’s “mouth”. The antenna’s shape is drawn correctly, but also lacks the thickness it should have. See how you have the two pieces tapering in to the center piece? It doesn’t taper as much in the official art. One other thing I’ll point out is to watch out for the shapes of patterns on the body. Only some of them are oval in shape, while the very first two from its head are circular.

I am in no way trying to make you feel bad, I am simply pointing out different details to show you how easy it is to overlook details. I overlook them all the time myself! This is your first piece and as a first piece its really good, so I definitely want to see more!

    Background/Foreground:

There is no background for this picture, but for harder pictures, a background may be required.

    Line:

The lines are very clear in this image and pretty clean. You did a great job on making sure it was clean, crisp and readable.

    Technique:

Since, again, this is an easiest, I don’t really expect shading for this, though it usually gives you a lot more points and adds to the art piece. If you have questions about shading, feel free to ask. You’ll learn something and i’ll get to practice or learn more haha. We both win! Now, the technique I will bring up is the coloring. I can see some of it is blown out, so some of the color is more then likely lost, however from what I can see, I’m going to suggest to color in one direction before coloring in another. What I mean is coloring diagonally from the right first, then doing it from the left and it should look a lot cleaner that way. I use to color this way until I learned that technique. It’s technically called cross-hatching and is a sketching technique, but you can use it for coloring to get a cleaner look. You’ll even get less white ares by carefully coloring that way! Of course, you have to make out where you want your highlights and shadows first so you know where to apply pressure when you coloring.

As far as the colors, the main body should be a bit of a darker color as compared to what you have, though the yellow you did use is perfect for the rings on its body. The color used for it’s underside however is pretty close as is the one of the antennae. Aside from that, great job on your first picture here in the URPG!

    Overall:

Overall, there were a few issues, but I have no doubt you learned something from this and will hopefully take that forward into a possible next piece. I enjoyed looking this over and giving you, hopefully helpful advice. So in conclusion, I’m scoring this a 25/25, so your Caterpie is definitely captured! I hope to see more from you! You also get the April theme bonus of 2k.
