    YO WATSUP.

So we know how much I suck at art? Yeah, I tried it again. This time, I'm aiming for a Poliwag. I used this really cool application on my tablet called InspirARTion, and, though it might seem cheesy, it's a really awesome application that I doodle with. I just found one of the features to be kaleidoscopic symmetry, and I had lots of fun playing with the cool effect. It helped me make the background and my take on the Poliwag's spiral.

Here's the piece, entitled "Hypnosis." I was trying to go for a mysterious or hypnotizing vibe, and I remembered that Poliwag's line could learn the move. This would be the moment when Poliwag has hypnotized his opponent and they're about to fall asleep, and all they see is the slightly obscured Poliwag.

    Target: Poliwag
Requirements: 1x Piece, scoring 40 or higher.

Also sorry if it got blurry. Transferred it from InspirARTion to Paint to a resizing application to Imageshack then to BMG. It became a little pixelated in the process, but I think it's all good! Sig is the incredibly messy, scribbly hand-writing of HW in the corner. Thanks!

EDIT: Made a Whismur one too! Similar process, created in InspirARTion and modified in a few other programs. This one is an aerial shot, as if a bird Pokémon was attacking Whismur. Whismur is known to release screams louder than a jet engine when disturbed, so the lines radiating from its mouth distorts the vision of the Pokémon entirely. It is titled "Shriek."

Sig is still the messy HW.

EDIT2: I MADE ANOTHER WOOHOO. These are actually quite fun and time-consuming, so I made an Ekans. Background was made with InspirARTion, and Ekans was made in a combination of InspirARTion and Paint. This piece is titled, "Predator." Ekans has just found his pray in the bushes, and the petrifying gaze of Ekan's glare has paralyzed the viewer until the Ekans can take a munch!

    Hypnosis:

I've never heard of InspirARTion, but it looks like a really neat application. I love the symmetry and that feathery effect. The hypnotizing vibe you were going for is definitely working, because I can't stop staring at Poliwag's belly. @[email protected] It's like a kaleidoscope.

This is really interesting, because you've managed to make this an "action shot" without the tadpole actually being in motion. Works great. A couple things I might have mentioned were the lack of depth to Poliwag and the incompleteness of his feet, but after reading your explanation, it makes sense here. If I was about to fall asleep, my vision wouldn't be crisp and three dimensional, it would be blurry with bleeding colors. Exactly how you have this. BUT, you didn't just blob colors together and tell us it's a hypnotizing Poliwag, you gave us a focus and managed to give it enough clarity without contradicting your story. Well done.

The background is also pretty cool. I like how you drew the light inwards by darkening the edges and brightening the center. Gives it some nice depth, which is why I was slightly puzzled by it lacking in Poliwag himself. Though as I've already mentioned, it seems intentional. Solid vs sound/light or whathaveyou.

ALSO, THOSE EYES ARE CREEPY AS HELL. IT'S LIKE AN EVIL CLOWN FACE THAT'S PREPARING TO STAB ME. I will never look at Poliwags the same way again. >_>

I think this is worthy of the little amphibian (are tadpoles even amphibians? they have no legs... (too lazy to look it up)).

    Score: 50 - Poliwag captured.

    Shriek:

DAT FACE. So another stationary action shot. Neat. I like the idea, and the overall appeal is pretty nice. I feel the only major issue, as I've mentioned to you already, is that the sound waves look like a spider web. :x If you hadn't explained it, I would have assumed that this was a Whismur trapped in a Spinarak/Joltik web.

Sound is weird to draw. It even sounds weird. HOW DA HECK DO YOU DRAW SOUND? I think the biggest problem here is how flat it is. Sound moves; so to portray sound, you need to portray motion. This can be done typically by either a)directing light or b)directing focus. To direct light, you would paint the area with most intense sound the brightest and gradually darken preceding/following waves. To direct focus, you would paint the area with the most intense sound the clearest, and gradually blur the preceding/following waves.

Whismur himself looks pretty good and accurate. I also see where you've given him some shading. I'd just recommend creating more of a contrast, because I didn't notice it at first. The darkened spaces needed to be more intense.

Also, I totally get that this large volume of sound would blur vision, BUT... remember you are trying to catch a Pokemon with this picture. There are zero details in the background and pretty minimal deets in Whismur. :( Effort matters too, not just skill. There are ways to work around your ideas, just like you've done in Poliwag's scene.

However, I think this image is still enough to squeak by. I feel that just like stories, creativity is super important here too. And you didn't just give us a blurry Whismur, you put some thought behind it. Overall, this makes sense, and looks pretty cute. Significant effort. good job.

    Score: 40 - Whismur captured.

    Predator:

:O This is pretty sick. Ekans looks like a badass. I feel bad for the poor soul that got caught by this thing.

The shading on Ekans looks really good. Very edgy. Totally works. The eye glare is also cool. However, be aware of your angles. From our perspective, his upper right tooth should appear larger/thicker than his left. You have it painted opposite. The bottom set is perfect, though.

The nest/bush-thing he's in looks realistic. But, I don't quite understand the decision to use purple in it, was it because of the glare? It'd make sense to start seeing trippy things once petrified, I suppose. I think my issue with it is that it is the exact same shade of purple you used for Ekans, so it kind of disrupts your focus. Should we be drawn to the bush, or to the creature? Your colors and use of them will decide that, and if they don't, then we will not be drawn anywhere.

There is also a bit of confusion with light and where it is coming from. But regardless, this drawing looks really great. Like, really. It gives me the heebie jeebies, so I'll keep this short.

Very spooky appeal, nice attention to detail. A bit more attention to perspectives and realism in future arts, and you'll be well progressed.

    Score: 45 - Ekans captured.

They are baby frogs, so yes. Though if you want to get technical (and believe me, I do) they are the larval state in the life cycle of a soon-to-be full fledged amphibian, and since they aren't their own separate animal they don't have a separate classification.
