Curation for "Steven Universe in a Rapidash Onesie"

    CONCEPT & FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Yay crossovers! And its SU meets Pokémon, so obviously this is bound to be a great idea for a picture. If you allow me to digress a bit, I have to say I love Rebecca Sugar’s gemtastic creation even if I’ve only seen the first season and a few from the later ones (CN here keeps replaying it, boo!). I can pretty much say the same thing about your drawing too, though! (and by that I mean the i-love-it part and not the booing, lol) First impressions included such thoughts as “ahhh I can see this happening this should be a real thing in the show”, “whoah that onesie looks warm and cozy hehe”, and “this is 2cute mang”. I swear I can be a professional curator. Maybe. Ahem. Carrying on!

    DETAIL, CREATIVITY, & STRUCTURE
As a whole the drawing is pretty simple, and that’s fine considering your target rank. Nonetheless it’s really well-drawn, and you totally captured our boy Steven’s look here. The top two things I love about this picture are 1) Steven’s expression and 2) the fact that you drew the Rapidash onesie in a style that’s convincingly SU-esque. I like the creativity in this and it shows me you have a good talent for drawing! Lines are clean and the drawing’s elements are well-proportioned. I wish there were more supporting elements to this drawing (e.g. a more definite background) than just the grass(?) Steven is standing on, but I get what level of difficulty you were aiming for this piece so that isn’t too much of a problem.

As for your technique you did a good job with the markers; the flames on the onesie are particularly eye-catching. Nothing too problematic here, although the way you colored Steven’s face and fists—I’m assuming with a crayon or something similar rather than a marker—needs some polishing. As it is the strokes are kind of all over the place and uneven in a few places. Despite of that, however, this is still a really enjoyable piece overall.

    COLOR CHOICE & SHADING
Your colors are vibrant and playful, which goes well enough with your drawing that I have to say you did really well on this area. In terms of lighting, you have the shine on the onesie’s hooves and the yellows on the flames serving this purpose, which is okay for a submission targeting a Simple rank, but I think that including some shading on the onesie itself, among other things, would have really improved your piece. I understand that you might have been limited with the colors of the markers available to you, so it isn’t much of a biggie, especially when the drawing has good enough perspective that it doesn’t look that flat at all.

    EFFORT & EXECUTION
On the whole I really think you did great, so well done! Markers can be tricky little things, but you used them really well and the result is a really adorable piece of art! Just remember the pointers I mentioned above, especially in any future art-related endeavor aiming for the higher ranks.

    THE VERDICT
Now to decide on your score!

I’ll go and score this a 37—meaning Simple Rank achieved!!! You can go and add $5,000 monies to your stats now. I feel this definitely passes as a Simple, and that it’s close to qualifying for Medium if you had included some more background details and if the coloring on Steven’s face was more consistent. Congrats, and I look forward to more works from you—Steven Universe-slash-Pokémon or otherwise (although I see Peridot up there, wink wink)—and if you have any questions about this art grade you can always drop me a PM/VM/Discord IM!

    Curation for Shiny Periblossom

    CONCEPT & FIRST IMPRESSIONS
YES there are more of these! I am pleased, although Peridot over there looks less so, haha. This is just brilliant! Pun slightly intended. Now I’m imagining all the other gems in Pokémon suits/onesies. (Think Ruby and Sapphire as Plusle and Minun!!) So yeah, if it wasn’t obvious enough, I outright like this charming drawing. I mean, what’s not to love? It’s neatly drawn and the colors are wonderful!

    DETAIL, CREATIVITY, & STRUCTURE
There’s not a whole lot of detail in this picture, but that’s all good since I’m assuming this drawing is meant to be simplistic, your target Rank being Simple, after all. Add to the fact that Bellossom isn’t exactly the most complexly designed Pokémon out there and you got yourself a pretty simple drawing. That’s not at all to say that it isn’t any good, though! In fact, the simplicity and neatness of it all—the outlines especially—is what I like about the piece, and obviously the expression on Peridot is superb.

You’re also good in terms of form as I see no major discrepancies when comparing your drawing to pictures of both Bellossom and Peridot (except perhaps the size of Bellossom’s head, which I’m taking as larger in your drawing to account for Peridot). In terms of detail, you seem to have dropped Bellossom’s blush marks, but that’s no problem since Peridot’s face took up space for where those would have been. It would have been a cute little detail to have them on Peridot, though! There really isn’t a background to speak of, which I can let slide since this is again meant as a fun, simple drawing.

Your coloring technique is good, although on some parts where you used markers (basically where the arms are) things get too blocky, such that the detail your lines provide is lost to an extent. Something you can do to avoid/remedy this is to make the outlines thicker—maybe even use markers for them, too!

    COLOR CHOICE & SHADING
Shading’s practically absent, though that’s to be expected. As for color choice, overall I think you hit the general colors for this piece, even if Bellossom’s parts are either a shade lighter or darker. Using sprites as reference for Shiny Bellossom though (not counting the anomaly that is the Gen II sprite, mind), the centers of Bellossom’s flowers are actually the same lighter green on its leaf skirt. For that you used yellow and orange instead, which honestly looks better that it’s not that big of a problem—I think using the same green anyway would have made for a boring two-tone picture, which you fortunately avoided. As a last note I noticed one leaf being miscolored—all of Bellossom’s backmost leaves are dark green, so the second one in your drawing is colored incorrectly. Although it doesn’t make much difference (in fact I probably wouldn’t have caught it if I hadn’t pulled up a reference image), being consistent is always a plus.

    EFFORT & EXECUTION
It’s a good, neat doodle with enough character in it to make it visually interesting despite being so simplistic. You totally got Peridot’s pout perfectly, which is awesome. Just gotta be careful when filling-in with markers so they don’t drown out lines and other details. It’s also a good habit to double check with references so you’re consistent with colors and details. With all that said, I can definitely say that I enjoyed this piece, so great work!

    THE VERDICT
I’ve decided to score this a 36, which—you guessed it right—is under the Simple Rank at $5,000! Target achieved yet again, congratulations. If you want to aim for the higher Ranks, I suggest including more details, shading, and definitely more substantial backgrounds.
Got any questions or just wanna talk about this art grade in general? Don’t hesitate to leave me a PM/VM/Discord IM :D
